We're looking for a mammal found in both the USA and Australia. Generally, they are smaller than a basketball. Most if not all species give birth to one offspring at a time. They are commonly brown, black or gray. Some species are herbivorous, but more of them eat mostly insects. Other species have different diets, though.
Some species are loners, but most live in groups. In fiction, they are almost shown in groups as well. A nine-year old child would be familiar with it. It precedes "lion" in the alphabet.

If it is indeed a bat, I think Supes should have the next animal. I would never have thought to ask if it could fly.

Ha! Well, I racked my brain to come up with questions to narrow it down, and he scores a bulls-eye. I think it is deserved. Your animal, Supes.
