...lamenting the impending cancellation of the Legion. I didn't want to use my real name, so I sent it from my LMBP/StuRat account.

Here's the reply I received:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Stu,

I hope you are the same "StuRat" that posts on the Legion World message boards. If you are, I'd like to share a little something with you in confidence.

I've been a lurker for years on those boards. I've found that the regular posters there are among the most intelligent, erudite comics aficionados anywhere.

In a way, Legion World is the reason why the Legion of Super-Heroes title is being canceled. Now, don't take that the wrong way. What I mean is that the rich history and character development of the "LMBP" personalities and continuity over the years has put our own gang of angst-ridden, super-powered kids to shame. You have talking sharks, penguins, and giant robots that can turn lardy men into attractive lesbians. How can a couple of pimply-faced teens who can fly and shoot lightning and read minds even compare? They can't.

In fact, our big project for 2009 will be a re-launch of the "Legion" title, but branded as "Legion of Message Board Posters." We will be adapting the best ideas, images, and stories from seven years of LMBP lore, and making them into a monthly serial in the grandest DC fashion. Our early market tests have revealed that the new LMBP title will post record-breaking numbers. If all goes according to plan, a second title, "Legionnaires of the Message Board," or "LMB," will launch a few months later.

By the way, our lawyers have looked into any potential legal issues with our use of the LMBP concepts, and there aren't any. None of you good people made any effort over the years to copyright or trademark any of the distinctive LMBP names and ideas, so we have gone ahead and done so. "Cobalt Kid," "Poverty Lad," and even "StuRat" are now registered trademarks of DC Comics. (In that regard, you have 30 days to cease all usage of such terms, or we will bring suit.)

Anyway, I hope you will find the time to pick up the new book when it premieres next year. Definitely let me know if you like it!

Fondly,
Dan "Double D" DiDio

P.S. I occasionally post on Legion World under a pseudonym. Can you guess who I am? *giggle*

So what do you think Dan DiDio's Legion World username is? [Wink]

I think it's either WalkWithCrowds, Lard Lad or Dinner Damsel.

Did he really send that reply, Stu?

I mean, if he did, the whole LMBP thing was obviously just a joke, but... [Confused]

Click Here For A SpoilerIf any part of that reply had actually been from Dan DiDio, don't you think I would have posted it to the Legion board rather than to the MMB?

Click Here For A SpoilerDid you actually email him, then?

Click Here For A SpoilerAfter reading on the Legion board that people who e-mailed him basically got the same stock response, I decided it wasn't worth my time to do so.

So which one of us is Dan? It's gotta be the one no one has met in real life.

I wrote one. It may be a little naive, but what the heck. By the way, geoff.johns@dccomics.com doesn't work. Oh well. Here's my little letter. It's not all I wanted to say but I din't want to bore him.

Dear Dan,
I was sorely disappointed to hear of the impending cancellation of Legion of
Super-heroes with #50. I was not terribly surprised, however. It had been
rumored for months on various message boards that it was going to happen.

That being said, and having been a LSH fan for over 33 years, I just wanted to
share a few comments with you. I know you are very busy, and I appreciate your
time.

As you know, the Legion lore was irrevocably fractured with the Crisis
storyline. Having been a kid who discovered Superboy and the Legion via S/LSH #
208, and thought it was cool that kids could be heroes and have a club and
such, It was a disappointing day when the whole "Pocket Universe" saga came
about, and my childhood hero was killed off.

After various reworkings and reboots, etc. I think the reason that they never
worked as well as Levitz and company's work in the 80's was the fact that they
became a little too...ordinary. Though they have always been portrayed as
heroes, for awhile there they were not even in uniform, or they were just too
different from the versions of the heroes many of us grew up with. That, and the
fact that DC could never seem to decide which version they wanted--preboot?
reboot? 5 years later? SW6? Threeboot?

All I am saying is that if in fact DC decides to bring the Legion back, and
follows through with the promise that L3W will answer a lot of questions, please
honor the following humble requests.
1. Give us one Legion and stick with it.
2. Make them heroes who are there to save the universe, not just to climb in each
others pants.
Thank you for your time.

I wonder if he even reads them, or if the secretary just replies. I think I'll email him too, just to add to the outraged voices. Actually, I don't want to spend the money, but I'd really like to send him a funeral wreath with "Legion RIP" on it.

I'm sure someone here can photoshop that image to attach to your email

Oh, yeah... a strict regimen of Cheese Curls helps him maintain that Adonis-like figure.

Y'know, this picture makes me think of that old movie, The Fly (the original) -- where, at the end, we see the scientist's little head on the body of a fly.

So maybe Lard Lad and Dan DiDio went through some freak teleporter accident that left Dan's head on Lardy's body?

Help me... HEEEELLPP MEEEEE...!

Come to think of it, I do get a modest discount from my CBS, as well.

But yeah, not that it makes much of a difference...

I just found this thread.

[LOL] [LOL] [LOL]

You had me going for awhile, Stu. I found it conceivable that Dan may be lurking. And I thought "he" was going to say that the reason DC was cancelling the Legion because of us was due to the realization that the current boot had missed the mark in appealing to long-time fans. (I realize that's not true for everyone, but . . .)

But as "Didio's" letter became more and more outlandish, I realized someone was pulling my cyber-leg.

Well done, Stu! A bit late for April Fool's but a wonderful scary story for Halloween. [Big Grin]
