In what looks to me like their own version of Marvel's Essentials, DC will start producing 500-page black and white collections in September called Showcase Presents, focusing on Silver Age characters.

The first book will, of course, feature Superman. October will see a release of a Jonah Hex volume (yeah!) and other future releases will feature Green Lantern, Metamorpho, and the Justice League.

Dare we hope for one (or one hundred) featuring the Legion?

Pulse has more details on the series including the price for the books ($16.99).

Sounds like a bargain! At that price, I might even go for the Jonah Hex - and confess I'd like to see Sugar & Spike too, for some odd reason.

Black and white though... that's what always drives me away. Colors are part of what makes comics worth reading for me.

Still... it is a good deal... maybe I'll see if they do one for the Flash... [Wink]

Context... who needs it?

Even better bargain now! DC just dropped the price to $9.99. $9.99! For a 500 page book! Newsarama has more info. I just hope they honor my pre-order at the new price. Those two books (Superman and Green Lantern) accounted for nearly 1/2 of my July comics order.

Can't beat the deal on this. It was a bargain at 17 bucks but at 10 it's amazing. Can't wait to read this stuff, most of it for the first time.

If the black and white is really a problem let the kiddies colour it. They can't possibly miscolour things more than those silver aged colorists did. [Wink]

I'll be sending a copy to JM studios (my 4 and 3 year old cousins) to see what they can do with superman between september and the holidays.

At this price and page count it amounts to the same as a decent coloring book. I may just see if I can get in an order for an extra copy of each just to have the pages for scanning.

Are they ALL gonna be $10? Can't turn that deal down!

I recently reread my Howard the Duck Essential, the b&w format didn't hurt it at all for me.

Never mind my question-- "first TWO" it says. That Superman one is going to be hard for me to turn down.

I want them...but I don't think getting them will stop me from wanting the hardcover-and-in-color Archive Editions, also...

I've been waiting years for DC to do this, I'm really happy they finally have.

The third one, the Metamorpho collection, was on DC's list for this month's orders. Through DCBS they are still offering a 50% discount on the book. Making it only $8.49. Definitely worth it for another month.

I'm still up in the air on if I want Metamorpho at $16.99. Have never been a huge fan of that particular series for some reason.

Last month I only preordered Superman. With the price drop, I have emailed by retailer and asked him to add in the GL book.

My question for you all, what future collections would you like to see? Here's my top 10 list.

LEGION ('natch. But what I'd like to see is a sort of "archives suppliment" that would go back and collect all of the cameos and cross-overs that the Archives skipped. Probably won't happen though as Jen's article quotes DC as saying that the Showcase books will only collect stories done by a series regular creative team.)

TOMAHAWK (The early issues, before they got all goofy on dinos and giant gorillas. Another that probably won't happen as I doubt D has original film to work from. I'd guess I have a better chance of getting a Tomahawk Archive first.)

BAT LASH (Gee, here I go picking another that is unlikely to get published. WIth his Showcase appearances and his series, I don't think Bat has 500 pages worth of silver age material.)

SUGAR AND SPIKE (I'd love this, and bet that it's go big with non fanboys in the bookstore market.)

BLACKHAWK (A fari bit after the target dates for teh series, but I'd like a collection of the Evanier/Spiegle run.)

CANCELED COMICS CALVACADE (I can dream can't I. Most of the books that got the ax in the great DC Implosion wre favs of mine at the time, and I believe the two issues were both close to 500 pages.)

ATOMIC KNIGHTS (Mostly just for the wonderful Murphy Anderson art. Not sure there was 500 pages worth of stories, but could be backed up with any other Anderson drawn stories from the silver age sci-fi books.)

JIMMY OLSEN (Nothing says goofy silver age fun like Superman's Pal?)

PHANTOM STRANGER (At least the Aparo drawn issues.)

STEVE DITKO (Can we focus on a creator instead on one hero? Most of Ditko's work deserves collection, but few of his series lasted long enough to get collected individually. I'd include Question, Mr. A, Blue Beetle, Hawk&Dove, Creeper, Shade, Starman, etc.)

Since I never can stop at 10, how about an Showcase flip-book, half with The SECRET SOCIETY OF SUPER-VILLAINS and half with FREEDOM FIGHTERS, and including the unpubbed cross-over from CCC and Ray solo stories.

Also, I'd love an ATARI FORCE collection, with the series, the special, and the mini-comics.

Superman
Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane (so bad it's good)
Titans
Legion
All-Star Comics - 70s run

Jonah Hex - Like to try some westerns
War Titles, Sgt. Rock etc., not too familiar with them.

Do you think they'd collect those romance comics targeted for girls? Those'd be hilarious.

Besides the Legion I'd like to see:

House of Secrets
House of Mystery
New Gods
GI Combat
The afore mentioned Jonah Hex
The Weird books (Weird War Tales, Weird Western Tales, Weird Worlds)
The Witching Hour

Hell, just through in all the old horror books and I'd be happy.
