In what looks to me like their own version of Marvel's Essentials, DC will start producing 500-page black and white collections in September called Showcase Presents, focusing on Silver Age characters.

The first book will, of course, feature Superman. October will see a release of a Jonah Hex volume (yeah!) and other future releases will feature Green Lantern, Metamorpho, and the Justice League.

Dare we hope for one (or one hundred) featuring the Legion?

Pulse has more details on the series including the price for the books ($16.99).

Posted by Fat Cramer on :

Sounds like a bargain! At that price, I might even go for the Jonah Hex - and confess I'd like to see Sugar & Spike too, for some odd reason.

Black and white though... that's what always drives me away. Colors are part of what makes comics worth reading for me.

Still... it is a good deal... maybe I'll see if they do one for the Flash... [Wink]

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Even better bargain now! DC just dropped the price to $9.99. $9.99! For a 500 page book! Newsarama has more info. I just hope they honor my pre-order at the new price. Those two books (Superman and Green Lantern) accounted for nearly 1/2 of my July comics order.

Posted by Tamper Lad on :

Can't beat the deal on this. It was a bargain at 17 bucks but at 10 it's amazing. Can't wait to read this stuff, most of it for the first time.

If the black and white is really a problem let the kiddies colour it. They can't possibly miscolour things more than those silver aged colorists did. [Wink]

I'll be sending a copy to JM studios (my 4 and 3 year old cousins) to see what they can do with superman between september and the holidays.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

At this price and page count it amounts to the same as a decent coloring book. I may just see if I can get in an order for an extra copy of each just to have the pages for scanning.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Are they ALL gonna be $10? Can't turn that deal down!

I recently reread my Howard the Duck Essential, the b&w format didn't hurt it at all for me.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Never mind my question-- "first TWO" it says. That Superman one is going to be hard for me to turn down.

Posted by SouthtownKid on :

I want them...but I don't think getting them will stop me from wanting the hardcover-and-in-color Archive Editions, also...

I've been waiting years for DC to do this, I'm really happy they finally have.

The third one, the Metamorpho collection, was on DC's list for this month's orders. Through DCBS they are still offering a 50% discount on the book. Making it only $8.49. Definitely worth it for another month.

I'm still up in the air on if I want Metamorpho at $16.99. Have never been a huge fan of that particular series for some reason.

Last month I only preordered Superman. With the price drop, I have emailed by retailer and asked him to add in the GL book.

My question for you all, what future collections would you like to see? Here's my top 10 list.

LEGION ('natch. But what I'd like to see is a sort of "archives suppliment" that would go back and collect all of the cameos and cross-overs that the Archives skipped. Probably won't happen though as Jen's article quotes DC as saying that the Showcase books will only collect stories done by a series regular creative team.)

TOMAHAWK (The early issues, before they got all goofy on dinos and giant gorillas. Another that probably won't happen as I doubt D has original film to work from. I'd guess I have a better chance of getting a Tomahawk Archive first.)

BAT LASH (Gee, here I go picking another that is unlikely to get published. WIth his Showcase appearances and his series, I don't think Bat has 500 pages worth of silver age material.)

SUGAR AND SPIKE (I'd love this, and bet that it's go big with non fanboys in the bookstore market.)

BLACKHAWK (A fari bit after the target dates for teh series, but I'd like a collection of the Evanier/Spiegle run.)

CANCELED COMICS CALVACADE (I can dream can't I. Most of the books that got the ax in the great DC Implosion wre favs of mine at the time, and I believe the two issues were both close to 500 pages.)

ATOMIC KNIGHTS (Mostly just for the wonderful Murphy Anderson art. Not sure there was 500 pages worth of stories, but could be backed up with any other Anderson drawn stories from the silver age sci-fi books.)

JIMMY OLSEN (Nothing says goofy silver age fun like Superman's Pal?)

PHANTOM STRANGER (At least the Aparo drawn issues.)

STEVE DITKO (Can we focus on a creator instead on one hero? Most of Ditko's work deserves collection, but few of his series lasted long enough to get collected individually. I'd include Question, Mr. A, Blue Beetle, Hawk&Dove, Creeper, Shade, Starman, etc.)

Since I never can stop at 10, how about an Showcase flip-book, half with The SECRET SOCIETY OF SUPER-VILLAINS and half with FREEDOM FIGHTERS, and including the unpubbed cross-over from CCC and Ray solo stories.

Also, I'd love an ATARI FORCE collection, with the series, the special, and the mini-comics.

Superman
Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane (so bad it's good)
Titans
Legion
All-Star Comics - 70s run

Jonah Hex - Like to try some westerns
War Titles, Sgt. Rock etc., not too familiar with them.

Do you think they'd collect those romance comics targeted for girls? Those'd be hilarious.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Besides the Legion I'd like to see:

House of Secrets
House of Mystery
New Gods
GI Combat
The afore mentioned Jonah Hex
The Weird books (Weird War Tales, Weird Western Tales, Weird Worlds)
The Witching Hour

Hell, just through in all the old horror books and I'd be happy.

Metal Men.

I don't know who would have the rights to it, but I'd love to see Millie the Model again. *blush*

Posted by legionadventureman on :

I could be wrong, Fat Cramer, but i think Millie the Model was either the property of Marvel (coz it states that Hellcat (Patsy Walker) used to have her own series and that she and Millie were pals) or Archie coz the artist Dan DeCarlo did Millie and co as well.

Posted by Stealth on :

Millie the Model is a Marvel property. They did a mini-series in the 80s about her niece, Misty. I believe Millie might have even made a couple of cameos in their superhero books, too.

DC Showcase Volumes I want to see:

The Jim Shooter/Curt Swan LSH stories.

The Phantom Stranger and Spectre series that Jim Aparo drew.

The Aquaman stories drawn by Nick Cardy and Aparo.

I'd like to second that, and add the '70s run of Adventure which the JSA stories continued into.

I'd like to see a lot of the Silver Age stuff collected into this format. I got a chance to read (parts of) most of them in my old boss' Archive Editions (good old DC comp box). I was surprised that I really had a hard time sitting through a few of them, even though I really wanted to like them... they just read so dry. Even characters I loved with artists I love, like Hawkman and the Atom... I just found that a little bit went a long way, sometimes (meanwhile, I found I loved Cole's Plastic Man way more than I ever thought I would). But I still would like to have them in some format.

I don't believe that DC could reprint Weird Worlds because they don't have the ERB rights any more. Unless you're talking about Chakin's Iron Wolf.

i second METAL MEN, SUGAR n' SPIKE (I can't believe they are not a big screen movie yet, at least on Cartoon Network), and LOIS LANE (love the rivalry with Lana, and the transformation issues).
also SUPERGIRL; the Charlton heroes; Challengers of the Unknown. Adam Strange. Atomic Knights. (Love those silver age takes on the future.)

Looks great. The covers to Jonah Hex, JLA, Metamorpo and Green Lantern are on the back.

I think I'll get the Metamorpho one.

WISH LIST:

Jimmy Olsen

Lois Lane, DAMN IT!

An all-funky 70s with Freedom Fighters, Secret Society of Super-Villains and Teen Titans in one edition!

Sugar and Spike

70s JSA (All-Star + Adventure)

AMBUSH BUG!!!

I would add SEA DEVILS to my list, but I'd rather have that in a full-color archive.

I wasn't sold right off on the SUPERMAN today, but when I picked it up at the CBS, the first thing I saw when I opened it was a cover featuring THE SUPERMAN OF THE FUTURE. Apparently, the Superman of the future will have a giant, oversized butt-cracked cranium. I knew then that I had to have this.

I got my copies in my delivery this week (2 of each since they dropped the price and I got 50% off, present for a friend). I love this idea still and have preordered each of the other ones that have been solicited. As long as DCBS continues to offer them at a 50% discount I'll keep ordering them. I can always donate them to the children's hospital if I don't like a particular issue.

You guys have listed a ton of greats that I'd love to see. Some runs that my family didn't buy the originals in the 50's/60's that I'd love to see:

House of Secrets
House of Mystery
Star-Spangled War Comics
All-American Western Comics
Tales of the Unexpected (featuring Space Ranger)
Strange Adventures (featuring Captain Comet)

Agree with Lash about the beautiful Sea Devils covers.

I've been devouring the GL book (with my CBS employee discount it was only 5 bucks! Penny a page!) GL was another early favorite of mine and I love getting to see some of the earliest adventures.

And after reading these, I defy anyone to tell me that Marvel was producing better comics in those days.

[sigh]

I miss the days when Batman would hide out inside the giant key Superman used to open his Fortress of Solitude, all in order to play pranks on him.

Never mind that the death rate in Gotham no doubt tripled as the Joker ran amok during the days Batman spent playing this elaborate prank.

Also, I want to see the return of those guys from the 50th century who could take control of Superman's mind and force him to run their errands.

I'm on the fence with the Green Arrow Showcase. I have a lot of those stories in the Jack Kirby Green Arrow collection from a couple of years ago.

I have seen a website that gives the solicitation for a House of Mystery Showcase along with the Green Arrow one. However, I did not see a HoM volume in this month's solicits. That site must have got advance word on next month's Showcase?

Well, I finished my SUPERMAN Showcase, and it was quite hilarious.

So I decided to get the Metamorpho one, because I don't think Green Lantern or Justice League of America will be as amusing.

These are wonderful bedtime-reading books. Just flipping through the Metamorpho one and glancing at a couple of pages, it looks to be really funky. Plus I like Ramona Fradon's art.

Never thought I'd dig B&W comics so much.

Wish Marvel would do a second volume for HOWARD THE DUCK.

Does Ambush Bug have enough appearances to qualify for his own Showcase?

-3 issues of DC Comics Presents
-3 issues of Action
-The Ambush Bug mini, Son of Ambush Bug, Nothing Special and Stocking Stuffer

-That's under 400 pages, I think. [Frown] Am I missing anything?

According to the Bug Archive, he was in Supergirl #16 (1984). Never saw this issue, but it appears to have been more than a cameo.

There were also the Secret Origins and part of the Lobo series (the only good thing about the Lobo series, IMO). Are we up to 400 yet? [Big Grin]

With a book as colorful as "Captain Carrot," I just can't see myself buying this in black and white. I'd love to pick it up as a show of support for new projects (I know one is in the works), but I'm just not interested in seeing it b&w when I've got the color back issues.

So, if you're reading this, DC, I will buy new "Captain Carrot" stuff!!!!! But if you want me to buy old stuff, put it in color!!!!

Supergirl #16 was a pretty unremarkable issue. The AB portion of the plot involves him thinking the SG is Big Blue affected by Red K. I may be wrong, but I don't think it was written by Giffen, so doesn't feature his signature brand of humor.

At roughly 230 pages each, though, the Archives are still 5 MiS issues short of the SHOWCASE volume... at almost 4 times the cover price. And almost 8 times what I paid for mine with DCBS. [Smile]

No reason given. I posted in the Titan thread but it was moved up to October. And the Metal Men was moved to 9/26 (not sure of the original date). The following three titles were added for publication:

quote:
* Showcase Presents: World's Finest Comics Vol. 1 TP collects stories from Superman #76 and World's Finest Comics #71-111, written by Edmond Hamilton, Alvin Schwartz, Bill Finger, Jerry Coleman and others with art by Curt Swan, Dick Sprang, John Fischetti, Stan Kay, Charles Paris, Ray Burnley, Sheldon Moldoff and others.

Showcase Presents: World's Finest Comics Vol.1 is a 552-page black and white trade paperback with a cover price of $16.99, and is scheduled to arrive in stores on October 17.

* Showcase Presents: Sgt. Rock Vol. 1 TP collects stories from G.I. Combat #68 and Our Army at War #81-117, written by Robert Kanigher and Bob Haney with art by Joe Kubert, Jerry Grandenetti, Irv Novick, Russ Heath, Ross Andru and Mike Esposito.

Showcase Presents: Sgt. Rock Vol. 1 is a 544-page black and white trade paperback with a cover price of $16.99, and is scheduled to arrive in stores on Nov. 14.

* Showcase Presents: Supergirl Vol. 1 TP collects stories from Action Comics #252-281, Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #40, 44, 46, 51 And 52, Adventure Comics #278, Superboy #80, Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane #314, and Superman #123, 139, 140 and 144, written by Otto Binder, Jerry Siegel, Robert Bernstein and others with art by Al Plastino, Jim Mooney, Curt Swan, Dick Sprang, Kurt Schaffenberger, Wayne Boring and others.

Showcase Presents: Supergirl Vol. 1 is a 528-page black and white trade paperback with a cover price of $16.99, and is scheduled to arrive in stores on Nov. 28.

In addition, the Showcase Presents: Teen Titans Vol. 2 TP which will now has a new in-store date of Oct. 31. Showcase Presents: Teen Titans Vol. 2 is an 512-page black and white trade paperback with a cover price of $16.99. This title collects Teen Titans #19-36, Brave and the Bold #83 and 94 and World's Finest Comics #205, written by Bob Haney, Mike Friedrich, Neal Adams, Robert Kanigher, Steve Skeates and Marv Wolfman with art by Gil Kane, Neal Adams, Nick Cardy, George Tuska, Carmine Infantino, Sal Amendola, Dick Dillin, Jim Aparo, Wallace Wood and Joe Giella.

Info from Comics Continuum (who obviously no nothing about changing the title tag in their HTML).

ComicsContinuum don't know Firefox exists (long pages, like the solicits, truncate in FF). And they compress JPEGs to beyond an inch of their life.

Having every page's <title> as just "Comics Continuum" is the least of their problems.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

It isn't that they just used "Comics Continuum" they reused another page's (Fangoria Comics for November) title. But, yeah, least of their worries. I don't know why they insist on mistreating their images.

Posted by Reboot on :

And the funny thing is that they didn't for years. Then in 2003 or something like that, they started carpet-bombing the images and although it's improved a little, it's still WAY below what any other site would consider acceptable. It's been years since I looked at it regularly, with that sort of thing...

What's so special about that?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

After 1976, the way royalties are paid to creators on reprints of their work changes, so that it adds a significant cost to reprints of material from that period. This basically makes cheap reprints (such as Showcases) of material from the late 1970s and 1980s unprofitable, unless they can get the creators to waive their royalties. When the Showcases were originally announced, 1976 was supposed to be a cutoff date for this reason. The recent flurry of announced Showcases containing later material seemed to indicate that DC had found a way around this problem. Apparently, they jumped the gun.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

It has to do with how DC's royalty payments work for books between 1976 and 1997. Comics Should Be Good article.

Posted by Pov on :

Well *that* licks ballz. [Razz] So even if there was enough AMBUSH BUG material, they still wouldn't put it in a Showcase... :frustrated: !

And I about SECRET SOCIETY of SUPER-VILLAINS.

This really bites. I guess I should thank my lucky stars we got the TPBs that reprinted the entire 70s run of JSoA from ALL-STAR and ADVENTURE (I bought these even though I have the originals, as I would have the SSoSV Showcase, because the originals are getting long in the tooth and ratty).

I guess I can forget that groovy 70s TEEN TITANS tpb, huh? And I guess I better get that HUNTRESS tpb while I can.

I'm really upset about this.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Not to get your hopes up, but this may actually be promising as far as getting some of this stuff in TPB format. If it's unprofitable to put in the cheaper format, it may lead DC to release it in more expensive formats if they can be convinced that there's a market for them.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Oooooh. I actually WOULD prefer it in color, and don't mind the less-expensive paper of the recent JSoA tpb's...

Speaking of the Marvel Essentials, I rounded out a recent IST purchase with THE DEFENDERS Vol. 1, to qualify for free shipping [Poverty Lad] -- every bit as cool as the SHOWCASEs I've picked up! I love how the formative team-ups leading to the first actual "Defenders" in Marvel Feature 1-3-- DR. STRANGE #183, SUB-MARINER #22 and 34-35, and INCREDIBLE HULK #126-- are included, along with the stories from AVENGERS 115-8 that cross over with issues of THE DEFENDERS proper. And after some of the sub-standard SA stories and art in my SHOWCASEs (which I absolutely wanted, don't get me wrong!), I'm loving the bronze age Marvel writing and art-- especially Sal Buscema. A pleasant first ESSENTIAL. [Cool]

Ooh, I -loved- the Gene Colan artwork on ToD and Bill Sienkiewicz on those early MOON KNIGHT issues, before he got all "post-modern". That they're written by Wolfman and Moench, respectively, doesn't hurt!

I'd really be bummed if these are totally off the table, especially the Captain Carrot and Suicide Squad showcases.

I was really hoping that the showcase line would start to move toward more bronze/modern age material, as the SA and GA showcases are killing the Archive line (which I'm heavily invested in)

They're supposed to be released in the second half of 2008, according to the DC Panel at the Baltimore con (the summary's posted at newsarama.com).

Info at those panels isn't always so reliable, though. But let's hope.
