I just wanna say thanks to everyone who plays this game! In just 4 months(!), the first ITOAA thread reached the maximum number of posts, and had to be locked away (preserving it for future generations) and a new one started. I don't recall any other thread getting remotely close to that level of activity. It gives me some level of pride to start a thread that has maintained that much interest.
Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled game...I am still thinking of an animal. The story so far: it is a predator, it does not eat its own young, is not domesticated, and does not live in the mountains.

Squirrels eat bugs/worms? I've never seen one eating a bug or a worm, but that doesn't mean much. A horse or gazelle or etc. will eat the bugs on the graces and leaves and grains that they eat, too, I suppose.
And I agree that any scavenger will kill to eat if it can. Racoons still seem like true predators, to me.

And squirrels will typically only eat nuts, seeds, grains, and fruits. They will eat meat if they are desperate, though. They will even eat birds' eggs, but only as a last resort.

Absolutely.
There might be some small great whales in captivity, somewhere, for medical reasons, but they're not kept in any of the Sea type parks.
Orca's live in 3 different ways, but resident pods are the ones that are seen in the bays of Seattle, which is sort of the middle of town, since the city follows the contours of the bay.
There are pods that come in for seals on the Oregon coast bay towns, too, but I think they are the second type, coastal pods.
I've seen orcas at Sea World in Canada (IIRC) and a couple of them held at a medical facility, also in Canada. The baby one actually interacted with my toddler. On her own, not trained to. Amazing!

I was five, the sight of something that could *easily* swallow me whole terrified me, and my mom enjoyed the experience way more than me...

I'm pretty sure it's an Arapaima, a living fossil and considered the largest fresh water fish in the world, according to Wikipedia, and it lives in South America.

Well, not TOO nuts! It IS a Spanish Dancer, the only one in it's species. I've seen them on lots of sea specials! You should see them move in the water. They're like a song, all swaying ruffles and colors. Gorgeous!

It's a humanoidbird, but not a Griffon. (I think that's what you're thinking of, anyway. A griffon is part lion and part eagle. It's thought by scientists, that people built them in their minds from fossils seen in the Valley of the Gryphons, but they were actually a type of non-flying dinosaur.)

I don't know. I've seen shows where orca's attack and eat members of the baleen whale family, but I suppose that that action might be rare. Calves are especially vulnerable to predators.

Dolphins and porpoises are a major great white food source, especially in the Mediterranean Sea. They've also been found in Tiger and Hammer Head sharks, as well. Orca's will eat them, too.
Porpoises are also kept by humans for entertainment purposes, i.e. Sea World.
The real problem is that I usually think of dolphins and porpoises as one group, even though I know that they're not.

It depends on the breed. Smaller dogs tend to live quite a bit longer than larger dogs. Without researching it, 11 sounds a bit short for a dachsund, who would imagine would average about 14-15.

I like to read about animals. In fact, I went to the library yesterday and I got books on skunks, camels, marsupials, snakes, pandas, and monkeys. The thing is - I usually get these books from the childrens' area. (The librarians think I am getting these books for my kids - I don't disillusion them.)
I don't necessarily want to read a 250 page book about skunks and about how some naturalist spent a year learning to be stinky. I do want to read a book that I can finish in half-an-hour and which tells me everything I want to know anyway.
Didja know there are no skunks in Africa, but there is an African polecat? It can spray its musk, but for some reason it isn't considered a skunk. Here is a cool website I found while researching the African Polecat. I liked it so much I wanted to share it.

I need to correct my response to EDE, the animal has not appeared in an animated form, yet, that I know of.
It's appeared on National Geographic TV, which was then done again as an 'over speak' on the Internet and later as a book. The animated form is in the works.
Other characterwise, it's name has been used as a nickname for people like sports figures and TV characters.
