I don't know if I'm aboard for the whole trip yet... a series of minis with bookends totalling over 30+ issues seems pretty grandiose, and I felt a lllllittle burned when I finished up Earth/Universe/Paradise X and the multitude of one-shots there.
But I'm on-board for anything with art by JH Williams III-- even if Morrison wants to expound on his bellybutton.

just read it...
it was awesome, so many ideas, the story was awesome, can't wait to see more.
And the artwork JHW3...what can i say, it was fantastic, magical, wonderful and inspiring...
all i want to say is wow!

yeh, wow. this rocked. When Morrison get's it right it's awesome. I loved these characters. Until i read the book i thought they were going to be the focus and i was prepared to shell out all dosh right there.
Then i got to the end. awgh. goddam.
the cast of the rest of the series interests me (Klarion, not being written by Byrne? SO there.) but
Awgh. just awgh. Gimmix, the Whip, Dynomyter (sic), the Vigilante. AWGH. Even Boy Blue & I, Spyder.
But ESPECIALLY Gimmix. arrrrghrlgh.
Posted by Vudoo on :
Even Morrisons throw away ideas like Gimmix - would love to see more of here - and Blue Boy would be fun to learn more about.
Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :
The story seemed even better when I read it a second time.
All the mini-series does make it seem like a major undertaking and investment.
Hopefully the mini-series will be as good.

I can't stress how much I am looking forward to this. Klarion the Witchy-Boy? Rock on, DC! From all your comments, it seems that it's just bursting with ideas so far, and I'd expect nothing less.
I also cannot wait for Morrison's Superman, but that's neither here nor there...
Posted by Pov on :
All*Star Superman, right? You could always start a topic about it here in GYM'LL.
The more, the merrier, and we can never discuss too many comics! Except DOOM PATROL or anything by Rob Liefeld. But even THEY seem to end up getting topics around here...
Posted by Kid Psychout on :
heh, generally as DP has become an object of lewd ridicule, i've noticed.
but, back to topic, was asked by a friend if Gimmix is meant to be Merry, Girl of a Thousand Gimmics.
At first i thought that Jaqueline Pemberton must have been another member of that ill-starred family owing to Merry's obvious age in Old Justice. Now i think back, is this correct?
And a Gimmix: Year One: Starting The Convention Circuit mini-series already has one loyal follower, hear that Morrison?
Posted by ferroboy on :
I figured Gimmix had to be related for the same reasons: Pemberton name, red hair, and the gimmicks. I would have liked to see more about her. Hmm...maybe Mrs. King was dead and Jacqueline was pretendint to be her?
I, Spyder...too bad about him, but what did he have to live for once Jack Knight retired?
I'm most sorry about Greg Saunders (or Sanders, as it's written in this book).
But, yeah, like was said, even Morrison's throwaway ideas are more interesting than those of the main ideas of many other writers.
Posted by rickshaw1 on :
Wasn't Gimmix wearing a red wig?
Anyway, got it, read it, liked it. But several of the mini's don't interest me. I will most definately be there for the Zatanna one, thought the cover art doesn't appeal to me. Anything that draws her back into DC proper.
Posted by ferroboy on :
Was she? Oh, and I messed up about I, Spyder. His enemy was the Shade, so I guess he did still have something to live for.
I do think I'm going to see this series through. It's spread out over a year so I think it's affordable.
Posted by Stargazer on :
I really liked this issue as well. When I was reading the release dates of the mini series it seems like so long...I thought they were all gonna be released together. Of course thats what i get for thinking. ( I know someone was thinking that)
I really enjoyed the issue and read it a few times. Its a keeper.
Posted by RTVU2 on :
I think i will get all the minis.
If you look at the publishing list, there are only two months where there are three titles coming out. All the other months are two titles a piece. All the minis seem to have a skip month in publishing.
Good enough for me to get all the minis.

The art teams for the 7 mini's are as follows:
The Manhattan Guardian -Cameron Stewart
Shining Knight -Simone Bianchi
Zatanna -Ryan Sook
Klarion the Witch Boy -Frazer Irving
Frankenstein -Doug Mahnke
Mister Miracle -Pascal Ferry( !!!)
and
Bulleteer -Yanick Paquette & Michael Bair
--based on those solicits, the only mini I'm not interested in character- or artwise is Manhattan Guardian. Shining Knight, Zatanna, Bulleteer and Mr. Miracle are definitely going on my orders. If I get the chance and Gary can host some images for me, I'll post pics from the 7 Soldiers DC Horizon instore promo. Awesome-looking stuff.

What I want to know is why Michael Bair is only doing inking. I remember him doing the artwork on some issues of Infinity, Inc. and Young All-Stars. I thought his stuff was beautiful. I wish he'd do more on his own.
Posted by Pov on :
I've heard Bair is S-L-O-O-O-O-O-W. Not that that's any impediment to a pencilling gig nowadays , but...
Yeah, I remember his work from YAS... he also did the early issues of HELLSTORM: Prince of Lies for Marvel (Which sucked through no fault of his, that series didn't get good until Warren Ellis got the job...) But he's made a career for himself as an inker, and a damn good one, I think. Still, it -would- be nice to see him handle full art chores, if only for a mini or one-shot.

I’ll be picking all of these up. This should be a fun ride, with an onslaught of fun ideas that I’m looking forward to. I can’t wait to see what he does with Shining Knight and Zatanna!
Posted by DrakeB3004 on :
I liked the Zero issue. The art was amazing! From the urban stuff, to the western stuff (I thought I was reading "Blueberry" for a minute), and the sci-fi stuff.
The premise of mysterious benefactors to seven soldiers to combat some uber-evil actually doesn't interest me that much. Having a team being "put together" isn't as interesting as coming together on their own (y'know, like boy bands ). Still, it's not enough to put me off the series.
The thing I'm apprehensive about is the seven mini-series format. Now it's seven different characters with seven different art teams. What's lost is the group dynamic (which Morrison did really well in the Zero issue), and now I have to figure out if I "should" get all seven or if not, which of the seven to get and will I only be getting a piecei of the picture? I don't like waiting for trades, but I may for this. I guess I'll wait to see what the mini's look like.
Regarding the Zero issue, if those "six" were meant to be seven, it'd be interesting to know who the seventh was supposed to be (the one who chickened out). And Spyder mentions the change he underwent, but none of the others did. The Whip certainly would have since she was narrating. Why wouldn't they all have undergone that process? (maybe Boy Blue got his horn from them?) And if these mysterious 7 were responsible for forming the team, how does that fit in with the Vigilante taking out the ad and choosing the team? Was he being influenced by The7? Was he working with them? It doesn't quite make sense (not yet anyway).
Posted by Outdoor Miner on :
It's possible the one who initially copped out will be one of the new Seven.
Picked up the Zero ish today. The second-to-last copy of my store's reorder. Seems to be doing pretty well.
Based on this and an advance copy of Shining Knight #1 I looked through, I'm in for the whole thing.

It -looks- fabulous. I forgot to preorder it, so I have something to look forward to this weekend.
Posted by Blacula on :
Its weird how small-time Titan (but big-time fave of mine) Mal Duncan has been kinda pastiched or paid homage to or whatever at least twice that we know of in this series so far.
First with Boy Blue's horn which is clearly some kind of version of Mal's Gabriel Horn.
And secondly with this new black Manhattan Guardian who looks exactly like Mal did when he was the Guardian for a while.
Part of me kinda wishes that Morrison had just used Mal in this series and thereby increased his profile enormously but knowing how some second-string characters fare when they appear in big crossovers like this part of me's also glad he didn't.
Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :
Shining Knight was OK. I can't say that it got me more excited for the mini series or the whole series. It definitely was a set-up issue. I am still looking forward to all the miniseries and will set aside some time in April 2006 to reading everything at once.
The theme of seven did pop up here as Justin was the seventh knight. It mentioned in the preview for the Zatanna Mini that she goes on a reality show. I bet there are 6 other housemates.

Haven't checked out Shining Knight yet, but Seven Soldiers #0 was awesome. Soooo much going on...and the ending was a classic "Holy Shit" moment, even though you knew it was coming.
I liked Gimmix a real lot, and I liked Morrison's portrayal of the Vigilante (hate to see him go though!).
A question: In the beginning, it appears that the Spyder that shows up here isn't actually the one that fought the Shade/Starman/Hawkman & Green Arrow (#5-6 of Hawkman?), but possibly his brother? Anyone else pick up on this? Also, "I, Spyder" was the Spyder after being 'fixed up' (for lack of a better phrase) by the Seven, correct?
I'm with OM that Blue Boy's horn is probably Mal's. Where did someone read that Manhatten Guardian wasn't going to be Mal?

I think so, but at this point we really don't know what that means or how it affected the guy.
If memory serves, the guy who showed up in HAWKMAN looked more like the Golden Age version. I'm betting the guy in SS #0 is a relative. I guess they decided the Shade didn't track down all the Ludlows after all.
The name "I, Spyder" is likely both a nod to the Golden Age strip, which was called "Alias the Spider", and "I Spy". Possibly the game;less likely to be the old TV show.
Posted by Kinetix on :
Yeah, when he's being fixed up by the Seven Unknown Men, Spider says something to the effect of there being a tunic that belonged to his father, and brother.
And what happened to him, turning up as a more modern, badass, smoking, tattooed 'hip' version... It really screamed "Ultimate Spider" to me.

The Sheeda are the main thread that connects Seven Soldiers to Shining Knight so far. With an honourable mention to the earlier SSes having a previous version of the same character.
The primary story of the Seven Soldiers will be issues 0 and 1. 0 is the setup, with the seven miniseries being self-contained and introducing the seven characters who will be in the final issue.

also, I thought that "I, Spyder" was kind of funny homage to "I, Vampyre" aka Andrew Bennett basing on my observation that Grant Morrison likes to do something extraordinary and magical (look at Klarion the Witch Boy and Zatanna for example) and he's kind of a "Gothic" writer who likes to "experiment" anything on non-super-heroes stuff. That's my opinion, and yours may differ.

Seven Soldiers has been SOOOOOOOOOOOO good so far!!!
And this's coming from someone who usually considers Grant Morrisson to be THE most over-rated writer in all of comics!
But this series is Rocking with a capital R! Every issue has been super-enjoyable and hugely interesting and the latest one with Zatanna is no exception! In fact I'd call it the best of the bunch!
Now I've just got to endure the torture of a 2-month wait for the next issue! But it'll be worth it I think.
And to think I only started collecting this series 'cause I needed to spend more than £5 in order to use my credit card! Would've kicked myself if I'd missed out on this.
Go. Buy. Now.

Seven Soldiers has been top stuff so far - the opening mini had just the right blend of exposition, characterisation and mystery.
Guardian felt a bit off due to my dislike of the Subway Pirates and the arbitrary change from Newsboy Legion to Newsboy Army, but other than that, this was great. I really feel for the new Guardian, even though I was a huge fan of the Jim Harper clone version. (Liked how they mentioned they bought the Rights to the name/look!)
Shining Knight had amazing artwork! God Bless those little Europeans... And the story was amazing too...
And today hopefully Zatanna is waiting for me to pick it up from the CBS this afternoon!
It's all good... A lot better than Infinite Crisis is shaping up to be. It seems like Seven Soldiers is expanding and building on the past, while Identity/Infinite Crisis is trying to recast the past in a new light - one it doesn't need, IMHO...

Not sure what I think about this one yet-- I liked the inventiveness mixed with retro-cool of the other installments, though.
I found myself really curious about the other members of the two 'circles'. Y'think that the plight of the magical one is 'final'? Guess I'd better not get too attached to any of the 'low self-esteem' heroes... considering what happened to one of them in 7 SOLDIERS #1.
I thought Ibis the Invincible was fun... the way he seemed to be slinking around, making odd pronouncements. His 1930's-looking wife (with a flapper hairdo) was intriguing, too. Were the other characters new, or 'classic'? Dr. 13, I think, has appeared before... not sure about the others.
If this led to a more stage-magic oriented Zatanna, who disguised her 'real' magics inside prestidigitation, I'd be happy. I imagine I'm in the minority there, though.
That is, if the Zatanna we know survives the series... with a new 'apprentice', I wonder.
Posted by Kid Psychout on :
Ibis the Invincible and Taia are from the Fawcett comics of the 40's i believe.
and, yes, Dr. 13 has appeared before, his stories from the seventies where a kind of horror scooby-doo set up "see? it was old man jenkins in a wig and glow in the dark jodhpurs".
Don't know who Tim Ravenwind was but i really liked him.
And was it just me, but is King Ra-Man probably Prince Ra-Man, Mind-Master re-envisioned as a tibetan tulpa?
Guardian has not grabbed me, but Zatanna was great, the best treatment a series starring her has got since the 60's, in my opinion.
And i loved the cameo from Gimmix, though Zatanna's great quote "We've just listened to an hours account of monster sex more lurid than anything outside of Starro the Conqueror's porn stash" had me on the floor.
Looking forward to more.

Prince Ra-Man was killed in CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, so this is probably a new guy. Or not.

I'm told that Ravenwind was first seen as a youngster way back in the Len Wein/Bernie Wrightson era of Swamp Thing, and that Mark Millar brought him back for his run on the book.

Klarion #1!
This was a serious reboot of the character, wasn't it? Teekl's been around forever, of course, and on Barbelith someone mentioned that the Draaga and Horigal had both appeared in the past. But as far as I know--correct me if I'm wrong--everything else was original.
An underground village of corpse-raising Puritan witches. Mahvelous. And the art was awesome, even though I normally prefer photorealism. Nice (and subtle) tie-in to the Guardian, too--even if editorial had to make sure you got it on the endpage.

KLARION #2...
This is some great stuff. Completely overshadows the original Klarion, IMO. How in the world are they going to reconcile the various versions? It's not like 'old' Klarion/Teekl, All-squadroner Sir Justin and Winged Victory, etc are dead, or anything (but a CRISIS *is* coming...).
#2 was equal parts creepy, symbolic, fun and twisted. The Puritan background is inspired. Was that a part of the original character's origin? I don't know enough about him to remember.

I don't know about anyone else, but reading these piecemeal (one issue at a time, that is), I'm getting the Morrison set all mixed up with the Crisis stuff. Kept thinking Klarion #2 was going to tie into Day of Vengeance....and keep thinking Shining Knight is the knight in DoV...
Klarion is much better than expected! Never knew the character from before, but this is one smart, adventure-oriented, likeable witch-boy. (Can't complain about the cat, either. )

MISTER MIRACLE!!! Thought it was going to be so-so, but since I had the others... my favourite of the series, because Morrison ties in the New Gods (a long-time favourite) in an enticing manner. I figured it was just going to be an escape artist character, but no link to Kirby's Gods, other than the name. We just haven't seen Barda yet (or maybe we have?).
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
Haven't read Mister Miracle yet, but will.
I think Manhatten Guardian might have been my favorite so far, but it's tough comparing them all, despite one writer. What an awesome story though...
Klarion is still out-there and fascinating, and Zatanna is kicking ass. Shining Knight #4 was a great ending to that mini, and my favorite Shining Knight issue.
On to Mister Miracle! I'm looking forward to Bulleteer too.
Posted by Tamper Lad on :
It's too bad Ferry is off Mister Miracle after the first issue. I see Ferry is in the Marvel Dec solicitations. Rumors of a Marvel exclusive abound. DC shouldn't have let this guy go. Adam Strange blew me away.
Too bad, the preview art looked fantastic for SS:MM #1.
Posted by Fat Cramer on :
Problem is, I don't want any of them to die - not that I have a lot invested in the characters emotionally, but I think they're interesting enough to continue - and some of them could make for some unusual stories to tell in the "new" DCU.
Bullleteer should be interesting, but I'm very curious to see Frankenstein as a hero. Will he be the dumb child-like monster who somebody else will control, or a conscious being with his own will?
Posted by Pov on :
Ferry was fired off MM after he signed his Marvel exclusive, but -before- it was announced. That sucks sooooo bad... The replacement better be up to par, or I'll drop this no matter HOW good the first issue is. That'll show that trigger-fingered editor...
Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be following Ferry's Marvel work. Wasn't he solicited for an Ultimate title? :blech: None of that crap for me!
Posted by Fat Cramer on :
Ferry's art was a great fit to this series - I read the replacement artist is Billy Dallas Patton -
But - by Metron's Chair! - the next issue isn't out until December 7th!
Posted by Pov on :
Probably because Patton's coming in cold. Again, very sloppy work from a punitive editor. Feh.

Pending the conclusion of the ZATANNA series, I think this is the 7 SOLDIERS mini I enjoyed the most. I never gave a thought to the 'old' Klarion, so getting to know him here has been fun. I like the character-- and the nature/origin of his home. And Teekl is a hoot. The Klarion/Teekl composite was one freaky looking creature. Wonder if that'll be an ongoing schtick, should these characters live past the end of this saga?
The overarching plot, involving the Sheeda (sp?) percolates along from mini to mini. It's all right- but doesn't quite live up to the various characters and the many sidetrips present in each mini.
Posted by Fat Cramer on :
Funny how the Sheeda almost seem irrelevant (is that sacrilege?) - the story really seems to focus most interest on the heroes' journey to encounter the enemy, rather than the eventual encounter itself.

Though this story was moderately entertaining and did introduce the provocative element of superhero porn/ internet chat rooms, I don't think the source characters have been used enough to justify a brand new version. Why not make the character of Windshear the central character of the story? She could've been retired and soured on the superhero thing-- married to the hero wannabe.
For me, the least of the seven soldiers thus far seen.

ZATANNA 4 and FRANKENSTEIN 1 are out. Zatanna left me scratching my head, not unusual for a Grant Morrison comic. I think the structure of endings that aren't endings is hurting these mini-series. It worked a bit more for the IC lead-ups, perhaps only because the 'common' ending was only a couple of weeks away. Here, it's months... and it begins to pall. Frankenstein was enjoyable-- especially, for me, the parts that weren't about the lead character.
I hope Uglyhead, gotta love that name, somehow survives Frankenstein's actions. He could be a fun villain, or would that be villain's catspaw?
Loved his telepathic quirk of actually seeing people's thoughts as captions in a thought bubble. That alone oughtta get Uglyhead a shot as Dr. Psycho's apprentice or something.

Mr. Miracle 2 is out. While it's by no means my favorite of the 7 soldier titles, I enjoyed this one much more than #1.
A glimmer of what's going on with the new gods (lower case intended) is shone and makes all the difference. Now, there's some purpose to this mini.
I like Shilo (we share a last name), but want to know about Scott Free (perhaps the best super-hero 'real name' in all comics).
Don't like the colors used here for skin tones. Everyone looks the same muddy, racially indeteriminate shade except for Shilo.

Frankenstein #1 - pure genius
End of Zatanna - loved it. Probably my favorite of all of them. I wish Morrison could do an ongoing Zatanna series. I just don't feel like most writers have shown the same respect for Zee and understanding of the weirdness of magic that Morrison has shown. Written by him with art by the artist here, this could be an amazing ongoing series, although I understand that Morrison's crazy mind these days makes it hard for him to stay on one project for a long time.
Mister Miracle - good so far, but I'll wait and see. Not loving it as much as the others at this point. This is also the only title so far that I'm disliking the differences to the original characters, as Kirby's Fourth World is sacrosanct IMO, even though no one can seem to get it right besides Kirby (not even Byrne or Simonsin).
Bulleteer - very interested. Supposedly #2 is where we learn some real secrets and answers and things become clearer
Klarion - loved it. Unique, original, excellent.
Guardian - my other favorite. Genius. All I can say is genius.
Shining Knight - this wasn't as great as the others IMO, although the final issue had a very pleasant and unexpected twist and made me sit up and take notice.
Posted by Pov on :
Mr. Miracle seems to be cursed with regard to its artists-- Patton is off the book after issue 2. Probably means yet further delays...
Klarion has been my surprise favorite thus far, followed closely by Shining Knight and Zatanna. I love Zatara's "hiding place" for his Books of Magick... I wouldn't mind spending a few lifetimes "researching" them.
Bulleteer -looks- pretty; I didn't care too much for the first issue storywise, but we'll see. Same for Frankenstein... cool, freaky artwork, wait-n-see on the story.
Manhattan Guardian is the only mini I dismissed out-of-hand... just not interested. But overall, I'm enjoying most of the mini's and looking forward to the overarching resolution.
Posted by Vee on :
Must say, this "event" hasn't come close to living up to the hype it has received. Klarion was kind of fun to read and had an intersting origin; Shining Knight was okay as was Guardian. Only read the first issue of Mister Miracle and hated it so I won't bother picking up the rest. Frankenstein is an intersting new take on a well known character and Bulleteer is on my "give it one more issue" list. Of all of them I've only really enjoyed Zatanna.
That being said, I've pretty much hated the artwork on all of them. They all seem to be drawn but people on hallucenogenics. Ughhh!
Not sure I'll make it to the finale, it's just not doing it for me.

I think this one could end up being my favorite of the lot. It out weirds even KLARION and that was just bizarre.

I really loved the first two issues. It's actually the only two of the lot i've actually paid for to this point. Though I'll get a set of the trades when the inevitable hardcover set comes out.
Weird? I don't even know how you'd describe issue 2 in terms of genre.

Try "Pure Morrison". That about sums it up, ya think?

I agree guys, this was awesome. Right now, this might be my favorite of the seven, and Frankenstein #2 my favorite actual issue.
I didn't think comics like this could be made.

I can't decide if I like this or not. With only one issue to go, I hope there's a clear explanation of what's been going on with the New Gods. Baron Bedlam (or his 'suit or suits of flesh) was/were pretty hot. The whole porcelain skin thing was just sort of dropped in there and not examined enough (a facet of some Morrison stories that's either fascinating or infuriating-- sometimes both). I kind of like scenes like the one where Shilo's best friend and girlfriend are seduced by the bad guy... then reduced to leering stooges. This time, the girl wrapped around the bad guy's leg *doesn't* lead to a 'fight it, honey' speech. Shilo loses and loses big.
Don't know when I've seen the main character beat up *this* badly. Broken limbs, major facial damage *and* he's castrated? That panel at the end showing a wheelchair-bound Shilo in a store reaching up to a high shelf for a package of DEPENDS was one sad and touching image.
With an issue to go, there must be some hope ahead.
Still and all, I'm left asking where in the heck is Scott Free? Morrison hasn't overcome that central question. Same for Bulleteer, in my book. Where's Bulletman? And Windshear?

SS: Frankenstein #3
Must re-inforce skull to contain brain meltdown. I cannot believe how good this is. The history of the Bride character is beyond weird. I like it.
I regret that there will only be one more issue of this one. I want more issues with Frankie and a potential cast of anachronisms from victorian science.

Okay...Seven Soldiers #1 (the final issue in this mega series) and....
I can't believe we had to wait all this time for this! To me it read like the comic book version of one of those pieces of "modern" art in which the "artist" scoops up paint in his hands and flings it at a blank canvass (like a monkey flings "poo"! ) and then calls it art.
The best word I can come up with to describe this issue is "discombobulated", the worst is unsuitable language for LegionWorld, so I'll settle for dreck.
After reading all of The Seven Soldiers of Victory run faithfully from the start, I'm very disappointed.
Did it make any sense to anyone? Was it satisfying? Maybe someone here can translate it into a language I can understand.
Posted by Tamper Lad on :
Er yeah I felt that my poor brain needed some chemical enhancement to make it make a little more sense.
I thought the art was pretty though. Though I'll need the annotated version with commentary before I can actually figure out what happened.

I thought it was absolute genius. I hadn't read any of the SSoV titles, and felt bad about that, so I picked this up. Morrison out-Kirby's Kirby and out-Moore's Moore, simultaneously, while he out-Morrison's Morrison, too. I didn't understand none of it, of course.

I'd been a HUGE fan of all the minis leading up to this issue and I too was disappointed. Big time!
*SPOILERS*
Mister Miracle's "death" scene was soooooo obvious and cliched and yet so typical of today's 'kewl' comic writers(eg. Morrisson, Ellis, Millar, etc) that I almost wanted to throw my issue down in disgust. As soon as Shilo offered to take the place of the Aurakle in the shackles I absolutely knew that the next page would have Darkseid shooting him in the head - and lo and behold, there it was. If Morrisson thinks the idea that the World's Greatest Escape Artist can't escape a bullet to the head is some sort of poetic irony he's seriously mistaken.
My other big disappointment with the issue was that the whole framing sequence with the narrator at the beginning and the end and the reveal of the surprise Big Bad (I think? This part made no sense.) turns out to be Zor...! A minor villain that appeared in one of the Zatanna issues and was then never mentioned again. And suddenly out of nowhere he's the Terrible Tailor of Time? Where did that come from!?!
OK enough ranting. Between this and the recent equally disappointing end to Planetary (probably the Granddaddy of issue delayed series') I'll never again waste time getting invested in a series where the creators are more concerned with themselves than their readers.

I kind of had the feeling that I'd be going "huh?"
I like the idea of the seven soldiers each doing something but separate and not knowing about the others. It just needed to be shown more clearly.
Posted by Outdoor Miner on :
The big problem is that Morrison's original script for #1 was twice as big as the agreed-upon page count would allow, so he had to cut out a lot.
I still thought it was great, and I could follow it fairly well, but that compression really did hurt the book.

You might have a point if Morrison left it at that, but he didn't.
What Shilo does at the end is far more impressive than dodging a bullet.

It did seem to wrap up quickly, and by now I'd sort of forgotten what the whole Tailor of Time in the swamp was about.
The Zatanna story worked best for me. I liked the newspaper format of the Guardian. You have to question if these seven could only work separately; if they'd formed a group (like the initial seven), they would have been wiped out. We know there's something cooking with the New Gods, but I wonder if we'll see much of these characters in the DCU, outside of some 52 appearances.
It's hard to get my head around the idea that the Sheeda are future Earthlings who have to consume their past to stay alive. Isn't this "time-traveller kills his grandfather" paradox?

jog-the blog offers his explanation of what happened, and what it all meant.

I still don't understand it all, but more rereads are helping me put it all together. I still think its brillant. Pure genius, and every little fault shows the unbriddled genius of Morrison, moving forward constantly despite the immense craziness of it all.
Great link, FC!
Can't wait for some fan to have a 'point by point' blog on this so I can see *all* the connections!

Or cut to the chase and go to Barbelith's wiki/annotations , which goes panel by panel for each book, lists all the characters, timeline, etc etc.

I only just got this and I've read it the once so far - but like Cobie says re-reads are probably essential - and I liked it. But it was a bit of a let down for such a long wait. I might have to re-read the whole series again to pick up on a lot of the story elements. Like I said I've only read it once and nearly all of Grant Morrisons stuff I find is better on re-reading(he puts so many layers into things) so I'll wait a couple of days and let it "percolate" and then go back to it. I'll let you know how I got on.
