Stealing Lance's idea over in the Spaceopoly forum, I thought I'd put a Comic Book twist on it (Mods, feel free to move to Spaceopoly, is necessary).

Any Annual, from any book, any company. One question at a time.

I'm thinking of an Annual...

Was it published by DC?

(As a mod on this forum, I think it may be appropriate for Gym'll's. Other opinions?)

Yes, it was published by DC.

The general rule is that all games (even comic-related ones) go in Spaceopoly.

If it must, it must, suppose....

Is it an annual for a super-team?

Is it a Pre-Crisis annual?

Posted by Dave Hackett on :

Not a Super-Team.

Occurs after Crisis on Infinite Earths.

I was going to start a thread with this title, but put it in the Anywhere Machine.

I'm thinking of an annual... it's usually red, with five petals, and very attractive to both bees and hummingbirds...

Ah, well. This is what happens when you don't seize the day.

So to recap, it's a Batman Annual between 10 and 20 (excluding 14 & 15) and it isn't part of an event or crossover.

Absotively posilutely! A terrific example of how to use the annual format if you ask me! Having missed the Wolfman/Perez train, I only read this and the rest of "The Judas Contract" in trade format a decade or so ago.

That's it...the one and only Suicide Squad Annual from the classic Ostrander-scripted series! For the record, I felt the Doom Patrol guess was the closest in a way because there was a DP/SS Special at one point and because both are kinda anti-teams in a way.

....gave me pause because Jack's dad appears on the cover, and his costume IS primarily red. But Jack's "costume", such as it is, is known primarily for the black jacket and pants. And he IS the titular "Starman" of the book, so I answered correctly.

The mask clue is finally what tipped me off, as I know Jack's goggles don't quite qualify and he doesn't wear them all the time...but it gives enough reason for a pause.

To recap:

It is a DC Annual that is not a Team book and was published in the '90s whose title starts with "The...".

It is not any of the following:

The Flash, The Question, The Outsiders, The Adventures of Superman, The Power of the Atom, The Question, The Books of Magic, The Fury of Firestorm or The Shadow Strikes.

That should narrow it down some [Wink] .

I agree with you, Dave! I remember that annual made me excited for Thunder when she debuted on the team - yet the character on the Legion didn't quite live up to the story there. I think the Rock of Eternity plot overshadowed her.

Though it eventually moved over to Marvel, Powers' original run (and annual) was published by Image.

I'm thinking of an Annual....

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Was it published by DC?

Posted by Dave Hackett on :

Yes, it was published by DC.

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Was it under a separate imprint? (like Impact!, Vertigo, Wildstorm, etc.)

Posted by Dave Hackett on :

No, this was straight up DC fare.

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Team book?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

does that character have its own cartoon version (in JLU, Legion, Super Friends, etc)?

Posted by Dave Hackett on :

No, not a team book.

Yes a character has a cartoon analogue.

Yes the character was on Super Friends

is it Superman annual?

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Is it a Robin Annual?

Posted by Future on :

How about an Aquaman annual?

Posted by Dave Hackett on :

The character is not Batman.

The Title is not "Superman", "Robin" or "Aquaman".

Posted by Future on :

Would it be an Action Comics annual then?

Posted by Dave Hackett on :

It is not Action Comics

Posted by superboymddjr on :

is it a Wonder Woman annual?

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Is it a Hawkman Annual or one featuring Hawkman?

Posted by Dave Hackett on :

No, no and no.

So to recap:

It is a DC Annual (not an imprint) that is not a team book.

It features a character that was on the Super Friends cartoon. That character was not Hawkman or Batman (and neither appear in the book).

The title of the Annual is not "Superman", "Robin", "Action Comics", "Aquaman", "Wonder Woman" or "Hawkman"

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Is Superman the annual's star?

Posted by Dave Hackett on :

Yes, he is.

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Is it an "Adventures of Superman" Annual?

Posted by Future on :

Was the annual published in the 90s?

Posted by superboymddjr on :

is it a DC Comics Presents Annual?

Posted by Dave Hackett on :

It is a "DC Comics Presents" Annual (which means that it wasn't in the 90's and wasn't "Adventures of Superman").

I bought that off the spinner rack back in the day! I don't have it any more but remember absolutely LOVING it!

 -

DCCP was a HUGE gateway comic into the DCU for me, giving me Superman and a new or unfamiliar hero every month. Also, loved when they had the "Whatever happened to..." backups, with the Crimson Avenger one being a stand-out. Actually, forgot that DCCP had annuals!

Wonder who wrote and drew it? Gonna have to track that one down some day....

Ir was the same issue, he and Earth-3 Lois (not the Superwoman one) made their debut in DCCP Annual #1. Alexander Jr. didn't appear until Crisis.

It was!

Uncanny X-Men + Fantastic Four Annual 1998 (whew) was actually a really fun little story. It was self-contained, however was part of Marvel's mandate for the annuals that year to be team-ups. The story itself is a lot of fun, with a Ben vs Logan run poker match, Sam and Johnny as unwilling seat fillers, and Beast and Cecilia Reyes bumping into Reed and Sue at the opera just in time to fight Psycho Man, I believe.

Wow, revise that. I just flipped through the issue in question and the Giffen pencils I was remembering were actually someone else's. Very close in style!

This was one of my favorite annuals of the v4 era, mostly for the reunion story where we got to see a lot of neglected Legionnaires of the time. The first story, with the nine panel grid and Al Gordon's inks, was penciled by Rob Haynes and Ian Montgomery in a very intentional Giffen style - that's where my confusion came from.

You're up, sir!

Cool! Your one hint implied three stories. Was there a third story in that annual?

The reunion story was technically the third story. The first was Brainy working on Timber Wolf's fatal condition and the second, oft-forgotten story was the lead-in for Timber Wolf's mini series in the 20th century.

To summarize: I'm thinking of a DC annual that was not published prior to 1990 for a solo male character who has super-powers . It was not a Superboy Annual, and the character was never an official Justice Leaguer to my knowledge.

You mean this one?

And we have a winnah! A very significant annual (and the only real important character to come out of that awful Bloodlines crossover [Disgusting] ) for the very reason you state. The debut of Hitman who had a terrific 60-issue run in his own spin-off!

Ironically, as big a fan as I am of Hitman and Garth Ennis, I've never read the annual in question nor any of Garth's run on the Demon! (DC hasn't ever helped matters by collecting that run, btw. [No] )

Thanks to you guys (especially Kent) for answering my not-so-subtle call for a revival here, so I could finish what I started! Yer up, Kent, should you choose to continue on.....

Well, as I do not follow much of Marvel nowadays, I really have no idea how many Annuals they have produced lately...thus trying to narrow it. Good work on that one though.

FTR, the other two were Black Panther &Daredevil Annuals. But I remembered you liking that Iron Fist series, so it seemed by far the most likely [Smile]

yes, that's why I went ahead and gave you the W. I'd been debating tossing out a Colleen Doran hint, but since it was down to you, I wasn't certain it would be any sort of help at all.
