DEMONS!! POLTERGIESTS!! PHANTASMS!!! BLACK MAGIC WITCHES!!!

All aimed at li'l children!

Seriously, I read lots of Harvey comics. I collected all the Richie Rich titles, and also collected the Casper, Hot Stuff, Wendy and Spooky the Tuff Little Ghost series.

But when I think back on it, I'm surprised that children's comic titles like DEVIL KIDS (a second HOT STUFF book) were ever even allowed to be published.

Doesn't it all seem a little weird?

Don't forget Lil' Lotta.

I don't want to think about how much damage she did to little overweight children all over the world.

And would it have killed Li'l Dot to wear a solid color dress?

Those girls retained water like crazy! Dot, Gloria, Lotta, Mrs. Rich... not a one had any ANKLES!

Cadbury and $Dollar$ were da BOMB, though!

I'm surprised Disney never sued over STUMBO.

When I was a kid I bought Richie Rich comics, due to the popularity of the Saturday morning cartoon at the time. However, I was also going to a fundamental Christian school at the time and all my friends warned me about Wendy and Hot Stuff, basically saying they were a gateway to satanism.

So, yeah, people did look at it that way. I am surprised that there wasn't more, tho.

In hindsight, I kinda wonder why they didn't try to warn me away from Richie, too... I mean all that emphasis on materialsm isn't very Christian, either, tho Richie did try to do good deeds with his wealth.

BTW, speaking of rich kids trying to do good deeds anyone ever read The Green Team? I read their first appearance in First Issue Spectacular #3 or something (a highlight of so-bad-its-good comics). They were part of the DC Explosion that quickly disappeared and for good reason. Oy.

Richie Rich... yeah, we know what money is the root of, don't we?

Harvey Comics warped my mind!!

I'd guess because even though you had McCarthyism and Wertham f-ing things up, the books didn't have to contend with the rabid PC-ism that you have today, and parents weren't as idiotic back then.

My wife's cousin, who has since passed away, heard that Harry Potter was about satanism. So, he wouldn't let them read it. My wife was ticked off about it, and even tried to speak to him...but his mind was made up.

Between phony would-be christians ruining the name and rampant stick-up-the-ass-itis, this generations kids are gonna be even more f-ed up.

Just last night NBC had one of those scare-the-hell-outta-ya news magazine shows on talking about how small kids see too much sex on tv in the form of shows like friends, etc. Then, the very next segment was about the so-called children of god cult, and how they had ritualistic sex parties involving children as young as three. And NBC didn't seem to get the irony. "Sex on tv is bad for your kids to see...now, here's some sex on tv."

Alls I'm sayin' is, if Jackie Jokers was straight, then I'm a monkey's uncle.

He was the gayest thing since gay came to Gaytown!

Ah... Gray Morrow.

Did you know Morrow did the storyboards for the 2nd & 3rd seasons (1968-70) of SPIDER-MAN? Yep-- those dark, demented, psychedelic cartoons with the wild jazz music. I sometimes wonder what the results might have been if he'd actually done any Spider-Man comic-books??

I put together a gallery of his art here...

I remember reading Richie Rich when i was a kid. I liked Irona the robot maid but thought the rich kids like Reggie Van Dough and Mayda Munny just too creepy and depressing for words!!!!

I think someone touched on this in another thread. Readers pretty much went through the Harvey Comics phase within a few years. At a certain age, the one-note comedy of a boy with limitless wealth or a ghost who wants to be friendly wears off. But there was always another batch of six or seven year olds waiting to be charmed by them.

I read Harvey, Archie and DC comics when I was a pre-teen (never cared much for Marvel) and you can see which one stuck! [Big Grin]

I saw the RICHIE RICH movie on TV recently.

Isn't it time for a HARVEY revival?

Did kids stop buying these all of a sudden, or what? I rememebr when I could find at least 10 Harvey titles at the grocery store at any time. Now, they don't even exist, do they? What happened? Did kids decide their money was better spent at an arcade?

Dark Horse is releasing a CASPER archive in April. Possibly the first of several.

I was talking about this thread's topic with someone a few weeks ago. It's fun to revisit it.

This has to be one of the funniest lines in LW history. I still laugh at it five years later.

Reading this thread makes me wish for a Best of Harvey Comics trade.

And that's considering my only concrete memory of Harvey Comics is a Wendy story where she gets a new costume that's several sizes too big, and the wrong color (of course, by the end, it's red and it fits just right.)

There is, sort of.

Harvey Comic Classics
Vol. 1 is Casper, Vol. 2 Richie Rich, Vol. 3 Hot Stuff, Vol. 4 Baby Huey, and Vol. 5 The Harvey Girls (Little Dot, Little Lotta, & Little Audrey)

My favorite scene from any Harvey Comic was still a SAD SACK. "Hi-Fi" puts a wireless speaker inside a trash can, then, from hiding, yells "Hey, FATSO!" into a mic when the Sarge walks by. Sarge figures someone's hiding in the can, so he starts kicking it violently, as "Oof! Ouch! Aug!" can be heard coming from within. Just then, the C.O. walks by and sees what's going on...

"Sergeant! WHY are you kicking that TRASH can?"
"It was being INSUBORDINATE, sir!"

Next panel: Sarge is in a straitjacket, as the C.O. tells the camp doctor, "Better keep him under observation for a couple of weeks."

I'm surprised no one's ever created a super-hero team homage to the Harvey characters.

HeeHee. In TRASH LASS, GIRL GARBAGE COLLECTOR, there are 2 characters heavily influenced by Harvey Comics...

GOODBAD GIRL wears a Wendy red jumper for a costume, and KNOWITALL was a kid billionaire.

Jeepers! I must be losing my touch with promoting obscure characters.

I totally expected there to be at least three or four threads on Manlet by now!

History: "Manlet is a tiny member of Miracles, Inc. He is so small he has to eatbird seed."

Eat birdseed?! OUCH! That kooky comics genius, Wally Wood!

I wonder if Misfit was the first monster-who-speaks-like-a-surfer-dude character?

Is "Eando Binder" really Otto Binder?

Posted by lancesrealm on :

I just looked up the Harvey Classic Comics - do I understand this right? Almost 500 pages, in color, for less than 15 bucks!? I might be picking these up soon.

I've also been trying to remember how long I bought Harvey. I likely started as soon as I could read - I remember having some comics when I was about 4 years old. I stopped buying them when I was 11 - that was when I graduated to superhero comics. So, a maximum or 7 years.

Maybe Harvey should have tried to retain readers by having "Crisis on Infinite Hot Stuffs," or by frequently killing off a major character. (Hey, Caspar is already a ghost, bringing him back would be no trouble at all!)

Eando = Earl and Otto Binder. The brothers used it for jointly written sci fi and comic series.

And for the record, Satan is an incredibly awesome villain.

In the second issue of Pocket Comics, we get his groovy origin (which kind of contradicts the above, but whatev...). Turns out he was a soldier in the service of Ponce de Leon, who stumbled across and drank from The Fountain of Youth, which makes him immortal but at the price of hideously disfiguring him!

Posted by lancesrealm on :

Hmm...I wonder who first came up with the plot idea of immortality at the cost of ugliness? I actually read a Tarzan novel recently (from 1933) which utilized this. Can anyone think of an example that predates this?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Isn't there a Greek myth along those lines? Where someone is granted immortality but not eternal youth?
