Really have no idea. I just did a little reading on Kazuo Ishiguro (the writer of the only novel I've read on this list), so I'll guess...their first novels not to take place in Japan?

I'm stuck here - with the closest guess being debut novels, but the answer not having anything to do with "firsts", unless it's just their most popular or bestselling novels?

Since you seem to warning away from "first" and I know that "Remains of the Day" was Ishiguro's third novel... is it that simple? Are they all the third?
