In honor of the 11th anniversary of the founding of the Legion of Message Board Posters, it is my privilege to make this special announcement.

Over the years there have been several projects that have attempted to catalog and help make sense out of this wonderful collaborative universe that we call the Legion of Message Board Posters. Cru did an amazing "Who's Who". Kid Marvel drew pictures himself for nearly every character. Cobalt Kid has written our history. There are a few other threads here and there that touch on it. All these folks have done an incredible amount of work and these all remain great sources.

As many of you know, in real life, I am a librarian. I've often wondered if there could be a single resource that would incorporate the hard work that has already been done and add to it, so that it could be all in one place, be easily updatable and, like the LMB itself, be a collaborative effort.

A wiki seemed the logical format. A wiki, in case you aren't familiar with it, is a Web site that is very easy to edit and update and link to other sites and pages. Wikipedia, is, of course, the most famous wiki, but there are many, many more out there.

And so I proposed to some of the other forum leaders that, following the Wikipedia model, we start an LMB Wiki.

Please feel free to register and start writing. We already have several articles started (many of which are works in progress). We ask that you keep to the same rules of conduct as we ask of you on Legion World.

Please look at some of the articles that have already been posted to see the format we are using.

Grammar and spelling will be corrected, if necessary. Factual editing may also be made, but I think it is best generally to consult with the author before such changes are made.

If you are unfamiliar with using wikis, please see The MediaWiki FAQ.

Please feel free to ask Nightcrawler or me if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you all for all you have done and will do on this project. Let's have some fun with it!

As always, a huge thank you goes out to Nightcrawler for hosting the wiki and getting it off the ground!

Registered...so looking forward to writing up my entries. It will be just a little bit until I get a few things squared away with my two principle characters.

SWEET ASS SWEET!

The wiki has already been a blast to play around with... I have two entries over there... one for yours truly, and another for 'big sis,' PsychoticBeaver... Thank you, Rocky and Nightcrawler for giving the LMB an even bigger playground!

I have registered as Emily Sivana. Will post tons of information on my two characters soon enough. Might link to other wikis.

Such an awesome idea, Rocky! Can't wait to do some for not only Cobie and my other characters, but some of the more general LMB people / places / important facets.

If people have questions on LMB lore or continuity in relation to your characters, please refer to the LMB history or just ask!

Are we going to put Cobies histoory project on there? I think it is definately worthy of being highlighted in as many venues as possible.

It always amazes me that he was able to make sense of all of that random stuff that we did.

I think Cobie should add add those as articles as he has time. [Big Grin]

Sharky, I read your PsychoticBeaver article and was wondering about the cononicity of my version of the incident in which Lardy shot her. I recall that at the time, you seemed to approve of the account and my take on her powers. Could you give it a reread and see how you feel about whether it should be canon? The powers I described could have been a temporary side effect of the Maddenites, if you prefer.

Current count is 12 registered posters and 22 articles! Don't be shy, folks! [Smile]

Hey Lardy,

Still cool with me... I'll edit PB's page to reflect your story... perhaps she lost that power when she was killed the first time...

Thanks Guys! I def would like to do the big stories and major beats in LMB continuity (and this will probably get me to do the most recent role-plays and tag threads from 2006-present). Once I get comfortable with the format by doing a few characters, I'll start that process.

This is really groovy Rocky!

Quick shortcut to see all articles written thus far:

http://lmbp.outpost.legionworld.net/wiki/index.php?title=Special:AllPages

And one for the nonexistant pages with the greatest number of links:

http://lmbp.outpost.legionworld.net/wiki/index.php?title=Special:WantedPages

Quick question, I'm probably going to writing up the Phineas B. Fuddle page tonight and part of his back story involves Lash. Should the main "Lash" link be called "MLLASH" or "Lash Lad"? Thoughts?

Well, "Lash Lad" is his LMB name, so amybe that one? Opinion, Lash?

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

It's interesting that the "All pages" list includes redirects. "LMB" and "LMBP" both redirect to "Legion of Message Board Posters", for example.

Posted by Exnihil on :

Yeah, I know. My own article "The Tobacconihilist" has a redirect called just "Tobacconihilist". I actually wanted to ask whether you thought that was overkill. I do want to keep the article as having "The" in the title, but if you think the redirect is excessive, feel free to delete it.

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

I am a big fan of redirects. They make articles easier to find. Feel free to make as many redirects as you think will make the article more accessible.

Lash Lad would be the correct LMB name!

Whew! Got Phinny up:

http://lmbp.outpost.legionworld.net/wiki/index.php?title=Phineas_B._Fuddle

I'm pretty versed in the latter half of the history, but if someone who was around for the "Remarkable Worlds" stuff wants to correct anything, feel free. I basically ripped that section off of Cobie's LMB history, but there may be some level of detail I missed.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

I added a stub article for "Eryk Davis Ester", and a more complete article for "Greg Evigan Island"!

Posted by Tempest on :

I am amazed at this.

I will add some articles once I square my 'Revealing Shades' story. But am working on some articles right now.

This is a great idea!

Posted by Dev Em on :

I plan on getting some basics up for Dev and Timberwolf/Furball soon. The full history to come a little later.

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

For clarity's sake, the Legion World article refers to the fictional planet. If you make a reference to the Web site, please use the (as yet empty) article LegionWorld.net, which can be read as "Legion World" if you write it thus: [[LegionWorld.net|Legion World]]

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

Let me know if any graphics need to be created. Happy to help w that stuff. Also, if we need any LMBP character portraits done/updated, someone let me know. Lash and Joeboy have been way better about that than me, but I am willing to do them. I am here for the needy, not the greedy, though.

Thanks for putting this together!

I hope no one minds my tweaking the formatting on some of the articles for consistency's sake or my entering categories for them. I'd like the wiki to allow as easy access to the information on it as possible.

Posted by Dev Em on :

Uniformity, or at least as close to it as possible is a good thing Rocky.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Actually Rocky, the idea of you tweaking the formatting is very comforting. So once I start posting away with a plethora of characters, events and locations, please feel free to correct the format.

One question: should I try to add in some of the major events, like I've got on the History? I realize I won't do all of them (especially stories that were referenced and never actually 'seen'), but I could do some of the major beats.

Quick question, Rocky, on category syntax. I notice that you had added an additional tag on the end of the category for a couple articles, for example:

[[Category:Legion World locations]]

to

[[Category:Legion World locations|Hills]]

What does that tag do? I see that it doesn't display, so is it just like metadata, or is it an alternate for redirects, or something else?

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

That was to ensure that the article "The Hills" would be alphabetized in the category under "H" for "Hills" rather than "T" for "The".

Posted by Exnihil on :

Cool. Thanks, that will come in handy. I've been reading up on wiki syntax, but it will take a while to learn the nuances. There are a lot of things I want to do with tables and info boxes. I just learned over the weekend that I don't actually have to create content boxes... that they are automatically created if you use multiple tiered headings.

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

We're starting this at a great time. Wikis have become much easier to use over the years. I've been an active editor on Wikipedia for almost seven years and it is much easier to edit now than it was then.

And I've just added Sketchy's fabulous portrait of Rocky to the Rockhopper Lad article.

Posted by Chief Lardy on :

I've updated the Lard Lad article with his origin. It's largely the original one I wrote for him on the old DC Boards with a few tweaks. What will follow is a fairly detailed account of all the salient points in his story. I expect it to be looooooong!

So how do you incorporate pics? I hope to incorporate various pics and micros that have been done of Lardy over the years, some of which I need to find references for, especially the Dedman and Newcru-drawn ones that I most frequently use as avatars. Any help on all these fronts would be appreciated!

Opinion question on which way to proceed with an article:

This is a one off for now, but I think whatever the consensus is will probably inform a lot of future articles. I want to write a generic article on Proteans in relationship to the LMB: A quick background on the species, their role in LMB history, and a section on notables. The question is, do you think it's better to have the article be named for the planet (Antares II) or the species (Proteans)?

My intial thought was the species, but looking at wikipedia proper, all of their Legion Race articles are named for the planet. Like I say... not a huge thing, but once similar articles start getting written, it will probaly make it easier to categorize if they all follow the same standard.

Posted by Chief Lardy on :

I would go with "Proteans", Ex. I guess that means you know about Pro-D?

Posted by Exnihil on :

Not very much. I was going to just reference him under the notables section with a brief description about being Lard Lad's former sidekick, but with a link around the name to let you write a fuller independent article later.

Posted by Chief Lardy on :

Yay! My Lardy article's got a pic, now! (One of my favorites, as drawn my Deds!)

Thanks, 'Boot!

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

I have separate articles for "Pyngwyn" and "Pyngwyn Colonies of Planet Hyustyn", partly because the Pyngwyny in and of themselves are an unusual concept and partly because the planet is never referred to by itself (it sounds too much we'd be saying Rocky is from "Houston" and it's also a nod to Superman II).

I would make the article "Protean" in the singular, which is the standard from Wikipedia.

Posted by Chief Lardy on :

I'm on a bit of a roll, now with the Lardy article! I just added a section covering the incident with Mordra and Leelee that helped define him. Tonight, I might begin the next section which covers his relationships with Hummer Lass and Hermaphrodite Helen!

This is FUN! [Yes]

Emily, we have had other folks use Shazam-related characters before. Kid Marvel (aka Joeboy) is probably the one who leaps to mind most readily.

If the length of the article become unwieldy, you can always create "subarticles" linked within later on. For example there might be an article about Lardy's romantic involvements that the main Lard Lad article could link to. I wouldn't recommend doing that right away, but if the article becomes longer than you think would be practical, you may want to consider it.

Posted by Chief Lardy on :

Actually, Rocky, I like the article being long and unwieldy, personally. (There's much more to come!) I think all the subsections will make it wasy for anyone reading it to read what they want and catch up later. My concern was whether the length would bother anyone.

Not to toot my own horn, but Lardy is one of the LMBers with the most established history...so I think the length of the article is/will be appropriate. Subarticles would be an option if the length poses some sort of issue, though.

Mostly, I'm just having a great time with it! It is just beyond cool to stare at a Wikipedia article all about the character that I've toiled over in a labor of love for over 11 years!!!

To quote Dev, it's fum! [Big Grin]

To add to the pad...

I've started cataloging the creations of the Yellow Kid. It will be a while before I get to the actual "Yellow Kid" and "Primary Color Gang" articles, but I recently posted his two alternate timeline bits:

Metro Micro-Man and
Grim Jim and the Orange Extremists

and his earlier creation:

Big Blue Mean Mutha

The wiki is looking great. It's up to 41 content pages and the surface hasn't even been scratched. Once folks like Cobie and Abin start adding their characters, that place is going to explode.

Posted by Chief Lardy on :

Yeah, I added a little bit more to the Lard Lad page, going up to the point where he lost his powers the first time. The next section will cover the events of "Turning Point" part 2...and then Lardy's role in INVASION!

Heh. Really, I just like people to share their enthusiasm about what they've done. I know when I do, the Lardy article "access" count shoots way up!

Also, when people read them, they can share feedback about the articles here, including any essential info that may have been inadvertantly left out.

A question for those who know how to do these things: How do you make sure, say, someone is directed to the "Lard Lad" article if the type in "Lardy", "LARDLAD" or "Chief Lardy" for instance? And is there some reason why possibilities don't pop up as you start typing a name in the "search" box like it does on other wiki pages?

I'm not sure if this is the "accepted" way, but it worked for me.

You create a "redirect" page. for example:

1. Just go to the "Lard Lad" page and at the end of the url, change the "title=Lard_Lad" to "title=Chief_Lardy" and enter.
2. Paste in the following : #REDIRECT[[Lard Lad]]
3. Hit "Save Page".
4. Repeat for all desired redirects.

If the are multiple words, as in "Chief Lardy" use the "_" in between each.

A note on the EDE article--wasn't his knack for disguise severely exaggerated as Boy of 1000 Faces? IIRC, he was only able to successfully mimic either Eryk Prime--or was it Captain Lightbulb or someone else? And he was given that name without ever having successfully disguised himself as anyone else? Correct me if I'm wrong! [LOL]

Yes, it was originally the case that he could only pass for Captain Lightbulb (and a passable Lucifer Lass), though his super-disguise powers improved during his tenure with the Light Brigade. I think I've actually used them once or twice since.

That's cool! I remember either giving EDE that name or exapnding on someone else giving him that name in order to show that the Captain and his Light Brigade were, ironically, pretty dim...in an innocent way!

Another useful tool on wikis is the Talk Page. Each article has one. If you have any questions about the article that you think someone else may know the answer to, you can post it there. Please remember to follow your post with four tildes:

I've just put one on the LMB Super-Pets page. Ex did a great job in looking for some of its other members, which jarred my memory for some others, but neither of us were active when the Super-Pets were featured more often than the occasional mention.

I added a Joe-Boy pic to the Hugemanbreasts article! It's a little bigger than I wanted it to be, though. I don't want it as small as thumbnail size--I'd prefer the size shown in the preview image (398 X 600 pixels). I messed with it a bit, but couldn't get the desired size. Any takers?

How's this, Lardy?

Posted by Chief Lardy on :

Yeah, that's good. Not too small, not too big. What did you do?

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

I downloaded the pic to my computer, resized it to 60% using Picasa (Google's Web-based photo program) and then uploaded it to the wiki as a new file.

Simpler method - use |thumb rather than |frame (as I told you to [Razz] ), and specify a size in the code. I restored the original pic and specified 300x450px (max. 300px wide, max 450px tall. The actual pic comes out as 299x450 with that, as it maintains the aspect ratio of the original).

Ex, I'm loving the Primary Color Gang entries! Are you doing them based on past conversations with Art, or has the history helped too? Because I'm impressed by how accurate and thorough they are, including the destruction of the first HQ by them (a retcon I totally threw in there randomly that Art loved) and the various 'blue' characters. If you're adding in your own twists, I'm loving it.

Posted by Exnihil on :

No, I'm not adding any additional twists. All the info in those articles has been culled from messages that Art posted, both here and on the Yahoo group (or other onevisions where folks used his characters). The only liberties I'm taking are when there is a chronological conflict, when I'm opting for the one which makes more sense continuity-wise.

If anyone is interested in reading the "blue" entries, I've posted:

Blue Boy
Blue Cheese Lad and
Big Blue Mean Mutha

If anyone has additional info about any of these (I think a lot might have been done in "chat" sessions), please fill free to correct any errata.

There is--EDG (now actually mat be My Whee Fem has two little cacks that look like mini EDE and Cobies. They are Nobody and No-One I believe.

I believe we've speculated and now accepted into canon about 2-3 years back that the two Nobodys are one and the same because of the eerie similarities.

It's Nads-Kicker Lad and Penis-Eradicator Lass (kissing cousins), but there is also a Nads-Kicker Lass as well.

The LMB Fast Facts (Ask Cobalt) thread in Bits goes over this. In fact, it probably has a ton of info that could help people in their entries.

Maybe I can get to doing a few wiki pages this week!

A few more PCG articles up:

Red Rage
Red Rascal (very short article)
and Lady Dismal, a villainess that was one of the PCG's nemeses.

This has been a very interesting and sobering experience this past week, going back through all the things that YK wrote and finding the underlying continuity. Tonight I plan to do quite a bit! I hope to explain Earth, Legion World and some of the politics of the UP.

Also I hope to do a bare bones entry for all of the multiple Earths we've seen.

Then I may try to get to some specific characters. I made a list on my plane to California today and its something like 50 entries off the top of my head I should do.

The Cobalt Kid and Office of Security ones will be huge.

Des, I made a small edit to your "Earth" article. In it you described Earth as the "third planet in the Sol System Galaxy". I deleted that last word because the Sol System is NOT a galaxy! [Razz] I then added "of the Milky Way Galaxy" after it.

I was highly tempted to make another edit and replace "Sol System" with "boobies"...but I refrained! [Big Grin]

Rocky, quick syntax question: How would I do a redirect to a subsection of a page? I don't think the "Secondary Color Squad" warrants an entry unto itself, but I want to be able to have links direct to the appropriate section of the "Primary Color Gang" page. What's the best way to do this?

Since we are writing down this information, what is the geography? I understand there is Legionnopolis, whose streets are named after Legion workers but we've created a number of locations over the years.

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

Emily, there is the category Legion World locations that includes geography. There is a lot that has been written, but I think the people who have had more of a hand in creating particular locations, etc. should have the first crack at creating the relevant articles. This wiki will be a work in progress for some time. [Smile]

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Yea, I'm sure posters not around much right now who have been major contributors (Cru, etc), would prefer to get the chance to add their locations. We must have something like 200+ LW businesses.

LW is a planet so remember there are oceans, jungles, etc. Beyond Legionopolis there are towns, and quite a lot of LW is farmland uses to feed the population (LW is self sustaining, as seen in the Triumvirate history and Price of Security).

Legionopolis in theory is the size of Boston to Washington DC. The room for additions is endless.

I know Embassy Row intersects with Statue Way.

Founders Park is in the middle (like Central Park).

The LMBs quarters are at Levitz Plaza, which is in Weisenger Square I believe (has it's own thread).

Posted by Exnihil on :

Outside of Legionopolis, there is another city called Britonopolis, which is the home to allied team, the Primary Color Gang.

For those that are interested, I've just finished up the last of the "Red" entries for that team and now just have the three big character articles left to do (Yellow Kid, Gay Green Giant, and Kid Blackout).

The "Hub" for all PCG-related articles is:

Here.

I've still got to fill out the history section of the page, but I think it's looking pretty spiffy.

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

Cobie, that's why the "Legion World" and "Legion of Message Board Posters" are more or less placeholders now. Even though I've been a part of the community for 5 1/2 years now, I think they should be filled in by folks with even more history with the group.

One of the LMBP's most dangerous adversaries, Pornis.

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

Ex, there are enough PCG articles to warrant their own category. Should they be classified as a subcategory within "Legion of Message Board Posters allies"?

Posted by Exnihil on :

Rocky, I had made a category a few days back called "Primary Color Gang members". The difficulty with sub-classifying it under "Legion of Message Board Posters allies" is that not all members are allies. Some are adversaries, and some never even met the LMB.

The way I've been handling it is just putting multiple category tags on each article. They all have the "Primary Color Gang members" tag, and then another for whatever level of relationship they have to the LMB: allies, adversaries, or none... and then LW resident tag if that's applicable as well.

Actually, though, on the subject of categories, I was going to suggest a new one for "deceased individuals". Reading through Lardy and EDE's articles it seems there are enough of those to warrant a classification. Thoughts?

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

Sounds good on the PCG end. I guess I've overlooked the category tag on the articles I've seen. You're doing a great job and I know Yellow Kid would be happy his characters are a part of this.

I think "Deceased characters" is probably the best name for the category for characters who have died in-story. I've gone ahead and started it, with Openly Gay Lad the first character listed in it.

From the article:

*Heh-heh* Cobie and I have a good idea about what he's been up to... [Yes]

Also, in my "Turning Point" saga, it was suggested that Pornis and the One are personifications/Gods of Chaos and Order, respectively. It may or may not be true but would be an interesting bit to add to the article.

Plus, there've been some inconcistencies in Pornis's portrayal, between him being the giant Phallus you describe who can't talk and being a more humanoid figure who can. I realize this is caused by having mutliple voices in the tags, but is it possible he can manifest in two diiferent forms to explain the apparent inconsistencies? Or might there be a false Pornis between the two of them?

Yeah, I can add the chaos/order stuff. I didn't realize he'd been portrayed as humanoid. I found some stuff where he was talking, though I just figured we could translate "Pornis said" into "Pornis said, via Khan E. Lingus" or something. But I actually like the idea that he can sometimes manifest himself in humanoid form, so I'll add that.

I know this doesn't necessarily contradict what I'm about to inquire about, but is or is not Legion World an artificial planet? I know the inspiration for it (the reboot's Legion World) was, and I've always assumed this one is, too. I know, during Thyme Crime, Yellow Kid wrote an excellent account (which I dearly loved) of how Legion World began as a repurposed War World from DC continuity. Now, the oceans, jungles and everything can be explained as really advanced technological breakthroughs in artificial terraforming...or maybe even some of LW's magic users transformed it into 100% real at some point. There are any number of explanations, really. But I'd like to know: did or didn't LW at least begin as an artificial world?

LMB canon has it that LW was a real planet purchase by Nighty, not an artificial one.

It's ancient history has been hinted at in places.

That's the canon I prefer and use.

The moon is artificial (Takron Galtos).

Wikipedia recommends articles of no more than 10,000 words for readability's sake, but that's not a hard-and-fast rule. The Cobalt Kid article comes in around 8500 currently. Characters like Cobie, Lardy and Lash who have such a long and rich history are going to have long articles. At some point, you may want to have smaller articles about one aspect of the character's history, but that's totally up to you.

Okay, I see Dev quoted the same thing! [Big Grin]

Rocky, a quick (and possibly silly) question:

For the categories: "Legion World locations" and "Legion World institutions"... what is the difference?

Are "institutions," to your mind, physical buildings while "locations" are just general geographic areas? Or are "institutions" those entities that have governmental hierarchies, like the Office of Security and the Rookery, while "locations" would include both geographic area and businesses, such as Cafe Cramer and SHAKES?

(PS... if this message falls on the bottom of the page, could you quote it so it carries over to the next?)

I'd thought about that.

The Office of Security isn't so much a physical office as it is an entity. When I was classifying it "locations" didn't seem quite right.

I think perhaps having "Legion World institutions" as a subcategory of "Legion World locations" might make things easier to understand. I'll take care of that right now.

So I put together a history of the LMB Leadership as a page today. I wasn't sure how to put in a link to the list of leaders (if there was a place that would be more appropriate from a format perspective).

I plan to add a few more things to the entry. Probably including some redirects (such as 'LMB Leader' and 'LMB Deputy Leader').

Posted by Exnihil on :

Cobie, I added a link above your intro paragraph, just following the precedent set on Wikipedia for similar articles like "President of the United States".

I like what you did with the latter part of the timeline (it makes way more sense that some of the more recent storylines couldn't have all happened in a single year so the extention of leadership terms is a natural fit).

One quick note though about years 8-9: Although the "Thyme Crime" began during Faraway's admininistration, it definitely ended during Lardy's. One of the key plot points was that Lardy leading the team was necessary for Phineas's defeat, as he was the only member that had been imbued with enough chronal energy (during his time on Marzal).

Cobie, a quick question. One of the links in the YK article I'm writing refers to an evil robot son of yours called "Uranustron 5". Is that the same character you have listed as "Robot-99" or did you have more than one robot son?

<I'm currently reflecting on how this is certainly not, by far, the oddest thing I've ever asked on this board. [Wink] >

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Regarding Thyme Crime, I added in a sentence to show it was still ongoing when Lardy was elected.

As for your question, Robot-99 = Uranustron 5. What keeps happening is I keep forgetting what I call the evil robot and give it a new name. [Big Grin] So, er, pick which one you like better and you're welcome to change it.

Rocky, I was going to put up a write-up for the Legion of Former Deputies, but since you were the creator, I thought you might prefer the honor!

Clearly, "Uranustron" is merely an honorific, bestowed by the criminal community upon only the most evil of time-altered cyborgs. Robot-99 is only the fifth of his kind to recieve such an honor - Ed

This makes it in relatively close proximity to Earth, and the Graxos system has a humorous (if sometimes dark) side to it that fits in with Legion World. Alot of Legion Worlds are unmapped; but we don't know much about Sectors 2816-2825 so alot of the United Planets could be there.

What do you think?

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Its canon that Legion World is far away from Earth (see wiki on Earth and Great Migrations). But if your assigning a sector number to it, you probably have a lot of leeway.

Abin Quank is the GL of the LMB verse and I think we've established he's the only one. So there is no Corps, just Abin (much like Kyle Raynor was the only one). The Corps was destroyed centuries ago.

Oops.I assumed we were in sync more or less with current DC canon.

I'm just really confused about how big the United Planets actually is. It can't be most of the universe because a universe is extremely big, but then you have really distant sectors as members of it. And I'm assuming the United Planets is like the United States and not the United Nations. It's not the most important thing in the world, but it helps to know what is near and far when you are writing.

I'm basically looking at this site and seeing what, if anything makes sense in regards to LMBverse geography: http://glcorps.dcuguide.com/_sector.php

Em, the LMB verse is *very* different from dc comics both in continuity and geography. Most dc characters do not exist in LMB continuity (that's the usual rule).

I can give you a better breakdown later when I'm not on my phone.

The UP *is* like the UN, not the USA. It encompasses most of known space. That is how legion continuity is. Remember, all our stories take place 1,000 years in the future.

I assume that the UP as we have it is within the Milky Way Galaxy. Interstellar travel takes enough of a suspension of disbelief, let alone intergalactic (says the guy whose character is from a planet where sentient life evolved from penguins). [Roll Eyes]

Yes, this could be very bad. I've been operating and building my characters on the assumption that this is a future version of the DC Universe. That's part of the reason why I keep having to retcon so much (the other part is my own indecisiveness/stupidity).

Well, don't feel like you need to throw anything out. There's no reason the Sivanas and the Knights didn't exist 1,000 years ago just like in the DCU. You still have plenty of room to be creative! [Smile]

Thank you!I love how Question Lad and everything I created with him is modern; he's an individualist and Nasger is essentially 16th century Portugal. I picture Nasgerians and their next-door rivals the Dutch Raltveech as these economic giants with tons of internal problems. It is unintentionally a huge contrast to the Roman Empire motiff you have going on, but somehow I think it will all work out.

I updated the Wiki today in reference to Lardy's two kids, Helena and Hugh to bring them up to date thru the recent events of "The Lord of the Oval" in which they are playing a big role. In Helena's case I finally created her article which had previously not existed.

In case anyone's curious the two are not based on my real kids at all. I have two boys, and they're 13 and 8. [Smile]

I also just updated the Hugemanbreasts article with a short addendum about his Earth-4 version, who was recently introduced in my Onevision called "The Covenant".

I have updated my character's to their current status. I have also created an entry for Charltonburg. Anyone in the Chicagoland area might be able to recognize the inspirations for Charltonburg.

I agree with Cobie, don't worry too much about it. There are plenty of ways to get your creations to fit in with the LMB verse [Smile] I'm sure your additions will be welcomed, and I don't think you're changing anyone else's creations right? [Smile]

Most of it's just background information that sits in my notes, stuff pertaining to Emily's family that wouldn't come up in normal roleplaying or fanfiction. I share it occasionally with collaberators/friends because it's interesting.

A part of it is simply geography. My other character, Question Lad comes from this place called Nasger which I based on the Portuguese Empire. I just wonder where it would be in the context of the LMBverse (other than far).

I think I need help with my article ... I'm deciding to completely separate Pbs and Disaster Boy, even though this is a slight retcon.

I'm not sure if I should just say Pbs is from Apokalypse (in the past or the Fourth World) ... or if I should make up a new race (and planets) similar to the New Gods/Eternals?

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

Having Peebs from the Apokolips of the LMBverse most certainly gives you more guidelines as to what his origin could be, but then making it something similar gives you more freedom. For me, I like the freedom of working with a race and world that have no analogue in any other fictional universe. I also like the distinction between the LMBverse and the DCU.

I've been toying with having a category on the wiki "LGBT characters". Of course in the 31st Century LMB-verse a person's sexual orientation or identity is fairly irrelevant, but open inclusion has been one of the hallmarks of this group since a time when it did matter. What do people think?

Posted by Shining Son on :

Not sure what you mean by "category on the wiki".

While we can hope and assume orientation isn't an issue in the 31st century, I don't think biology will have changed so much that most people won't have a distinct preference, to whatever degree.

In a time when it's not considered a sensitive subject, why wouldn't it automatically be included in any database that includes things like gender, favorite color, date of membership, and planet of origin? It's just one more bit of public knowledge of the Legionnaire.

The LMB Wiki, the subject of this thread, is dedicated to the characters and continuity created on Legion World and its predecessor forums, the Legion of Message Board Posters.

As in any wiki, the articles are grouped into categories. For example, the entry for my character, Rockhopper Lad includes the following categories:

Legion of Message Board Posters members
Legion World residents
Pyngwyn Colonies of Planet Hyustyn

He would also be included in a category "LGBT characters".

Posted by Shining Son on :

Sorry, I wasn't clear, I've been to the wiki, I just didn't see anything called "categories". Checking it out further, it looks as if it's not a separate type of entry, but it's an entry describing a category that other entries can be associated with.

So yes, why not have an entry which cross-references LBGT characters?

Is there some way of accessing the list of categories? If not, a page with them might be a good thing too.

I think it's a valid addition, but I might think about not using "characters" because it seems that one of the overall conceits of the wiki is that it's written in such a way as to not imply a fictional setting.

Maybe something like "LGBT heroes" or even just "LGBT people".

The guide to categorization for those demographics on the "real" Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categorization/Ethnicity,_gender,_religion_and_sexuality

only cautions against the "LGBT people" category because it could be too large, but I wouldn't think we would have that problem given the relatively small number of articles we're talking about.

If you go to the "Special Pages" link on the left, it's under the "Lists of Pages" heading. Or you can just use this directly:

The problem with "people" is it implies humanity. Rockhopper Lad is gay, but he is not human. Perhaps "LGBT heroes" and "LGBT villains", both of which are subcategories of "LGBT sentients"?

Posted by Exnihil on :

Yeah, that makes sense. I just checked on Wikipedia and that's how they did it as well - subcategories for heroes and villains.

The "sentients" label doesn't seem like the most graceful terminology, but I'm really at a loss to come up with any other word that would be inclusive of both human and non, so... [shrug] ... works for me.

Posted by Shining Son on :

You might say "LGBT" and leave it at that. Or otherwise, "personalities" doesn't really imply which species.

Thanks for the link X-0! I suggest a link to that page in the navigation sidebar. As a casual browser, it would be the first thing I'd want to see.

Awesome Ex! To think this all started with off-topic run on joke between Eyrk and I, first with Starfinger and then with Middlefinger! Then I went back and added them throughout LMB continuity.

I totally LOVE that you did this!

I did a little tinkering with the categories. Based on what Ex said above, I renamed "Deceased characters" to "Deceased individuals", with the subcategories "Deceased heroes" and Deceased villains". A few characters who were ambiguous as to whether they were heroes on villains were placed directly in the "individuals" category.

Good choice Rockhopper, "individuals" is the perfect solution (except in cases of colony-beings like Swarm [Smile] ).

Not to suggest going back to "people", but I just had a thought-- in a century where society is made up of many civilized species, "person" and "people" would no longer be synonymous with "humans" anyway.

A couple more articles up, this time for a couple of guys that were involved in a "Spaceopoly" project of mine a few years back, but subsequently became scarce on LW:

Floating Foxlike Creature

and

Gamara

I hope I'm not stepping on any toes, putting up articles for characters that are not my personal creations, but, as activity on the wiki has been sort of slow recently, I figured no one would mind. Besides, the beauty of it being in wiki format is that anyone can modify bits later on they have different outlooks on.

If anyone would like an article for themselves, but doesn't really want to do the legwork, I hereby volunteer my services as your ghostwriter. I just really dig doing research.

Quick opinion question -

Though I don't intend on writing these articles personally, for the purpose of link consolidation, what would you guys say is the preferred main title to which redirects should point for these two?

"Spellbinder" or "Princess Crujectra"? I'm thinking the former, as that is her "LMB" name.

and

Stu - should the links point to a main article called "Stu", "STU", "Stu Rat" or "Iron Rat"?

Posted by Exnihil on :

Oh... and actually, now that I look again:

"Jailbait Lass" or "Lolita"?

and

"Clive" or "Virgin Lad"?

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

I would ask Cru which one he prefers. It's really his call. Even though he doesn't post here much these days, he'd probably respond to a PM.

Definitely "Lolita". The chracter dislikes "Jailbat Lass".

STU in all caps was used the longest, though he may a preference.

And, of course, Lardy would be one to decide on Clive, though the Virgin Lad identity was short-lived.

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

Another one would be Kid Marvel, aka Joeboy, Joe-Boy Harvestar and the Jokester. My feeling there would be to go with Kid Marvel, though, again, he may prefer another.

Whew... down the rabbit hole with Clive.

I started researching him yesterday and that is one complex history for a guy who only kicked around for a couple years! I like the challenge, though, and I think I'll be able to do it justice. I'll bounce it off you in a couple days.

So... a categorization question for anybody that wants to chime in:

What do you think would be a good category for people who are not themselves heroes, villains, or even allies of the LMB... just peripheral characters that one or more members might know? I'm looking for a blanket term to cover both personal associates and family members.

In a fictional setting, you could say "supporting characters" and that would cover people like Lois Lane and Alfred Pennyworth, but if we don't want to have references to the fictional nature of these stories, what would you call such people?

I was thinking that "associates" itself might just be best, but do you think that is too formal a term to be inclusive of family members, as well?

Thoughts?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

They don't all live on Legion World, right? So we can't call them citizens.

Associates sounds good. Certainly better than "Others".

Posted by Lard Lad on :

I think either "supporting characters" or "associates" would work. I guess I prefer the former to the latter a little. Of course, there's also "Gen-Chars", though admittedly some of those have played a much bigger role than others.

Yeah, I "saw" you researching some of Clive's highlights and took a stroll down memory lane. I know Clive as "Lard Lad Robot" first popped up during the time Lardy left LW to live on the Sorceror's World after he married Dru. He had a pretty steady presence. Then, after Lardy returned to active duty around Five Faces of Death, both Lardy and Clive had parallel storylines.

I wonder if you've discovered how Clive came to take his name? [Hmmm?]

Come on now, brother, what sort of entry-level researcher do you take me for?

The night of July 9th 3007, the Lard Lad Robot dined at The Beacon restaurant with Babette, the android server from SHAKES. Being wooed by his charms, she referred to him as an Adonis, then remarked that his "smoldering, yet compassionate good looks" reminded her of the 20th century actor, Clive Owen. Asking her preference between the names "Adonis-bot," or "Clive," she chose the latter, and he changed his name accordingly.

Sheesh.. everybody knows that! [Wink]

Always let me know if I can be a resource for you as you do things. I have a list of people, places and events that I keep in my "LMB folder" that I plan to get to on the wiki, but I've just been busy in real life and with the Novella lately to do so. But I do plan to get started again eventually!

Thanks a lot, man. I'm having a blast revisiting this project. I was pretty gung-ho when it first kicked off, but went into a extended lull for about six months or so. This is my second wind, I guess.

I've been doing a lot of clean up work the past couple of weeks, adding links, categories, etc. and trying to fill in some gaps using existing "wanted pages" as targets (mostly launching off of your "Triumvirate" and "LMB Leadership" articles).

Some non-character articles I've added over the past couple of weeks, but didn't announce here yet, are some smaller sub-team articles:

Legion World Founders
LMB Founders
Legion of Former Deputies

Some of the Legion World institutions:

Grand Central Space Port
Legion World Orphanage
Legion World Playground
The Museum of Legion Arts

A couple planets (from the whole N'Chaka thing):

Throon
Vuruna

A couple more Primary Color Gang articles:

Lifeline
Metropolis Place

and the newly revised, "definitive" Exnihil article:

Exnihil

Yeeeeeeah... it's been a slow couple of weeks at the office. [Wink]

Awesome, awesome, awesome! I've begun reading through them, loving them as I go.

One editorial suggestion I'd make is that on the LW Founders page, I'd add that their authority over the LMB exists only pertaining to matters for the governance of Legion World. (Since they have no official authority over the LMB other than the type a Government official like a Mayor might have over a citizen). When off LW, they have absolutely no authority except for how it would be applied within the LMB leadership system. One caveat, however, is because of their longtime role as figures of authority, parts of the LMB membership often looks to them during major decisions.

And wow, just read the Grand Central article! Well done! You totally connected it all together brilliantly--and I know it's never been laid out like that before.

When we do the next LMB history volume, I think it might have to be as co-writers since you enjoy it just as much as I do.

Posted by Exnihil on :

Wow, Cobie, thanks!

Yeah, I completely dig the world of the LMB. It's pretty much the same phenomenon for me as the actual Legion, that type of massive universe just rife with minutia. A key difference though, and something I think make it even more enjoyable for me, is that because it is a collaborative work of so many different people with different styles, it's always so fun to try to make it contiguous. Every little bit, from the deadly serious to the silliest inanities, can be fit into a whole without having to jettison a bit. That just rules.

On the topic of the Wiki in general, over this weekend (and still ongoing), the site has been the target of massive spambot attacks. A question for anyone with previous wiki experience (I'm thinking Reboot), apart from simply blocking individual IP's, is there a more comprehensive safeguard that a general admin (that is to say, not the site owner) could enact to stem the spam tide?

Not really - even rangeblocks need tweaks to LocalSettings.php to enable. And I notice none of the extensions installed at LegionWiki are present on LMB Wiki.

After fighting off rampant spam-bot vandalism for a month or so, a couple of small safeguards have been added to the site. Nothing too excessive or inconvenient, just a couple things to try to keep the content legitimate:

- Anonymous editing has been blocked. That is to say, unless a registered user is logged in, no pages may be created or modified.

- A simple Q&A validation has been added to the registration process. Basically, when a new user first registers they just have to answer a simple Legion-related question. It's easy enough that anybody here would know the answer, but hopefully wouldn't be something that a bot could parse.

And that's it. Simple enough, and hopefully it does the trick.

WOW! What Power Boy said - thank you.

Just a Q - what if one of us forgets our password? Any way to retrieve it?

Sorry for the delay in response, Ibby... I took a bit of a break from the wiki after the "Great Bot fight". I imagine if you ping Nightcrawler, he should be able to retrieve lost passwords.

So, it looks like the wiki has been spam-free for a while now, so it seems the stopgaps worked. Some recent articles added that I don't think I posted here yet are:

A couple bits that I think are tied into the Tempest pantheon:

The Forbidden Mountains
Maleficent

A very minor bit of the Primary Color Gang mythos:

The Micro de Sade

Celebrating his return in the Lord of the Oval story, charter member:

Goon Boy

and what I hope will actually be one of the most useful reference pages from the wiki:

List of LMB members

The latter still needs about 4 years worth of chronology and there is a ton of info missing for the list that I have so far, but I think it's a pretty good start.

I still plan on doing up an article for Clive, Lardy, I just took a break for this for a bit.

EDIT:

Boring day at work, so I did a couple more for some long absent honorary LMBers:

Cookie Monstress and
Series-5 Ranger

Ever wonder about the true story of Santa? The LMB wiki explains it all:

Santa Claus

Merry Christmas!

I love it Ex! As I told you privately, the Goon Boy entry is incredible!

I would only change that Cobalt and Mystery Lad are genuine founders, not additional charter members. The LMB as an organization was not officially formed until they linked up with the other three. This goes along with Lash's original post, Cru's Founders Park, etc.

Gotta protect my resume [Wink]

And [LOL] on Santa!

Half of that I made up in a drunken haze I think. [Big Grin]

Is the other half from you? It's hilarious!

Easy fix on the founder thing... done and done. [Smile]

Nope... everything in that article (and almost all the ones I write) are sourced in full from Legion World, the Yahoo Group, or the LMB archive. The only time I embellish is for the sake of a smooth article flow, but I try to keep all the content as close to "real" history as I can.

A couple quick additions for some bygone LMBers from the earliest days:

Ding Boy and
Chip Ahoy! Boy

Fleshing out a few more of the Legiona obscura:

Brainbox
David Edward Martin
Dead Boy and
Lurker Lad

This one was a bit tricky, as only the smallest fragment of his posts are extant, but I figured since the Goon Boy article was well received, I'd try my hand at fellow charter member:

Lev Lad

He didn't have an established origin but - given his screen name and his stated fondness for Gim Allon - I figured I'd tack on a Colossal Boy variant. Additionally, there was no real reason for his departure, so given his "Who are you" post, the returning to school thing made sense.

Feel free to edit it if anything is wildly out of synch.

Another fantastic article, Ex! You've weaved together all the available data into a really great summary of Lev Lad. In a way, you've brought his LMB character more into view than he ever was when he actually posted with us!

I also like the idea of how you make the trend of early LMBers leaving the team feel very natural. Once the group got more professional as superheroes, it was only natural that some of them would realize it wasn't for them or they weren't cut out for it.

Dear IB made a wiki entry for me!

He loves writing when he's not flirting around. [Wink] Thanks IB.

Get a room already, you two... yeesh!

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Aw Ex.

We don't need a room... any space at least 6 feet by 6 feet will do [Razz]

I updated the Invisible Brainiac entry to include some bit characters in his history, and also created a page for Marvin of the Brood. It's now linked to your excellent Santa Claus article.

Finally got around to starting a Tempest page. It's only the beginning, but it's nice to get that stuff out there. It's been in the head for so long.

Hee loved it.

Added KGZ to Tempest's page. If you guys read it and noticed I missed anything, let me know. It was a while ago and some of you have better memories than I do.

Any chance KGZ is still lurking around there somewhere? Maybe she can make an appearance in the Dark Oval Novella. Would love to get my hands on her [Wink]

And maybe we can bring the Peckers Three back as feces-dropping zombies!

No, KGZ and the Shades are gone. Revealing Shades was my way of wrapping up all those different characters while still allowing Tempest to have a sense of continuity and familiarity with LW.

But no, no more shades, please. [Smile]

The Peckers Three were just something I threw out there when our version of the Super-Pets were created. I put them out there based on my having three parakeets at the time. They never made any kind of in-continuity appearance that I'm aware of, but every time I see a LMB Super-Pets list--there they are, staring me in the face!

So yesterday I used the "random page" function after reading Tempest's article and there was the Super-Pets article! I decided, once and for all, to give them a story, already, and with a name like that, the story had to be kinda silly. So I came up with it and wrote the thing on a lark. So there! They have a story--a short, silly and tragic one, but there you have it!

(Out of all the damn Lardyverse characters that need articles, and I chose THAT one! [LOL] )

For the record, the real-life parakeets (Axl, Ringo & Chance) all died natural deaths. Axl in particular was the longest-lived bird I ever owned, having lived about 10 years. (Tragically, however, Axl died the same night the family went to see the first Spider-Man movie.)

Poor Axl. Maybe Axl will be remembered when people start creating urban legends about Spider-Man movies and parakeets.
