Oooh! Now I *really* can't wait for Wednesday!

Thanks for the heads up, Icey! Definitely be one of my first reads alongside the last Legion issue.

This is becoming one of my favorite titles Joss Whedon Rocks!!!!

Posted by huntdrouin on :

I totally agree! I love the campy nature that's been building between Kitty and Emma. Kitty's always been my favorite and now she's all grown up.

The guest at the end was waaaay out of left field for me. Totally loved it, but one of the last people I'd expect! Rock on!!!

Posted by Future on :

The special guest was indeed a surprise. I'm going to reserve total judgment about it until further events are explained.

Loved Kitty in this issue. Beast didn't quite get the focus I expected, and I'm actually upset by Wing's current plight that he's gotten himself into.

This new villain Ord is definitely on my "They're Evil!" list after this issue. I don't hate the character, I just don't like him and his actions within the book. [Big Grin] Kinda like Lantern and Arrow recently in Legion.

I leafed through it down at the Trader last night.

As Future said, I'll reserve judgment... but as things stand right now, I'm disappointed. I don't see any reasonable way to explain this return.

I agree with Pov

I don't care how they explin it I'm just happy to have them back!!!!!!

I've yet to read it but Whedon better have a extremely well thought out & good reason for the event.

It's just like this season of Big Brother: Project DNA. Do Not Assume!

That's really _______'s identical twin. They've been switching in and out of continuity!

... this kinda has me pissed off. I was quitting the X-books around the time they killed Piotr off-- people have heard me rant about how they decided the books were based on the movie, and not the other way around [Smile] -- and his death was really the capper. (Especially with the next month's cover, Cyclops in a black visor and leather get-up... [Disgusting] ). I was shocked that they'd killed him off, but the character was played out. His family was gone, he'd betrayed teh dream and returned as the Prodigal... the character was just treading water. His sacrifice to rid the world of the disease that took his sister from him was very in-character.

All that said, I don't see how they can reasonably explain his death and cremation away in any manner that won't make a farce out of the original story. And I'm suddenly glad I didn't fall for the hype around Astonishing .

Posted by Future on :

I'm glad to see the character back, but like Pov and SoM...there's really no way you could explain this return and make me happy. I'd accepted Colossus as dead; he doesn't need to be brought back. I don't know if Whedon did it for shock or what, but I really don't feel it was the brightest move. I'm having a hard enough time with Magneto being back, Xorn being around, and Jean always still hovering over us (X-Men: The End).

So much for dead means dead. That lasted, what, two years? Way to go, Joe Q.

As stated elsewhere, I love the series and this issue, but the only thing I liked about the Colossus return was Kitty's reaction...and that I could get if she was dreaming he had returned or someone had morphed into the character. I really don't like having a rug pulled out from under me, let alone a rug I had already thrown away and forgotten about.

Posted by DrakeB3003 on :

I knew it!! [Wink] ...even though I suspected it was Colossus, it was an exciting scene and buildup cuz you knew Kitty had to be the one to find him. I was never a big Colossus fan but I don't mind that he's back. Bringing Magneto back a month or two after he died is one thing, but something like this I can overlook if Joss gives us a good story out of it.

The cremated body thing could be explained with a body swiping/switching scenario prior to cremation (assuming there was no autopsy). I guess we'll find out next month what Joss has in mind.

>yawn<

Glad I stopped this book with issue 1.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

I missed him. A lot. Colossus is one of my three favorite X-Men (with Kitty and Kurt), and I can't help but smile very widely to see him back. It bothers me when characters die and are resurrected (I really didn't want to see Jean back), but I can't help but be hypocritical when it's one of my favorites.

I'm glad he's come back! I LOVED Kitty's reaction. I'm glad he's back.

And death/resurrection aside, I think his personality would be a welcome addition to this team. Wolverine is repetitive sometimes and Beast bores me, so I know *I'll* be happy. Different opinions and all that [Big Grin]

One other point--I found those two young mutants that Ord attacked to be very likeable, in a small amount of time. I like Joss Whedon's writing style.

Posted by Kid Psychout on :

apart from the whole Colossus thing (and to restate my general position; it's comic books people coming back from the dead is fine. as long as it's well done) i just love the interaction and dialogue.

Loved Josh and the others cutting off the Stepfords before they started off on one of their wierd expositionary tangents. If only people could do that whenever Claremont's Storm starts off on her "By the goddess, who's motherly yet strangely Darwinian ways have forced me to overcome my claustrophobia, that i developed as a child thief, and confront that i must save those who hate and etc etc etc

And i have to say that in only 4 pages he's made me care more for Hisako (call her GLO-BOT!)and Wing than in 15 issues of those pale new new mutants in X Academy.

And 4 issues of this book have been truer to the characters and made more sense than the whole Austen run on Uncanny.

Why's Josh literally bronze? Does that have something to do with his powers, or did he just go wild with the self-tanner?

He's not literally bronze (and he's meant to be gold-coloured anyway).

And what happened was that:

1) A while back (in Dream's End, which is getting TPBed very soon, including the death of Colossus...), Wolfsbane got depowered.

2) Later, when Rahne turned back up @ the Institute, she was acting far more aggressively than before (& supressing her accent) and Josh developed a crush on her.

3) Over a game of pool, Josh reasoned out that the reason for all this was that, subconsciously, she couldn't handle life without "the wolf." Eventually, they kissed and he healed away her powerlessness (before you bring up the obvious, I think he should have healed $%^&* retard-boy's "cure" away too, especially based on Beast's explaination of his power in NM12. Bad glitch there). Unfortunately, she lost control and ripped a big hole in him (Dani Moonstar talked her down later, but she's still having problems).

4) In the hospital, Josh's teammates managed to get him to wake up and get himself under control long enough to heal himself. For one reason or another tho, he turned himself gold in the process [Smile]

Oh, and read New X-Men: Academy X!!!

Makes perfect sense. [Roll Eyes]

Maybe he should call himself Golden Boy... [Golden Boy]

Posted by Future on :

Josh's advisor, Danielle Moonstar, reasoned Josh did it to himself. He's actually an omega-level mutant, whose powers allow him to alter the molecules of the body, though he has no idea of this and can only do the baseline healing he discovered.

Dani thinks he tried to change himself as he always had wanted to be the perfect, "golden boy" and now he would get some of the attention he craves by standing out.

I checked, and I'm surprised no one's got a thread running about this book. Quite simply, this is the best X-Men story and art-wise since the original Claremont-Byrne era. Joss Whedon is a friggin GREAT storyteller, and Cassaday's art is sheer poetry. The jet swirl of the "fastball special" was genius. I am truly astonished. A book that actually outdoes the hype that surrounded it.

astonishing x men is great. joss really writes kitty pryde well, who is one of my favorites.

the four or five pages when kitty finds peter is great storytelling. i would be dumbstruck too. and then the conversaion after...was touching. im glad they brought back peter even if joss is only going to be on the book until #12. or so i hear from another legion worlder. but, cassaday has also done great work on the planetary series. cassaday is not stylistically stunning or styalized but i think he is one of the best storytellers out there. ever even.

i just hope emma frost dosnt have anything too sinister in store for kitty, but then emma always realized kitty's potential from the very begining.

The scene where Wolverine and Colossus do the fast-ball special almost made me cry. Whedon did it perfect, and didn't even have to mention ‘Fast Ball Special’, since we knew it was coming and were desperately waiting for it.

I honestly sat back for a minute and thought "damn...my X-Men are back."

Arrgh. I haven't been tempted to pick up an X-Book lo these many years and they have to tempt me with a "Fastball Special." That just gives me the warm fuzzies all over.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Matt, wait until you see it. First, you get the surprise reappearance with Peter, the best Peter/Kitty scene in 20 Years, the X-Men versus the bad guy, and then [kinda spoilers] the bad guy is getting away with no real way to catch him, leaving Wolverine to say something like “well there is an old fashioned way”, while looking at Peter (who he’s just seen is back from the dead)…and then Bam! Next page is a double page spread scene of Colossus hurling Logan at him with a fastball special, no dialogue, cuz none is needed.

B/t that scene and the one with Kitty and Peter the previous issue, I remember why I love the X-Men in the first place.

C'mon, matlock, you just know there's a book that's right on the edge of being dropped. Go ahead and drop it and pick up AXM. It's worth it. Trust me. I quote some others: "He does Claremont better than Claremont." (At least, these days.)

Any word on what will happen to the title when Whedon leaves? I heard he was on for a 12 issue stint. I can't imagine Marvel wanting to end the title there... 'Course, then maybe Wolverine can get some respite.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

I'm hoping that he doesn't leave at all...it's just too good an X-title right now!

Then again, there's the rumors that Bryan Singer is going to take over (or is that Ultimate X-Men?).

Posted by Future on :

Singer's run is supposed to be on Ultimate X-Men if I'm not mistaken.

As for Whedon, I hope they keep him around. I haven't seen any hype about this being his final arc or him following through and leaving after #12, so hopefully Marvel's on the ball and are negotiating with him behind the scenes.

This book really is his and I'd much rather see where Joss would run with it than have anyone else, even a favorite writer of mine, take over. The same can be said for Cassidy as penciller.

Long story short, icey knows what an X-Fan I used to be and has been hounding me to check out ASTONISHING. So when I saw DCBS was offering the first trade, "GIFTED", at half-price, I ordered it.

And dammit, I liked it. For all the reasons Cobie gave... it just feels like MY X-Men. The costumes. The fastball special. Cassaday's work, which has cleaned up real nice since his DESPERADOES work. And everybody sounded right. Joss seems to GET these characters; they haven't been this real since Claremont's first run... at his peak.

Arghh! Aloan Davis has me buying UNCANNY again, if only for his issues... slowly, slowly they're sucking me back in... I can feel it! [Frown] [Big Grin]

Aaaaaaand Astonishing #8 becomes the first core X-book I've bought new off the rack in... forever.

Well worth it. I grabbed 7 also, which with my trade purchase awhile back keeps me current. Whedon's writing had me in stitches in spots, especially throughout issue 7 (see my sig! [Big Grin] ) --Wolvie's NONthoughts while fighting "Godzilla" and the FF's cameo also.

With the ending to 7, 8's reveal wasn't too surprising, though I can't wait to find out WHY.

I can't believe I'm buying the "X" again... [No]

The series has been excellent, and I really want Whedon on for a 50 issue run! This is the first time ever for me that I can hardly wait for the next issue of an X-Books (I read Claremont's run at clips of 10-20 by having the back issues handy), and I can't handle the anticipation!

What I got from the article was that their CURRENT run is going to only be another twelve issues, but that they also are planning on another 12-issue arc PLUS a "Giant-Sized" Astonishing 1-shot at a furhter time. Not too shabby.

P.S. to Des-- I just remembered a really crappy drawing I did of Wolvie and Colossus in a Fastball Special back in HS-- if I find it, I may try to post it here. We'll see if it's as terrible as I remember... [Razz] [LOL]

Eh, looks like I misread. [Embarrassed]

This little bit posted at Newsarama confirms they're doing 24 issues total, plus the GS Astonishing:

quote:
Joss Whedon spoke extensively about his upcoming Serenity movie on Saturday at WonderCon, but also had a few words about his comic book work, first off, confirming what Marvel's solicitations for May suggested, that Astonishing X-Men #1-#12 is the creators's first year on the series.

From the panel:

Whedon and Cassaday announced at the Serenity panel that they will stick around for another year of Astonishing X-Men. Whedon said that after issue #12 ships, there will be a brief respite, followed by another 12-issues by Whedon/Cassaday. This will be capped off by Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men Annual #1 as Whedon called it.

This latest storyline with the sentient Danger Room doesn't really do anything for me. The concept itself seems done to death (it's a bit too "2001" for me) and is it me, or does most A.I. seem to have the same personality? Needless to say, I'll reserve final judgment since the story's not over, but it hasn't captivated me so far.

It also seems like there's less interesting character interactions going on too.

I just read this trade today and I was blown away!

I read the first two trades of the Claremont/Davis work (recent) and liked it. Brought back fun memories. Alan is my fave artist as well.

But Whedon is amazing on the X. Best X stuff I've read in many many years.

OMG I am enjoying Uncanny and Astonishing!!! Larocca being another fave...and my trust in Milligan's talent...are the X books good agaiN???

Whedon/Cassaday rock man!

Posted by armsfalloffboy on :

I have actually dropped Uncanny, marking the first time since 1989 I've skipped an X-core title. Depressing, actually, but I'm pretty convinced that the X-Verse needs a good cleaning out. Why does Legion, with a relatively clean history, keep getting rebooted, while X-Men, with a freaking universe of alternate histories and futures, a timeline stretching back to WWII that is becoming increasingly untenable, and more false deaths than a bad soap opera keep slouching towards Babylon? Yeah yeah, read Ultimate X-Men, but I will NOT! As much as I bitch about DC, at least they're not subjecting me to 14 mediocre books about the same 20 characters that don't even make sense when put together.

It's my own fault. I kept buying every miniseries, solo title, and crossover in the early 90s. If only I'd known I was helping to create a monster...

That being said, Astonishing makes me happy in a way that hasn't been since the debut of the second X-Men. Why has no one since Claremont been able to write Kitty?

I liked Alan Davis' Kitty during his stint of writing and drawing Excalibur -those are some of my favorite books of all time.

To have Davis and Claremont working with Nightcrawler and Storm is pure heaven to me. Uncanny and Astonishing are just the top of the list on X-books, especially after I dropped every X-book and said I would never buy them again when Larroca was forcibly taken off of Extreme to work on the ridiculous SubMariner.

Regular X-Men has a crazy Golgotha storyline and none of the characters really appeal to me except Polaris.

I Love Whedon's work on Astonishing -not surprising as Buffy is my favorite show of all time- and I love his take on all the characters. Though I do have to admit that I'm tired of seeing Wolverine in every book and now Emma is getting that way also. Leave them in Astonishing. The fact that Wolverine is on almost every cover is particularly annoying to me.

Kitty's great-- but I wanna see more Colossus. And Beast.

Any one have a theory about the 'mystery voice' that's been talking to Emma?

The first six issues were terrific; issues since have been very good, but not quite hitting the mark their predecessors set.

I'm looking forward to the next arcs-- maybe the conclusion will improve my opinion of the current one.

The dynamic between Kitty and Emma is one of my favorite points of this book. I could tell that would be the case in the first issue when Kitty made the comment about being late because she was getting completely dressed. Plus, Kitty makes Emma act kind of like a brat, so...

Posted by Jorg-EM on :

armsfalloffboy, i agree the X-verse has gotten very confusing over the years...and somehow the it keeps moving on. I've noticed lots of younger fans (children of the 90's) are huge fans of later characters like Psylocke, Bishop, Rogue, Gambit, etc.

I've looked at the "X-model" and I like it for one reason. No reboots back to the original X-Men, or Claremont's classic X-Men,etc. I hate when a title goes backwards b/c some writer think the original stuff to be the best or most original, etc. When things get quietly wiped out so everything is like it was.

The X-Men as muddled as their history/continuity is they build on what came before. Jean is dead. Emma is looking great by Whedon. So is Kitty. Now fans will look to these women as their favorites. New characters become popular...that's nice.

Posted by armsfalloffboy on :

If there is one criticism of Astonishing, it's that sometimes not a whole lot seems to happen in an issue--lots of big pictures. I thought the last one (10?) was a little thin. Good stuff, though. How are Peter and Kitty going to survive being shish-kebabed?

Just a question I've had mulling around my head:

Does anybody feel the fallout from HOUSE OF MEH and DECIMATION in any way lessens Whedon's first arc?

I mean, how are we supposed be concerned with "Hope" when SW can wake up, cross her eyes and wipe out 90% of the mutants on Earth?

Whedon pulled me back in with his writing, but Marvel seems bound and determined to drive me away with their "events". Fooey.

No, it's not. He signed on to do another twelve issue run. It's going to start again in... I want to say January but it may be February or March. 2006 for sure, though.

I think this is partially due to HoM, partially because they had some deadline issues with the first twelve and partly other commitments.

But, long story short, it will return in 2006. Mark your calendars... [Wink]

If the rumors are true, Kitty will be in New Excalibur (and back with Pete Wisdom) and Illyana will be filling her place in Astonishing X-Men.

We'll just have to wait and see, though. As for the team itself... I have no idea if they'll be appearing in other books or not. Emma's been in adjectiveless for the past few arcs and both Emma and Cyke have reccuring roles in New X-Men - Academy X. [shrug] I guess we'll see...

ASTONISHING X-MEN #13

I liked this-- though the subplots are a bit hard to pick up after all this time. Ah, well- there were some very nice COLOSSUS/KITTY scenes... and a hint of some strangeness ahead for THE BEAST. Those are the three characters I care about in this title.

I don't really believe Emma's a "real" Hellfire Club stalwart again. Either she's there against her will, or she's faking- on some level.

But holy crap, what a shocker of a last page! [Elastic Lad]

Could it be Mastermind? I remember when Jean Grey/Phoenix really zapped it to him when he tried messing with her emotions...

I reeeeeeeally liked this issue. A lot, a lot, a lot. For a few reasons.

First of all, Kitty and Piotr are finally validated! They've danced around each other and their relationship status has been in limbo for, God... I don't want to think about how long. It's, like, finally real and undeniable. And that makes me happy. [Big Grin]

Also, I really enjoyed the explanation for WHY EMMA BECAME AN X-MAN. As some of you might've noticed, I'm not exactly what you would call a Morrison fan (though I did enjoy his JLA). But, of the things he did, what especially pissed me off was Emma becoming an X-Man. It's so... not who she was by any stretch of the imagination. Teacher, yes. But hero in a very upfront and in-your-face way? Not so much. Oh!! And the thing with her secondary mutation was particularly interesting as well.

Additionally, I really liked seeing Logan torturing, er, instructing the students. And the scene with Hank and Scott was just... awesome. [Smile] Of the original five, I really like that those two are still shown as friends who just... understand each other. I wish they'd do that more with Bobby instead of constantly character assassinating him.

As for the last page. Ew. Ew, ew, ew, ew, EW!! Sooooo gross. Like, damn. That was the thing I hated most about Morrison's run for sure. >< Plus the art was kinda freaky/weird and I'm more than a little disturbed. Yeeeeah...

So Peter is finally over that Zsaji chick he was mooning over during that SECRET WARS mini-series? About time, too! [Yes] [Smile]

Hah! Pete's been over her for a looong time. I think he dated Callisto after that, actually. >< {I can't remember if it was before or after.} But I know Petey had a thing for Rogue about 80 issues ago or so, was kinda insane for a while before that, and then there was that whole dying thing...

...yeah.

I know!! Scary!!!! [Eek!] (What an ironic graemlin...)

It was after the Siege Perillous (I can't spell) thingy. Petey had no memory and was an artist, I think... >.> I don't really care to delve deeper. [Disgusting]

As for Rogue (aside: what's her real name?) - I know she can't help herself, but she could kill the relationship even after she gets to first base... [Shudder]

Posted by Caliente on :

Well, they found out that Rogue could touch Piotr when he was in metal form (yes, chucking continuity out the door, but whatever), so... yeah. She didn't really like him back, though, he was more infatuated with her. (I think she was with Gambit as per the usual.) It never amounted to anything, though, and he killed himself about a year and a half later.

Oh, and her name's Anna Raven. No, I don't like it either.

Posted by legionadventureman on :

You know, that sounds too similar to Mystique's alias (Raven Darkholme) to be just a coincidence...

Posted by Caliente on :

It's not, Mystique did raise Rogue. Anyway, it was just another dumb thing that came out of Claremont's X-Treme run. Personally, I'm not a fan, but... [shrug] What're you gonna do?

Posted by legionadventureman on :

Possibly do a ZERO HOUR and retcon the entire X-MAN run - and start again from scratch?

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Following Piotr's break-up with Kitty in the Mid-80's, he had a brief thing with Callisto after losing his powers/memories in the Siege Perilous storyline and Callisto having her face transformed by Masque so she looked like a human. Thus, I don't think Peter knew who she was. He was just an artist in Manhattan then. When the Shadow King reverted him to Colossus, that relationship (if indeed, it was) was never mentioned ever again.

Petey had some back and forth with Kitty over the course of the 90's in Excalibur, but nothing really came of it. He spent many years with the Acolytes so we never saw him.

The Rogue thing occurred when Claremont had his return (which was dreadful) and was mentioned like five times though never really ever shown. When he died, it was forgotten and has never been mentioned since--a good thing, b/c as Cali said, it threw continuity out the window and didn't work.

I'm loving the return of Astonishing X-Men. I can't for the life of me see how anyone could think the other two X-books could compete with this one. It's in a whole other league.

I saw this book at the local Borders and laughed out loud at Wolverines comment to them. The whole page just struck me as funny.

ASTONISHING X-MEN #15

Whedon's really dragging out the is-she-or-isn't-she aspect of the Emma storyline, isn't he? I'm ready for a big reveal, after the build-up. Colossus should've known about Shaw's power, shouldn't he? That rang a little hollow, for me. The Beast/Wolverine scenes were funny-- with Hank reduced to savage animalism and Wolverine mentally de-aged to a little boy. Cute. Kitty's the dependable shoulders upon which the story's solution is clearly going to hinge.

A good read, but very much a middle-issue.

Posted by Monkey Eater Lad on :

Loved the parallel with the first Hellfire Club story, and Kitty as bad ass is a nice contrast with her first apearances as the newbie. Colossus got his metal bum handed to him the last time be Shaw, but I guess the idea here was that Shaw pushed too many of Colossus' buttons. Was Emma playing tricks on Cyclops or do you think he really doesn't need his visor anymore?

Sorry if some of the dates in this thread are out of order but I combined four separate Astonishing threads into this one.

And the reason for all this work? According to Warren Ellis' post today to his e-mail group it appears he and Simone Bianchi are taking over the title. Haven't seen this news yet anywhere else so I don't know if the announcement is official yet. But this may be the one thing that'll keep me getting the title after Whedon leaves.

I'd say it's official--

Thought I'd point that out.

Yeah and Bianchi said he has yet to see a script. I get the feeling it's just a promo sketch to show his drawing chops.

But, ahhh! I'm so excited. [Big Grin] I dunno how the book itself will be, but I love Ellis and (most of) his stuff. Woo!

Wow, this thread has been lost for a while eh? As usual, it's been a while between issues. Don't really know when the next one comes out but that's the thing with the quality books, they're rarely on time. And I would assume this might be the climax issue

.I love Whedon as a writer, I hope he keeps doing comics after his X-Men run is over (Besides Buffy et al.). Imagine: Whedon and Cassidy on Legion, now that would really trip my trigger!

So as to the above rumor. Has there been any more new info on Ellis writing this title? I Googled a little but didn't find much. I'm an Ellis fan and it would keep me reading an x-title. If not for Morrison and now Whedon, I wouldn't have picked one up since the 80's.

Hey, it's so late they've given up on waiting and just blown the ending in Uncanny X-Men. No wonder it's not getting talked about.

I don't follow UXM, and I wait for the trades with AXM. Is it true that...

Click Here For A Spoiler...Kitty is dead??

Posted by Reboot on :

Yes.

And either Cyclops is a Skrull, or Brubaker's never even heard of a lengthy run of X-Factor.

Posted by Language Arts Lad on :

My first reaction to this:

Click Here For A Spoiler...Kitty is dead??

was that if it was true, and it was a lasting truth, then I'll never have to pick up another issue of any Xmen comic ever again.

Than I remembered that, except for John Proudstar, when it comes to death there are no lasting truths with the Xmen. It all stared with Professor X back in the late '60's.

She'll be back.

Whedon's entire run has been underwhelming since #6, and this is just plain lame.

Posted by Chemical King on :

Exactly my opinion, CoKi - the Danger Room becoming an entity was so ridiculous, i just couldn't get why Comic press like Wizard still celebrated that book. The whole idea was so lame...

Death in X-Men was always a two-sided sword. Some of the best issues I remember dealt with the death of a character, like Ilyana dying way back. By bringing them all back, they devaluate their books from the beginning. If XXX ist dead, the book can never have the same effect it had in the 70s or 80s cause everybody today knows that some wirter will bring him or her back somewhen in the future... so why bother?

I'm a huge Buffy fan, and I gotta say, the idea of Whedon writing the Legion makes my blood run cold.

He *loves* killing off popular characters (and has specifically admitted to killing off certain characters *because* they were popular and it would be effective), and he has the most amazing talent I've seen to construct a heroic complicated fascinating character and then, like a child ripping wings off of a fly, tear them down into an unlikable, unheroic, depressed and lifeless shell of their former selves.

I'd hate to see him get his hands on the Legion and turn Garth into a wife-beating alcoholic, Imra into a weak-willed co-dependent wringing her hands in helpless wide-eyed despair and Cos into a power-tripping megalomaniac out to bend the universe to his will, who ends up having to be killed to save the planet.

Joss is okay for about a year, sometimes two. Then he gets bored and starts breaking shit. He needs to be regularly pushed on to new projects, lest he start tearing up the sandbox and throwing toys everywhere in a fit.

This may sound wicked insulting, and it's not really meant to. He's got an amazing gift for creating compelling stuff. He's also got a penchant for tearing it all apart if he's stuck in one place too long, and it's best for any sort of franchise that he only gets to visit, and not stick around past that date when he loses interest and starts getting the Calvin look in his eyes...

I know there are many Whedon fans on this board, but I have to say that to date, nothing he's ever done has impressed me that much. Then again, my Buffy and Angel viewing has been extremely spotty at best, but I have read most of his comic books--and been left wondering what everyone has been talking about.

The one exception: Astonishing X-Men #1-6, which had probably the best X-scene in the last twenty years.

I feel exactly the same way. The art is gorgeous but after Colossus returned, the stories have been awful.

Danger is the worst part of it. The Danger Room has been alive before. I can't believe Danger got an action figure AND a bust!! The whole Danger Room coming alive was dreadful.

The Hellfire Club storyline was a major let-down also.

While I will miss the art, especially Emma, I am glad there will be a new writer.

Even having heard the rumors about it, and even knowing about all the dead mutants who have come back to life, I'm still shocked and outraged about this character's death.

I agree that the first AXM arc totally outshines the second and third. I was hoping that the fourth arc would turn out to be more to my liking, with all the space opera elements, but the fate of this character is going to be a grain of sand when I read the trade.

Fabian Nicieza did that to Namorita during the second half of his New Warriors run; he's another talented writer who's generally better in the short term (IMO, he should have left New Warriors after # 25 and left X-Men after X-Cutioner's Song.)

Seasons two and three of Buffy are probably the best television I've seen, ever. (Seasons six and seven are painfully bad, by comparison.) Firefly was pretty interesting. Angel was an acquired taste, I guess, and it never quite grabbed me until season four, and even then, only briefly.

Toy Story was a hoot. Other than Astonishing, I haven't read much of Joss' comic work.

Based on his last years of work on Buffy, I *dreaded* Astonishing, but he really did a much better job than I'd expected.

The whole Hellfire Club non-story was awful 'though. The end of that arc made me feel like a John who'd been left pantsless by the hooker who stole his wallet without giving up any sweet, sweet lovin.' Robbed. Frustrated. And a bit chilly.

Maybe it's just that Whedon so damn good at dialog. Something that many comic writers just aren't that good at, but Whedon's dialog while snarky and perhaps a bit contrived, comes off as fresh and believable.

I never followed Buffy religiously or Angel for that matter and found the dialog a little too snappy at times but maybe it's just because I kind of hate vampire stuff. However I didn't feel that way about Firefly at all and I could re-watch it over and over again, no problem.

I must admit, I was not incredibly thrilled with the whole Danger thing although it WAS something that hadn't been done in X-comics before which is a feat in and of itself, what with something like a million different titles (which all seem to have to have Wolverine in them).

I have been enjoying the Breakworld storyline for the most part, although it has drug on for way too long. I just read that it concludes in Giant-Sized Astonishing X-Men #1. ...in May...

I love Kitty and if he kills her, I'll be sad but c'est la morte. Some other writer will just resurrect her at some point I'm sure. It is comics y'know. And Marvel comics in particular seem to thrive on resurrected characters -although DC certainly has their fair share as well.
