I've already clamored for this to become an ongoing, sight unseen, on the MARVEL FEB SOLICITS thread. It certainly deserves its own topic so we can eagerly await its arrival.

Perhaps this will make my historically least-favorite month of the year more exciting!

Sure wish that Lustig/Supergirl deal hadn't fell through at DC. That would've been an utter scream. Nice to see Marvel team him with the Giff.

Marvel seems the place to be for fun lately-- She-Hulk, The Thing, GLA (now GLX), Defenders and now this. I approve muchly!

If this mini is a success, dare we hope for a quarterly GIANT SIZED MARVEL ROMANCE REDUX series?

I'm actually looking forward to the Jack Kirby art-- never seen his take on a romance comic before.

But what will become of Whiney, Pathetic Love?

Looks good. A little Lustig should perk up everybody's February.

Marvel is also releasing a TPB of "regular" romance comics from the 60s & 70s - stories such as "It Happened at Woodstock". ???? It may be hard to tell the difference between the real and the redux....

Marvel seems to be on a romance kick. The April previews show two weddings and two suffocatingly soulful kisses (one with Wolverine, of course).

*reacts with surprise that Lash hasn't gushed over the first issue of this yet*

Posted by MLLASH on :

It's out? I haven't been to the CBS in a couple of weeks.

I'll swing by there Friday, so expect gushing sometime this weekend!

Posted by Fat Cramer on :

I'll gush! It was great. Falling in love with a comics geek, falling in love with the guy you were hired to kill, "President Stripper" and lots of interfering mothers... this is what romance comics were meant to be.

It's also funny (to me) that all the stories were written by guys. In these satires, the women tend to be stronger and more independent than in the originals - but just as manipulative, catty and backstabbing. Romance is evil!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Gallaghers! Now I'm *REALLY* excited! Come on, Friday!!!

Posted by Fat Cramer on :

There's also "I Heart Marvel", which has three romance stories - one with the ubiquitous Wolverine, one that's funny and one that's ?cute ?sweet - the middle story was worth the price of the issue.

The romance TPB is very good - just flipped through it so far. It begins with stories from the 1960s and continues to 1974, so just the changes in art style are interesting. The Steranko psychedlic art is really nostalgic!

Scanning through the readers' names (girls wrote in with hairstyle and dress designs - no letters, I guess), it struck me that I would never have bothered to look much at the names as a kid, because I wouldn't have known anyone outside of my town - but, with the internet, we're in contact with comics fans throughout the world. (Didn't recognize any names, however. [Smile] )

Posted by MLLASH on :

Gallaghers! Couldn't wait until Friday, so I scraped together what I could and went on to the CBS today. Got about half my pull, including this! Cover is excellent-- can't wait to dig in later!

(I also put the MARVEL ROMANCE tpb on hold in my pull; may have to go back tomorrow or Saturday for that and the rest!)

Posted by MLLASH on :

I forgot to gush! It was GREAT! "President Stripper", indeed! And the Gene Colon/Jim Mooney art on "Hit or Miss" was breathtaking!

The "I (HEART) MARVEL" books have been EXCELLENT as well! I've read OUTLAW LOVE, MY MUTANT HEART, WEB OF ROMANCE and MARVEL AI, with the artist's stunning rendition of Medusa.

Marvel Romance RIPOFF??!?!?!

So, unable to bear the comicless torment any longer, I scraped together about $45 to take to the CBS today, to knock my pull down.

Among the items I chose to purchase was the $20 Marvel Romance tpb.

Much to my chagrin, upon a flip-through at home I discovered that virtually the ENTIRE first issue of MARVEL ROMANCE REDUX (with original scripting) was included in this tpb.

Now I'm not sure whether to:

A) Be enraged that I paid so much for stories I've already seen, in altered (and probably bettered) form.

OR

B) Be excited that I have a chance to compare the originals to the reduxes.

I don't like being torn about stuff I was initially thrilled about.

Posted by Thriftshop Debutante on :

I don't mind the stories from Redux, but WHAT ABOUT "IT HAPPENED AT WOODSTOCK"?!? Hmph.

Posted by Fat Cramer on :

The repeat was part of the charm for me. It was very hard to decide which is funnier - the original script, or the redux. To think that some young girls might actually have taken those stories as guides to real life casts a chill over the soul. [Wink]

There's one notable story that wasn't reduxed - the girl who spends her time reading romance comics then meets and falls in love with the writer of those comics, and she becomes a character in the comics.

Plus the Steranko art... [Love]

As it turns out, I adored it from cover to cover. Finished it today.

So much so that my next post will be an Oscar-style awards presentation.

Posted by Thriftshop Debutante on :

I enjoyed the "Well, well, I see that you know how to read! Is it the latest Mickey Spillane thriller or a comic book?" bit from The Summer Must End. (The original, not the Redux!)

MARVEL ROMANCE TPB OSCARS

Actress in a supporting role: Nan from "Patsy's Secret Boyfriend", who helps teach us to always give our friends the benefit of the doubt before we accuse them of being man-hungry sluts!

Actor in a supporting role: Tom from "One Day A Week", who shows us that true love wins out, even if your girlfriend is vaguely dissatisfied, easily fooled and wants to live in the cab of a truck!

Worst hairdo: Sally Rogers from "Give Back My Heart". Good Lord! What the hell was that terrifying mess all about? And you mean she never changed her style in FOUR YEARS?

Most melodramatic splash page: "JILTED!" Y'think it's over? I get the feeling that it IS.

Best artwork: Jim Steranko, for "My Heart Broke in Hollywood". Best Steranko artwork I've ever seen.

Worst pickup line: "You little FOOL!" used by both Whitey in "Jilted" and Art Nelson in "I Want Him-- But He's Hers!"

Biggest Name Screw-Up: "The Dream World of Doris Wilson", in which our heroine is actually named Doris Nelson.

Best original story that was REDUXED: "I Do my Own Thing-- No Matter Whom I Hurts", which was brilliantly reduxed into the hilarious "President Stripper".

Cutest boy: Stephen from "As Time Goes By", as drawn by Gene Colan.

Cutest girl: Kathy, from "Love Isn't In The Cards For Me", as drawn by J. Buscema, J. Romita & F. Giacoia.

Girl that most resembles Teeds: Joellen Jacobs, from "Formula For Love".

best 'FLOATING-HEAD' scene: The splash page of "One Day A Week", where the visage of Tom the trucker looks not unlike it is carved into the mountain like Rushmore!

Actress in a lead role: Jill, from "A Teen-Ager Can Also Love", who teaches us that if we put our own emotional and physical needs aside and focus all our energies on a has-been teen idol, he will again become famous and then years later, marry us.

Actor in a lead role: How can I not give it to Humphrey Bogart, from "As Time Goes By".

Best story: "I Do My Thing-- No Matter Whom It Hurts".

Oh, thanks a lot!

Well, she does have a rather demented look on page 136, panel 3.

PS to Lash: page 116, panel 1. Remind you of anyone?

Dang, I should have had an evil villain & villainess category!

But Cynthia Worthington from "I Wan Him-- But He's HERS!" would have also been a contender!

It was the glasses-- plus she cleaned up to be a hottie!

Hmmm... page 116, panel 1... let's look... Hmmm... I *do* love that white scarf! And he smokes (p. 117, panel 6)!!

I dig the white scarf too. But re-view p.116, panel 1 again. Besides looking a bit Feister/Harris, it also kinda looks like someone we know. (The dialogue is a hint.)

Here's hoping this TPB sold enough to warrant future releases, or even an ESSENTIAL chock-full of old romance comics!

Posted by Thriftshop Debutante on :

Have you guys checked out Fantagraphics's Romance Without Tears, a TPB with reprints of 40s/50s St. John romance comics? Good stuff. $15 on Amazon.

Posted by Thriftshop Debutante on :

Oh, and I agree with Lash about reprints. I'd REALLY prefer color, but I'd probably get a B&W Essential if there was one.

Posted by MLLASH on :

I haven't but will now.

Do you have TRUER THAN TRUE ROMANCE, which is Lustig-style reduxes in a big full-color TPB by Jeanne Martinet? It's good too.

Posted by MLLASH on :

I also prefer the color, but those colossal ESSENTIALS/SHOWCASEs are a pretty good deal too!

Posted by Thriftshop Debutante on :

I've borrowed TTTR from the library. Fun!

And may I add that if there are more Steranko stories and they put 'em in a trade, I'm there.

Edit:
Here is a review of MHBIH.

Further edit: from what I've read, Jim Steranko doesn't hasn't done all that many comics (when compared to others) and the only romance-type comic I found on this list was the one we already know.

Side note: this isn't a romance comic, but I've always liked this cover

Steranko is just one of those rare comics SENSATIONS...

I mean, the guy really only did a *handful* of X-Men and S.H.I.E.L.D. issues... I actualy had *no idea* he had done any Romance (or any OTHER) comics at ALL!

And the X-issues I've seen (I've even owned a few of them, my favorite cover being the one featuring POLARIS--- # 50 or maybe # 51) were nowhere NEAR as hot as "My Heart Broke In Hollywood"!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Gee, I should have checked Teeds' links before I posted!

Can you beLIEVE I owned a practically mint-condition of X-Men # 50 (THAT cover!!) and freakin' SOLD it?!?!?!

I'm STUPID (ALL of me stupid)!

Read about it but haven't read it. It's supposed to be "realistic" romance, which could be an interesting contrast.

I'd like to nominate "Kathy's Kooky Kards" (Nutty Notes! Swingin' Stationary! with spelling mistake!) for best Romance Story Business.

Excellent review of MHBIH; Steranko had more going on than I realized in that story.

Posted by Thriftshop Debutante on :

Crames! That ain't a typo. It's kooky.

Posted by Fat Cramer on :

Well, I wasn't sure if they were so devious as to put "stationary" and "swingin'" together as a joke. But if they did it on purpose, it's certainly groovy.

Another Romance Redux ("Restraining Orders are for Other Girls") came out, last week I guess, with more great rewrites of classic romance. Kyle Baker's was especially weird, good weird, but weird. Robert Loring Fleming's was ... drivelicious!

Posted by Thriftshop Debutante on :

Got Guys & Dolls & Restraning Orders. Wasn't wowed. The G&D cover was great, but I just don't like the other one.

I've picked up most of I Heart Marvel. It turns out the one I liked most --- the Spidey and MJ one -- was the one I almost didn't get.

Posted by MLLASH on :

I really enjoyed the I HEART MARVELs quite a bit, more than I suspected I would.

Upson reading RESTRAINING ORDERS ARE FOR OTHER GIRLS the first time, I wasn't impressed, but will give it a re-read upon completion of te mini.
