So I was just outside and I saw a hawk looking so cool just gliding around without flapping his wings at all. Anyway, it got me thinking about flying - specifically about different superhero flying styles.

Assume that you could fly, and that propulsion were a non-issue (as though you had some sort of... I don't know... ring or something [Wink] that allowed you to fly).

What position would you affect while soaring around?

Googling up some images, there are a wide variety of styles: the Superman-ish fist forward thing; arms forward; arms in a V; one leg cocked; Silver Age Supergirl sprawling all over the place; etc.

I think I'd favor a sort of "airplane" style - arms out to the side, legs together, feet pointed back. It just seems like a "natural" way to keep balanced and steer.

How about you... how would you fly?

Arms forward. Cause that's how I fly in my dreams [Razz] Also, it's easy to look down and enjoy the view that way.

Arms forward and legs together and feet pointing straight backwards. Kind of like diving into water.

Arms at side. Less wind resistance, doesn't tire yer arms out.

Remind me never to light a match around men who can fly.

How do you steer that thing, Pov?

Arms outstretched, like wings.

At least, that's how I fly in my dreams.

Gosh, can you imagine how much it would hurt to be dragged through the air by your ring-finger? Ouchie!

Cool topic!

I'd say Sorcerer-style. Almost vertical, but not quite. Kind of like hovering but with forward momentum. See illustration below.

Nice artwork. Even better storytelling.
You should go work for DC.

Too awesome, Rammy! In very short order, though, fans will be demanding a Princess Cloud Avenger solo mini-series.

Who is she? How did she come to be? Does she want belly rubs?

These are questions that need answers. [Smile]

Princess Cloud Avenger and a Moog Organ!?!?!

This may be the most awesome thread ever!

I love how the evil doer is doing jumping jacks while firing a gun!

And the moog organ can be Princess Cloud Avenger's arch-nemesis!

If he just jumps a little higher, maybe he'll be in range! [Wink]

But even if he is, I bet Ram Boy's magical boots will protect him from the bullets.

And those things are so cool, too!

So ..... what you're saying is that you prefer to fly up with your arms crossed?! [LOL]

I forget which issue, but there was an issue of Superboy & the Legion of Superheroes in which various Legionnaires are in different flying positions. I remember Phantom Girl (I think) was flying in a straight position with her arms down by her sides. I remember the panel because I thought it was cool that the artist drew the Legionnaires in different fight poses.

At one time in my life, I worked as a stagehand. We did a number of flying shows: in Peter Pan, for example, everyone flies.

The number one thing to know about flying onstage is: Don’t Try To Fly.

You assume your position, lift off (courtesy of the rigging crew) and then HOLD THAT POSITION until you land.

The human body is really not very aerodynamic.

And, your inner ear ALREADY THINKS YOU ARE FLYING at head-height above the ground.

Think of how you fly in your dreams: lean left to turn left, forward to accelerate, backward to decelerate, straighten up to fly up, slouch to fly down.

That is the way your head experiences the motion of the body beneath. (Which your inner ear never sees)

The attitude most people unconsciously want to assume is “gliding through the water”, which is just when you start to turn head-over-heels. And all that leaning and slouching you try to right yourself just sends you careening into the scenery.

Birds are really impressive when they fly. They are designed for it. In the real world, a human experiencing anti-gravity just looks clumsy, lost and stupid.

Freefall is vastly different from Zero G, right? So I've heard, anyway. I haven't tried skydiving yet, so I can't say.

I like the gliding motion of an eagle or hawk (almost like watching a kite in the air, floating) as opposed to something like a blackbird which has to keep flapping its wings in order to stay airborn.

We used to call this position "the human swastika".
