I was just watching some clips of the old What's My Line TV show and thought this would be a game for here. While some heroes have maintain the same career over the years (i.e. Clark Kent, reporter) others have had various other careers (although I don't think any had a career as a flea breeder)

So, one person thinks of a career a superhero had in her/his alter ego. People then can ask yes or no questions to try to determine the occupation. The focus should be on the occupation rather than the superhero. The first person who correctly guesses the occupation goes next. You do get bonus points for guessing the superhero also.

I will begin. Our guest has entered and signed in. Miss Arlene Francis will begin the questioning...

Does your occupation ever involve you leaving the land (e.g. traveling in the air, space, on or under water)?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Not this particular career of mine.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Is there a product associated with your occupation?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Yes, there is a product associated with my occupation.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Would I be likely to use this product?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Hmmmmm...... It is possible that you would use the product.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

If I were to use this product, would I be more likely to use it in my home than anywhere else?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

It is equally likely for you to use the product in your home as well as elsewhere.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Are you involved in the manufacture of this product?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

No, I am not involved in the manufacture of the product.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Do you sell the product in question?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Yes, I do sell the product in question.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Would I have been more likely to have used this product when I was a child?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Yes,you would have more likely used the product as a child.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Are you a toy salesman, such as Hal Jordan?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Why yes, I am toy salesman Hal Jordan. And with only 2 no answers, I have won $10.

Your turn Eryk. (although I won't be guessing til tomorrow)

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Actually, it's 3 no answers. The equally likely to use in the home as elsewhere counts as a no, since I asked if it was more likely.

Will the next contestant please enter and sign his or her name?

Thank you. We'll begin our next set of questions with Bennett Cerf. [Wink]

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

(Knowing the WML? fans on LW are, I think it's more like EDE is Bennett, Quis is Arlene and I'm Dorothy, but here goes: [Wink] )

Do you work for a profit-making organization?

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

I fancy myself more as John Daley.

Eryk from the clips I've seen, when the answer is a "yes and no" it is counted as a yes answer and not as a no answer.

Is there a product associated with this occupation.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

I work for an organization that at least intends to make a profit. [Wink]

There is no specific product associated with my occupation. That's one card flipped.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Does your occupation put you in the public's eye?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Hmm... that's a tough one. Let us say that there exist circumstances under which one in my profession may find oneself in the public eye as a result of one's participation in this profession, though it would not necessarily be the intention of one partaking in this profession to become a public figure.

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

EDE, John Daly would be proud! [Wink]

Is there a service associated with this line?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Hmm... there are aspects of this line that may be described as providing a service, yes.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Would this service be for an individual on a one by one basis, like say a tutor?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Yes, this service would be provided to individuals.

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

Is this a useful service, rather than a luxury?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Some services that might be provided by the general profession to which I belong would probably be considered as useful, while others might be more of a luxury.

I will note that while the broad organization with which I work does provide various services, my own role in the enterprise is typically fairly remote from those aspects of the organization.

Is your occupation what one might describe as a "support" role, such as corporate finance, HR, and the like?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

I think that I would have to give that a no, as I think it would be stretching it way too much to try to fit anything I do in with those categories.

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

Are you the head of this organization?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

I have at times been the head of the organization, but have at other times worked for others.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Do you work with finances?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

It is certainly the case that a significant amount of monetary resources pass through my hands.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

When you worked for others, was it in the same organization that you headed?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

There are distinguishable organizations, some of which I've headed and in some of which I've worked for others, so I think the answer to your question is no.

This may be a disputable point, however.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Is this a profit making organization?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

That's already been asked, but, yes, the intention of this organization is to make a profit.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Does this organization bear your name?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Well, I've said that there's multiple organizations in play, here, but at least some of them would be correctly described as using my name.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

this is a tough one. I think this will be wrong, but here goes.

Are you a philanthropist Like Bruce Wayne?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

So, one of the disadvantages of playing the game this way is that you lose out on the reactions of the audience, guest, and host.

I'm pretty sure that guess would result in massive [ROTFLMAO]

No, I am not a philanthropist like Bruce Wayne.

Are you an industrialist like Lex Luthor?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

No, I am not an industrialist like Lex Luthor.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Okay, hint time, I guess.

So while the industrialist guess was wrong, this is an occupation that Lex Luthor has held.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

hmmmm.... was Luthor ever a Fuller Brush man?

Does your occupation involve the construction of mechanical devices like Tony Stark's does?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Not normally, no.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Another hint:

While this is not Bruce Wayne's occupation, a famous quote from Bruce Wayne makes reference to this occupation.

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

Are you a criminal?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

I am a criminal (or a gangster, to be more specific).

I believe this means you get the next character/occupation, though perhaps we should see if someone can name the super-hero who is a criminal in his secret identity...

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

Actually, the first post says you get a bonus for guessing the super-hero. The first person who guesses the occupation goes next.

(Though, for the sake of completion, I take it that this super-hero was a gangster as part of his regular secret identity, so Batman's impersonation of "Matches" Malone during the Ra's al Ghul arc doesn't count? Likewise, Moon Knight's Jake Lockley, who had ties to organized crime but was a cab driver not a gangster, isn't who who you're looking for?)

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

It's neither of those.

I was thinking of Eel O'Brian, Plastic Man. Plas was a criminal before he gained super-powers, and maintained the identity afterwards to infiltrate various criminal activities. Sometimes he would lead his own gang, and other times he would work for others.

Over to you, HWW.

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

OK. Our next guest has signed in. Let the questioning begin.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Does your occupation involve a service rather than a product?

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

Yes.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Is this service of a white collar professional nature, such as a doctor, lawyer, accountant, rather than a more blue collar service, like a plumber or salesman?

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

Yes, it is of a white collar nature.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Is this a current occupation for ou as opposed to something you did in the past but no longer do?

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

I don't know if I'm doing it now or not. [Smile]

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Have you ever had any other occupation?

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

Yes.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

To reiterate, the occupation is a service of a white collar nature that you believe that you still do, but you have held other occupations in the past.

Is this service financial in nature?

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

No, the service is not of a financial nature.

To be clear, I'm not sure if I still do this job or not. (Chroniclers can be so vague about these things.)

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Are you in the legal profession?

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

No, I am not in the legal profession.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Are you a doctor like Dr. Mid-Nite?

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

No, I am not a doctor.

Posted by Quislet, Esq on :

Does your occupation involve finance?

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

No, my occupation does not involve finance.
