My wife Alice, known on Legion World as Pagan Lass is currently in the final phase of her five year battle with C.O.P.D..
Just before Thanksgiving last year she was hospitalized for two weeks when she developed severe infections in both feet as a side effect of a medication that she was on. After having both feet operated on, she made it home for my birthday and Christmas.
In January she appeared to be regaining her strength, but in Febuary she developed a second infection, this time in her urinary tract. the infection was cleared up, but left her bedridden.
She's been losing ground ever since.
Within the last two weeks her situation has gravely worsened. She no longer has the strength to even sit up or speak above a faint whisper. She cannot take medicine in pill form and is on morphine for her constant pain.
Our Granddaughter Brittany is due to graduate from High School in June. A few weeks ago our goal was to get Alice strong enough to attend the ceremony.
Now I'm just praying she makes it to mother's day.
Alice decided long ago thet she didn't want to spend her final days in the hospital or a nursing home. She's at home receiving hospice care, surrounded by her loving and adoring family, resting as comfortably as possible.
She wants me to convey her thanks to all of the wonderful people here on Legion World for their frindship and kindness to both her and overgrown child she has been married to for the last thirty five years.
Although she never posted much, the adventures of Pagan Lass, Abin Quank, and the Quank Clan on Legion World delighted and amused her.
She knows her time is short but she smiles and says she's had a good life and she wouldn't change a thing.

At 5:05 today May 5 2010 Alice Tabor, AKA Pagan Lass, Passed Away peacefully in her sleep from complications due to C.O.P.D.
She leaves behind A greaving husband, 5 sons, and 8 grandchildren.

Abin, I'm sorry to hear this. But I'm glad she's comfortable and with the people she cares about.
I don't know either of you as well as most of the regulars here do, but I'll be thinking of you both anyway.

I am so sorry to here this. to you, Pagan Lass and your whole family. I hope Alice is as comfortable as can be. I know when my Dad passed the hospice care was so good. Don't hesitate to call them for anything.

Chuck, I'm so sorry to hear this. After all these years knowing you and Alice on LW and all our meetings in person, I'm teary eyed even reading this.

That's sad to hear AQ.
My grandfather passed away a couple years back from complications due to COPD. In the end it came to a scene much like you're describing.
Whatever happens, find comfort in that you'll face it together. Hope your family is doing well.

Chuck, I'm so sorry to hear that Alice's health is failing. I had a feeling your recent absences may have had serious reasons behind them. I wish I was wrong.

The only thing I can understand to say that's not cliched is that, at least she's coherent and is around her loved ones.
My grandma had Alzheimer's, and while she was around some of her loved ones, I doubt she even knew who they were up to the... sorry.

Oh, Chuck... my heart hurts for you and Alice. I'm so sorry. I pray that she's as comfortable as possible and you all get to squeeze as much quality time together as you can.

I, I don't know what this will do, if you'll find it offensive or funny, but, this is my attempt to try and do something nice. For the both of you.
I'm so sorry for your loss. 35 years is a long and wonderful length of time to be with someone you love. And 5 boys. I'm sure she was happy and blessed with her men.

I won't pretend to know what you must be going through. I don't. But here is my recommendation: revel on the memories of the years that you were able to spend with Alice, and look for her in the faces of your children and grandchildren. She's there.

When I walked into the funeral parlor this evening, the the card on first flower arrangement I looked at was from "Your Friends at Legionworld.net"

This is the Eulogy I gave yesterday at Alice's funeral.
Alice's Body will go to it's final resting place today, but she hasn't left us.
She lives on. In all of us.
Her legacy is sitting in this room, her family, her friends, the people whose lives she touched.
She will be with us for the rest of our lives. Every time we hurt she will be there to comfort us. When we think we are alone she will be with us. When we fall she will be there to help us back up. When we think we can't do something she'll be there to tell us we can and if we fail she'll find a way to convince us to try again. And most of all, when I get too full of myself she will be there with a pin and a grin to burst my bubble.
It's hard to believe that as we look at her body, cold and lifeless, ready to be interred.
But the body isn't what matters, the spirit and love of the person in in the body are what really matters. And she enriched each and every one of her family and friends with her spirit and love in more ways than I can count.
She loved all of us and that love will live on as long as long we keep her spirit in our hearts. I see her spirit and love in our sons and grandchildren. I see her spirit and love in our daughters-in-law and nieces. I see her spirit and love in her brother and sisters and and their families and in my family.
But most of all I see her spirit and love when I look in the mirror. The man standing here today was molded and shaped by that spirit and love.
That spirit and love will remain with me forever.
