So what's turning you on in 2004 so far?

Mine, in no particular order:

INHUMANS -- Only 3 issues left, so my top 5 will have an open slot soon. Still digging this book, see the "Why you should read the INHUMANS" thread floating around here for why.

TEEN TITANS -- Yep, good stuff, and McKone's art has gotten SO hot! So much happening in this title, it's unbelievable!

OUTSIDERS -- YOU heard me. Not reading this? MAN are you missing out on a LOT of fun!!

SUPREME POWER -- This book can do no wrong storywise or artwise. Warning: Not for the impatient or fans of "Wham! Bam!" action.

JSA -- 'Black Reign' and Geoff's SHAMELESS fanboy pandering catapults this title back into my top 5. Fury's back! Lyta, I've missed you so! I swear, if Geoff were gay, I'd track him down and **** his **** out of sheer gratitude!

FALLING OUT OF THE TOP 5

X-STATIX -- I'm wondering if the title needs a bit of an overhaul. Just a little one. I'm probably going to get that, since the last arc killed off so many members. Yep, new blood needed.

THE LEGION -- I'm just not "feeling" it lately.

CONTENDERS FOR THE TOP 5

BIRDS OF PREY -- Bless Gail Simone & Ed Benes! This title is so HOT it's on fire!!!

JLA -- Depending on Claremont & Byrne's upcoming arc that is rumoured to be a springboard for Byrne's rumoured new DOOM PATROL series...

Great topic Lash! Here's mine:

Daredevil- Marvel's best comic IMO, better than even Supreme Power and Amazing Spider-man, which I love.

JSA- this title is just so much fun to read, that I can't get enough of it.

Flash- this is DC's flagship and best Super-hero comic right now IMO, I love what Geoff has done with the Rogues, Wally's supporting cast and the city of Keystone itself. Despite the 'darkness' of the last few issues, I eagerly await for the next few stories.

Supreme Power- see Lash's post. And excellent comic, I can't get enough of it.

The Human Target- yes, it's that good. Holey Moley, I was blown away by the first three issues! I can't believe that this title hasn't gotten any press lately, it's so damn good!

Other Top Contenders:

Negation- read it. Best sci-fi title on the market.

Fables-lots of fun, but very intense and with great and 'kewl' characterization.

Amazing Spider-man- the best this title has been in YEARS. MJ, Aunt May and Peter are written so good, that I can't get enough. I really feel like I'm ten years old reading this and loving it.

Superman/Batman- Great characterization of Bats and Supes, and a lot of fun to read too. Although the ending of the last arc wasn't to everyone's taste, the title is still a head above most of the competition.

Catwoman- consistently one of the best comics since the relauch. Great art, great dialogue, characterization and stories. Selena and her supporting cast are incredible.

Gotham Knights- the best crime/cop comic/series that I've ever read or watched. Excellent characterization and stories, each issue is gripping and powerful. I mean it. This is the most under-rated comic on the market, even if it's part of the Bat-family.

BoP- like Lash said, so hot it's on fire. Possibly the best art in any comic right now (including Lee and Perez), with fun characterization and extremely likeable characters, especially the Huntress and Shiva.

*the Legion is pretty good right now, but it really just can't compare to any of these IMO. These are the cream of the crop in the industry right now, at least out of what I'm reading.*

The 5 books I want to read as soon as I get them (alphabetical order):

Fables
Love Fights
Queen & Country
Rex Mundi
Sleeper

I would add Legion, but I've usually read the spoilers before the comic arrives.

Others would be contenders, if not on the list, if they came out more frequently: A Distant Soil, Strangehaven and the Strangers in Paradise trades.

You guys are keeping me busy. I've downloaded the entire runs of Alias, Lucifer, Wildcats Version 3.0, Fables and New Mutants so far this weekend. I've also grabbed all of Planetary (and read it), Batman: The Long Halloween, Authority V.1, Powers, and The Outsiders in the last week. Counting my Legion books I've got over 30 gigs of comics saved up now. Major reading building up on paper and electronically.

#1 Supreme Power
Powers
Hellboy (whenever stuff comes out)
JSA
The Legion

I keep hearing good stuff from you guys about WILDGUARD.

How many issues is it so far? Is it a limited deal? A team or solo book?
I remember hearing great stuff about NEGATION ages ago but am hesitant to get involved with/start loving an independent title that will surely fade away... (I'm still smarting from INNOVATION's implosion that took away HERO ALLIANCE, the best independent team book ever!!)

My top 5

JSA - Johns continues to provide excellent stories. I have to admit, this is the title he excels on (Titans too). Lyta's back but have we lost Rick? I'm very excited about the story potential right now.

HERO - This book continues to be excellent. If you havent read it, you should.

Teen Titans - Another book that Johns has hit his stride on. I was concerned about the roster when it was first announced, but so far I'm impressed. Just wish Lilith and Donna were around.

Surpreme Power - others have said it better than I.

Superman/Batman - I'm really surprised at how much I enjoy this. The story arcs really seem to mean something and arent just fluff.

Others:
Legion: It's OK right now, but I agree with Lash. I'm not feeling it right now.

Avengers: This book hasnt excited me since Busiek left. Hopefully that will change soon. I hear big changes are coming...

Fallen ANgel - This book provides a solid read. But it's not one I highly anticipate.

Hawkeye - THis is another solid read from Nicieza. Very strong start.

Rose & Thorn - Great psychological drama!

The rest of the stuff I buy is just kinda "there" right now. Many are going through transitions:

Flash _ Howard Porter is coming aboard - Hopefully, I will start enjoying this again. I really didn't care for the post Zoom issues that we have seen so far.

Green Lantern - i will be picking up for Marz's new arc.

Hawkman - Another title undergoing a new creative team - Right now, Im taking a wait and see approach.

JLA - I'm looking forward to the Byrne/Claremont arc. After that, I'm not sure. JLA has been pretty spotty lately.

Outsiders - This is a book that I don't want to like. I have to admit, I don't care for any of the NEW characters. However, the writing is good and that alone hascaused me to sporadically pick up an issue here and there.

Wonder WOman - eh...

The Pulse - The first issue was good. Let's see if it continues...

New Titles Im about to start picking up.
The Superman relaunch I will try this.

Alpha Flight - ditto. Although it doesn't sound all that promising.

XMen Reload - I will pick this up just to see who ends up where. Then we will see.

Erm. I don't buy that many, and when I first saw this thread I forgot all about what I'm reading - which is perhaps a sign I'm wasting my money. Yikes! Anyway, some comics I like are:

Legion

Gotham Central (brilliant writing and art)

Catwoman (my favourite title until Paul Gulacy took over the art and made it all t and a. Grrr.)

Hero (nice and offbeat, it does its own thing which is cool...)

The Pulse (early days - its just been one issue - but I'm intrigued with the possibilities of this)

(Rose and Thorn is a good possibility for the top 5 too, I'm loving how Gail Simone is portraying the whole split personality thing...)

The numbers only indicate the titles as they come to me; ranking them would change from month-to-month.

1. JSA-- I thought the plot twists in BLACK REIGN were brilliant... one of the few times I've actually enjoyed weekly installments of a series (usually, they come across as rushed and/or padded). I was sorry to see the new Eclipso killed (if he really was...) and I don't like Al as a Black Adam flunky...

... but boy, did the reveal of what was inside Brainwave's head surprise and delight me! I hope that leads to more story as the series progresses.

2. FLASH: Now that Wally knows that he's Flash again, I'm enjoying this series. I felt distanced from the characters and story during the last few issues, but that distance is gone, now. What's coming up seems interesting.

3. LEGION: I wouldn't let a slightly stale ending to a 6-parter deflate my interest. The beginning of FOUNDATIONS was delightful-- I'm hoping for a return to form before complete creative flip-flops. I'm somewhat worried about the lack of an (announced, official) ongoing team, as I think multiple creative teams could wreck the book without strong editorial control.

4. UNCANNY X-MEN: A guilty pleasure, and believe me, I know lots of folk despise Chuck Austen, and have hated recent plots... but I really like the characters making up the current cast (well, the mutant cast, at least), even with sometimes lackluster writing. I wish this group could stay intact during the upcoming team shuffle, no matter who the creators are.

5. WONDER WOMAN: I *like* Rucka's take on the gods of Olympus. They wore chitons/tunics during Greek times-- why wouldn't they change their dress as time passes? The fact that they didn't change styles in other eras is more unbelievable than them now wearing suits, leather jackets and turtlenecks.

Still, Wonder Woman as preacher isn't the most exciting vehicle for the character.

A couple of other comics I love that don't come out frequently enough to make any 'favorite' lists are AGE OF BRONZE and A DISTANT SOIL. Beautiful black and white art and detailed storytelling in each book. If only some creator would write/draw a comic about Alexander the Great and one about a young Julis Caesar with the same focus and passion Eric Shanower invests in AGE OF BRONZE, I'd be in historical fiction-lover's heaven. And Colleen Doran's DISTANT SOIL is wonderful combination of space opera and fantasy-- a tricky combo that always trips my trigger when done well.

Some CUSP-RIDERS:

TITANS and OUTSIDERS: good writing in each, but I STILL can't forgive the deaths of Donna Troy and Lilith. I'm not sure if Jericho should be added to that list, so I'm leery of TITANS, a bit.

But I can't deny they're energetic, fun reads that seem to mostly respect (jury's still out on Jericho) the chararacters in the respective titles (except for the Tattooed Man and the Brotherhood of Evil-- what's up with that, Judd Winick?)

NEGATION-- I loved this title, but somehow missed picking up the last couple of issues, so I'm out of the loop. I HOPE it doesn't go the way of other Crossgen titles, as it really is a good match for Legion fans-- the series began with several characters that seemed to me to be homages to various Legionnaires.

INHUMANS-- I think completely dropping the royal family from the ongoing story helped sink this ship. The kids should've maintained the focus, but the 'old' characters shouldn't have been ignored. Perhaps there weren't enough 'super hero' trappings? Each issue was a joy, though-- the overall trend seemed a bit lacking.

EYE ON: AVENGERS, GREEN LANTERN, NIGHTWING all could jump to the top 5 at any time, since they have characters I like. Looking forward to ALPHA FLIGHT, the X-'reload' and the JLA creative changes.

Lash, Wildguard is one of the best series I have read in a long long time it was a mini and I can't wait to see how it ends Definetly worth picking up if you can find it!!!!

JSA - "Black Reign" has put it back on top.

Gotham Central - Best Bat-book on the stands.

Fables - I've run out of adjectives to describe how great this is.

Rex Mundi - great alternate history drama/mystery stuff.

Outsiders - I like the portrayal of Nightwing here better than in his own book.

In no particular order:

The Outsiders. Stock superheroing with some great dialogue, characters, and art. Bonus points for using the DC Universe's past without becoming its bitch.

Fallen Angel. Love love love. I love the new universe Peter David has created here. I love the hints. I love the art.

Birds of Prey. Read Outsiders recaplet.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Lotsa interesting stuff going on in this one. Splinter is dead, Mike and Don, both have new jobs, Raph has been bitten by pseudovampires, and Leo and The Foot investigate a man from a dimension where Al Gore is president. Oh, and April finds out the weirdness of her origins, even if the readers don't. Finally, the four page letter column (I know you're jealous) and more Segway madness from Peter Laird.

New X-Men-Waiting for the last TPB. I'm seriously going to miss Morrison, and can't understand what Marvel is trying to do with the reload. And I LIKED Magneto on drugs!

What a great (and totally accurate) review of OUTSIDERS!!

Legion - C'mon, gotta stay loyal to Legion! Even if I don't like a story, I've been able to rely on the art for a few years now...
Runaways - Beautiful art and awesome premise. Dialogue is usually really funny too.
Teen Titans - I never really followed Titans but I'm like the new series a lot.
Ultimate X-Men - Consistently better quality than X-Treme and Uncanny X-Men.
New X-Men - Irregardless of the quality fluxuation, I am eternally an Xwhore, especially to Morrison's run.

Well, I'm only reading three titles, but:

1. New Mutants (soon to be New X-Men) -- great story telling with an excellent mix of old and new characters. The art's been unfotunatley week, but with Randy Green taking over (and Emma Frost and Dust joining the cast) things are reallly looking up for this title.

2. Birds of Prey -- I just started reading this, I'm not sure why I like it yet, but I certainly do. [Smile] I'm not quite as enamoured with the art as others here are, a little to, um, chesty, for my taste, but it doesn't take away from the book.

3. Legion -- It's not that the tilles bad right now, but it feels like it's treading water. The story's just not going anywhere right now. The art's great though and after reading BoP I'm really looking forward to Gail Simone's take on the team.

Legion - as I'm not overly offended by decompressed storytelling and a more modern style of art, Legion has been less annoying for me that it's apparently been for some... [Wink]

Powers - erratic shipping schedules can't disrupt my enjoyment of this title. Even since the fall of Top Ten, there's not been a comic that I really liked that makes good use of the 'super-powered policing' high concept.

Planetary - If absence makes the heart grow fonder, there are a lot of Planetary fans out there who are very very very fond of Planetary. Take a look at a world where pulp fiction meets science fiction meets comic fiction; you won't be disappointed.

Wildcats v3.0 - The superheroics of the boardroom... with a splash of salacious deviousness thrown in for good measure. Wildcats v1 showed superheroes in a war, v2 showed the shellshocked survivors and what they did when they realised the war was over, and v3 takes the conflict to a completely different arena. Any comic that can cripple a gunslinger (Grifter) for over a year and still keep him amazingly interesting is a good book, IMO.

Ultimate Fantastic Four - Again, I don't mind my stories taking a few issues, so I'm finding this comic wonderful. If however, you'd like to see the FF get their powers and blast off on their first mission over a couple of pages, stay very far away. [Wink]

Honourable Mentions to:
B.P.R.D./Hellboy - if it was Mignola's art and shipping a bit more regularly, it'd be definite Top 5 material.
Flash - the return of Howie P! Yay!
Global Frequency - slick, diverse, mind-expanding, classy.
Marvel 1602 - unfortunately coming to an end.
Supreme Power - a slow build that will hopefully avoid the limbo-ish fate of Rising Stars.
Teen Titans - hmmmm. If only there were more YJ influences, and less 80's Titans ones. [Wink]
Ultimate X-Men - always quality, but strangely hollow in recent issues.
Ultimates - pull your finger out, Bryan! [Wink]

Posted by Monkey Eater Lad on :

I forgot to add that NYX is pretty cool, most cause of the art but also cause of the character tied to X-Men Evolution that they revealed in the last issue. Josh Middleton is an awesome artist (I met and talked to him for a bit at San Diego last year) and it'll be said if/when he leaves. Too bad this title has been on the late track.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

For Me:

Flash - Geoff Johns' best work of all his current books.

JLA - Still a favorite. I wouldn't mind a break from the "whole world about to be destroyed" story and get a few character stories.

New Mutants - nice, crisp, clean.

Exiles - Still waiting to see where Austin takes the title characters. I did like the Weapons X story.

Outsiders - Good so far, but I am now wanting some character developement.

It changes all the time, but here's a baker's dozen of the ones I'm enjoying most lately:

Tom Strong
Tom Strong Adventures
Promethea
Smax
Planetary
Astro City
JSA
Hawkman
Teen Titans
Exiles
Supreme Power
Age of Bronze
Reign of the Zodiac

I would probably put Ruse and Sojourn in there as well but I fell way behind on my reading and I have about six months of CrossGen sitting on my dresser waiting to be read.

If I had to take it down to just 5 then I'll go with:

Promethea
Planetary
JSA
Exiles
Astro City

1. The Legion: It's the only series I buy monthly anymore.

2. Ultimate Spider-man: I love this title. If I weren't buying the trades, I would definitely pick this up monthly.

3. Nightwing: I used to buy this monthly, but went to the TPBs a few years back. I don't regret that decision, but it always seems to be a good read when I get around to it.

4. Exiles: Alti-verse meets Quantum Leap in the Marvel universe... What's not to like. I can't think of another "vehicle" that would make me go near an "X" title... that's not entirely true. I pick up the Ultimate X-men because there's a chance that Ultimate Spider-man could make it in there someday, that's how much I like Ultimate Spidey.

5. Batman Family Trades: I like the long sweeping arcs of No Man's Land and Bruce Wayne: Fugitive and the like. I don't like trying to track down all of the titles so I just wait for the trades.

Honorable Mentions:

6. Birds of Prey: Series started out bad for me, just bored me. The latest trade, Of Like Minds, is very good though. Has a chance to rival Nightwing on my list if it sustains it's current excellence.

7. The Clone Wars Trades: Everybody likes Star Wars right?

Note: I used to get Young Justice but heard bad things about Graduation Day so I didn't switch over when YJ got cancelled. With the good buzz about the ongoing, I may pick up the Teen Titans trades if and when they ever get collected.

1. Legion (will always be on my top 5, unless they let Liefeld take some crayons to it).

2. JSA

3. Teen Titans

4. Flash

5. Daredevil

And I have been picking up the Outsiders title, but honestly I haven't been impressed. I guess I'm still nostalgic for the BatO book, with Halo, Katana, GeoForce, Black Lightning and Metamorpho (not the dupe). Guest appearances of these folks just aren't doing it for me.

I just don't care about the new characters at all. And I'm also one of those annoyed with the results (however temporary) of "Graduation Day". What a load of hogwash that was...

Posted by Super Lad Kid on :

My list:

1 - Legion: Even though I have not been impressed with recent stories, it's still the one I look forward to the most every month.

2 - Flash: I am totally digging this series. Wally has become the most relatable character that I have read in a long time.

3 - Wonder Woman: I've just been picking this up since the new team took over. She is probably the least relatable character in comics today, but I'm still being entertained.

4 - Hawkman: Good run by Johns. I'm concerned about the new team, though.

5 - Fables: The only Vertigo book I've ever read on a regular basis. Fantastic characters. Fun all around. Rapidly rising in my rankings.

Honorable mention -

Aquaman - So bad, it's... well it's not much good at all. But it looks like it'll be getting better.

JSA - Black Reign was fantastic. But Johns has to start putting out some quality stories on a regular basis if I'm going to become a regular reader again.

Teen Titans - Sorry, guys. I just don't like it. Too much of the (really whiney and annoying!) kids and not enough of the 80's group (you know, the ones who put the Titans on the top of the charts). We've been seven issues and not much has really happened.

Mines-- as TEEN TITANS is DC's # 2 seller according to the top 100 list, its being traded is likely a sure thing.

Awww, SLK, reread those Titans issues-- not much has happened?

SPOILERS!!!!!

Superboy & Krypto: together again for the first time! The total re-invention of Impulse! The return of Jericho! Deathstroke and the surprise former-Titan-all-new Ravager! Raven: back at last! Starfire kicks Wonder Woman's ass! Wonder Girl's dangerous new lasso! Brother Blood! Oh, and Cyborg & Beast Boy are there too (okay, maybe they need some more attention...!).

There's TONS of stuff going on!

My only gripe is, Grummet's art is nice on his fill-ins, but he doesn't do McKone's version of Superboy justice. Which is odd considering how many years he spent on SUPERBOY.

Parasitic Twin, I see you're reading My Faith In Frankie. I think this book is great myself, I can't wait for the next few issues!

In fact, I totally recommend this book to everyone! The main character, Frankie, is a high-school girl cutie that is very likeable and is stuck between a dilemna of two boys: a deity and her childhood boyfriend brought back from the dead! It's really a cool book and very well-written.

The way it's written reminds me of something that you would like Lash, the character Frankie is very sweet and the type of character that is usually loved by people here on Legion World!

Oh, and it's a four issue mini by Vertigo.

Fables would be in here if IU read the book monthly...but I'm getting the Trades.

I thought it might be fun to update this and see how tastes may have changed.

So here's my current top 5 (not counting minis, but you can if you wanna) in no particular order...

YOUNG AVENGERS ...Marvel's top book for me currently. Totally rolling with that "All-New X-Men/Perez Teen Titans/New Warriors" this book is a HIT vibe. I've loved every issue so far.

HAWKMAN ...the past 6 months or so have seen my favorite Hawk-stories ever. The current storyline with all the old villains and Golden Eagle has been totally aces.

JSA ...rocking the house as usual.

TEEN TITANS ...no changes here either.

LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES ...It's back, baby.

FALLING OUT OF THE TOP 5...

OUTSIDERS ...that horrid 2-part fill-in knocked it right out of the top 5 for me. That mess shouldn't have seen print. Here's hoping next issue sees a rebound.

SUPREME POWER ...How the mighty have fallen. This book is on my list of ones to drop at the slightest provocation.

FLASH ...Geoff's run ens soon.

CONTENDERS FOR THE TOP 5...

SUPERGIRL ...0 & 1 were a LOT of fun!

JSA CLASSIFIEDS ...ditto.

SHE-HULK 2 ...She's back in October, you know.

ULTIMATES 2 ...Almost makes the top 5. Close, close.

Posted by MLLASH on :

And if I WERE counting minis, I'm sure that:

THE DEFENDERS

VILLAINS UNITED

and DAY OF VENGEANCE would be way up there.

Posted by SouthtownKid on :

- Love & Rockets

- Legion

- errm... Hmm. I guess those 2 were the main ones, although I enjoy a lot of other stuff here and there. Those are the two I am completely unable to wait for a TPB of.

The Walking Dead (still #1 on my list)
LSH
Young Avengers
Astonishing X-Men

Hmm. Really can't come up with a fifth one. Those four are about the only continuing titles that aren't on the verge of being dropped for trades or just dropped. If I need a fifth then maybe Batman/Superman, but just barely.

Falling Out of the top 5:
Nightwing - the last 8 months have been awful
Outsiders - what a shame, this used to be one I really looked forward to reading each month
New X-Men - seems to have lost it's way. We'll see what the new team does with it.

Mine would have to be. Still I still rather collect trades these are the ones I'm after:

JSA (My love for the Golden Age Heroes knows no bounds.)
Outsiders (I'm optimistic....)
Teen Titans
Superman/Batman
JLA: CoC

Though I have read two other trades recently that were quite good. Green Arrow: Quiver and DC: New Frontier.

Rex Mundi and Outsiders have dropped off my top 5. I've lost a bit of interest in the former (especially with the artist gone) and the latter's just gone to pot.

I checked my old top five list and FOUR of them have fallen out, although one kinda by default.

Young Avengers What can I say that hasn't already been said? This is Marvel's best comic, and one of those rare comics that just gets it. Like the All-New X-Men, Byrne's FF, and even the Marvel Silver Age, it has an unknown excitement factor that somehow, despite many trying, cannot be bottled.

JSA This comic is the KING. Discounting Flash (due to upcoming changes), JSA has been comics best book for some time, and still is, and I'm confident, still will be for sometime. Top of my read list.

Legion of Super-Heroes I feel like its back. It's sharp and its fun and its the LSH again. Even with another reboot, I'm excited. Like many, I think I'm biased here, but I freely admit it. And I'm loving it.

Captain America Now this is good writing. And amazing art. And some risk-taking story-telling, but done in such a crisp, well-written way, with great characterization and I'm drawn in, despite early reservations.

Hawkman Anyone not reading this is stupid. Action, savagely likeable characters leaving my trying to catch my breath--and I'm loving it.

Honorable mentions
- Birds of Prey
- JLA (current arc, but I need more than a current arc to put it in)
- Daredevil
- All (4) Infinite Crisis minis, but I'm not counting minis (particulurly Villains United and OMAC Project)
- Teen Titans
- Ultimate Fantastic Four (the best of the Ultimate titles, and I enjoy USM and Ultimates)
- Wolverine (Mark Millar's run has been the best Wolverine story I've ever read and the best work by Millar I've ever read--and I'm one of the fans that sick to death of Wolverine).

'Tis a good time to be a DC fan.

Falling out are:
-Flash, but only by default. IMO, Geoff John's Flash has consistently been the *best* comic in the entire industry for a few years now, and it still is right now. But, with it ending, I'll have to wait and see what's next for the title.

-Supreme Power- has become a total letdown. Dragging along, no likeable characters, and I will not be buying any minis related.

- Human Target - cancelled, but to be honest, I wasn't liking this title in the final months nearly as much as I was when it started.

- Daredevil - this is still good, but the final two arcs just haven't felt *great*. But Bendis has had the best DD run since Miller, and I've read the entire run. I do think Brubaker will keep it going. It would be in my Marvel top-five, just not the entire one.

I have some questions if you dont mind...

Is the Astonishing X-Men a continuation of X-Men (vol. 1) or a revamp?

Are the Fantastic Four still together (as a group and as a comic book?)

Klarion the Witch Boy
Villains United
Lucifer
Birds of Prey
Desolation Jones

[Alas, Legion is no longer on this list -- but i'm hoping!]

Okay, as a resident X-Men afficianado (and you all thought I only knew the Flash [Wink] ), I'll field these. The X-Men vol. 1 is currently titled "The Uncanny X-Men" and has been for many years. The X-Men vol. 2, once called "New X-Men" for a short time (Morrison's run) but has returned to it's adjectiveless ways, started in 1991. The Astonishing X-Men vol. 3 (the first was an Age of Apocalypse mini andthe second was a normal continuity mini) was born out of the "X-Treme X-Men" ashes (which was the third X-Book, born in 2001, I think). It's written by Joss Wheaton and was one of the new titles when Marvel did a "Reload" in March '04. Basically, they reorganized the rosters for the X-Teams. There's now a fourth normal continuity X-Book, the New X-Men vol. 2, born of the New Mutants vol. 2 series, which is about the kids at the school. Additionally, there's also the "Ultimate X-Men", which takes place in the infamous "Ultimate" universe. Actually, it's pretty good... except for one or two minor things. And the current artist. I am not a fan.

And that's the short version.

As for the Fantastic Four, yes, they are still a team. A team with three books. They have their series going 530 or so issues strong. Waid came off of the book before starting Legion and his run was phenominal. The regular FF book is a bit campy but still fun. There's also a "Marvel Knights" book called simply "4" and I hear good things but haven't read it simply out of disinterest. And the Fantastic Four too have an Ultimate book (guess what the title is [Wink] ) which has the most amazing art. Greg Land is a God. Seriously, this stuff is even better than his Birds of Prey work.

Uhm, so I think that about covers it!! [Big Grin]

I'm not even sure I still get 5 titles...

1. I completely agree with everyone on JSA. It's not going to take much more for me to call John's run one of the best ever.

2. Astonishing X-Men. I've been reading X-books every month for 16 years, and this is the only one I currently give two shits about. And honestly, more should happen each month.

3. Legion. It's still the book I'm most excited to see.

4. Astro City. Kurt can still throw down.

Sadly, I'm not sure I would bother to put some of the others I get on a "favorites" list. Hawkman? Sometimes great, sometimes underwhelming. Uncanny X-Men? A habit more than a favorite. Tom Strong? I still love the concept, but where's the creator?

I'm spending more time reading TPBs from the library than I am going to the comic store. I've really enjoyed the first fifty issues of Nightwing, Leave it to Chance was great, Y: The Last Man was amazing, I even liked the first part of Bruce Wayne, Fugitive! Maybe I would like comics more if I didn't have to pay for them...

1. Legion - I love this run

2. Ultimate Fantastic Four - it's been spotty but the new story arc is interesting and the art by Greg Land is some of the best I've ever seen.

3. Ultimate X-Men - depending on the story arc and the artist, this can be very good, or mediocre. Right now it's mediocre, but in the past, it's been great. Needs a better artist though

4. Ultimate Iron Man - I'm interested to see where this is going.

5. All Star Batman and Robin

Leaving me bored are

Green Lantern
Doom Patrol
Majestic

2. Fables

3. JSA

4. Teen Titans

5.Wonder Woman

Had to think about # 5 there and it sorta surprised me that she would take the 5th spot, but I have to say that I ahve been enjoying here book alot more then the bat books or even Superman titles.

Of all the IC minis Villians United and DOV have been the best reads. OMAC is great but I have found R/T War somewhat lacking. Ditto on Donna Troy.

Books leaving me 'ehhh'

1. Bat books
2. Superman Books
3. Outsiders
4. Hawkman
5. Green Arrow

Didn't get Supergirl and will wait around for GL.

ONGOING: (no particular order)

YOUNG AVENGERS-- likeable characters surrounded by mystery in well-told stories that make good use of good old-fashioned cliffhangers. Nice art, too. I think Legion fans might have some natural affinity for this title.

JSA-- It's still a treat to see an ongoing title featuring the Alan Scott Green Lantern, Hourman (or men), the Jay Garrick Flash side by side with Sand, Star-girl, Dr. Midnight, Atom-Smasher, etc.

For so long these guys were kept on the back of the shelf... pulled out only for rare appearances, often in crowd scenes.

HAWKMAN... I LOVE the use of the unfamiliar GA Hawkman villains! This has been a real surprise. The return of Golden Eagle is nice, ongoing source of mystery.

BIRDS OF PREY... I like the alteration between guest-stars galore and highly personal scenes. I never cared for the Helena-Huntress, but this title has made me appreciate her. And caused me to like Black Canary and Barbara Gordon even more.

WONDER WOMAN... the mythological element is the draw, for me. I like Rucka's updated Greek gods and am *very* curious to see how they'll progress. And I *love* seeing Hermes back! Hmmm- does Ares new role as Lord of Hades have anything to do with all the resurrected characters that've popped up in the last few months? Is the 'Infinite' crisis one of the afterlife(lives)?

MINISERIES:

VILLAINS UNITED: Loads of fun-- though possibly not for the 'uninitiated' unless that rare being likes figuring things out as they go (is this a dying art?)

RETURN OF DONNA TROY: I know, I know-- but I'm just so glad to get Donna back... and I like the Titans of Myth (except for that name!!)

PURGATORY (rising):

AQUAMAN... there's an energy to the stories now... though there's also a sort of drift that nothing ever really gets resolved. I like the addition of Sub Diego-- though featuring it at the expense of Atlantis doesn't sit too well. And the characters of Koryak and Tempest seem to have switched personalities, somehow. I'm not sure if the writer intends this, or not. I'm a bit concerned for the continued existence of Mera.

JLA... a great storyline going on, but will there even be a JLA in a few months? All's uncertainty.

FLASH... ROGUE's WAR needs to end on a high note... with lots of attention to Wally West and to some of the characters that have fallen to the wayside. I regret that it became ZOOM's WAR the last couple of issues. It makes sense as far as the larger plot goes, but the old Zoom kind of bores me.

RUNAWAYS... something about the series is not quite as good as the first volume, but it's still a fine book and well-worth reading.

PURGATORY (falling):

X-books-- the HOUSE OF M stuff has everything up for grabs. Maybe that mini's last couple of issues will make all the hype worth it, but I'd be surprised. I mostly hope that adjectiveless XMen will continue with the cast mostly intact (though I wouldn't care if Wolvy, the increasingly annoying Emma Frost and Gambit move off to some other title...) and with a renewed sense of purpose and some good old fashioned *stories*.

MARVEL KNIGHTS 4... I am royally ticked off that the solicits indicated that Crystal would be guest-starring in this week's issue... only to find that Emma bloody Frost joins Sue, She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel and Alicia Masters for a night out on the town instead. I liked the issue, and it's campy flashback to a Sue/Black Panther flirtation(!?!)... but really, Emma for Crystal? Gag.

Man, where's the love for the Dead? If I have to get every one of you a copy of the first trade to read this series then I'll have to start saving up. Seriously, if you are not reading The Walking Dead you are missing out on one of the best series in years. Zombies aside there is a depth to the series that most super-hero books lack.

Ahem...I'll promise to read an issue of Walking Dead if you'll do the same with what I believe is one of, if not the, best comics at the moment... Waid & Silvestri's Hunter Killers. Awesome art great story telling, excellence all around.

That's a deal! I actually had placed the first issue of HK on my order list but it was one of the ones dropped when I cut back. I always wait until the last minute to submit my monthly order so I can add or drop books as needed.

I'll look for copies of HK later today.

I take it you're referring to bothregular and limited-run series:
1.Legion (it's the only one I bag AND board after a reading)
2.Red Sonja (only two issues so far, but lots of promise)
3.Uncanny X-Men (not as good as it was, but not about to give it up)
4.Catwoman (spotty, but still enjoyable)
5.Black Widow (waiting for the newest run)

(Hmmmm ... I probably won't be allowed to count GirlGenius since it became a webcomic, even though it will still have TPB collections ... )

1. P.S.238 by Aaron Williams, published by Dork Storm. Lots of interesting stuff going on at the School For MetaProdigies; I just wish it came out more frequently.

2. JSA.

3. Uncle $crooge. Carl Barks. Don Rosa.
... okay, they're not in every issue. But even the issues without Rosa or Barks usually manage to be fun.

4. Legion of Super-Heroes. Has the potential to move up the list.

5. Hawkman. I was really worried about this book when I learned Johns was leaving, but the new creative team has been doing a fine job.

Honorable Mention:
I thought JSA: Classified got off to a terrific start.

Just so you don't think I didn't remember. My comic shop doesn't carry copies of Walking Dead. The only order in those on standing order. I'll have to see if I can track down a copy somewhere so I can live up to my end of the bargain. [Frown]

It's been almost two years since I've been on this thread so I decided to review my current top 5 titles.

1. Still love Ultimate Spider-man

2. Invincible (if you are not reading this book, you owe it to yourself to pick it up) In fact... I like this book so much that I might pick up Kirkman's Zombie title "The Walking Dead" because of all the good things I've heard about it. Me and horror comics don't mix... that's how good Kirkman is on Invincible

3. Still waiting on the next Birds of Prey TPB

4. LSH... what can I say. The title has left me flat since Dream Crime and Foundations, but I'm a loyal kind of purchaser. Still my only monthly get.

5. Still waiting on the next Nightwing TPB

As for my previous titles...

Star Wars Clone Wars finished its run. Decent reading.

Bat Trades... Stopped after the two Hush Volumes. They were great though. Recently picked up Hush Returns and was left entirely flat by the book. So flat that I may not go back and pick up the War Games Volumes.

Exiles... well I hate to say it, but they've found themselves exiled from my reading list. I just stopped caring.

May go back to picking up Ultimate X-Men, but I'm still resisting that notion. Might put them on my gift lists.

That was my post on August 16th, and its actually still the same. I have some slight reservations though: LSH is moving too slow for me and might now really qualify as a Top Fiver. JSA has me worried about post-crisis and Johns leaving. And the loss of Carter Hall to Hawkman could equal the loss of enjoyment for Cobalt Kid…but I’m willing to wait and see on all of these, because I’ve been so impressed so far.

I also don’t include mini-series, or I would put Infinite Crisis as a definite Top Five. Some of the Seven Soldiers stuff is also very good.

Honorable mentions
Birds of Prey
Daredevil – Bendis’ final arc was a return to a level of quality that shows how good he really is.
Ultimate Fantastic Four – Millar’s run right now makes it the best Ultimate title.
Fables
Runaways
Wonder Woman (by Rucka)
Green Lantern
X-Factor

Major Gripe
When this thread started in March 2005, I said (and still feel) that Flash was the best comic out there. Now I miss it terribly. One awful story following Geoff and now a new title…

Oh, and I'll really miss Gotham Central. One of the best comics out there since its inception and never a weak storyline.

1. Birds of Prey. It never sucks.
2. The Ultimates 2. Whenever it comes out, that is.
3. Freshmen. This mini has been quite a bit of fun.
4. LSH. Warts and all.
5. Aquaman. I wanted to list it much higher, but its pacing until these last few months leading up to the OYL revamp made Waid's LSH look like a Michael Bay film. Now, with the new writer coming, Jon Arcudi's made more of interest happen in 3 issues than in the six prior. (Someone tell these writers to stop writing comics like TV shows -- their comics only last 20 minutes and new episodes don't come weekly.)

Up-and-comers: JSA -- I've gradually tracked down nearly the entire series and am much more impressed with it than I was when I'd pick up an issue here and there. It's still hit-or-miss, but I like these characters well enough to want to follow along anyway. Johns' departure is a concern.... Young Avengers -- waiting on the 1st trade to sell me on it. Recent issues look pretty good, but the setup is the make-or-break for me.... X-Factor -- truth be told, this belongs in the top five. But I wanted to give Aquaman a shout out before it slips off into revamp oblivion.... Astro City -- every issue of this title is fine comics. Just not regular enough.

Some changes in mine since last August:

1. The Walking Dead
2. Jonah Hex
3. DC's Showcase Series
4. The Legion of Super-Heroes
5. Captain America

I have to admit the Legion is slipping. And with Warlord and Moon Knight coming up (assuming they are as good as the previews show them to be), the Legion may slip out of my top 5.

FLASH ...Geoff's run ends soon.

CONTENDERS FOR THE TOP 5...

SUPERGIRL ...0 & 1 were a LOT of fun!

JSA CLASSIFIEDS ...ditto.

SHE-HULK 2 ...She's back in October, you know.

ULTIMATES 2 ...Almost makes the top 5. Close, close.

Above were my stats as of last August, not counting minis.

Here's the current stats (no particular order):

YOUNG AVENGERS I *wish* the WaK Legion "felt" like this for me.

SHE-HULK Back with a vengeance, baby.

THE THING It's Slott-tastic!

JSA Still standing!

TEEN TITANS Ditto!

FALLING OUT OF THE TOP 5

HAWKMAN Still enjoyable, but It's golden run had to end at some point; am very curious about the upcoming change to HawkGIRL, though.

LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES I've not felt so blah about the Legion since the worst days of DnA's run.

CONTENDERS FOR THE TOP 5

OUTSIDERS It hasn't made it back to top 5 yet, but very close.

SHADOWPACT I loved the "Day of Vengeance" event so much, and I'm elated about Willingham's return to artwork!

BIRDS OF PREY Is always a good read.

DROPPING THE BALL

JSA CLASSIFIED Loved the Kara/Amanda Conner story; I was less thrilled with the Injustice Society story.

SUPERGIRL Is it still being published?!!?

ULTIMATES 2 Far too irregular shipping.

MINIS OF THE MOMENT

DEFENDERS was a hootenanny!

DAUGHTERS OF THE DRAGON # 1 was brimming with promise.

MARVEL ROMANCE REDUX Cannot *wait* to pick it up.

I (HEART) MARVEL I'll even read the Wolverine, Spider-Man, Daredevil and (insert top-tier Marvel character I could care less about here) stories.

INFINITE CRISIS **THE** comic-book event of the past... well, a LONG time.

X-STATIX: DEAD GIRL Milligan & the Allreds, together again. SWEET!

My current top 5:

1. Young Avengers- is it just me or is there a real Barry Windsor Smith feel to that art?

2. Y-The Last Man- Brian Vaughan is a genius

3. Ex-Machina- see above

4. Ultimate FF- just plain fun

5. LSH- wouldn't have been up here 3 months ago, but I feel like it's starting to come together.

Too irregular but still good: Astonishing X-Men, Ultimates 2, Ultimate Iron Man

It's a whole new year, and possibly a whole new ballgame.

Let's see what comics are currently flipping my switch...

JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA.... *THE* best book out there right now!

TEEN TITANS.... The Johns/Daniel run has been pure excellence!

HEROES FOR HIRE.... This Gray/Palmiotti series off the heels of DAUGHTERS OF THE DRAGON has been a lot of fun, and the current issue (# 6) has been the best yet!

SHE-HULK.... Still hard to beat this for fun and well-written comics.

52.... I think I can pretty much call it an ongoing; It's surpassed my hopes!

FALLING OUT OF THE TOP 5:

YOUNG AVENGERS, how I miss thee (and no, I'm not interested in the YA/Runaways miniseries).

THE THING, cancelled far too soon. Well, things for the memories. *tee hee!*

CONTENDERS FOR THE TOP 5

WELCOME TO TRANQUILITY, if its excellence continues.

SHADOWPACT.... waiting for the one, shining kick-ass moment, but continually pretty good.

Scott recently like got me hooked on the Dead. It's a great drama book, with characters that are very human. Kirkman nails them all.

I can't speak for him, but reading it is like reading LOST at it's best. Our heroes are faced with an unpleasant situation, and there's excitement with every new leg of their adventure. But that pales in comparison with watching them interact with each other.

As for my Top 5 these days...

Fables is fun and gripping and exciting and breezy.

Ultimate X-Men isn't your X-men or my X-men. It's a whole new breed, and they kick butt.

Aquaman is the new adventure comic. It's not Orin, but it's still damn good.

Jonah Hex is reviving the western comic.

S&LOSH I think WnK are really getting into the team now. I expect it to just get better and better.

Those first two I only read in tpb. I came late to the party, so it just seems easier to read them that way (and it's cheaper.)

With Mouse Guard & Secret Six over this is a fairly recent change up in my list.

I don't get that many comics, but I can fill out a top 5 list:

1. Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes. It's my favourite.
2. The All-New Atom. More fun than humans should be allowed to have.
3. Blue Beetle. Straight-ahead superheroics done right.
4. The Spirit. Its quality is obvious but I'm not yet attached to the character.
5. JSA. Oh, it's good and everything, but mostly what's keeping me with it is Starman curiosity.

current Top 5
(1) JSA – I don’t think I’ve seen a stronger start to a relaunch since, hell, the gap in between Action Comics #1 and $2!! (I kid, I kid, I have no idea if such a thing exists). Hands down the ‘must read’ comic right now…

(2) 52 - …unless you’re reading 52. This is the comic I read first each week, and will be until it ends. This is IMO the best thing to come out of all comic book companies since I’ve been reading comics, which means about 1990. If you’re not reading it—ouch, that sucks for you.

(3) Captain America – The only other returning comic from a year ago for me (the other is JSA), Captain America remains the best thing Marvel is putting out there and I would say is actually tied for being possibly the best ongoing comic book in comics. The writing is so strong and so top notch that its like a punch to the gut, and the art is suberb. I’ve never read Cap this good, and I actually have read all the Cap stories in the Golden Age, Tales of Suspense and Avengers.

(4) Daredevil – Again, this is the other great thing Marvel is putting out that shows the House of Ideas is still able to produce comic books that are equally as good, if not better than anything else out in the industry. Probably the best transition from one writer’s long run on a comic to another would be Bendis to Brubaker, as Bendis’s run on Daredevil was IMO the single best piece of work he’s ever done (and I’m by no means a Bendis fan), and Brubaker’s run is actually even better! This is up there with Miller’s two runs, and may actually have surpassed them. About five years ago, I liked Daredevil but didn’t love him—now after these past few years, I can honestly say that Daredevil is one of Marvel’s best characters.

(5) Fables – Its official in my eyes, that Fables has inherited what Preacher inherited from Sandman, and Moore’s Swamp Thing before it. It’s a staggeringly excellent comic book that is filled with amazingly written scenes, dialogue, characters, subtle moments, intense action and great, great drama. Pure genius, pure brilliance.

Falling out of the Top 5
(1) Legion of Super-Heroes – I still enjoy it, but not nearly enough to make it qualify for the Top 5, or Top 10. The stories just aren’t knocking my socks off, and just like the Reboot, I still can’t get used to a different Legion than the REAL one. Seeing Thom in JSA has only made me long even more.

(2) Young Avengers – I’m kinda over this. It was great, but I’m greedy and the wait has taken forever. When it comes out again, that will be great, but in the meantime, meh.

(3) Hawkman – much like Flash the last time I posted to this thread, I’m annoyed as hell at what they did to Hawkman. They basically made one of the absolute stupidest moves ever by taking Carter out and the book has sucked horribly even with just Kendra. Terrible decision—someone should be cuffed across the back of the head like a kid acting up at the airport.

Honorable Mentions
- Green Lantern – Post OYL, Green Lantern and Teen Titans have been consistently excellent, making them must-reads that have me gleefully waiting in anticipation. Green Lantern has been great, and is the first time this comic has been this good since I have been on this planet. I absolutely love it.

- Teen Titans – just like above, OYL, Teen Titans has been mind-blowingly good. I’ve eaten up every issue and loved them. I’d rank this higher than all Titans runs since Perez and even better than Young Justice (which I loved).

- X- Factor – all of the X books are good right now, though not all deserving to be in this elite group. X-Factor, on the other hand, most assuredly does. Absolutely excellent, and I highly recommend it.

There are of course tons of other great comics, but I’d rather not list them all in a “Top 5” post. Both Marvel and DC, and a bunch of independents. I’d rank All-Star Superman, but it doesn’t come out enough to deserve it, even if All-Star Superman #6 is the single best comic book produced since 1986. And really looking forward to reading more of Cooke’s ‘The Spirit’ series in 2007!

Oh, and…’Still mad an entire year later’
The final issues of Flash and the relaunch with Bart. Perhaps the most annoying thing to me personally in years. Flash has SUCKED since Wally left and it’s a decision that never should have been made. No good has come of it, not even 0.01%.

A "top 5" list for me ought to be a simple thing... as I've been buying less and less as the months go by. In no particular order...

1 - JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA -- I'm hoping Geoff Johns has gotten over his "never-ending escalating" plot syndrome. I'd like to see him tell "complete" stories with an ENDING, and a nice gap between stories. Does everything have to be NON-STOP sopa-opera ALL the time? Dale Eaglesham is the 1st "regular" artist on this book (Jerry Ordway doesn't count) to blow Steve Sadowski out of the water. And he draws prettier women! Courtney finally looks like she always should have, and the new girl cracks me up. I admit-- I LIKE "new" characters, sometimes reading the 10,000th appearance of ANYBODY can be wearing...

2 - GREEN LANTERN -- I hope Hal finally gets it thru his head to stop taking STUPID chances (like not wearing his ring in potentially dangerous circumstances). Geoff Johns (HIM again?) performed another miracle when he brought Arisia-- my #1 FAVORITE GL-- back. Wow. Ivan Reis, "doing" Neal Adams' style better than Adams, is doing amazing work. I hope more stories get Hal off-Earth. The planet has too many costumed heroes to make his presence necessary-- or logical.

3 - GREEN LANTERN CORPS -- this has varied with different writers. Patrick Gleason's art is mind-boggling, but sometimes it's a bit difficult to follow the actual stories when the art is TOO "distracting". Dave Gibbons proved he's 10 TIMES better when he's doing the drawing himself. I could go for a lot more issues with him on the art. Guy Gardner is running neck-and-neck with Hal, I think he's being better-written now than ever before.

4 - USAGI YOJIMBO -- Stan Sakai never disappoints! I am very apprehensive about the upcoming "arranged" marriage involving Lady Tomoe-- I like her too much to want to see such a horrible thing befall her, and hope Stan can find a way out of it for her.

5 - BIG BANG PRESENTS -- with its rotating anthology format, you never know what you're gonna get from issue to issue, but that's always been one of the big appeals of this title. Of late, Protoplasman was fun, Super Frankenstein MORE so, the Will Eisner tribute episode of Knight Watchman was downright spooky in its "accuracy", and coming soon, Teen REX, a Jack Kirby KAMANDI tribute. I wish this could come out more regularly, it really deserves bigger sales & a higher profile.

It hit me the other day that far too many books I really have loved over the last few years have disappeared... or only appear on a sporadic basis. SUPER MANGA BLAST, which I only ever bought for CANNON GOD EXAXXION, is no more-- and I am NOT looking forward to "having" to buy EXAXXION collections in a shrunken "digest" format. the art deserves to be seen "full size". STRANGERS IN PARADISE has remained gripping, though often disturbing, and Terry Moore is bringing his epic to a conclusion very soon. There was -- what-- ONE issue of LIBERTY MEADOWS that came out recently, after it'd been MIA for far too long, and rumor has it Frank Cho is too "busy" at Marvel to be able to spend more time on what he really SHOULD be doing.

My faves:

1) 52-- Like Cobie, it's still the first comic I read each week, which definitely says something for it. Not every issue is an A+, but it's been consistently good throughout the run.

2) The Spirit-- It's awesomeness cannot be over-stated. I've like the character since I picked up the first two Archives on a whim awhile back, and this title has put me on a quest to buy the rest of them. And, again, Darwyn Cooke may just be the best to happen to comics since the staple.

3) All-Star Superman-- I wish it came out a little more frequently, but few titles so consistently satisfy when they're there.

4) Jonah Hex-- Brilliant Western Adventure, and consistently interesting every month.

5) Detective-- Again, each issue manages to entertain me. What more can you ask for?

I regularly read and love Jonah Hex and Detective Comics too Eryk--great choices! Every month I'm entertained and walk away pleased with the purchase.

1. Invincible- good indie super-hero book.

2. Ex Machina - that Vaughn guy has some good writing skills. the art isn't bad either.

3. Conan - sword and fantasy

4. LSH- so good, I can't wait till we get action figures.

5. JSA - awesome

1. All-Star Superman. Just the best thing going.
2. Justice Society of America. Fantastic relaunch.
3. Fables. Still bringing it after 50+ issues.
4. Mystery In Space. No points for guessing why.
5. The Spirit. A reinvention that has worked brilliantly so far.

Posted by Arachne on :

1. Justice Society -- I don't need to say any more.
2. newuniversal -- I'm finding this really intriguing and the art's spectacular
3. S&LSH -- It was weak for a few issues but it's really picking up now.
4. Birds of Prey -- ditto
5. Skip Beat -- I wasn't going to add this since it's not a monthly, but I just can't put any other comics I'm reading ahead of it.

I'll agree with Miner on these three, and add:

4. Strangers in Paradise. It's had its ups and downs, but as the series heads for the finish line, it's been quite good.
5. Welcome to Tranquility.

I'm probably forgetting something, but right now those are mine. It's probably the first time since the late 80s that superhero books dominate my top choices.

Wow great minds!

Here is mine:
1. Supergirl & LOSH
2. Birds of Prey
3. JSA
4. All Star Superman
5. X-Factor

Runaways and Checkmate are right up there though.

1. The Walking Dead
2. JSA
3. All-Star Superman
4. 52
5. Supergirl & SLoSH

The Walking Dead hasn't moved and the Legion is barely hanging in there, everything else is new. And that's mostly because I'm just not reading much anymore. Still getting Jonah Hex and a number of others but haven't actually cracked open the issues for quite a while. Really have become bored with comics as a whole lately. If I ever did bite the bullet and stop buying altogether, TWD is probably the only title I'd still collect, most likely in trades.

1. S&LSH
2. JSA
3. Teen Titans - I'll be upset when Johns leaves ;-(
4. JLA
5. Green Lantern

It's amazing that I'm not really reading any Marvel nowadays. I agree with Lightning Lad that I'm a little bored with comics. I understand the business decision behind long story arcs for the trades but it would be nice to have some shorter complete stories every now and again.

my current favourite 5 [ and in order ]

1. 'Justice Society Of America'

2. 'Supergirl & The Legion Of Super Heroes'

3. '52'

4. 'Teen Titans'

5. 'Justice League Of America'

1. JSA
2. S&LSH
3. Ultimates 2
4. Ultimate Spider Man
5. Ultimate Fantastic Four/Teen Titans tie

Funny, I'm not really that much of a JSA fan, but right now the title is excellent. It is not often that LSH gets kicked out of first place on my list... As for the Ultimates, it's just a treat. I just wish that it'd come out more often.

Like Lightning Lad and a few others I'm also a bit bored with comics at the moment. That, added to the fact that I'm in kind of a tight money spot right now too means I've dropped a load of titles recently, and most of the ones I'm still buying are just barely hanging on.

The titles I buy (ranked in order of enjoyment) -

1. All Star Superman
2. 52
3. Justice League of America
4. Justice Society of America
5. Wonder Woman
6. Teen Titans
-. Brave and Bold (whenever it starts)

Titles I've dropped within the last year or so -

* Legion of Super-Heroes ('cause I *hated* it)
* Green Lantern ('cause funds wouldn't allow it)
* Shadowpact ('cause it disappointed me - I loved Day of Vengeance)
* Fables ('cause it frustrated me - don't like Snow or Bigby)
* Jack of Fables ('cause funds wouldn't allow it - though I did love it)
* Superman/Batman ('cause it turned to suck)
* JSA Classified ('cause I just stopped caring about it)
* Planetary ('cause it just became pretentious twaddle)
* Astro City ('cause "realistic" doesn't have to mean "endlessly depressing" Kurt)

The only title I'm not buying right now that I *REALLY* wish I was - is Walking Dead. I read so many good things about it and whenever I flick through it at the shop (quickly so as not to reveal spoilers) I love what I see. I could kick myself for not buying the opening issues when I had the chance! No shops have them any more and on eBay they go for outrageous amounts. A Lot of the first 30 issues recently sold for something like $250 on there! I know I should just go the Trade route but I'm not emotionally ready for that yet. [Wink] I may as well give up comics altogether if I'm going to start buying books. [Wink]

JSA, X-FACTOR, TEEN TITANS, UNCLE SAM & THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS and 52 are all consistently great titles that make me smile when I see them in my stack.

Any of the following could replace US&TFF when it's run ends next month: RUNAWAYS, ATOM, SHE-HULK, JLA, BIRDS of PREY, UNCANNY X-MEN (which would've made the top five if Brubaker hadn't committed to featuring villainous Vulcan without the other characters in a third- or is it a fourth? of his initial 12 issue storyline. Drop those issues, and you've got a sold piece of entertainment. Would've worked as back-ups spread throughtout the series). Adjectiveless X-Men might make the cut once the lineup shifts a bit (it's a tad too unreformed villains as members heavy, for me).

I'm looking forward to THOR, MIGHTY AVENGERS (though I'm leery of it's writer), COUNTDOWN, Dwayne Macduffie's FANTASTIC FOUR, BRAVE AND THE BOLD...

I also want to mention two series that come out very infrequently but are worth the wait and effort searching them out: AGE OF BRONZE and A DISTANT SOIL. They're both black and white and would be fairly difficult to join 'in progress'. Fortunately, earlier issues of both are available in trade paperback.

These were my stats as of Feb. 2007. Tme for a FALL 2007 update!

Favorite 5 (no particular order)

THE WALKING DEAD

It's absolutely addictive, even moreso once you've read the whole thing. My advice to those wanting to try it: Go the trades route, and don't buy just one. Get at least 2 (more if you can afford it) because you WILL want to see what happens next!

WELCOME TO TRANQUILITY

Gail Simone's small-town story has me completely hooked. Something for everyone.

BIRDS OF PREY

Making its first official entry into the top 5 after many mentions of being on the cusp, Bedard's recent done-in-one issues have pushed it over the hump, and I'm loving the new young teleporter Misfit.

JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA

Pretty much a standard here, for me.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA

I'm digging the whole "Legion of Doom" thing.

Contenders:

LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES

The recent B&C run has been MUCH better than the WaK run, but I'm betting once Shooter starts, we're going to see a quick re-entry into the top 5.

SHE-HULK

Too soon to tell how PAD's run will go, but his first issue was good.

SHADOWPACT

Still a favorite. Is Willingham gone?

GREEN ARROW/BLACK CANARY

That first issue was very good.

BOOSTER GOLD

I'd probably place it at # 6. Could break the top slots if quality maintains.

INFINITY INC

And I'd likely rank this at # 7 after only 2 issues. Time will tell wether it's upwardly mobile or not.

This top 5 is a first for me... Not 1 but 2 non-mainstream titles!

Supergirl and the Legion
Legion 31
Green Lantern Corps
Countdown
Castle Waiting

1. X-Factor -- So the conclusion of the last arc was unsatisfying. So what? There's still plenty to keep this at the top of my list: characters I care deeply about, an atmospheric setting, strong plots, sharp humor, good art (on every other arc, at least).

2. Captain America -- I don't know where it's heading, but the journey is a thrilling rollercoaster ride.

3. Green Lantern -- The excitement of the rocking Sinestro Corps War epic has been diluted by a dip in quality as it approaches the end (or is it? See below.) And where will Johns take the book once the SCW is over? After all, this story had been building since GL: Rebirth. In brighter news, the art continues to be consistently great, with Mike McKone scheduled for the next arc.

4. Green Lantern Corps -- Dave Gibbons will be leaving soon; his replacement, Peter Tomasi, is the former GL editor who revitalized the franchise, but can he write? Also, DC's apparent last-minute decision to extend the SCW because it's their only unqualified success ATM could have disastrous consequences.

5. X-Men: Emperor Vulcan (LS) -- I never would have thought I'd enjoy an LS that spun out of the disastrous year-long Shi'ar arc in Uncanny X-Men, but I am enjoying it, a lot. It's space opera done right, and if the next issue treats the Imperial Guard with the respect they deserve, it could rocket (forgive the pun) to the # 2 or # 3 spot.

Umbrella Academy
Atomic Robo
Captain America
Fables
Birds of Prey

--If the Lightning Saga Legion hangs around after their run in ACTION, That title could be one of my top 5. Barry and Matt Frac's Order is a solid T5 contender, as is IDW's Fallen Angel. JSA, Booster and ASSupes are in my Top 10. TWD is on my trades-only list.

Hopefully Francis and Shooter can revive my interest in the WaKboot Legion.

This was really a no brainer, and that surprised me.

1) Umbrella Academy - it is just that good.
2) Legion of Super-Heroes - less Kara has been much better.
3) Walking Dead - I read it in trades, but it still counts monthly.
4) X-Factor - PAD makes it a fun read.
5) Jonah Hex - and I'm not a western guy

Honorable Mentions
- Green Lantern
- Teen Titans
- X- Factor

And I’m actually a little shocked at how similar the list now is. Here’s my current top 5:

(1) Fables – still one of the best reads not only now, but anytime ever in comics. I actually think the series has never been better than it is right now. Each issue is usually the best comic in the stack of comics I need to read.

(2) Justice Society of America – the restart of the title kicked new life into it and it was already one of the best comics on the market. Geoff Johns shines here and I hope he never stops writing this comic. I never thought Hourman, Dr. Mid-nite, Liberty Belle and others would be some of my favorite characters and now they are! Plus the art has been fantastic.

(3) Captain America – Ed Brubaker may just be the best writer in comics, and Steve Epting may just be the best artist. Marvel’s Cap can go toe to toe with anything else someone puts up as the best ongoing series in comic books and has been that way for three years now. Each character, each page, each panel shines with something amazing. Marvel’s best comic.

(4) Daredevil – and this is Marvels second best comic. Brubaker here is equally phenomenal, and this may end up being the best period in DD’s history. I was never a Matt Murdock fan until recent years and now I probably feel more attached to him than 99% of Marvel & DC’s characters.

(5) Green Lantern – which has been nothing short of spectacular from the get-go (especially since OYL), but now moreso than ever with the Sinestro Corps War, which is probably the best thing DC has done in the last decade. Great writing, great art, amazing pacing and tension that keep me tuned but best of all is how Johns pays proper respect to all past Lanterns, whether Hal, Kyle, John or Guy, or the other alien Lanterns like Arisia and Tomar-Tu. Green Lantern Corp is also a great comic, but slightly below these top five.

Honorable Mentions
- Booster Gold – still too early to tell, but with a few issues already just outside the top five.
- X-Factor – consistently great, though what keeps it just out is sometimes it drags a bit, but still better than the majority of stuff out there.
- All-Star Superman – this is actually a great comic, but we’re doing monthly comics, not quarterly ones and I have no patience for that.
- Mice Templar – hey, its still way too early, but this was so fun that I can’t help but be pumped about it and rank it high.
- Jonah Hex – thought about including this in the top five, but GL beat it out. Amazing each week. Can’t wait for Jordi Bernet
- The Spirit – it sucks that Darwyn Cooke is leaving. This is the blueprint to what most comics should try and be. Its damn near perfect.

1) JSA ~ This has been at the top of my list since it relaunched. Great art & great storytelling.

2) Invincible ~ Continues to be one of the best reads every month.

3) Checkmate ~ As much as I hate, hate, hate Amanda Waller, this is a great book. Glad I took a chance on this one because it certainly isn't the type of series I would normally pick up.

4) Teen Titans ~ I'm really enjoying the way the team has evolved, particularly with the new members. Love Kid Devil, Ravager, & Miss Martian and of course, Tim has always been a favorite.

5) Blue Bettle ~ Much like Invincible, it's a great book dealing with a new hero coming to grips with his powers and the responsibility they bring. As much as I miss Ted, this is a great book on it's own and pays significant homage to Ted as a true hero. If you aren't buying this, I would encourage you to give it a shot.

Some also rans:

Shadowpact ~ Still enjoying it though it seems to have lost a little bit of steam recently.

Infinity Inc ~ This could easily break into my top 5 if the creative team manages to maintain their level of excellence.

Tranquility ~ Gail has a winner on her hands here.

JLA ~ This series started out slow & I almost dropped it but held on for the Lightning Saga. I've really enjoyed it since.

Green Lantern ~ Picked it up to check out the hype. I'll be onboard at least until Sinestro War finishes.

1. Fables - I agree with everything Cobalt Kid said. It's the one book I look forward to the most each month.

2. JSA - I was annoyed at the thought of starting the book over again with a new #1, but Johns really is taking it in a new direction. Starman is the breakout character of the year AFAIC.

3. S&LSH - Bedard's put some new life into it for me. Smaller focused groups taking on smaller missions should be the norm. Waid was a bit too ambitious andnever let us get a feel for the characters before he put them in earth-shattering situations.

4. Green Lantern/GLC - I admit I only got on board for the Sinestro Corps, but I like what I see. I may stay on after the War is over.

5. Countdown - Ok, I probably lost most people here, but I like this series. Sure the art needs work, but it's been an entertaining read for me each week. Plus it's got Lu in it. She's my fave, so unless they kill her, I'm hooked.

As 2009 draws to a close, what's doing it for you these days?

THE WALKING DEAD

Wow, just like in 2007... this book easily retains a slot in my top 5.

BLACKEST NIGHT

I might as well count miniseries. Especially ones that are done WELL. And make use of heroines like Mera. I mean, c'mon.... MERA. She freakin' rawks, as I always knew.
Plus I'm uber-excited about the upcoming 1-shots that continue numbering of long-cancelled titles.

DOOM PATROL featuring METAL MEN

I will freely admit that it is the Metal Men by Giff/DeM/Maguire that throws this easily into my top 5. I love everything they have ever done together and this is no exception. The DP lead has amped up with the current Blackest Night tie-in as well.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Even the wretched death-soaked ending of the last issue I read isn't enough to pull this usually-excellent book out of my top 5.... YET. Waiting to read the next issue and see if that still is true...

SECRET SIX

This book has been vastly underappreciated, IMO.

BUBBLING UNDER

ADVENTURE COMICS

Krypto!!!! The LSH (I really enjoyed the recent Sun Boy/Polar Boy tale)!! Paul Levitz on the way! Excitement level for comic... rising!!!!

JUSTICE LEAGUE

Yeah, Robinson shocked the crap out of me by recently killing 2 of the rare established gay JLAers... something he would have been the LAST writer I would suspect of doing... but I'm still excited about his all-new all-now JLA coming up...

Fables would be in here if IU read the book monthly...but I'm getting the Trades.

Been a while since I did this...kinda weird too, since I don't really read 5 books on a monthly basis.

The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead is by far the best book I am reading at the moment. Being a fan of Zombie Cinema, I love the concept itself...a zombie movie that doesn't end. There is an ever changing cast, with a few steady characters that have been around for the long haul. Others come and go...usually by some horrific means. New threats are introduced, and some of the most frightening threats are not the living dead that roam through the book.

Adventure Comics - The Legion of Super Heroes

I love the Legion, always have and always will. Looking forward to the new Levitz era.

The Flash

Whichever book/mini is currently going. Barry Allen is back, and while I would have been happy without him returning, I am enjoying having my favorite character of all time back in comics.

Blackest Night

Just reading the mini, with a few odd issues here and there, for the rings. Enjoying it, and should probably be reading GL as I love the trades I have read of John's run so far.

REBELS

Stealth's (current) fate keeps this out of my top 5 for now... we shall see where this whole Blackest Night thing goes...

Posted by Jerry on :

1) The Walking Dead - Consistently well written and suspenseful.

2) Detective Comics - Beautiful imaginative artwork. I'm having fun getting to know this new version of Batwoman.

3) Warlord - A total nostalgia trip. No heavy thinking. Pure escape. Grell obviously loves this series and his love for it is infectious. As a bonus, not a Black Lantern in sight.

4) Doom Patrol - The perfect team for Giffen's sensibilities. He's just nailing the characters of Cliff, Larry, and Rita. This is the most fun I have ever had reading the Metal Men.

5) Batman: Widening Gyre - Since we're counting miniseries. The return of Silver St. Cloud has captured my heart. The mysterious Baphomet is keeping me guessing.

In no particular order:

1) Fables - continues to captivate, and I'm warming up to the current storyline.

2) R.E.B.E.L.S. - I love this odd assortment of cosmic characters sucked into the ever-infuriating Vril Dox's web, as well as the development of the DCU's various worlds and races. I didn't like Stealth's fate either, but I'm hoping for some reasonable resolution.

3) Guardians of the Galaxy - wonderful space opera. The characters are mostly new to me, not being much of a Marvel reader, so it's all fresh. Best talking super-animals around. They're fiddling with alternate timelines, so some of the many deaths may get undone.

4) The Unwritten - an unusual journey into literature and a good mystery story. Different.

5) Doom Patrol/Metal Men - I'd buy separate issues for each team if they'd publish them. The Doom Patrol has discarded some of the extreme strangeness of Morrison's run yet developed beyond the simplicity of the classic DP. A good balance. And the Metal Men really are fun.

6) The Unknown - It would be in the top 5 if it wasn't a mini-series, but if it wasn't a mini-series, it might lose it's punch. A brilliant detective has a brain tumor, a limited lifespan and a burning desire to discover what happens after we die. Lots of surprises and double crosses in this.

This is probably the first time the Legion comic hasn't been in the top 5 for me. I like the Adventure stories, but they're nibbles - and by the time I get the actual issue, I've got a pretty good idea of what's gone on from the previews and posts from this forum. It will probably move back into the top 5 when Levitz comes on board and we get a full issue.

The Umbrella Academy, Secret Six and The Walking Dead I read in trades now. The Spirit lost me when Darwyn Cooke left. Welcome to Tranquility discontinued, or suspended - it's supposed to be returning but no news as to when.

My DCU reads in order:

1. The Brave & the Bold - it's only just begun but I really think this is going to be one of THE great runs in comics. JMS is telling so much more than just simple super-hero stories here. Fantastic.

2. Blackest Night - the logical end-point of DC's 'death and destruction' journey of the last few years. I just hope that, as promised, we leave the era behind for good after this. The fact that it's a fun, surprising and exciting story with great art is icing on the cake.

3. Green Lantern - Absolutely top-notch superhero stuff. I read each issue and just have fun!

4. Adventure Comics - So much better than I was expecting. I'm even liking both of the Superboys. Will probably rocket up the list when Levitz takes over.

5. Detective Comics - The best art in comics. An absolute joy to behold. And a new character that I am very much enjoying.

And the rest:

6. Green Lantern Corps
7. Superman: Secret Origin
8. Batman & Robin
9. Superman: World of New Krypton
10. The Doom Patrol
11. Flash Rebirth

My non-DCU reads are just Madame Xanadu and The Walking Dead both of which are fantastic and would probably take the #4 and #5 spots from Adventure and Detective if I were to add them to the list.

INCREDIBLE HERCULES-- Laughs, mythology and superheroics, loads of guest-stars... I think I enjoy this title month in and month out more than any other book. THOR's a close second, but it's schedule and change in creative team has me wary.

ADVENTURE/SUPERMAN-- A cheater's way to get the LSH in there- combining the back-ups in ADV. and the fleeting Legionnaire appearances in the Superman family of titles.

NEW MUTANTS-- Sure, I've got reservations, but I'm just enjoying these characters appearing together. Doug Ramsey's treatment in the most recent issue makes me hopeful for the direction of the title. Maybe.

DOOM PATROL/METAL MEN-- Empasis on the Metal Men, though each month the DP gets more enjoyable, I think. It's about to head into BLACKEST NIGHT. Maybe participating in a crossover will be a boon saleswise, too often I think such a situation just derails whatever momentum is being gained by a new title.

REALM OF KINGS/INHUMANS/IMPERIAL GUARD-- Are three minis the equal of one ongoing? If I had to pick one, it'd be Inhumans, as one of my favorite characters is once again the POV focus. Marvel's cosmic corner is a fun place to get sent.

I'm surprised Marvel outnumbers DC, as its usually the opposite for me. JSA, Teen Titans, etc. have been less enjoyable for awhile. Wonder Woman is close to the top. So are World of Krypton and Supergirl.

New Mutants (So nice to see Dani kicking ass again. That schoolmarm stuff just did not work.)

Dark Wolverine (This is not your father's Wolverine. [Wink] )

X-Force (The gore's a little much, but the story and art are great.)

Adventure (Although I'm two issues behind right now.)

Sticking with on-going books that I read monthly:

1) Secret Six - don't judge, it's just so chock full of addictive gooey badness

2) Detective Comics - the art makes this an easy buy. Throw in the Question back up and I'm at Rucka's mercy.

3) Adventure Comics - again, art makes it easy, the double feature makes it doubly so

4) House of Mystery - quirky, thoughtful, and always surprising

5) Batman & Robin - remember your first comic book? How cool was it? This book is that cool.

Anytime Mouse Guard or Umbrella Academy have a new book out, this line up is bound to change. And of course Fables and TWD are disqualified based on their TPB status

Well, Comic Book Review Month has ended and I’ve pretty much got all the reviews up for everything I was reading in January. This gives a good sense of where the industry is right now (though by now my February reviews shall be starting shortly). I figured I’d end CBM with a epilogue: namely, dong my Top 5 Favorite Current Titles. Since the last time I did this in October, 2007, the list isn’t all that different; three of the five remain while one was squeezed out (Daredevil) and the other dropped like a bag of hammers (JSA).

(1) Fables – Still after all these years, Fables remains one of the very best comic books on the market. It says a lot that every time I’ve ever made this list in this thread, I think Fables has been on it. The comic is just that damn good and anyone not reading it is really missing out on a once in an era type comic book. If I had to pick an absolute #1 best comic book, Fables would be it. Any facet of a comic book you can imagine? Fables is the best at it.

(2) Green Lantern – Green Lantern proves that superhero comic books can still be the very best thing the industry can offer when they are done right. This is Geoff Johns at his very best with all of his best qualities at their height and all of his worst qualities not even present. It is science-fiction, superhero and just pure adventure. Johns blends longtime characters like Sinestro and Carol Ferris that he’s made interesting and relevant again with all new characters like Agent Orange and Atrocitus that are fascinating and leave you wanting more. He’s taken the existing GL mythos and built on it incredibly, creating a huge tapestry. DC realizes what a gem they have here and basically follows Geoff around, wrapping the rest of the DCU around whatever storyline he’s creating. That could be annoying to some but it shows they recognize what a gold mine Geoff is creatively.

(3) Captain America – Many might not agree with Cap still being on the list but I don’t quite see why. The series has remained a high quality, excellent comic book since Brubaker kicked things off with #1. In the years since my last review Cap has died, Bucky took his place and now Cap is back, and yet through all of those major events, Bru never forgot that each issue needs to tell an excellent story with excitement and great characters. This is probably the best “spy” comic since Jim Steranko’s SHIELD in the late 1960’s…and I actually think its better than that. The comic book is so good that I actually don’t have a preference to who is Captain America (Steve Rogers or Bucky): as long as Brubaker is writing, I’m comfortable with what is ahead. The artwork has also been a huge plus here; Steve Epting was excellent and I’ll be sad to see him go. Butch Guice, another artist I like who will really fit the spirit of the series, leaves me feeling confident that level of quality will remain.

(4) Scalped – When I finally meet LardLad face to face, I owe him a drink. Because his introducing me to Scalped is one of the two best recommendations for a title I’ve ever had. Scalped is the grittiest, roughest crime / noir comic book I’ve perhaps ever read and its also one of the most powerful and poignant. The characters in Scalped are so well developed that they appear to have more layers to them than most people I know in real life. There is no doubt that the best comic book company these days is Vertigo (sans the rest of DC Comics), and Scalped is a major reason why.

(5) The Walking Dead – All that praise you’ve ever heard about the Walking Dead? Guess what: Its been understated. The Walking Dead, the other great recommendation I’ve ever had (by Lightning Lad) by the way, is the great work of our era about human psychology in the wake of a huge disaster. Everyone should know by now that this isn’t a book about zombies but rather about normal people who have to live in a never-ending zombie apocalypse, but its still worth repeating. The characters are fleshed out and layered and full of flaws…and in this world that means just about anything can go wrong, and usually does. In this comic book, just about anything goes and the surprises and changes to the story will continue to come one after another, leaving you feel battered and bruised like you’re living in a zombie apocalypse as well. And the horror? Its there in spades, and never in the way you’d imagine. The only comparable work to TWD is Stephen King’s “The Stand”, and this not only holds its own against that masterpiece…it might have it beat.

Honorable Mentions – still what I call the very best in the industry
Parker: The Hunter – the only reason this isn’t in the top 5 is because it was a one-shot TPB. This is indeed a literary triumph
Brave & Bold – very close to making the Top 5, Brave & Bold by JMS is proving to be one of the best comic books in years. See the thread and be amazed at all the positive reviews.
Green Lantern Corps – an action-packed team comic book done right, loaded with space opera and science-fiction.
Daredevil – with new writer Andy Diggle its still excellent but I need to give it time to see how it develops
Umbrella Academy – as a series of miniseries its not currently out right now but when it returns I’ll be waiting for this excellent series.
Madame Xanadu – Matt Wagner proves he’s still a master storyteller in this quirky series in which the artists sometimes show him up with their talent
Air – another Vertigo series that is blowing me away
Warlord – Mike Grell is really impressing me here! Great art, exciting stories and characters and easy for new readers (like me)
Spider-Woman – like Geoff Johns in GL, this is Brian Bendis with all his best qualities on display and all his worst not present.
Nova – DnA provide month in and month out one of the most exciting science-fiction comics ever with a great solo lead and fantastic plots
Guardians of the Galaxy – DnA also provide one of the best team books in science-fiction ever with GotG; between these two series, DnA are doing science-fiction the way Marvel & DC should have always done it
Jonah Hex – Its pretty damn impressive to see the level of quality that has been in place on this title now past its 50th issue. Great, great series
Battlefields – Garth Ennis doing the best war comic books in years; a master doing what he does best
Unknown – Mark Waid reminds us he is still a great writer, particularly when its his own property in a quirky genre like detective stories; excellent artwork
Atomic Robo – you can’t put this comic book down without having a huge smile on your face because that’s the sense of enthusiasm the creators have for sci-fi

Note the Honorable Mentions aren’t just what I consider “good”; these are the very best. There are many other “good” comic books that I collect, like REBELS, Unknown Soldier, Supergirl, Adventure, Secret Six and Hercules. But these above are just so damn good that I felt not mentioning them was almost a criminal act. Every one of them should be a comic book *you* are reading.

PS – Worst Comics Books you must Avoid
Because I feel these series are akin to pornography used by terrorists to raise money:
Titans
Teen Titans

Even if we leave aside Reborn for the moment, which I've made my feelings clear on (since we now know Bucky is going to remain the title character here, and SR will only pop in occasionally, it seems like even MORE of a diversion than it did at the time), this title's slipped quite a bit for me since #42 - the Man With No Face/Professor Chin arc is filed under "mildly interesting diversion", and for all the controversy, the current arc feels a bit like killing time while waiting for Siege to tie up.

And I'm really not sold on outright revillainising Helmut Zemo. At all. Especially given that Nicieza left the character violently rejecting his father and all he stood for.

This is another one which has been slipping, but the newest issue - which I only read today - is the best issue since... oh... around #7, so that may be changing... if it survives. It isn't in the May solicits, and sales have been slipping quite badly (Nova's overtaken it for the first time, but that's by virtue of falling a bit slower).

There's a "Thanos Imperative" one-shot in place of both it AND Nova, granted, but I fear that the writing is on the wall, and event it sets up may take the form of a miniseries to bring the curtain down on DnA's cosmic reign...

Cobie is so good at this, but I'll give it a shot.

1) Adventure/Superman/Supergirl/Action/JLA/New Krypton - I consider them one book and that book is Legion of Super Heroes. Action's pretty silly at the moment and JLA is pretty dry. New Krypton is getting to be 'Old Krypton' but we're about to see some changes with Brainiac and the 'Bright Day' stuff that starts in May or something.
But, I love the Robinson work with the Legion/Lar and the wonderful Bedard/Johns take on Krypto.
I love hunting for Legionnaires in the past, too.

2) [and second after Adventure] dotREBELS - Bedard is right on with these characters and I love Lyrl very much. The art is amazing, too.

3) Inhumans/Imperial Guard from Realm of Kings - on. I love both groups and have for so many years. DnA are well, DnA and I love them, even they they mess with Jan.

4) I can't seem to stay away from Wonder Woman. I really enjoyed her Blackest Night mini.

5) The only other thing I'm reading right now is Superman's Secret Origin mini, which I'm enjoying.

I might try that Umbrella Academy, since Planetary and Top Ten are finished (I guess they're finished.)
sigh

I'm tempted to just type 'Legion' to encapsulate the Superman stuff, too, Shady- but I don't quite enjoy it as much as you do. Parts of it, yeah.

1. HERCULES-- between THOR and WW, comic book mythological characters have had a pretty good showing recently. Oops- except for the deaths of at least three gods, so far. Ah, well. The mythological guys and gals are characters that even the most 'comic book deaths should be final' readers will give free resurrection passes. Anyway, Herc's been the most consistently enjoyable solo title I read. Humor, exotic settings, lots of guest stars and what seems to be a definite master plan that hasn't been too upset by Dark Ages, Sieges, etc.

The only drawback? The title's run has come to an end (apparently) to be replaced by an Amadeus Cho starring PRINCE OF POWER title.

2. SECRET SIX-- Fun reading month in and month out. Great (if sick and twisted at times) humor, unique characters, stories that just wouldn't appear in other team books. I forget how 'bad' these villains really are. Love the new sixer, Jeanette (though she needs an alias). The book successfully navigated the BLACKEST NIGHT tie-in with a fun guest-starring turn by the much missed original (mostly) SUICIDE SQUAD featuring a last-page revelation that should lead somewhere verrrry interesting. I wish the original SECRET SIX would be featured somehow-- that was a groovy title.

3. WONDER WOMAN-- I'm glad someone else mentioned this title, as it's probably the least 'loved' book on my list. I really dug the long (OK- probably too long) recent storyline, though I did dislike the whole Genocide part of it. I really, really like some of the additions to Wondy's supporting cast-- Achilles, the white apes who love Diana, the villainous bald chick, Alkyone (apparently dead- but c'mon, a despicable, unredeemable villainess is GOLD!) Not everyone's gonna like this, from other reader's comments, though I don't really get why so many don't?

4. REALM OF KINGS-- A bit of a cheat, since any given month I'd pick INHUMANS or IMPERIAL GUARD or NOVA or GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY for this spot. Unfortunately, every title doesn't belong here every month. This is my sentimental pick, as it's my love for some of the characters that gets these interconnected books a mention. I'm sad that Havok and Polaris have been bounced from the title, as Lorna's interaction with her one-time sister-in-law and niece were nice ancillary touches. Besides, as little panel-time as they got, it's more than they'll likely get in the very crowded X-verse.

5. NEW MUTANTS-- OK, I guess this is a sentimental pick, too. I really like seeing the old gang back together (though I wish their adventures could be more detached by everything going on back on Utopia Island). The series opened with one of my least favorite New Mutant foes (Legion) and made me appreciate that character much more than I formerly did. Their participation in the NECROSHA storyline brought them some attention, but did sort of bring any characterization, new title momentum to a halt. (New titles should get a pass for crossovers- or have split storylines or something. I don't know what the solution is.) I miss Rahne and think her reunion with her Wolf Prince from the Asgard stories in the 1980's should've crossed over with NM. That would've made the whole thing worthwhile. Or more worthwhile, as the returns of Doug Ramsey (written admirably) and Warlock earned that description. The story around Dani Moonstar seems to be driving the title. I'd be more certain if panel hogs like Cyclops and White Queen would keep to *supporting* status for this title, instead of spreading their leading role title into anything in which their overexposed faces stray.

I was tempted to include TEEN TITANS and TITANS, just to read Cobie's reaction! I like those titles a bit more than terrorist-supporting porno (would non-terrorist supporting porno be equally reviled, I wonder?), but mainly just because of my affection for many of the characters, rather than actual enjoyment of some of the stories. They haven't *all* been bad. At the least, I liked being reacquainted with an old favorite that I frankly thought I'd never read in a mainstream DCU title again- Kid Eternity. (Whose treatment in TT sort of did read like something an anti-KE terrorist would come up with...)

Sad not to include JSA or an AVENGERS title. There's still lots to like about those titles- but there's been enough to equally feel put off by to render them neutral. For me, anyway.

Hmm, My favourites are:

1. New Mutants
2. Dark Wolverine
3. Wonder Woman
4. X-Force
5. Adventure Comics

Those last two were hard to come up with. I'm not reading a lot of titles rigth now, and most of them are x-books. Some of those may get dropped after Second Coming.

Also, I just read Making Comics and Reinventing Comics by Scott McCloud and I couldn't put them down.

Posted by Power Boy on :

1. Madame Xanadu
2. The Guild (but i think it just ended with issue 3?)
3. Black Widow
4. Astonishing X-men: Exogeneis (I'm intrigued and Storm has a mowhawk again)
5. The Avengers (I'm intrigued - good start)

6. Power Girl

Also:
7. X-Men (which ever one Greg Land happens to draw - he was doing uncanny then did legacy ---- despite my being picky about the story)
8. X-force (despite the carnage but i like the action and love Mike Choi's art)
9. Dark Wolverine

Titles that just ended:
1. New Avengers
2. Witchfinder: Sir Edward Grey
3. Spider Woman

Short term:
1. The Authority: The lost year (a 2 issue funny by Giffen + DeMatteis)

Posted by Dev Em on :

1. The Walking Dead - No other comic can make you anticipate the next issue as much as this one.

2. Chew - Great comic that throws twists and turns into every issue.

3. The Legion of Super Heroes - So glad to have them back.

4. The Flash - This is turning into a great classic feel comic.

5. Secret Six - Have not had this much fun with a bunch of villians since the Suicide Squad.

Posted by stuorstew on :

1. Supergirl - Not proper Kara yet. But getting there.

2. Legion of Super-Heroes - A great first issue and high hopes for the future.

3. Madame Xanadu - Great stories, gorgeous art and in the current story line Jonn Jonzz!

4. Incorruptible - The flip side of Irredeemable and by far the better book.

5. Fantastic Four - A great return to form under Hickman

So I just reviewed this entire thread and thought I'd tally up and dicuss the titles that I mentioned in my top 5 each time...

FEB 04

INHUMANS... lasted 12 issues [Frown]

TEEN TITANS... was a fave for a long time

OUTSIDERS... that all changed with issue 26 of that title

SUPREME POWER... died a slow, painful death

JSA... long-time favorite

AUG 05

YOUNG AVENGERS... I hear the orignal creative team is doinga return engagement for this!

HAWKMAN... GrayPal's run was golden

JSA... of course

TEEN TITANS... more Geoff

LEGION of SUPER-HEROES... WaK's first few issues before it all went tits-up

FEB 06

YOUNG AVENGERS... Ready for the next one!

SHE-HULK... Slott's relaunch/2nd series

THE THING... Lasted 8 issues but was so fun (Slott)

JSA... Yep

TEEN TIANS... Yep x2

FEB 07

JUSTICE SOCIETY of AMERICA... Geoff's great relaunch

TEEN TITANS... Geoff/Tony Daniel's **great*** run

HEROES FOR HIRE... GrayPal's run was Giffen/DeMatties/Maguire Justice League-level awesome. Went straight to the shitter when they left.

SHE-HULK... Slott

52... Pretty darned good

OCT 07

THE WALKING DEAD... By now, Scott had gotten me hooked on TWD.

WELCOME TO TRANQUILITY... Lasted 12 issues; I hear a new one is coming.

BIRDS OF PREY... Bedard's done-in-1 tales.

DOOM PATROL/METAL MEN... Loved the Giffen/DeMatteis/Maguire run of Metal Men

GUARDIANS of the GALAXY... Good run.

SECRET SIX... An excellent series.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

SO all that leads us to CURRENT faves!

THE WALKING DEAD... read 74 last night... Still love this book... Am so excited for the TV Show I could burst.

BOOSTER GOLD... the Giffen/DeMatteis/Batista team is golden.

SECRET SIX... Maybe DC's most consistently-good book.

DOOM PATROL... Ambush Bug. Crazy Jane. Good stuff.

The 5th slot is hard to choose. JUSTICE LEAGUE GENERATION LOST has been excellent but isn't open-ended. LSH just relaunched... # 2 showed major promise of return to greatness but enough for the 5th slot yet?? Levitz' first ADVENTURE story was great but it's still so new... Oh, wait... I know...

I ZOMBIE... Mike Allred art at its POPpiest. A cast of characters I can truly appreciate. A premise that is both gross and fascinating. I'm glad I ZOMBIE made the cut.

Lash, great idea! I’m stealing your structure and doing my own! Each post I had was filled with honorable mentions and all that because I’m a wordy sonuvagun but I’ll give the basics.

FEB 04

Daredevil – from the get-go of Lash doing these, Daredevil was one of the premiere comics in the industry in terms of quality. 2004 was still Bendis and it was still rocking.

JSA – ditto for JSA. At this point it was already one of the best in the industry and still kicking.

Flash – the run that put Geoff on the map IMO; his first Flash run was so incredible.

Supreme Power – I just bumped the “Dropped Balls” thread thinking about this title which at one time felt so prominent among the most quality comics. Like Lash said, died a slow painful death.

The Human Target – a great title and the fact that it was in my top 5 underscores that.

-------------------------

AUG 05

Young Avengers – like so many others, I was totally blown away by Young Avengers.

JSA – still was king.

Legion of Super-Heroes – totally bought into LSH, my fave franchise, before truly letting it stand up on its own. Joke was on me—the threeboot was totally sucktacular and a pukefest in story.

Captain America – Bru’s Cap debuts and floors me with its excellence, becoming a top 5 reg for years.

Hawkman – Graypal’s Hawkman was one damn fine run and the best the character ever had.

--------------------------

FEB 07

JSA – Three in a row at this point; man this was so good for so long its sad that its no longer that good.

52 – A high point in comics history.

Captain America – things changed but it was still Bru & Epting and still fantastic.

Daredevil – It should have never left the top 10 in the first place (stupid LSH); from Bendis to Bru it only got BETTER.

Fables – I’d been collecting for awhile by now but by now it was clear this was the gold standard of the industry.

------------------------

OCT 07

Fables – clearly the best title in comics

Justice Society of America – relaunched with Geoff I thought for sure it’d regain its quality…but it never happened. The entire 2nd Geoff run was a bit of a bummer actually.

Captain America – yup

Daredevil – yup; it was only with Bru’s run that the quality dipped slightly to fall out of the top 5 (but is still a solid comic book IMO and definitely worth reading).

Green Lantern – Geoff’s GL clearly was fantastic and by now cracks my top 5. I think around this time it had truly hit its stride.

-----------------------------

BIG JUMP almost 2 and ˝ years:

Feb 10 (tail end of Comic Book Review Month in Jan 2010)

Fables – Still the industry’s best

Green Lantern – DC’s premiere superhero comic, still kicking ass

Captain America – others disagree but I feel it still holds up. I’m hard-pressed to find many better titles.

Scalped – Lardy turned me on to this and I’m still floored by its quality. One of the greatest comics EVER, let alone right now. I’m confident this will stay in the top 5 until it one day ends.

The Walking Dead – I came late to the party but once I got there, I dived right in. There is a reason this gets so much praise and after loving every second of making my way through 75 issues I’m so thrilled I can experience this as its happening, perhaps the single best comic book experience in our lifetimes.

--------------------------

It’s only a few months later since my last one so I’m inclined not to do an update. The top 5 is probably just about the same with only GL and Cap in any danger, and that’s only because there are so many other great titles out right now (Atomic Robo, Mice Templar, Secret Six, Jonah Hex, SHIELD). I’ll let things play out a few more months and see how it goes.

It's been a year-plus since I updated this.

With the axe about to fall on the current DCU next month, I figured I'd go ahead and update now, for future reference.

My top 5 in JULY 2010 were:

THE WALKING DEAD... read 74 last night... Still love this book... Am so excited for the TV Show I could burst.

BOOSTER GOLD... the Giffen/DeMatteis/Batista team is golden.

SECRET SIX... Maybe DC's most consistently-good book.

DOOM PATROL... Ambush Bug. Crazy Jane. Good stuff.

I ZOMBIE... Mike Allred art at its POPpiest. A cast of characters I can truly appreciate. A premise that is both gross and fascinating.

NOWADAYS (in no particular order):

THE WALKING DEAD... pretty much a mainstay

SECRET SIX... there really is nothing else like it.

YOUNG AVENGERS... Children's Crusade still has 3 more issues which will probably take the better part of a year to come out, so I don't feel guilty about listing this one... besides, I consider it pretty much a series of miniseries these days anyway.

ZATANNA... I think DC is about to lose one of its current best titles next month.

I ZOMBIE... I swim in the lovely ocean of Allred's art. The story's picking up pretty well too!

Sadly, I've learned today that Aaron announced at CCI that Scalped ends with issue 60. (51 was just released today.) I know it's going to end the way it's intended to end, but I was hoping for about 70-75 issues. [Frown]

Hopefully, Aaron and Guera will tell some untold tales as OGNs and what-not as they have said they might. I'm gonna miss this book!!!

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

At least it's ending as it should. It's been so mind-blowingly good.

FYI, my little brother(age 23) just read the first 6 trades.

Only Walking Dead and Fables approach Scalped in terms of quality.

Lash ordered me to come to this thread (because I am just now discovering Secret Six) I feel like a bad puppy ... that pooped on the carpet ...

But I am hard pressed to come up with 5.

1. Secret Seven 3 issue limited series
(It just ended and I could be more thrilled about the ending ... but it's still grrr eat)

2. X-Men Legacy
(yeah i kinda think so, I love Frenzy's dialogue, and I like the tracking down Legion's alternate personalities plot, and the characters are actually doing something rather than going on and on about something big that is coming that will change everything. )

3. IZombie

4. Journey Into Mystery
(It's more of a back story but I love the schemes/efforts of innocent little Loki)

5. Young Avengers Children's Crusade (whew I had a hard time thinking of five)

----------------------------------------------------

The big events have really taken the wind out of many titles for me. Before Fear Itself, another Avengers title or another X title might have made it on the list. The reboot has also totally juggled what I want to read, I'm trying a lot of stuff that will go away in September. I'm giving Power Girl and Zatanna another try and I'm pretty happy with them.

-------------------------------------------------
Some honorable mentions that I appreciate but don't love unconditionally

The Mighty Thor sizzles off the page because of Coipel.
Uncanny X-Force is well done all around.

-------------------------------------------------
I'm actually currently reading A LOT of back issues I missed the first time around.

Giffen did a short run on Outsiders recently I'm trying to track down. Tons of old Action Comics, and X-Force/X-Statics.

I'm devouring and in LOVE with Jack Knight Starman!! This has jumped into one of my all time favorite titles ... and is a contender for that desert island.

I'm waiting to read the Walking Dead and Irredeemable in the trades. so I'm a few months behind the rack on those.

I'm also just geting to know Secret Six and Birds of Prey through back issues. I quite like them!!

I'd like to give Batwoman and Batgirl Year One a go but I haven't been able to find them at the store.

It seems like my top 5 can change every few months based on the creative team and the big events.
-----------------------------------------------------

AHH I almost forgot. Dark Wolverine! Daken is still cool. He's Number 6.

PB, I'm with you on Journey into Mystery--I'm loving it! Loki's schemes are great, and it's loaded with characters I like reading about (Tyr--yes!).

The best Thor writer in recent years was Kieron Gillen and he proves it again here. Loki is incredibly cunning yet his youthful boy status quo gives him an underdog / naive type quality your root for.

Well-written comic!

From 2008 in the "Roundtable" thread (when I didn't know of this thread's existence [Embarrassed] ):

My list:

*Green Lantern: My most traditional superhero pick on the list. What can I say? Geoff Johns is THE MAN, and GL is the title where he's clicking on all cylinders! I've always liked Hal Jordan, and Geoff literally brought him back from the dead. Awesome, awesome comic with no signs of letdown forthcoming.

*Scalped: Wow! Vertigo lives again for me! I'd been in a Vertigo recession since Y: The Last Man ended, but I read a column in Brubaker's Criminal about this title about Indian mob bosses, a kickass nunchuk-slingin', hard livin' main character with loads of secrets and enough eye-opening relevance about life on a Reservation--and I haven't looked back since! It's gritty, brilliant, full of shocks and very different from anything you'd normally expect from Vertigo! I'm hooked for the duration!

*Daredevil: I knew I had to pick an Ed Brubaker title for this list. Criminal would've made the cut, but it's currently on hiatus while Ed and Sean Philips fire up Incognito. In any case while Ed's Captain America is in a slight slump, DD is really beginning to fire on all cylinders! Ed spent much of his first two years trying to tie up the Bendis era, but he's really starting to rock out on the title! This title is evolving more and more and is starting to feel like a huge epic that harkens back to the salad days with Frank Miller.

*Walking Dead: The single title I'm most addicted to currently! The zombie apocalypse has arrived, and it's not over in two hours! With no end in sight, we follow an ever-evolving core of characters (because many, many die as we go along--even hugely popular ones!) as they struggle to survive not only zombies but each other! Not for the faint of heart but really, really satisfying horror because of the human element.

*The fifth was surprisingly hard to narrow down, but I'll go with The Immortal Iron Fist for the moment. This is a character who'd been the butt of jokes forever until Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction finally realized the character's potential when the started his new ongoing last year. I was always fond of Danny Rand, and those guys showed me why. I love the mysticism, the legacy and the overall coolness this title has. Best of all, it hasn't dropped off at all since Duane Swierczynski took over this year--one story arc under his belt, and I'm sold! How often does that happen when a lower tier character is revived and the hot creators leave? Not very often.

Other than GL, all of these have in common a more nontraditional gritty, realistic or stylized artistic take. I've become quite enamored of art that is less traditionally "pretty" in recent years, but they are all very well crafted and appropriate to their subject matter. (That said, I think Ivan Reis's more traditional Neal Adams-esque art style is absolutely gorgeous!)

August 2011:

Walking Dead: Still there and the only book I read as soon as it comes out! Totally addicted to it and all its twist and turns.

Scalped: Such a great, great saga with compelling characters that live, breathe and constantly surprise you.

American Vampire: It was tempting to put Snyder's run on Detective here instead, but this is where he lets loose with his own characters! Snyder is the next big writer in comics. He's not much of a secret anymore, but if you try AmVamp out, I'm sure you'll see his rep is deserved!

Morning Glories: Before Scott Snyder was Nick Spencer. MG is an addicting mystery full of unexpected twists and turns. It's the comics equivalent of Lost with its layered mysteries. Like Lost, it's the characters that keep you coming back for more!

Chew: Awesome, twisted and, yes, funny comic book set in a world where chicken has been outlawed. John Layman & Rob Guilloroy may be the best writer/artist team in comics right now, for my money!

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

I'll give it some more thought but my list may actual totally mimic yours, Lardy! I'd only sub-in Fables (which remains fantastic) but it's too hard to figure out which one it'd replace!

Also, Green Hornet: Year One! Okay, maybe that's 7.

Thunder Agents? I better stop...

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Wow--all of mine are creator-owned this go-round! I suspect this will be true in future updates as well, given where my tastes are heading... [Yes]

Closest corporate-owned books to getting in were Detective Comics (written by AmVamp's Snyder) and Amazing Spider-man!

Hmm... I think I'm going to have a hard time thinking of 5 titles that I really like. let's see:
- Green Lantern: Always a big fan of Hal, Johns's stories aren't my favorite, but they are big and feel important to the mythos.
- Moon Knight: I'm listing this mostly because I'm a fan of the character. I'm not really taken by Bendis's interpretation and I find Maleev's art attractive, but the photoreferencing makes people look too stiff.
- Hmmm.... Ok, I give up already. Everything else I'm currently buying is just kinda ... eh

Behind on my reading...but here we go (in no particular order):

American Vampire - Just a great book all the way around, and I am not that big of a fan of Vampires.

The Walking Dead - The best book I read at the moment probably. The first one I want to read when I get a new issue anyway.

Chew - Funny, twisted and the best book that not enough people are reading.

Green Hornet: Year One - Remember that movie that came out with Seth Rogan...this is nothing like that. This is unbelievably good. Need to catch up though.

Alpha Flight - Actually enjoying the hell out of this book and looking forward to it more than any other 'hero' book out there right now. Who would have thunk.

Yay another alpha flight fan. I'm a long time AF follower and have stuck with them through thick and thin. It is the only other group that recieved thier own photomanip gallery on my site (of course the Legion has 5 unique galleries!)

My list in no particular order:

Alpha Flight
Legion of Superheroes
Walking Dead
GI Joe
Lenore (though this one is kinda spotty on being published regularly)

Right now my 5 current favorite books are (in alphabetical order):

BATWING -- I've always loved the art for this book, and right now the story is a non-sentimental portrayal of an African Bat-hero who is rising from his violent past as a child soldier.

DAREDEVIL -- Humorous, quirky, suspenseful on several levels. The writing and art are an excellent match. Always in the background is a blind man's not-so-hidden bluff.

KIRBY: GENESIS -- I always thought Kirby created outstanding, iconic characters, and I loved the concept of his art, but not so much the rendering itself. In this book, the character designs come to new life, in a way I like. And for a story with so many characters that are new to me, it's been easy to follow without being simplistic. The young Kirby has been a perfect viewpoint character.

NIGHTWING -- Dick Grayson and I have grown up together. Unfortunately, I've aged faster than he has. I haven't really kept close tabs on him over the years, except here and there in Teen Titans. But I'm really liking the guy out from under the Bat wings and living his own life. And not a typical super-hero life, but one grounded in his past with the circus. There are some interesting possibilities here, and so far it looks like those stories will be well-told.

WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN -- Although I've not been a big Wolverine fan, I am a fan of stories about young (or not) people finding their way. I also usually enjoy team books more than solo characters, but you could hardly call this crew a team. But it has a charming collection of strange characters and some good writing and art. It's a fun read.

I'm surprised to have two Bat-books on this list and three solo character books. But these are the ones that for now I most enjoy getting each month.

I must say that any Legion book is still what I read immediately upon purchase. But it's like one might do with an old, dear friend...you care about what's going on in their lives, even when what's going on now isn't the most fun to hear about. That's how Legion is for me at the moment, so although the LSH is in its own favorite category for me, right now it's not in my 5 favorites list.

My 5 current fave titles are...

The Walking Dead - Stilll loving this book after all these years. Wonder how long he'll continue it?

Ghostbusters - I love this book. It's fun and feels like a good continuation of the movies.

Animal Man / Swamp Thing - I know...but these are two books that feel like opposite sides of the same coin.

The Flash - This is a beautiful book. The art in this compliments the story in way that very few books can achieve.

The Shade - It feels like going home again. JAmes Robinson at his best when he is writing tales from Opal City characters.

This is pretty difficult for me because there are so many great series that I’m currently reading. So I’ll include a few notable mentions and limit my list to only ongoing series (no one-off miniseries, though series of miniseries included).

Walking Dead – this continues to be a juggernaut in the industry and the high quality remains totally intact. The recent storylines show Kirkman’s willingness to evolve and keep the series going forward.

Unwritten – In 2011 and early 2012, this series jumped up my list from “one of the better series out there” to “one of my favorites”. I’m just loving how three years in, the series is firing on all cylinders. Mysteries are revealed and even though these are some heavy concepts, they are explained in a way that is concise and intricate.

American Vampire – I’m blown away month in and month out by how well written this series is.

Atomic Robo – series like this justify the reason this medium even exists. It’s essentially a perfect series on every level.

Daredevil – Hands down the best superhero comic book going, and certainly the best comic book produced by either DC or Marvel; every issue is just a big creative victory and it’s a pleasure to be part of.

Honorable Mentions
Morning Glories – probably my #6; great writing, amazing art, brilliant characters and a tone & moodiness to it that are unlike anything else going.

Scalped – I only leave it out because I haven’t read the latest trades since the last time I did this; but I suspect it really belongs in my top 5 as it’s a contender for best comic book series of the last 20 years.

Fables – this series has been consistently in my top 5 since it was created. It remains a high favorite of mine; maybe I’m guilty of the annoying habit of taking for granted a good thing by not including it here, but just right now I feel the five series above get me more juiced up. Still, this is certainly a top 10 candidate

Flash – this is probably the single best DC comic out right now and the only on that can compare on a quality level with the other titles I’ve mentioned. I think Manupal and Buccelato have done an amazing job of making sure every single panel has something strong going on from a story-telling perspective.

All-Star Western – sometimes a creative team have so mastered a character that all it takes is for them to write that character in a new setting, with a new supporting cast, or a new artist, to take the series to a whole new level. That’s what has happened with Graypal & Jonah Hex.

Journey into Mystery – its about time Marvel had a series this strong. It’s basically Tales of Asgard written in a slight Neil Gaiman-esque way while being entirely its own thing.

Chew – the funniest comic book series of the last 10 years, it also has a ton of heart, great characters and a damn intelligent plotline.

Green Hornet: Year One – didn’t include it because its essentially over; it’s by far the very best mystery man superhero story to come out in many a year.

Wolverine and the X-men: sublime silliness and the wackiest cast I can recall.

Journey into Mystery: the telling of a new myth: but is the weight of history inescapable?

Avengers Academy: teenage soap with the Avengeriest aroma!

LSH: Love the art and the method. Just needs a little more heart.

Fantastic Four: Most ambitious. Johnny' s return settled any quibbles. Want more Inhumans.

The Fearless, X-factor, Nightwing, Flash, Teen Titans are all titles I considered, but each has something about it holding it back.

Action Comics - I am liking this return to Superman's roots

Batgirl - Gail Simone

Justice League International - Liking the team. Liking the "new" characters.

Superman - Good story line so far

Hawk & Dove - Nah just kidding. Legion of Superheroes - I find myself warming to Dragonwing and Chemical Kid, which I thought would not happen.

Scalped
Fatale

I just realized I only get like 12-15 comics a month now!

The cutest guy at my CBS said today there wasn't a trade yet for Wolverine and the X-Men. I checked the shelf to be sure and didn't see one. However, I *did* score issues 5-8 and placed them in my pull bag. I'm going to kind-of hold on to them until I get the trade for the first issues!

comics are so good right now so:

1. Scalped
2. Wolvie and the X-Men
3. Unwritten (is so good right now)
4. Powers
5. Shade

Some books I'm watching/enjoying:

Saga (I can't imagine it will go anywhere but up. It would've made the top 5 but Unwritten's finale has bumped it out. )

Powers bumped out Hellblazer as well. I love John Constantine.

Fatale
Daredevil (Although #11 was really a drop in quality IMO, with the guest starring of Spidey and Punisher)

Super Crooks
New Deadwardians

----------------------------

I may jump back into Journey into Mystery with a new story arc. not sure.

iZombie has gotten a little stale. Even though they are working up to a big climax.

Uncanny X-Force has really fizzled for me.

Otherwise I'm getting Uncanny X-Men and the Ultimates but those are really just for fun.

I'm really surprised at how many no superhero comics I'm getting and loving right now. it's such a good time for Vertigo, Image, and the independents.

Some stuff I'm loving but in the trades:

Morning Glories
American Vampire

Just when you think Unwritten can't get any better, the latest issue comes out! Apparently, there is somewhere to from here--and it's going to be even crazier!

I'm surprised others aren't following two contenders for best series: Prophet and Glory! I'm talking CRAZY GOOD. I think I'll start a new thread later detailing how good. The extreme relaunch is the best line wide relaunch since Julie Schwartz and the DC Silver Age. And that's from someone who never followed Extreme before and knows nothing about it besides Alan Moore. I recommend these two comics like I recommend drinking and kinky sex.

Journey into Mystery has been killing it! Damien Hellstrom stopped by for the latest and I realize it's the first time I've liked seeing him in a comic since...well, since before I was born!

Over at Dynamite, the Lone Ranger is utterly fantastic. Anyone who ever enjoyed a western, regardless of tone or style, should try it.

I won't do another top 5 yet, but as Peebs said--comics are so good right now!

I've not updated my list since August 2011, so- 10 months into the DCnU- here we go:

EARTH 2:

I know it's only 2 issues in, but this shiznit kicks ass. There's a really awesome "Supreme Power only BETTER than Supreme Power" vibe going on and I am **TOTES** digging the all-young sorta-similar heroes who will eventually form the JSA! Oh yeah, AND: GAYS!

STORMWATCH:

I am as surprised as you are to see this here, but I am J'LOVING all the weirdness, roster changes, high concepts and backstabbery going on! Plus: gays!!

AQUAMAN:

Mera and Arthur are finally kicking ass in a beautifully-drawn and well-written comic.

THE WALKING DEAD:

# 98 upped the ante for us again, and as usual I am excited about what comes next in the comic that brought us the awesome TV series.

I ZOMBIE:

Allred's art is love as always; I j'adore the gang and will be sad to see the book end. Bonus: GAYS! Gavin and Spot better be having major sex before the end!!!

Shade

Daredevil

Huntess and Power Girl Worlds' Finest

Minutemen (may be my favorite now!!!)

Silk Spectre and Ozymandias tie for 5th. Both first issues were fantastic.

----------------------------

and I really enjoyed Hawkeye number 1.

Wolverine and the X-Men has slipped the past couple months with the all Warbird issue and the tiresome Avengers vs. X-Men tie in.

X-Men Legacy has not been bad lately! I buy it just for the story! (which is like once in a blue moon for me)

Shade has been quite a pleasant surprise, hasn't it? I wish more people were buying it and it could be an ongoing series in exactly the same format with rotating artists as Shade explores different cities and meets international heroes of the DCnU.

Glad to see Daredevil in your top 5! It's absolutely in mine in as well.
