Not many by my count! Although there are some that could have possibly been Big-Gun JLAers before they started letting *anyone* in [Wink] :

Dr. Light: with that power, and a strong female (and a strong minority character to boot!)
Blue Beetle: see the old Charltons issues for why!

However, I'd rather not see in the JLA:

Captain Marvel: (already enough Superman/WW/Martain Manhunters there)
the New Gods

Iffy on:

Captain Atom: Charleton's Superman, and really powerful. But that would mean no Firestorm (since they essentially have the same powers), so I'd rather have Ronnie.

Vixen could have been a huge female for DC!

The DC Implosion took care of that, though.

I'd rather not see Captain Marvel in the JLA right now, either, but I think he's one of the few that really fit the iconic nature of the team. Not that "iconic" is the direction they're taking these days.

If by "fit-in" you mean stature in the DCU and experience as a hero, I'd go with Mr Miracle. I can't think of any others at the moment...

Both that or a character that could easily make the transition to the Iconic JLA in the same way Enlonganated Man, Firestorm, Red Tornado and Zatanna did. It's vague I know, but I think you get my drift...

In other words, I don't see Booster Gold, Rocket Red or Fire doing it, but I can see Dr. Light easily being established as a DCU big gun alongside the rest of the JLA.

POWER GIRL but I see her as more JSA now.

I can see the potential for it, but her tenure hasn't assured her that spot, imo. I'd certainly like to see it happen though since there aren't enough women who have been elevated to that stature -- just Wonder Woman, Black Canary and Zatanna imo. Maybe this is something the new Supergirl can do (since I don't feel a need for her to be connected to the Legion mythos at this point).

With the popularity of the Birds of Prey, I would think Huntress and Oracle should be right up there.

With Flamebird's appearance in "Identity Crisis", it makes me wonder if she'd fit. I don't know much about her though -- powers, personality etc... Would she fit in with the big guys?

Starfire looked good mingling with these guys in "Cosmic Odyssey", but there's no getting over her association with the Titans.

Looking at the cover of "Avengers/JLA #3" I don't see any other post satellite era JLA members that totally fit with the icons ... Captain Atom maybe...

Drake, do you mean FireHawk (the girl on patrol with Ralph)?

As Firestorm's girlfriend, I thought she was a pretty cool character and addition to the DCU (before a virtual eruption of crappy characters in late 80's/almost entire 90's). I see her fitting in with the satellite JLA, although she suffers the 'girl Firestorm' stigma that makes Batgirl and even Supergirl shine less that they ought to.

Something else that occured to me: I definately see Adam Strange as fitting in with the icons, but I've always thought of him as one himself. I wonder if other people lump him in with the Icon JLA like that, considering his long Silver Age history and history with the JLA.

Capt. Comet would be my first choice.

Oops - guess Calculator's not the only one confused by the similar names.

I don't see Adam Strange as fitting with the JLA icons just cuz he's got his own mythos and niche. He definitely stands next to them as a frequent ally like the Phantom Stranger, but not as one of their lineup, imo.

I think you just summed up how I feel about Adam nicely Drake! He and the Phantom Stranger are similar in their relationship to the League, although totally different from one another.

Captain Comet is a good one though! Nice call Dev! I could see this.

For me, he has the raw power and presence to hang with them. L.E.G.I.O.N. cemented this with me.

I don't see why Oracle isn't still with the League.

I also think that Red Rocket would have fitted in better if they hadn't done that whole Manhunter infiltration thing.

Posted by DrakeB3003 on :

I think the problem with Rocket Red is that he was just one of a bunch of guys chosen to wear the armor that Kilowog developed for Russia. Unlike Iron Man, he had no advanced technological knowledge (the armor also looked pretty weak -- even the Apokoliptian one). Dmitri was a working class guy who got a good job to provide for his family - he was heroic, but not iconic, imo.

i 'll vote for Maxima she had the power and the attitude to be on par with the icons in the JLA. that is before they made her evil again then killed her off in OWAW.

Ah, respect for the Blakester. How can I not agree?

I wouldn't have him there at the same time as J'Onn, though. They're a little too similar power-wise.

I always thought Halo and Firehawk would have been cool League additions!

This is a fascinating thread.

I agree about Maxima (I miss her), Captain Comet, and Kimiyo Hoshi.

I'll throw in my own $0.02, which may surprise people: Fire & Ice.

Now, yes, I have said many times that I'm not a fan of the Funny Justice League(s), but thanks to Peter David's x-cellent X-Factor, I've come to appreciate the GENERAL IDEA of a semi-comedic super-hero team book; it's just that PAD's sense of humor clicks with me* and Giffen/DeMatteis/Jones's sense of humor does not. Fire & Ice may have been the poster girls of a certain era for better or worse (from what little I've read, I get the impression that they weren't written with much depth, with Fire being a bit of a hussy and Ice being a bit naive) but I think that with a writer like PAD, who can write three-dimensional super-heroines, they could really shine the same way that the super-heroines of X-Factor shine.

Of course, there are some major obstacles at the moment, from a rigidly traditional JLA roster in its current incarnation to PAD's exclusive contract with Marvel to Fire's unfortunate retcon into a trained government asassin. But this is super-hero comics, where anything can be undone in the blink of an eye, and there's no less of a possibility that, in the future, we might get to see what I've proposed.

*BTW, didn't Peter David write a couple stories for JLQ and/or JLTF? I might search for those. I do have his Secret Origins story for the Post-Crisis JLA founders, and I love it.

Captain Comet is at the top of my list. I've liked him since Secret Society of Super-Villains.

Great question and thread! Everybody has good points.

There are many characters that I think fit in the JLA much better than they did before. Or characters who over the years have developed as a great JLA member.

Vixen and Blue Beetle come to mind. ICONS? Not really but they certainly have the potential over others.

ICONS? Not many. My opinion? Captain Marvel and Dr. Fate though I think both characters fit in better with the JSA.

Zauriel, Ray, Mr. Miracle and Captain Atom come to mind. Firestorm like Vixen and Blue Beetle have the potential as well.

I'd like to see the Ray among the icons.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

I see the current Ray has being one of the very few introduced post-Crisis that would fit. Possibly the only one.

Definite yes to Captain Comet. As I said before, yes to Dr. Light, Blue Beetle (Ted Kord) and Oracle.

I like Dr. Fate in the JLA, I do not like Captain Marvel there. Plastic Man either, and he's certainly 'iconic'.

I also disagree with over 70% of my fellow posters here on a variety of characters [Big Grin] . All good characters in their own right, and like the Creeper, Challengers of the Unknown or Deadman, could carry their own title and even be super-stars. But they don't fit in with the Satellite JLA as part of their 'icon' era.

This is a question I originally posed, but couldn't quite put into words. The best I can do now is a baseball analogy. The character needs those 'intangibles' to fit in with that era JLA.
