My experience with the Golden Age tales of the JSA was limited to reprints I loved as a kid-- I had read the first appearance of the JSA in an oversize tabloid I had as a child and the excellent "Case of the Patriotic Crimes" which was reprinted in a Justice League 100-Page Spectacular back in the early 70s. And the reprint of the JSA vs. Evil Star story from another JLA 100-Pager.

So anyhoo, I bought The Vol. 1 archives over a year ago, didn't really get into it, and put it away. But recently I pulled it out and have been reading it before bed. It's pretty fun and I am enjoying it.

I still think I will prefer the later stories when both Wonder Woman and Black Canary were on the team, and I have yet to read a Golden AGe tale that is better than the excellent "Case Of The Patriotic Crimes".

Anyone else collecting the All-Star archives?

I've got them all, with the exception of the final volume which just came out.

The best stuff is in the later volumes - I'd say about 7-9, but there are good moments in all of them.

(EDIT: FYI, "Case of the Patriotic Crimes" was reprinted in Volume 9)

Yeep! NINE volumes out already? I didn't realize there were so many. Might make it a little hard for me to get 'em all, that's a lotta cash there.

What are your favorite volumes?

I was tickled that "...Patriotic Crimes" was also reprinted a few years back in the Justice Society 100-Page Spectacular DC released, back when they were doing nifty new 80-page and 100-Page editions of those books, loaded with groovy reprints.

There are eleven volumes out now, actually. The most recent volume completes the Golden Age run.

If pressed for favorites, I'd say the first two, and 7-9. But I'm just happy to be just one volume away from finally having all the early stories featuring my all-time fave super team.

I haven't picked any of these up yet, nor own any of the original stories. Sounds interesting...

Do either of you guys have a favorite JSAer based on these stories yet?

I've got them all too, including the last volume. I'm still reading through the last one in my spare time.

But, like Lash I think I enjoy the last two volumes the most because of BC and WW. Of course, those are my last reads. I haven't read the others since they came out and probably need to read through them all again to decide.

Not based on these stories, no. I've always liked Green Lantern, Flash, Spectre, and Dr. Mid-Nite. Mid-Nite's solo stories are some of the more mediocre ones throughout the All-Star run, but that never put me off the character.

Hmm. I pulled out the 4 recent 100-Page Spectacular dealies DC did. "...Patriotic Crimes" is actually in the JLoA one, from 1999. The JsoA one (2000) has some groovy stuff too, though 95% Silver-Age stuff.

I couldn't resist the Love Stories one (2000).

And I adore the one with the Neal Adams cover that came out last year.

Has it really been 4-plus years since DC released some of these? Dang.

The all-reprint 80-page Annuals I got were the first SECRET ORIGINS one (1998), Green Lantern (1998), Teen Titans (1999) and Shazam Family (2002).
Were these formats not successful? I know at $7 for the 100-pagers, that could seem pricey to some. Sill cheaper than an archive, though.
