Hint #2: The Legionnaire in question didn't appear in the four issues prior to this panel either. That's probably the longest absence this Legionnaire has ever had under Levitz's pen. Yes, some of those issues may include other parts of the Universo Project.

Ibby has it! Phantom Girl clocked in only one appearance during the whole of the Universo Project. She arrived as mind-controlled back-up with Shrinking Violet and Wildfire's away team, but didn't appear again after that. She was absent from the team shot where Saturn Girl was welcomed back to the Legion as well.
After seeing so much of Tinya the last two volumes of the Legion, I was surprised she was absent from a Levitz storyline.

I guessed it was Tinya because I remembered that Ultra Boy was without her for most of his appearances in that storyline. I also knew she wasn't one of the Legionnaires who attacked Brainy, Dreamy and Cham in Brainy's lab.
She did make a nice comeback during the Starfinger storylines, though.

Kent has it. Thunder was last been before the Rift; the assumption was that she was still with her family, but it was never confirmed. I agree with you, Xben - her one-page exit was even one of her best scenes.
Since Thunder and Star Boy left just prior to the Rift, I still considered them for the question. Apologies, Xben, if I caused confusion though; I should probably have said "Pre-Damned Legionnaires" instead.
Violet was seen in #3 with Cosmic Boy, Invisible Kid and Chuck Taine as the Subs.
Kinetix was seen in #1 as a Science Police officer.
XS and Star Boy were the stars of #4, and the issue ended with them being stranded on a Xanthu that was being invaded by Robotica. Dreamer and the Amazers managed to escape.
As for the rest of the team:
M'Onel and Triad were seen in #1; Mon as an active hero on Earth and Triad taking over Brande Industries.
#2 had Spark visiting her family.
#3 also had Dyrk Magz, the former Magno, as a Sci Cop on Braal.
#5 had Karate Kid and Ferro stranded on the spiritual haven that is Steeple.
#6 had Apparition joining Timber Wolf on Rimbor.

I was just rereading LSH Archives Volume 2, and came across "The Doom of the Super-Heroes" - the one where Mask Man basically kills everybody.
If you remember that one, the splash page (a symbolic one, basically an internal cover, as was common for the series in those days) showed Mask Man spinning a wheel with the different Legionnaires faces, in order to decide who he would kill next.
There are 15 Legionnaires shown on that wheel. By my count, we'd seen 20 different members on the team up to this point.
This is a two part question: a. Who are the five members who are missing from that page? b. For which two members that are on that page does that image represent the only picture they have in their second appearance in a Legion story?

You've cottoned onto the fact that Lightning Lad wouldn't be there, as he was dead at the time, nor Supergirl, who just wasn't around all the time. Pete Ross wasn't there either, but I'm not counting him in my list of 20 Legionnaires since he didn't actually join the team as a proper Legionnaire.
Of the other two characters who don't appear in the panel, all three were definitely "active Legionnaires." Two did not appear all that often at the time, but the third was a major player in the story and in the series in general, so it's a bit of mystery that they don't show up.
Of the two who do make their second appearance in a Legion story on that panel, one had debuted a long time earlier, and the other only a couple of stories earlier.

I have no idea but I am thoroughly intrigued / confused. You say from a publishing perspective - does that mean it was published in 1918? Or maybe that in the story, it took place in 1918? But it was in Superboy's time - so it was published during a point in real history when Superboy's time would have been around 1918? So maybe it was in a story written around 1940? Just speculating here.
As I said, I have no idea, so here's a guess that doesn't really fit with my above ramblings, but picking a hero with 20th century connections: Brainiac 5.

Basically, I'm saying that some Legionnaire's first time travel trip to Superboy's time took place in a comic published 40 years after a comic in which their parents had done so.

Yeah, I was confused at first, but the key is that we're not talking about when the founders first paid a visit, we're talking about a 40 year gap between the parents and another specific Legionnaire. This means that the earliest we could have seen this Legionnaire visit Superboy's time is 1998, 40 years after the first Legion story, but it's probably even later than that, since there wasn't even a "Superboy" at the time. (I guess "young Clark Kent's time" might be the same as "Superboy's time" though.)
So if I'm interpreting this correctly that means that any Legionnaire we ever saw go back to Smallville in Superboy's time prior to 1998 is automatically out.
Off the top of my head, that eliminates the founders, Ultra Boy, Star Boy, Blok, Dawnstar, Karate Kid, Shadow Lass, Mon-El, Triplicate Girl, Phantom Girl and I'm sure heaps of others.
Of course my key problem is that I can't remember any seeing any Legion parents visiting Smallville at all. The latest that the parent's trip could have been show would be the early 1970's. So that would seem to eliminate characters were created after that.
Anyway, after all that, I'll guess Colossal Boy, because he fits my logic so far and because I can remember that his parents have actually be seen on panel!

Colossal Boy travelled back to Smallville in Adventure Comics 351, back in '66, which would make the "40 year gap" occur in '26, prior to the start of DC comics.
Not Saturn Girl, either, KK.
P.S. - It was definitely during a period when there was a "Superboy" as opposed to just a "young Clark Kent"

Adding to Xben's detective work, I think we can eliminate every Legionnaire invented after Chemical King since the oldest of them, Wildfire, is only 39 years old - thus, none of those Legionnaires could have had parents go back in time before they were invented UNLESS those parents pre-dated their invention. But the only character I can think of that fits that bill is XS, and then - only her Mum, not her Dad.
But since I think most of the Adventure-era members went back to Smallville, who does that leave us with? I have no idea.
So I'll guess - Magnetic Kid.

Seems to me Supergirl's parents were first published early enough, so that's going to be my guess.
I took a guess at XS too before reading Blacula's post, and came up with the same problem, I didn't think Dawn Allen was time traveling with a husband or boyfriend.
I can't think of any second-generation Legionnaires and the only "DCU legacy" Legionnaires I can think of are XS, Brainiac 5, and Supergirl (okay not really a Super-legacy, but rather a contemporary brand extension ).
So if it isn't Supergirl, or some other DCU legacy character I'm missing, I'm guessing the parents weren't created specifically as the Legionnaire's parents, but rather the Legionnaire was created from the parents, or they were created independently and some writer along the way decided "hey, wouldn't it be cool if those two throwaway characters were _____'s parents?"

I'm not sure about the time-traveling exploits of Supergirl's parents (they well could have visited Smallville, I'm just not aware if they did or not) but a quick bit of research shows that Supergirl traveled back to Superboy-era Smallville in Superboy #80, April of 1960. So even if they did possibly precede her, there's not enough of a buffer to have it had been 40 years prior.
And neither is it XS, as I'm fairly certain her father was only created during the Archie era.

There are characters who were around for a long time and became Legionnaires later - Polar Boy and White Witch both fit that bill. Whether their parents ever visited Superboy's time, though, I have no idea.
Another character with famous parents, or at least a famous Dad is Chameleon Boy, and he did visit Superboy sometime in the 1970's, during that Blood Crystal story. I can't remember if he visited before that, and I don't recall RJ Brande going back to Superboy's time really early on at all. But whatever, I'll guess Chameleon Boy.

Rond crossed my mind too, and Universo did a bunch of time traveling in his first story, it's implied, but not to Superboy's time. And I don't know when we've seen Rond travel to Superboy's time in recent years (or ever, I guess). But then it's a good guess. I was wondering if it might have to do with a "non-standard" Legionnaire - like Rond, or Nemesis Kid, Alaktor, etc. Anyway, the question has got me thinking, that's for sure.

All of that took place in Superboy #148, in 1968, a full 40 years before Polar Boy himself ever travelled to that same period (in Legion of Three Worlds) to retrieve a lock of Luthor's hair.
As I mentioned earlier, Polar Boy had previously travelled to the 20th century, but that had been to Supergirl's time period, in Adventure 351.

Perhaps Mark's more reasonable counterargument played a role in why Ferro Lad was never brought back.

You know, as many times as I've read that issue, I've always interpreted the all-caps phrase ". . . LIKE THIS SOLAR STUNNER FROM THE MOON TITAN" to mean the weapon belonged to a villain called "The Moon Titan" or to some really powerful but unnamed foe who happened to come from earth's moon.

Adventure # 333, Page 3, panel two, shows the Legionnaires voting as to whether or not to undertake the mission. One of the Legionnaires whose picture is depicted is clearly Bouncing Boy, even though he had lost his power and been relegated to the Legion Reserve a full year earlier.
By the way, if he votes is unclear since the art is obscured by Triplicate Girl's dialogue balloon.

I recall both stories, though I don't recall specific issue numbers.
The first, I think, was when the team had to fight Jungle King and his Legion of Super-Monsters. In this instance, Saturn Girl relented.
The other I can think of is the infamous 'Planetary Chance Machine' issue, where the Legion was selecting team members to break into a guarded citadel. Saturn Girl resented the notion this time and insisted on her proper place on the team.

You've got them both, Future (at least, both of the ones I'm aware of). Especially amusing since it came during Saturn Girl's term as Legion leader. Perhaps could have imagined hearing it during Brainy's term as leader, if you wanted to take the character in that direction, but not when he was talking to his leader.

I think the only reason he could even try to dismiss Saturn Girl the second time was, as first bonked by a planet, Brainy was 'mission leader'. It is pretty laughable that in the Jungle King story he told his own leader to sit out.
Ferro Lad, Karate Kid, Nemesis Kid, and Princess Projectra are an example of a group of four or more joining the Legion simultaneously. You'd think that'd be rare!
...well, actually. It's not that rare. Name FOUR other 'groups of four or more' who joined the Legion, or a branch of the Legion, at the same time.

You got four of the ones I was thinking of, EDE! Great job. Some others:
Team SW6 technically admitted Computo, Catspaw, Dragonmage, and the adult Chameleon Boy on the same day when they became officially sanctioned.
Gazelle, Night Girl, Sizzle, and Turtle joined different branches of the Threeboot Legion on the same day. Sun Boy rejoined that day too.
For acceptable stretches, Superboy, Supergirl, Star Boy, Dream Girl, and Bouncing Boy were all readmitted on the same day in the Adventure era.
Live Wire, XS, Element Lad, Ultra Boy, and M'Onel all joined or rejoined the Postboot team when the draft was abolished.

It's admittedly a little vague. The only thing I have to go by is Cham joined the kids the same issue they set up their new HQ. The meeting therein once it was rebuilt introduced Danielle and the others to the SW6ers (as if they hadn't been hanging around already helping them rebuild) so I'd like to count that as induction day.
Very truthful. I included the "branch" term to help include the Threeboot Auxiliary and even the Subs if need be. I wasn't going to be too picky. There's a surprising amount of mass inductions on the teams.

^ I remembered Lydda's previous appearance (she was the one I referenced in my question) but because I don't like the idea of there being these 6 kids hanging out in the Postboot universe who look and dress exactly like Preboot characters, but who aren't the Postboot versions of those characters, I've always reconciled these two appearances of Lydda (and Drura later on) as being the same character.
Maybe she was there gathering info to help the Subs goals? In fact, maybe those kids in the LotL series ARE the Postboot Subs since, other than Polar Boy, I don't remember it ever being confirmed who was on that team.
I've always just chalked her more youthful appearance here down to artistic interpretation.
So with that in mind, I would have preferred the 'Calamity King' here be 'Eryk'.

Actually, they're running into each other's arms after she has just gotten back from a mission. (This is just before Chuck proposes and just before she discovers her "twin" is missing.)
The issue is SUPERBOY # 200, Cockrum era -- three issues before Grell took over (hence, lance being "warm").
The other two guest appearances are by J'Onn J'Onzz and Tars Tarkas of Barsoom (the latter currently featured in the John Carter film), who attend the wedding.
But Spock drops in earlier in the story -- on Page 5, Panel 1, reacting to Chuck and Lu's public display of affection (to which he is no doubt thinking, "Fascinating").

No, and I will say that it's related specifically to Saturn's rings, not just the word rings. I wasn't being deliberately ambiguous there.
However I did ambiguously say "Saturn Girl's homeworld", though at this point I don't think that's much of a hint, so I'll come right out and say this was before they "clarified" that Saturn Girl and her people are on Titan, not Saturn itself.
What was said to be unlucky was a phenomenon that was depicted in the art as being seen while standing on Saturn.

between both guesses I'll say it is close enough, and any hints will just be haggling over details. Val was transported to a place (not HQ) where he met and battled his teammates at a time before they had met him. He knew them but not vice versa. (Karate Kid issue 12).
So he and the Reboot characters met a version of the Silver Age Legion who in turn did not recognize them as Legionnaires.

Actually, I really liked the Reboot Kid Q. A lot more fun than the boring Preboot version. Wish he'd hung around longer. Losing a teammate on their first mission was a good story idea though. Really brought home the fact that this was a dangerous business they were getting into.

I was actually sort of joking about hating the Team20 era. The LSH stories at the time were definitely some of the worst of the Reboot IMO, but the L* ones were, for the most part, really good. And even the LSH series had a couple of gems - specifically the opening issue (#85) and the 1950s story.

Because roughly half the team was stranded in the 20th century; teir adventures appeard in the LSH series, Final Night, occasinally in Showcase, plus various x-overs in other DCU books.
Team 30 denotes the team members still in the 30th century, who were appearing in the Legionnaires series. While of course that was the normal era for the Legion (prior to the years 2000 and 3000, of course), the Team 30 term exists to differentiate those team members from those stuck in the past.

It's better than what came after, but also a huge step down from the stories before the split. IMO, the first year of the reboot was absolutely brilliant, then there was a bit of a dropoff after that first year (which I attribute to Waid leaving), then a pretty big decline after the T20/T30 split (though a few really solid issues, especially the alt-reality stories), and then another big dropoff in quality after the T20/T30 reunion.
Anyway, Lon Duryal made lifelike androids.
I suspect one of them (Ak Aru?) developed the cure for the Tree-Men of Arbro blight.

Xanthu is the correct answer, from the story where the evil duplicate of Sun Boy shows up asking Superboy to rebuild the giant robot the Legion hid in the past. At the end, the brief scene in the 30th century is stated to be on Xanthu. Actually, I found some scans of the story in Action #289 and Adventure #390 (the latter as "When Supergirl Played Cupid"), and even at a casual glance there's more changes in the Adult Legion section there than just a footnote.
(Also note "Phantom Woman" loses the blue/white "phantom" effect. It's more obvious in other panels, but I was going quite far enough already!)

Egyptian slavery was quite complecated, and intertwined, more akin to what we would consider basic debt/obligation than stereotypical slavery. Egyptian slavery was generally temporary, cut a ross class and professional lines, and one could even be a slave while having slaves of ones own.
That said, my guess was a shot in the dark, and no worries if it is not what you had in mind.

OK, I just re-read the issue, and I do not see any indication that she was a slave. She was certainly a subject of a duke, and that duke was attempting to force her into marriage (or at least bed) with him when she ran away and found the Emerald Eye, but the precise nature of her relationship with the duke is not specified enough to say that she was a slave.

Yes - PMS is the Peyer, McCraw, Stern era after Waid left (Emerald Vi to DnA). An extreme low point in the Reboot's history IMO - although the descent was gradual and in fact some of the early Legionnaires stories during this period were still very good.
Until the teams reunited in LoSH #100 it wasn't so much the writing that annoyed me during this period as it was the plot decisions - Lori, Lori, Lori, too many new members and, of course, killing off Gim - but after LoSH #100 even the writing turned to crap IMO.

I heartily agree with you. The writing was still decent towards the start (Gates, Spark, Brainiac 5, Ultra Boy, Kinetix, XS, M'Onel, Chameleon, Star Boy, Shvaughn Erin among others were very well-written IMO) and the buildup to, and conclusion of, the Mordru/Eye arc remains one of my faves.
Besides Lori and the loss of Gim, I'm also perplexed at the inclusion of Monstress and the snake-ifying of Sensor. I love Monstress, but only because of DNA's take on her (and frankly, sevaral others like Kid Q, Mysa or even Particon performed better vs. Mordru).
Post-100, well... The Pernisius storyline was jsut *meh*, the 40th anniversary two-parter didn't do much for me, the Elements of Disaster was okay, and the Dark Circle was pretty awful. Zombifying Kinetix AGAIN and "mutating" Andromeda yet not having her rejoin was baffling. The only things I liked were Brainy's forcefield becoming internal (something DNA would later use to great effect), the two-parter vs. the Fatal Five in LSH120-121, and the founders in Legionnaires 75. The Summer World issue in Legionnaires 77 was decent, too.

SS, Andromeda was "changed" by a space anomaly. She first enetered it in LSH v4 100; you get additional glimpses in Legionnaires 58-60; she exits it in LSH v4 104; and demonstrates her new powers in various issues of the Dark Circle story arc that takes place in Legionnaires 62-65 and LSH v4 106-108.
Brainiac 5 was also changed by the same space anomaly. His forcefield becomes an innate power, and under DNA he would become able to use it to form simple shapes. I would recommend checking out Legion Lost and the Legion series after that for some very cool uses of said forcefield; particularly the Legion 1 wherein he creates multiple smaller fields to reflect multiple attackers' shots back at them.

P.S. Andromeda's mutation is not at all as interesting as it sounds. All it mainly did was make her lose a few feet of height and start wearing cargo pants.

Re Andromeda's "mutation", the only thing of any interest whatsoever were the light powers she exhibited in one panel in Legionnaires 64. It wasn't explored any further.
Other anomaly changes include -
Gates and Brainiac 5 becoming friends (some people say Gates' personality changed, but I argue that it didn't. It was BRAINY who changed).
Brainiac 5 became much nicer and more emotionally competent.
Kinetix withdrew into her mind and became very subdued (thankfully, this was reversed in LSH 113 by explaining she was merely in awe of the Anomaly)
M'Onel and Umbra developed a closer friendship. M'Onel also collapsed after exiting the Anomaly, but this wasn't followed up on and it didn't seem as though his powers were affected at all.

No, nothing to do with anyone they fought. For both Element Lad and Mon-El, this took place early in the Adventures Era, and for Wildfire it took place early in the 1970's.

You're on the right track. But it's a little more specific than that. There's a detail that makes Mon-El eligible (who didn't change his name after joining) but makes Lightning Lass, Lightning Boy, or Triplicate Girl (who all apparently did change their names after joining) ineligible.
I'll give it a short time longer to see if anyone gets it precisely.

That's it. With Mon-El, this was after he was already a member, and with Wildfire he'd gone to his familiar name by the time he actually joined, but all three did their try-out with a name (ERG-1, Marvel Lad, Mystery Lad) that they basically never used again.

Lyle wasn't, but he was calling Imra out on her reluctance to protect refugee Progeny.
Polar Boy was; this was during the trial of Brainiac 5 for the "murder" of Jaxon Rugarth/Infinite Man.
That whole trial arc was dramatic, but frankly it made me lose a lot of respect for several Legionnaires -
Brainy and Imra seemed to be willing to twist the Constitution to their purposes. Don't get me wrong, I do agree with them that Rugarth was brain-dead, but I also remember how Brainy and Imra were among the ones who ragged on Star Boy for his accidental killing of Kenz Nuhor - whereas these two used Rugarth with knowledge that his body would likely die. Seemed like a lot of hypocrisy to me.
Phantom Girl was one of the Legionnaires who admitted to voting against Brainy because she was a friend of Luornu's - not because of her convictions. Violet thought much the same, telling Jacques that he could vote for Brainy in gratitude of receiving his powers.
And Polar Boy lost some respect from me because he could have stopped this thing before Brainy put the plan in motion - why put him on trial after? I don't recall him doing anything - unlike the White Witch, who resigned in protest.

Dreamer had a vision of Star Boy's grave - although this would probably have been him blown back in time to become "Danny Blaine" rather than an actual death.
And there was also the future glimpse of Sister Andromeda, who was shocked to see Kinetix alive.

Inside of the Interplanetary Post Office we are shown several mail slots which seem to labeled as delivery receptacles for mail bound for Solar System planets. One of the destination slots is obscured, however, and we can only see the letters, "HE..."
Assuming that what we are seeing is, indeed, strictly related to Solar System planetary mail, what is the likeliest word that is being covered up?

It might help to think outside of the box... not all planets in our Solar System have always had the names they have today - or, at least, not everyone felt they should.

Uranus was "discovered" by William Herschel, who proposed that it be named "Georgium Sidus" or "George's Star" in honor of George III.
The French, for obvious reasons, took issue with this and - for quite a while - called the planet, "Herschel". It was finally mostly standardized as "Uranus" in 1850, although references to the planet as "Herschel" persisted for a good while afterwords (I've actually seen references as late as the 1970's).
Even the symbol for Uranus still refects this name:

I'm not "an" Xben - I'm the XBen, the costumed crime fighter who has the mutant power of making a grain of sand appear in my enemy's eye. Or at least that's what we used to joke about in college.
(Actually, I've written most of an extensive comic series about this character and others based on my college friends, spending a lot of energy trying to figure out how that power could be used to overcome overwhelming threats. A lot of my love for the Legion comes from a similar interest. Unfortunately, my artist friend hasn't drawn any of it yet).

Only including the living characters seems like a pretty stupid and arbitrary decsion (in my completely unbiased opinion of course) when you only have to include those 4 or so dead characters in order to get a poster that accurately represents the entirety of the Reboot Legion.

I think those Blue Ribbon digests were mostly reprints, but this one had a wrap-around story that used the "Colossal Failure" as an extended flashback in the middle of it. The original story was written by Paul Levitz and drawn by Carmine Infantino, of all people.

IIRC, the beginning of the story had Marte Allon awarding the active Earth-born Legionnaires (Gim, Dirk, Val and Wildfire). Then she gets turned to glass; Gim has the flashback to the original Adventure story; and they stop the bad guy at the end. It was quite a good story, but you didn't miss all that much since the original Adventure story took up the bulk of it.

IIRC, the beginning of the story had Marte Allon awarding the active Earth-born Legionnaires (Gim, Dirk, Val and Wildfire). Then she gets turned to glass; Gim has the flashback to the original Adventure story; and they stop the bad guy at the end. It was quite a good story, but you didn't miss all that much since the original Adventure story took up the bulk of it.

I don't have the issue to hand but (I think) I remember a scene early in the Reboot where Tinya (I think) and... Luornu (I think) were enjoying some blue banyo fruit (I think) ice cream in the Legion commissary and complimenting Tenzil on making it.
Obviously my memory of this scene is not too strong so just ignore me if it doesn't ring a bell with anyone else.

Reboot named so many more food items than I thought! The two items I had in mind weren't actually shown, only mentioned - but since Reboot named so many I'll give the Q to him!
For the record, my 2 items were:
- Randonian pudding, mentioned as Chuck's prize for beatng Tenzil in pool (pudding any time he wants it for a month, and it takes hours to prepare)
- Black Hole Layer Cake, which Kinetix invited XS to have a bit off in Legionnaires 42
There was also a scene in Legionnaires 53 where Monstress and Sensor split a roast, but I don't recall what type of meat it was.

Okay, there seems to be a lot of throwing out random names going on making this harder than I expected. Think about it. M'Onel is paired with Superman, XS with Flash and there's a shapeshifter's duel between J'Onn and Cham. Given that, who - amongst those actually on the team at that point* - would you pair up against Batman?
(*Note that neither Umbra nor Karate Kid, both guesses otherwise on the right lines, were actually members as of The Legion #12 - the depowered Umbra departed in #10 and wouldn't reappear until #24, while Karate Kid was still stuck on Steeple with Ferro until #22).

Oh, I've got plenty of plans - after the current arc there is done (albeit that's a bit away), I'll be leaving the Academy for a wee bit since I've had my plan for what's going to happen with Cos/Trinity for quite literally years now and I want to get it moving! And there's some stuff in Cathingham (Laurel/Lydia) that I want to get done too. In that context, my fairly-recently-devised plans for Spark & Q will probably wait, since there is more planning to go there.
It's just finding the time and capacity to actually write the damn stuff down that's my problem. Too long sitting at a white screen....
[Anyway, we should probably take this to PM. EDE will no doubt think of a question at SOME point ]

I'm actually still a bit surprised that Comet Queen and Mandalla apparently graduated before Nightwind, Power Boy and the others. If I remember right, Nightwind, Power Boy, Lamprey and Crystal Kid were *supposed* to have been enrolled in the Academy earlier. Mandalla and Comet Queen both must have been VERY competent!
Although, Magnetic Kid (in pre-Crisis continuity anyway) also joined up after they all did yet he made it to the Legion first...

Ah, true. I'm mixing my memory of the next graduation, where I think all but Lamprey get sent to Takron Galtos.
I'd assume Mandalla was an exemplary student as well, going from being a late addition with the Westerner to graduating with the remainder of the initial 70s class. Poor Power Boy ... perhaps Legion rejection caused him to slip in his studies for a spell.
Next question ... who is a member of the Society of Historical Speculation?

I always assumed they were already rejected by the time the story opened.

I believe all those he favored but Laurel Kent were his own creations, so I can't fault Levitz too much for paying more mind to them.

I wonder if there's an in-story reason for Nightwind consistently getting rejected, though? She was also the first to gain membership in the 5-Year Gap. If Levitz really did create all those others, then I can't fault him for passing up on Nightwind. Especially since telekinetic Tellus has powers similar in effect (moves things around). But given that her powers don't strictly duplicate anyone and she's been in the Academy for a while, it's not surprising to see that a lot of fans (on LW at least) would have given Nightwind a chance had they been allowed to vote.

Wouldn't it be interesting if perhaps Nightwind had something in her past or a personality deviance (picked up by Saturn Girl scanning applicants) that was secretly her real reason for ongoing rejection?
Perhaps it would have been more interesting in-story to have Nightwind be the long dormant Manhunter, though I'd hate to have the character meet such a fate.

I know Lamprey and Nightwind and many other students were once rejected for not being ready. Maybe the real reason for Nightwind being passed up was simply lack of maturity. I read somewhere that her new "look" with the hood and all was an attempt to be taken more seriously.

That's the correct answer.
Not a particularly difficult question (I had some trouble thinking of a good one) but I thought it would sound a bit off for a kids' science fair to include a time-travel device. I guess in the 60's writers (especially teen writers?) didn't think one bit of science fiction should seem to be a more complicated field than another.
