Marvel is launching six new titles in March, 2004. Five of them will be on-going, with the sixth being the already discussed here Avengers vs. Thunderbolts.

The five series are:

Iron Fist
She-Hulk
Captain America and The Falcon
Alpha Flight
Cable/Deadpool

I'll go on the record as saying not one of these titles will see their first anniversary. Again instead of focusing on their current batch, like keeping The Inhumans around by promoting it more, they spend more time and resources on a batch of, in my opinion, crap. The Avengers/Thunderbolts mini is the only one that sounds remotely interesting to me.

If not for the fact that I find both characters extremely uninteresting, I'd consider picking up Cap/Falcon just to get a bit more writing from the always wonderful PRIEST.

Priest 4 Prez! [Wink]

Meanwhile ... (to use the cliche)

CrossGen is imploding, cancelling nine titles, and that's most of the non-superhero traffic these days.

We seem to be getting more superheroes, whether they're needed -- or well-done -- or not.

I'll go on record as saying all five ongoings will REACH the year (i.e. the 12-issue mark), but at least two of them won't get beyond that. Saying ALL of them won't make it is too pessimistic though, since NM, Venom, Mystique and Runaways from the last batch are all going to hit at least 18. And all of them have a pre-existing fanbase out there, even if to varying extents.

I think Alpha Flight has the built-in fan base to keep the book going if done well. Of course, who knows, if it is Lobdell doing the writing. That man runs hot and cold worse than my shower.

I was fond of Lobdell's writing on X-Men when Jim Lee was in there. I seem to remember him writing a good Beast.

I have to agree with Scott to some degree. Why can't I get Thor, Iron Man and Cap to all be phenominally good at the same time? Why?

I'll definately give Priest's book a try, I love his writing too. And I think Iron Fist is cool...

Besides Avengers/Thunderbolts though, these books are going to have a rough go at it to make it to year two...

Of the titles listed, I'm most interested in "Iron Fist", but I'll check out "Cap and Falcon" and "Alpha Flight" to see what they're about.

Cable/Deadpool's making it at least to #18, Cap/Falcon's making it to #14 (with a relaunch as Falcon in the works), so that's two, plus She-Hulk's getting relaunched too [Smile] Pity about AF going with #12 tho. [Frown]

Two and a half out of 5 Scooter. Not great [Razz] (whereas I got 4/5 on reaching 12 [Smile] )

Nobody betting on She-Hulk? Has it been launched as an on-going or a limited series? I'd give that one a year... now tell me somebody atrocious is writing it....

Posted by Pov on :

Nope, it'll still be Dan Slott in the writer's chair, I'm sure. It's been hands-down one of Marvel's most entertaining books in its first run; hopefully it picks up where it left off and the break Slott & Pelletier are taking for the GLA mini doesn't kill any of the critical buzz SHE-HULK's generated... [Eek!] I'm hoping it's an on-going, but I can live with 12-issue "seasons" if it keeps the creative team together.

Funny, when Scooter originally posted this thread, I would have laughed in his face, thrown my drink on him and called him a stupid moron if he had said, "Lash, I'll bet SHE-HULK will be your favorite comic!" And then I would have run like HELL!!! [Wink] [Big Grin]

ALPHA FLIGHT was amusing, and I'll miss it, but it was no SHE-HULK. Can't wait for V2, but I am hoping Marvel will use the time off to create a big, buzzy sales-push for the relaunch!

Funny enough, I would never have thought about buying She-Hulk if it wasn't for Rhino and Lash (and then we brought Pov and others on! [Smile] ). It has quickly become one of my favorite Marvel comics, and I'm thrilled it's getting a volume 2. Like Pov, I'll take a Dan Slott written She-Hulk in anyway I can get it, so the seasonal approach doesn't phase me at all.

As for some others:

Iron Fist was so bad,I cancelled it at issue #2. I'll never get those $6 back.

Captain America and the Falcon utterly failed for me. I love Priest's writing, love Cap and love the Falcon, and hell, I love JJJ and Joe Robertson and Modok...but it just didn't work for me.

(Psst.. Pov. She was being sarcastic, talking as if the 2004 SH1 wasn't out yet [Razz] )

Pelletier is NOT doing SH v2. The artist hasn't been announced yet, but it's confirmed it'll be someone new to the book.

Perhaps Reboot is just being gallant and offering me an elegant way out! But I must admit, I didn't look at the date of LL's post and I pay so little attention! to Marvel books that I figured this was a new list and the She-Hulk entry referred to the series continuing as part 2, all new stories!.... (no, I don't read all the threads here.... :appropriately embarrassed smiley:

Well, it gave me a real good laugh at myself anyways! And I do hope they keep Slott on the book. Good writers seem harder to come by than good artists.

Well, pooh. So why the delay at all? Unless they've got Frank Cho working on it now that he's done with Shanna... [Love]

No, strike that. I want him to get LIBERTY MEADOWS back on track, dammit! [Yes]

Ooooh, goodie, on the bright side, we get to speculate on the new artist!! So, who would rock on She-Hulk V2?

The Dodsons proved they could handle humor and sexiness on Harley Quinn. Their Adam Hughes-ish art might cause a big buzz for the relaunch!

Or perhaps Bobo will return to the series he launched with his wonderfully exotic art? I thought he had the COOLEST takes on characters like Gladiator, Dr. Strange and The Thing.

Olivier Coipel is currently series-less, which is a no-no for a "Marvel Young Gun". He has previous experience with Shulkie on AVENGERS. 8 months would give him a mammoth head-start, which he would require.

Posted by Reboot on :

Coipel = House of M artist.

Bobillo = prior artist, not new.

Dodsons = have Evil That Men Do to finish (apparently - don't faint - Smith has ACTUALLY handed the scripts in).

Greg Horn = Cover Artist for She-Hulk v2 [Razz]

Coipel on House of M? I was considering getting House of M. Now I definitely WILL get it.

Okay, then.... lessee...

John Byrne has previous She-Hulk experience, and his gauranteed 18-month run on Doom Patrol will be nearly at an end in 8 months... [Wink]

Has Greg Land been attached to anything following Phoenix Endsong? He's a Marvel Exclusive now and draws hot babes. Though I can't see him scoring well with some of the subtleties in She-Hulk like Bobo and Pelletier did.

Speculating is fun and all, but I wish Pelletier was coming back...

He'll have the new DEMON ongoing to keep him busy, at least for the next few months. He's also on ACTION COMICS with Gail Simone.

Oh, here's the SH v2 #1 cover. Not that anyone here would be interested [Razz]

C'mon, October!

Wow. [Elastic Lad] [Drool] [Love]

Not a knock on Mr. Mayhew's coverwork for the current run, but... just WOW.

I hope Greg Horn is the regular cover artist for the new run. 'Nuff Said.

I hear they split the total number of DP issues sold each month into two stacks in Paul Levitz's office, run a pole accross them and have a limbo contest.

This month's winner was Oberon... [Roll Eyes] [LOL]

Wow, what a cover! What else has Greg Horn done?

Posted by ferroboy on :

He did all the covers to EMMA FROST. The first few are sizzling hot! The only problem was that they didn't even remotely fit the tone of the book.

And Pov -- did you mean the total number of unsold DP issues?

Posted by Pov on :

I was being silly. I was talking total # issues sold last month, split into two piles. still tall enough that even -I- could limbo under, I'm sure. [Wink]

But GIVE it a couple of months... even Oberon will need a chiropractor after attempting -that- limbo. [LOL]

Posted by MLLASH on :

Yeah, what I especially like about Horn's She-Hulk cover is that it hints at the humorous content. Too many of Mayhew's were mere poster-shots (though not all of them).
