Well? I collect almost every DC, Marvel and Crossgen book on the market (just not all the X books), so don't worry about that. I'm asking what Image, Dark Horse and other publishers are currently putting out books that you're loving right now?
Savage Dragon, the Goon (from Dark Horse), a few horror books by Dark Horse, Powers, Top Ten and other books always looks good, but usually I don't have the money to get them. But occasionally I do, and I'm always interested in seeing what else is good. What do you guys reccomend? Anyone read Savage Dragon? The Goon? Any Image? Any ABC? Warren Ellis books? Powers?
And I highly reccomend Negation and Sojourn from Crossgen, and Fables and Y: the Last Man from Vertigo!

If you are into horror you have to try IDW's line. The 30 Days of Night Annual 2004 just came out. Dark Days just finished up I believe but Return to Barrow is starting soon. And they are doing an adaption of Dawn of the Dead and Richard Matheson's I Am Legend. Their CSI books are pretty good too.
Other than those I think you already read all that I do. Except maybe Dork Towers and Nodwick. Those two should be on everyone's list.
Posted by Pov on :
Todd Nauck's WildGuard from Image has been excellent, and should be an ongoing after the Casting Call mini wraps up. David Mack's finally getting back to Kabuki with a new story arc starting soon, also published by Image. And Frank Cho's Liberty Meadows is one of my favorite books-- published bi-monthly by (you guessed it ) Image.
I get Tom Strong, TS's Terrific Tales and Promethea from ABC. I've also been enjoying the various ABC spin-off mini's SMAX and TERRA OBSCURA.
Posted by Lightning Lad on :
Terra Obscura is over though isn't it? And have we gotten confirmation yet of a WildGuard ongoing? I'd love it if they do.
I keep meaning to add Liberty Meadows to my list but I just have too many titles as it is now.
Posted by Pov on :
Drop some Marvels.
And Terra Obscura has been slated for a second mini, by the same creative team. Not sure when it's scheduled for release, though.
I'm pretty sure Todd N. was planning an ongoing after the line-up was decided in CC, and the success of the mini hopefully all but guarantees we'll get an ongoing. I'll have to check his site to see if he's updated, though...

I'd highly recommend picking up "Supreme Power" from J Michael Stracynski. It's loosely based on the Squadron Supreme (the JLA really, but it's Marvel so they use the Squad's names even though this isn't the same reality) and is one of those "realistic" versions of a superhero universe that's really well done. Look for the thread here in this forum to get more info on the book. I think a trade collecting the beginning of the series is due out soon as well.

I really don't buy that many Marvels. Supreme Power, Ultimate X-Men, The Ultimates, Iron Man (which has been good lately), FF and Exiles (which I should drop) are all that I can think of off the top of my head. What I really need to drop are the Superman titles, JLA and Batman.
Posted by Pov on :
I did drop Exiles (and Avengers) after Chuck Austen took over the writing. I'm picking up JLA for the Claremont/Byrne/Ordway arc, and haven't touched a core Bat- or S-book in years. Got Batman 615 for the Nightwing AR appearance, but that's it.
Posted by Lightning Lad on :
I jumped on the Loeb/Lee Batman and really enjoyed their run. The 100 Bullets team that took over after though. Ugh. Just not the same. I forgot that Avengers is on my list too but it could be another title dropped and not missed.
JLA, unless there is a dramatic improvement, will be gone after Claremont and Byrne have their way. Maybe I'll finally let go of the Superman titles after the current storyline finishes. Except Lee is coming on soon.
Arrgh! Maybe I'll just stop buying comics altogether and become a monk.
Fat chance!

Don't know if you are a Star Wars fan or not, but Darkhorse has some good things going on in the Galaxy Far Far Away. Some of it can be hit or miss though, so definitely wait for tpbs to be collected. I've enjoyed most of Ostrander's work...
As for me, the only must haves are Legion and Ultimate Spider-man (the tpbs only though). If you're reading those then you've got my interests covered. I put Exiles, Ultimate X-men, Batman, and Star Wars trades on my birthday and christmas wish lists... I've found that I really don't miss them.
Posted by minesurfer on :
A quick follow up... I would recommend the actual books over the comics as far as Star Wars is concerned. The Thrawn Trilogy (by Timothy Zahn) is a good place to start (they pick up about 10 years after Return of the Jedi). Very, very entertaining reads.
Posted by Director Lad on :
The two books that I would recommend would be Powers and Planetary. Both offer an interesting twist on existing fictional realities. Powers is a "realistic" super-hero book, showing a world in which the super-heroes are like most other celebrities: doing endorsements, giving interviews to fan mags, etc. The story focuses on the cops of the city in question, though, so the perspective is rather different, too. The characters are great, and if the dialogue is a bit typically Brian-Michael-Bendis-y, well, I can handle that.
Planetary is a bit like the "X-Files," only good. The Planetary team goes around the world investigating strange occurances. Most of the events, stories or characters are based on characters from the pulps of the early twentieth century, so we've seen analogues of Tarzan, Doc Savage, the Shadow, etc. There have also been references to various DC and Marvel super-heroes. The main bad guys are essentially the FF gone very, very bad. Basically, imagine the Marvel universe if the FF acquired phenominal cosmic power (instead of stretching, etc) and used their powers to prevent the appearance of many subsequent heroes. Planetary is nominally set in the same universe as the Authority, but it seems to have a life of it's own. It's extremely entertaining and I can't recommend it enough.

Marvel - Runaways ABC - Top Ten - get it in trades and they the regular series when it returns for season 2! Image - Noble Causes - i've gotten a few of these issues and its pretty good. at least check out the first mini-series and see what you think... Image - Sleeper - everybody seems to like this but i haven't tried it yet... Top Cow - Wanted - pretty good so far... old Authority - Everything up to the current incarnation was pretty good. Check out the Ellis Stormwatch run too
Oh and I like this little DC book called Legion too

Wow, thanks for the response everyone! I'll try to get to everyone in this reply !
Scott: thanks for the info! I love horror comics, but don't really get to read much outside of Vertigo and the occasional Dark Horse! I've never picked up any of those, so maybe I'll give them a shot. I've never heard of Dork Towers though, what's it about?
Oh, and Iron Man is a great, great title right now, I higly reccomend it. Out of all of Marvel's "mainstream hero" titles, I'd say Iron Man is the best, ahead of both Fanstastic Four and Avengers, which aren't too shabby (I'll wait on commenting on Austen's run on Avengers though). Pick it up, it's great political drama!
Pov: that's the second time you've reccomended Liberty Meadows to me, so I'm thinking of trying it out. With reccomendations from Stu, He Who Wanders and others on this board, it must be good! Plus, I know you have good taste, I've seen your collection !
I've never tried any of the ABC line, but I love Watchman, From Hell, Swamp Thing and League of Extraordinary Gentleman from Moore, so I don't know why I've waited! I guess I should give them a try too...any One in particulur I should get first?
Wildguard is another one I've heard is good, but I always forget to look for it at the comic book store.
Drake: I'm currently reading Supreme Power and loving it! A very well written title, with a very eerie feel to it that is rarely seen in comics without outright nudity and violence. I can't get enough of it!
Minesurfer- I've never really collected many Star Wars comics (although I'm a big fan of the movies), but my little brother is a major, major Star Wars nut. So thanks for the recommendation, I'm always trying to get him to read more comics, so this might be a good idea!
Director Lad- Hm, I'm glad that you replied, I've heard such good things about both Powers and Planetary. Powers looks very cool, I picked up two issues (15 and 16 maybe?) where the big blond hero in white dies and his wife kills herself. Very interesting, but I've never had the chance to go through them all. My comic shop owner recommended buying them in trades though, he said like most Bendis stories, you're just not getting enough bang for your buck each issue, but it's a great story as a whole. What do you think?
I've heard good things on Planetary, but I didn't realize there was a cool FF connection like that. I might pick this up...
Monkey Eater- Top Ten is another book I've heard good things about. I'm not too sure what the premise is, but along with Pov's recommendation, I might give the ABC books a try. The tough decision is whether I should hunt down back issues or go for a trade though.
I picked up the first few issues of Noble Causes and found it very entertaining, but my pull lists were getting so big that I didn't have the money to continue, and the last issue was like five bucks I think. I was thinking of grabbing it, now that Marvel and DC finished up a lot of their minis. I'll have to decide on impulse in the comic book store.
Wanted is a book I'm unsure about. Mark Millar really. I can't stand the guy. I think Ultimate X-Men and Ultimates are the two comics I hate the most right now, the two I'm most likely going to cancel, mainly because of him. But with it being a character that I don't have an invested love for, I might be able to stomach it .
I've checked out some of Ellis' run on Stormwatch (in Barnes n' Noble one morning) and liked what I read, but Authority is always another book I forget about. Maybe I should grab those, I'm thinking the trades are the best bet.
Guys, great job so far! That's a whole bunch of recommendations that I can follow through on! I'll let you know when I pick a book up (depending on how big the pile is each week)! All I can say is more, more, more! Anyone else have anything they recommend?
I really would like to know if anyone reads the Goon and Savage Dragon, I always think about picking them up, but never do. I've heard good things, though. I think Duke gets the Goon, I'll wait until he responds.
And in return, if anyone has any questions about any DC or Marvel title, fire away! I can give you recommendations on any of them- I get them all! I'm anxiously awaiting Lee's Superman for one thing, and JLA does look like Byrne's best art in YEARS. Like I said, Iron Man is good, but also try New Mutants, Daredevil, Superman/Batman, Willingham on Robin and Birds of Prey!
Thanks guys (now who can guess how many times I misspelled 'recommend' in this post, I know at least a few, because I've done it with both one 'c' and two !
Posted by Pov on :
Des, you can get the ABC books in trades... I highly recommend getting the two Top Ten TPB's. Check out the first Promethea trade and see if it's your cup o' joe.

Anytime Des. If you'd like I could send you 30 Days of Night and Dark Days, the sequel, on CD. Just say the word and I'll send them your way.
Dork Towers is a book that started out as a strip comic in Dragon Magazine. Its about a group of gaming/computer/comic geeks. Quite fun. You can check out their jabs at Return of the King here.

Oh, now I know what you're talking about! My brother (the twenty-one year old that was once called "Kruel") collects Dragon Magazine once in awhile, and I've read those strips. Very, very funny! We were really big into D&D growing up, and although we haven't played in years, he still picks up all the new stuff when ever he gets extra money (he was DM for from like age eight to sixteen, so he'll probably never grow out of it )! Very funny strip!
Thanks for the offer of sending me the horror comics, but I already feel like you're sending me a ton with the "Simple Life" ! I wish I had something that I could send back your way Scooter !

Take a look at Wildcats v3.0 from Wildstorm - available in a couple of trades now. Once of the only comics that I luuuurve _every_ week. Especially the issues that are all corporate boardroom stuff and geopolitical ramifications...
(No, I'm not kidding.)

The other title\I'm gonna hype is Stormwatch: Team Achilles.
It's about the United Nations rapid reaction force that deals with superhuman threats that are threatening the stability of the globe.
It's full of militaty fun, big explosions, mockery of Marvel characters and exelent writing. Check it out.

LIBERTY MEADOWS – damned FUNNIEST thing on the market in the last 10 years
FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE JUSTICE LEAGUE – only JL book I’ll touch!
USAGI YOJIMBO – you might wanna get ahold of one of the collections for starters, although there are a lot of great single-issue stories
TOM STRONG – consistently great writing & art, it’s almost tragic the LEGION lost Chris Sprouse back when
MOONIE THE STARBABE – Nick Cuti, the creator of E-MAN, strikes again! With art by Dave Simons, a really “cute” sexy sci-fi book
…and of course, if you like some gay porn with your superheroes…
STORMBOY (available from Amazon Books and better gay book stories)

The LIBERTY MEADOWS Sourcebook! Sounds like a good starting point for any newbies out there--- Check it out!
Posted by Fat Cramer on :
Liberty Meadows seems to be one of these books people love or loathe. I keep meaning to pick up some issues but other stuff gets in the way....next visit to the store, promise!
Cobie, if you like ancient history, you should enjoy Age of Bronze - another Image book, and there's a TPB coming out in May as well. It's the story of the Trojan War, a real page turner and it's gotten me reading the original (in Robert Fagles' translation!), which is a lot more accessible now that I've gotten clear who's who from the comic book. And people think the Legion has a large cast....
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
I'd forgotten about the Age of Bronze, I've heard GREAT things about it. And since I love ancient history, have read Homer's epics numerous times and plan to dedicate my life to ancient history, this should be a fun read !
I definately will give this a look I think! Large casts are always a plus too!
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
I plan to go the comic book store today and grab a title or two from this thread (depending on how much the rest of the pile is, remember that I get almost every DC and Marvel )!
I'll let you know how it goes!

Speaking as someone who loved Homer's epics, SOLD!
I don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting this!
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
I would have grabbed it today, but it's $3.50 an issue, so I'm waiting til next week. I'm thinking of grabbing #1 if they have it, if not, I'll grab the earliest issue I can find.
I meant to grab some new comics today, but my pile was too large already (after picking up Human Target #2 and #3). But I did see Wildstorm 3.0, Liberty Meadows and Tom Strong, all of which I'm willing to give a shot next week! DC's New Frontier has taken a big portion of my budget up, but I think it's worth it so far!
Planetary looked good, but both the last two issues seem to be too much art with no dialogue, so I was hesistant about them this week. It's all on a spur of the moment deal for me
Posted by Lightning Lad on :
Cobbie, my offer still stands. I'll send you all of Planetary and Powers so you can try them out before adding them to your pull list.
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
Scooter, you're the best! I'll gladly accept your offer, but I have to try and think of a way to repay you! Let me know if you can come up with anything !
Powers and Planetary sound great, I want to check them out definately! (I just don't know if it's enough bang for your buck)
Thanks Scott

I'm not sure which books you read exactly, but here's a list of the stuff I'd pimp:
1. Liberty Meadows (Image ongoing): Basic idea: Liberty Meadows is an animal sanctuary and it involves a cast of vets & talking animals done ala newspaper strip format. It's just plain, flat-out fun! I actually think the bi-monthly publishing sked works in its favor.
2. Abadazad (Crossgen ongoing?): Basic idea: Kid loses a brother mysteriously. Five years later, she winds up in the fictional world of Abadazad. I know that sounds shallow, but you really have to read the book first before making any calls. The story's really topnotch, the artwork's fantastic and it's not too late to get on baord. I just bought #1 this week.
3. Supreme Power (Marvel ongoing): Basic idea: redux of Marvel's JLA-ripoff Squadron Supreme. It's a nice fusion of super-powers & hidden agendas.
4. Love Fights (Oni Press ongoing): Basic idea: it's a love story told in the backdrop of a super-powered metropolis ala Powers but with humor, romance & super-hero-on-the-side action. It's a funny book, with some nice insights on the comics industry as well as comics itself.
5. Rex Mundi (Image ongoing): Basic idea: In an Earth where Catholicism rules, the Inquisition is still around, a scroll that may lead to the Holy Grail is lost and a man sets out to retrieve it, learning things & facing dangher along the way. It's another hidden gem out there with an engaging story & great art.
6. Chosen (Dark Horse 3-issue mini): Basic idea: a kid discovers he's the reincarnated Christ. What does he do for an encore? A really great read with gorgeous art. Millar, for all his pomp, actually manages a decent story.

OK, picked up Wildcats 3.0, the first book I've attempted so far.
Not bad at all, a very crisp story with good pacing and very interesting views on the world. This seems like a good premise, I might have to pick up some more. This definately appears to be Casey's best work I've ever read, I really like the way his main character states his views on the world.
Up next: Age of Bronze and Liberty Meadows (and mabye Tom Strong or Planetary)!

Currently, Sojourn and Supreme Power are fighting it out for the best book out there. I would put Abadazad on the list - but only one issue so far, which was excellent.
Sojourn has a good story, but might have the best artwork I have ever seen in a comic.

Maybe we should start a "What a great guy Scott is!" thread. I remember about a year ago when he burned the Legion episode of Superman on CD for me. I watched this in my Legion pajamas dancing the klodney. Here's to Scott!
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
Here's an update on some other titles I picked up:
Liberty Meadows (the one with the Cow on the cover): hysterical. My favorite character is the bullfrog I think, and I thought the whole Cow story was great! I'm definately interested in this title now, and might start buying it regularly.
Wanted: Not bad. Actually, pretty good, and pretty interesting. I'm prone to hate Millar's work before hand, and was actually pleasantly surprised by this. I think I'm going to pick up the next issue.
Age of Bronze: I picked up issue #2, and I'm not sure what I think of it yet. It was OK, but it wasn't great. But this was Paris's story, and now I'm wishing I just picked up the latest issue off the newstand. I might give it a second shot, especially because of my love of Ancient history.
And I'm still getting around to reading the comics you gave me disc, Scott!

A housewarming gift? For me? You needn't go to all that trouble to send stuff all the way to OZ... especially as hopefully I'll be making the trip to the US this July - fingers crossed!
And Cobie - Wanted is pretty good from what we've seen. I little too slick for it's own good maybe ( ), but carrying some great ideas. I love the explanation of how the villains have managed to smooth over thier existance. And Wildcats is one of the few titles that never fails to surprise and not disappoint me week after week.

Seeing the change of opinion regarding Mark Millar, I'd also like to recommend CHOSEN, a 3-issue mini. It's an attempt to tell the story of a reincarnated Jesus in current times. The story's pretty good with fantastic art & colors! The 1st issue sold out but the 2nd printing should be available at stores. The name of the publisher escapes me at the moment...

A question about the ABC line:
What comics are currently ongoing, which ones are mini-series, and which ones are the best? I know Promethia is supposed to be good, and I'm thinking of picking it up, but what is the premise of all the others?
Oh, and which ones are written by Alan Moore?
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
Bump for my previous question!
And Igee, I read a really good review of Chosen by Tony Isabella, so I'm considering grabbing an issue of this if possible. Between Miller's Spiderman title and Wanted, I'm surprised at myself for how much I'm enjoying his work! He still left me cold with Ultimates #13 though, but some are saying that Chosen might be the best thing he's done yet...
Posted by Lightning Lad on :
I know Top Ten and Tom Strong were two of his ABC titles. Tomorrow Stories was as well I think. Of course the LOEG was one of ABC's titles too. And as I understand it, they are all coming to an end with Moore's 'retirement' from writing comics.
And Cobbie I still have the Planetary/Powers/Wildcats 3.0 disc to mail to you. Its ready to go, just haven't had time to get to the post office lately.
Posted by Outdoor Miner on :
Last I heard, there may be a chance that one or two of the titles would keep going with different creative teams.
Moore's "retirement" doesn't extend to the LOEG, as I recall. He has plans for more minis.
Posted by Pov on :
Promethea ends with #32 (planned... the number 32 ties in extensively with Moore's story). Gene Ha is still working on the artwork for The 49'ers (Top 10) special that's been in the pipeline since the initial Top 10 series ended . And a second mini for Terra Obscura (a Tom Strong spin-off )has been announced, with the same creative team as the first.

CK, hope you were able to get Chosen. No. 2 came out about 2 weeks ago (methinks). Some posters over at Millarworld are just anxious to see how he'll wrap it up. Millar starts out really strong but has been known to fizzle out towards the end. I hope this isn't the case as CHOSEN has a lot of strengths going for it.
Tell me what you think

I haven't picked up Chosen yet, but I think I'll give it a try. I expected the worst from Wanted, but really enjoyed it.
Altough I initially excluded Crossgen titles in my first post of this thread, I have to reccomend "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" to everyone! Great comic so far, very fun and entertaining with likeable characters. Some funny stuff in the first two issues.
I hope LoEG continues on, those stories have been great (and shocking!) so far. I'd really like to see him bring in Sherlock Holmes now, after alluding to him still being alive earlier.

There are some *really* great reccomendations all thread on non-Marvel/DC books. I've picked up a few here and there over the last few months, and will probably do that more now that I'll have a steady income.
Some goodies (some of which are cancelled):
Liberty Meadows, Age of Bronze, Wildcats 3.0, Top Ten, the Goon, the ABC books, Planetary, and many more.
I'd like to hear how everyone is enjoying these independent titles these days too!
