Anyone going to give this title a try? It looks like fun. The creator, Todd Nauck, did a couple of Legion issues (Legends of the Legion #1 and #4, one story in Secret Files #1, Legionnaires #56, and a backup story in LSH #102). You can see a preview of 5 pages at Newsarama Posted by DrakeB3003 on :
I plan on picking it up -- I've actually been to the WildGuard website a bunch of times to vote for the member I want to see on the team (last I checked, it was still open and you can vote once a day).
Posted by Poverty Lad on :
This slipped under my radar for preordering. I have to hope my local CBS ordered some because it's a #1. Todd's a nice guy-- I've had e-mail contact a few times, and traded posts with him on the old YJ boards. I definitely wanna give this a look-see and possibly continue to support his career. There was a full-page ad in the back of Liberty Meadows 33, but it's in black n' white. I'll have to visit the WG site, even if I don't vote...
Posted by Poverty Lad on :
Just checked the article and preview pages at Newsarama --thanks, Scott! I think I'm gonna like this...
Posted by Star Boy on :
I'll definately be checking this out - Nauck's style is a hoot & the idea should prove to be a funny spin on the current reality fad.
At last - reality 'programming' I can be interested in!

So are y'all voting? I've been voting for Patrol Man a bunch, but I think he's going to be on the team regardless.

I really shouldn't be picking up a new series but I may just give this one a try. What's the web address? If we can still vote, I'd like to see who's there to vote for.

You can just go to Wildguard.com Posted by Lightning Lad on :
Hmmm. I like a few of them but I had to go with Freezerburn. Cool power, combining both ice and fire manipulation. But I bet this is who gets Jeff's vote:
Strong-bot Powers/abilities: Super strength, flight Did you know? Strong-bot is catergorized as a Grand Thunder MechaMan robot. He does not transform.

It does seem like a lot of fun, though I haven't been keeping up with the web site. I'll have to run over and vote.

I like Aqua-Chica, for the offensive name alone, Jun-Go, b/c he's kinda ferally sexy, and Shrubling, b/c she's a boy-crazy plant girl.
What a neat idea, I hadn't heard of this until I read this thread.

I'm gonna check this out this afternoon after work, when I have more time. But I have to say, the no-transforming aspect REALLY takes away from the coolness factor... we'll see.

No spoilers, really-- I like the feel of the book. It's a mix of the AI-type tryouts, with the RW-type narrative interviews. Good art, fun story with some laugh-out-loud spots-- I'll be checking out issue 2.
AND VOTING FOR RED ROVER!

Posted by Greybird on :
Todd Nauck was at my local comics store (east suburban L.A.) earlier this evening. Dozens lined up for autographs and quick-drawn sketches. He was entirely affable and thrilled with the attention.
Metropolis Comics had many in the throng under the age of 12 tonight, enthusiastic about meeting this artist/writer. I was glad. We don't see enough kids in these stores any more.
I didn't buy an issue (I have six titles I'm getting now, more than I'd ever thought I'd do), but did enjoy hearing him speak in an impromptu manner about his art. He noted that his first professional comics position came less than a year after graduating from art school, and that he's felt blessed by great good fortune. I'd have to agree, but his evident craft has also earned it.
Posted by Bevis on :
I'll certainly be getting it today. I really like Todd Nauck's art and the preview pages I've seen made me laugh a lot. Normally I don't go for manga influenced art at all but for some reason I really like what Todd does. I think possibly it's because while it is definately influenced by manga he aslo has very much his own style as well. Plus he's always come across as a really nice guy. He always used to post over at the YJ boards and was clearly hugely enthusiastic about comics and encouraging for people who wanted to get involved as well. That kind of enthusiasm, the interaction with the readers and his willingness to give feedback on people's work if they asked for it was something that I admire very much in comics creators.
Also after having worked with Peter David for however many years on YJ (55 issues, so we must be talking nearly five years I guess) would make me think he's probably learnt a fair bit about writing as well. Simply because he's so nice I'm hoping that he's one artist that manages to move into writing sucessfully as well.
Posted by Bevis on :
Got it yesterday and I really liked it. It's not ground breaking but it's a fun story, some great jokes (loved Wandering Eye's audition) and Todd seems to be able to write as well as draw. Plus he's got a really good design sense. Most of the costumes look so much better than other new characters in the DCU or Marvel or wherever (even the ones that are *supposed* to be a bit silly are cool. Like Red Rover. Silly concept, cool design for some reason).
I've not voted for who I want in the team yet though. I know four of the five members are already fixed but I have no idea whether they're included in the public vote or not. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Ignacia and Jun-Go are already part of the team simply because the first issue focused on them more than most of the other characters, but you never know.
As for who I might vote for? Well I like Shingle too because visually he's very cool (and I'm assuming he's Shingle after the bits of rock rather than the disease. ) and Night Harpy because she looks very cool. Plus I like Jun-Go coz he's pretty sexy and Toughlon because his costume, despite being silly, is also kinda sexy. Who can resist a big hunky man wearing a high cut leotard? I think I might wait until the next issue to decide though to see if any of the other characters I like get a chance to show their character a bit more.
Posted by Star Boy on :
Got it as well today - and loved it. Nauck's slightly goofy art was a perfect match for the cheesy, tongue-in-cheek material. The depth that he's managed to achieve in one issue alone make me think of a light-hearted 'Top Ten', if only for the 'background' detail, if not the subject matter.
Posted by DrakeB3003 on :
It's shaping up to be a fun book. The first issue just reminded me of the fun Legion try-outs used to be -- especially Segmented Man, when he threw his *head* at one of the judges!
Posted by Caleb on :
Hmmm, while I LOVE the artwork, I'll have to see about the story. Since 4 characters have already been chosen and only the fifth character is actually going to be voted on by the public... I would bet that Jun-go, Ignacia, Red Rover and Snapback will make it on the team since they got such a spotlight in the first issue. But Wannabe was also spotlighted pretty hard, so....
And why are DC and Marvel not falling over themselves to get Todd Nauck signed? He had a 55 issue un-interrupted run with two extra-sized specials thrown in and his artwork is great.
Posted by DrakeB3003 on :
I also wonder which ones have already been selected, but I think Red Rover and Jun-go are a bit redundant -- the team should have more firepower than that. But who knows?
Oh, and did anyone else notice one scene where it looked like Brainiac was talking to B.I.O.N.? (there was also someone there who kinda looked like Saturn Girl in her pink bikini -- since the legion has had so many members with so many looks it's almost hard not to make someone resemble some Legionnaire at some point)
Posted by Poverty Lad on :
Thanks for mentioning the "Legion" appearances, Drake-- I kept forgetting to...

As they say: "What goes around, comes around."
I figured the fine folks at my store owed me a favor. On a number of occasions in the past, they've forgotten to pull titles that I had on my subscription list, with the result that the issue sold out by the time I got to the store, and I was left empty-handed. (Thanks to terrific folks like Lash though, I've managed to get my grubby paws on some of those titles, like Wolverine/Doop #2. )
When I got to the store today, there were no more copies of Wildguard: Casting Call #1 on the shelves. I asked the guy at the counter, and he said they'd sold out, and that pretty much every store in town had sold out.
HOWEVER... he remembered me from before (when I made a stink about the store's failure to put Wolverine/Doop #2 in my box) and offered me the copy they'd pulled for one of their customers who hadn't been by to pick up his subscription titles for over three months. Nice, huh? It's about TIME those guys did me a good turn!
Long story short -- Scott, I got you a copy. Just let me know (e-mail, etc.) where you want it sent -- and when you want it sent, since it might be easier to direct it to your new home after you get there!

Posted by STU on :
My store actually did something right for once, and not only back-ordered #2, but also ordered a reasonable number of copies of #3 -- enough for both Scott and myself.
Posted by Bevis on :
Heh heh, #3 was one of the high points of what was a bloody good week for comics (Wonder Woman #198, Lucifer #44, Birds of Prey #61 and Legion: SF&O). I'm loving Nauck's story and art and the fact that he's managed to make so many of the characters have defined personalities and powers is a huge credit to his skill. Sure there are some who we've barely seen and some who've had way more development but that's sort of inevitable with a cast of... well, I guess a hundred or so.
As for who is going to be in the final five.... oooh. Well Jun-Go, Ignacia and Red Rover (who is my fave) seem to be pretty damn likely to be in there since they've had the most screen time. Strongbot and Toughlon seem to have had a fair amount of screen time too so I wouldn't count either of them out. Four members of the team we know have been pre-picked so we should be able to guess who they are. I reckon it's two men and two women, so Jun-go, Red Rover, Ignacia and... ooh, maybe Wannabe. Loved her having a change of costume. That made me laugh. Or maybe Astro Girl, but her first appearance was a little suspicious.
Oh, and I *loved* Jun-Go's origin. he he he he. Bet Nauck had a whale of a time drawing those couple of pages. And what's with Strongbot? He's gonna be really weeny isn't he? Weeny but strong.
Posted by Bevis on :
Just been thinking and I think possibly Feezerburn might be one of the pre-picked four. He's not had nearly as much screen time as Jun-Go, Ignacia or Red Rover, but he does still stick out from the crowd. Although I guess he'd also be duplicating Igancia's powers which would make her redundant since he also has cold powers. Hmmm....
And we don't even find out till February. oooh, this whole waiting thing is so unfair.

I didn't go to the signing -- still beset with my flu aftereffects. (And my brother's ... roommates, y'know.) If I'd heard from anyone around here who'd have gone, though, would have dragged my bones outta here to the store to meet 'em.
Nauck was friendly and open about his career on his earlier visit -- I posted notes on page 2 of this thread. They expected crowds in a smallish shop, more than before, so last night they were officially ending the appearance one hour before closing time, to allow for chatting and finishing sketches.
Posted by icefire on :
Guess Jung-Go won't make the cut now will he???
Posted by DrakeB3003 on :
Good riddance to bad loin cloth, imo. More interesting was Strongbot's real appearance -- he looks much better stripped down. Since my pick Patrol Man most likely won't make it, I'm hoping for Strongbot and Astro Girl. Ignacia seems like a shoe-in though I hope she gets new clothes -- even if she changes into different kinds of street outfits during the series that would be cool.
Posted by icefire on :
Yeah! I think Ignacia is in but I can't figure out who the others will be!!!!
Posted by Bevis on :
The only one that I'm still sure of really is Ignacia. Just the fact that she's been the focus of the series so far in a lot of ways means I'd be surprised if she isn't picked. But then again I didn't expect Jun-Go to be a baddie either so you never know. Even if she doesn't make the grade though she's bound to be a supporting character still. I wouldn't be surprised if quite a few characters who don't make the final five still stick around to a certain extent.
I've just got my fingers crossed that red Rover still makes it in as well. I suspect he might be in the pre-picked four already but couldn't say for certain.
Posted by STU on :
Even though he barely did a thing up until this last issue, I liked the heroic efforts put forth by Travel Agent (at the urging of Ignacia). Plus, I like the name; I like teleporters; and I think the idea of a super-hero running around in a sport coat, vest, and glasses is kind of neat.

OK, so #5 is out and we're down to twelve contestants, four of whom are going to be on the team (plus the wild card fifth member who could be anyone).
I'm so loving this series. Todd Nauck is obviously having huge amounts of fun with the premis but is also coming up with a really great story as well. I had assumed that it was mostly going to be a sort of pastich of TV talent shows, which would have worn thin very quickly, but by actually concentrating more on superhero adventures he's managed to keep my interest well and truly up and also create a whole load of great characters.
So who's going to make the cut? Well I still think that Ignacia and Red Rover are on the team for sure (although I was the same about Jun-Go so I could be completely and utterly wrong).
Who's left? Lili-Hammer, Freezerburn, Strong Bot, Toughlon, Shrubling, Conductra, Snapback, American Idol, Asro-Girl (I think that's her name) and Exploding Girl (um, again I think that's her name). I kinda hope Lili-Hammer makes it on the team just because of her fabulous comedy accent. A very silly joke but it still made me laugh all through the last issue. Plus it's always good to have a bit of tension on a team.
Freezerburn I really like and he has very cool powers but he's really not had as much screen time as some of the other characters so he might not get in. Still I think he's more likely than Astro-Girl, Exploding Girl and American Idol who have really only been background characters so far. Apart from that wierd bit with Astro-Girl a few issues back on the alien ship where she kind of didn't seem to know about the whole casting call thing. Might be something more to her there. Conductra has been fairly background too, but I do like her a lot.
Snapback I think could well be on the team as well. He's had a fair amount of character development, and Strong-bot has too. Dammit, I just don't know.
I'm gonna make a guess at the four members from these twelve though and say Ignacia, Red Rover, Lili-Hammer and ..... Freezerburn. But I could be completely wrong.
As for the fifth member... well it could be almost anyone. I quite liked Shingle and thought he had a pretty cool power to boot. Another four weeks to wait though. Bugger.
By the way, anyone know if this is going to be an on-going after the Casting Call mini finishes? I do hope so.
Posted by STU on :
I loved the interchange between Lily Hammer and American Icon:
"Don't let jealousy make you the bad girl on the block."
"Why dohn't I jüst knahck your blahck ahff?!"
"That would be unamerican."
. . .
"Ünd who wears their cahstüme all the time?!?"

Ooh, and the little 'Scrubs' bit as well. That made me snort out loud (with laughter of course).

I'm pretty certain there's going to be an on-going WILDGUARD series after Casting Call wraps up. I'll have to look in on Todd's site for any news; I'm kinda confused about his schedule, as he continues to work on the Teen Titans Go! book-- at least, number 5 is solicited with him as artist. But yes, I agree... it'd be a shame if Wildguard didn't continue. So much fun!

Those two comments pretty much sum up my feelings while reading the book!
I have a feeling one of the characters we've been getting to know if going to end up sacrificing themselves before this is over (Ignacia maybe?). I'm pulling for Strongbot now that he's trimmed down. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for Patrol Man, but I don't think he even got any lines, so that's a big longshot.
Posted by STU on :
What are Patrol Man's powers?
I like both Ignacia and Freezerburn, but I don't think they're going to have two characters on the team who both have fire powers (even though one of them has other powers as well).
I wonder whether the "stats" shown in this issue were based at all on the actual voting...

Flight, energy projection, enhanced strength. Not too exciting, but I like the way he looks and the fact that he was once part of an intergalactic police force.

Todd has announced plans on upcoming Wildguard projects. From today's Comics Continuum:
quote:With the sixth and final issue of Image Comics' WildGuard: Casting Call in stores on Wednesday, creator Todd Nauck told The Continuum to look for more WildGuard comics later this year.
A one-shot later this year will be followed by a four-issue mini-series.
"In the one-shot, it's a chance for the readers to try to get to know the five characters better," Nauck said. "People seem to be enjoying the book and I want to keep telling stories with the characters."
There will also be a trade paperback collecting Casting Call, and Nauck said that, with extras, it will be 200 pages.

****SPOILERS FOR FINAL LINEUP**** I was a bit disappointed that strong-bot didn't get on the team. After it became clear my initial choice patrol man was't getting any face time in the book, strong-bot became my fav after he got rid of the bulky facade. astro girl was another one of my favs, but she didn't make it either. It was interesting to see that patrol man ranked 7th, higher than two of the predetermined finalists and that snapback had pretty poor numbers -- guess he'll have to prove himself to the readership then.
It could be an interesting story where the contestants find out how they fared with the audience and maybe see snapback's reaction to being picked above so many higher vote-getters.

I've just read this entire thread and am VERY disappointed in myself for not looking into this sooner. It sounds like something I would have thoroughly enjoyed.
I noticed my CBS had copies of issues 4 5 & 6 but I don't want to miss the first 3 issues.
I will absolutely be getting this in TPB as soon as it comes out!

I ended up liking the series quite a bit. My early favorites were The Shingle, Power Temp, and Freezer Burn. Some of the characters are a little goofy (IV or 4) but I generally like what he had going on. I posted this in another thread, but I met Todd and his wife at Wizard World LA and got this from his: http://kevinaleung.home.comcast.net/special_sketches_MELad.jpg I still remembers a lot of Legionnaires and was able to draw Tenzil from scratch.
