Uhh...because I was born in 1969? [Confused] [Wink]

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

Because "69" is a euphemism for a sexual position and Lardy just can't help himself. [Big Grin]

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

*Rocky has an Edith Bunker "Oooh!" moment.*

I don't know about such things because, despite my sig line, I'm so innocent. [Good]

Posted by Iron Rat on :

Having met you, I can attest that those assertions of innocence are...

LIES! NOTHING BUT LIES!!

[Wink] [Smile]

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

Well! I sometimes!

And this is post #6969, folks!

[Big Grin]

Congrats!

Hey, I'm coming up on a milestone of my own soon... might as well get it tonight...

He's not double Time Trapper yet.

And it is only a matter of time before he is no longer top poster.

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Yeah, after he's married he'll hardly ever post anymore...

Bah. I'll be double time trapper in no time. All I need is some interesting topic to appear to tickle my fancy.

Double Time Trapper is like a duel milestone. On the one hand you have the 5-6 posters congratulating you, and on the other, you have the 1,000+ lurkers wondering how you could have no life [Eek!]

Posted by Pov on :

Isn't it all just Gary congratulating himself? [Hmmm?] [LOL]

We all know that people who don't have spelling mistakes are big nerds and should be put in lockers while we take their lunch money. "We" being Hrun, Mayavale and myself.

You know what? I'm considering retiring Cobalt Kid with 20,000. [Big Grin]

Posted by Iron Rat on :

I smell a surprise twist.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Once I hit 20,000, the next milestone is like 50,000 and I don't have it in me to think that far ahead. I think after 20,000 I'll let Quis overtake me as top poster.

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

If I don't before 20,000. [Wink]

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

I guess thats the big question. In the old days, I could do 100 posts a day in no time. Now I only do like 10.

Posted by Vee on :

In the old days I could do 100 posts a day, no problem. These days I'm lucky if I get 10 in a week! [Frown]

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

Vee, you certainly have fallen behind me.

Cobie, I see you trying to get there before you get married.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

That's the plan. After that, its a long break from posting. If I'm still ahead of you by the day of the wedding I wouldn't be surprised if you were past me when I got back from the honeymoon.

I'm cool with it actually. Its time for a new top poster. Like Scott before me, I'll gladly step aside!

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

Funny how this thread about Rockhopper Lad became one about Cobalt Kid

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

I thought it became about you? Let's bring it back to Rocky. He's probably made one of the most dramatic rises in post counts in the history of LW.

Has anyone who registered around him or after him even close, besides Cali?

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

Well, I don't want to check everybody's post count. I say we assume that it is so.

He really needs to post more in this thread. Maybe if I change the title.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Agreed. One could say this thread is about '69', in which case, its very appropriate we LWers weigh in on such an important topic.

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

I was thinking of changing the title to "The All-Rockhopper Lad Appreciation Thread"

Do you think Lard Lad wouold mind?

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

No, by all means go for it!

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

I'll check with Lardy first.

BTW, you know what? You may have gotten me to start liking some of these inane threads, even after I just said I 'hate them' in another thread.

Actually I don't sweeten my coffee. I prefer it with milk, but I'll use Coffee Mate. I use Splenda in my iced tea.

But, truth be told, I prefer hot tea, usually with milk.

Posted by Yellow Kid on :

Abin's da man!
You don't wash a good coffee mug until AFTER it's first 100,000 miles. Heck, I probably still have some caffeine molecules from 2006 somewhere in my mug.

Posted by Lard Lad on :

Abin never washes his 'mug'? Explains a lot!

(probably why Ceej tried to give 'em a tongue bath at Sandy Eggo!)

[Big Grin]

Posted by Iron Rat on :

I don't like coffee. If I must, I'll have a sweetened, frozen coffee beverage (like a Starbucks frappuccino), but never coffee straight.

I've never been a big coffee drinker. I started drinking it regularly about two years ago when I became manager of a different library and the staff there drank a lot of coffee. It wasn't peer pressure. More like subordinate pressure. [Wink]

I still prefer tea, but getting a good cup of hot tea in the United States, except at home and in some ethnic restaurants, is very difficult.

i was the same way Rocky till i started driving Limo's and Cabs, it comes in handy around 3 am when your woring the night shift now that i siwtched over to days i just drink one cup in the am to get me going,..but as far as Tea goes i do love this Pomagranite/Green tea mix my ex got me into i ususally drink it when i get home from work.

Gawd! If coffee tasted HALF as good as it smells, I'd be a confirmed addict! But as it stands--BLECHHH! I says if ya's gotta have "a little coffee with yer sugar" to make it palatable, just sticks with da soda!

Coffee is the greatest thing in the world...next to Rocky of course.

I probably could give up drinking, smoking cigars and staying out late (and probably will at least slow down) but I'll never stop drinking tons of coffee.

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

I'm with Lardy in wishing coffee tasted as good as it smells.

On the other hand, I've gone to IKEA just to have a cup of coffee. They serve really good coffee.

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

I was feeling kind of lousy earlier today, so I went to a Starbucks, drank a Mocha, and perked right up.

Caffeine: the wonder drug of the west!

Posted by Lard Lad on :

What if coffee was as great a beverage as Rocky is a person?

Posted by Fat Cramer on :

We'll design a coffee drink called The Rockhopper, so we can appreciate both at the same time. I don't like iced coffee or dairy milk, so I'll go with hot black coffee in a glass, like Russians have their tea, with swirls of white rice milk. Don't know how you'd get rice milk to just swirl and not mix in, but this is all cyber anyways.

Posted by Kid Charlemagne on :

Rockhopper Lad's avatar is almost as cute as Chiyo-chan from Azumanga Daioh.

I also wish coffee tasted as good as it smells. I enjoy the smell of brewing coffee, but I never acquired the taste for it. [Razz]

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

When I was in college I wrote a poem about coffee:

A sea which is murky and dark,
Contained in a blue china cup,
Doth rise in steam t'ward the stars
Before the bottom's turned up.

Its waters are hot, so to burn the mouth,
Yet many endure that sharp pain,
For they need to be working by the ninth hour,
Lest the task-master start to complain.

Its waters are bitter, so to make one cringe,
Yet many ignore what they've tasted,
For they need to be studying all the night long
To make up for time that they've wasted.

Our people ignorantly imbibe
Of the waters of the dark sea.
Yea, I, even I, confess I enjoy
A drink from the murky sea.

That sounded so much better when I was 20. [Big Grin]

Posted by Fat Cramer on :

Maybe it could be a Starbucks ad jingle, Rocky. Now back to my cup of dark and murky sea.

This is as good a place as any to post this.

As I'm sure many of you know, Hurricane Ike is aiming towards the Texas Gulf Coast. I'm far enough inland that they recommend that I don't evacuate and, at the moment, I don't plan to bug out. If I lose power and/or Internet, I'll check in with another Legion Worlder by phone periodically, as possible.

If Internet and electricity hold, you'll just see a lot more of me this weekend, because, well, I won't be going anywhere. [Big Grin]

I hope that in a few days, we'll all be saying "We dodged a bullet this time."

Thanks!

Are you guys under mandatory evacuation orders, Rocky? [choke]

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

No, that's only in the areas close to the Gulf that are prone to storm surge. Galveston and the areas southeast of Houston are most vulnerable. I'm in Houston proper. The Mayor of Houston essentially told us "If you're not in the mandatory evacuation zone, stay put!" The adage is "run from the water, hide from the wind." Where I live, they're predicting the maximum sustained winds to be in the low Category 1 range.

Posted by LardLad on :

There was a gas panic rush here, yesterday in SC. Rumors were going around that gas was about to spike to $5/gallon because of concerns about the threatened refineries, and suddenly there were long lines at every station in the city I work. Gas was sold-out by the time I got off. I commute about 26 miles, so I was sweating a very low tank until I got home. Luckily, I made it, and the stations in my town still had gas as well.

These things really have a ripple effect, don't they? I really hate to see the panicking herd mentality that surrounds these kinds of things. [No]

The wind is starting to pick up. No rain in Southwest Houston yet. I'm way out of the storm surge area, so don't let the pics you've seen on TV of Galveston scare you about me.

Has anyone heard from Klordny (Michael)? I think he lives in an evacuation zone. Quiet Darkness lives not far from me (although we've only met once and that was at SDCC), so she's not in an evacuation zone.

We'll just hope for the best.

Michael said on his site: I'll have to balance evacuating with how bad it looks like it's going to be, and when to leave without getting stuck in traffic.

I'll be liveblogging the storm at my other (rarely-used) site and on Twitter (@mgrabois). The Houston Chronicle and Weather Underground have good coverage.

He'll be fine. He IS a rocket scientist (I think).

Don't Rockhoppers like wet areas?

The Mayor of Houston says he wants the City back to normal as soon as possible. And that means that when it's safe to do so, the libraries open. That's a good thing, really. A lot of people still don't have power and Internet and have to file insurance and FEMA claims, so we're assisting with that.

I still don't have power at home, but my friend Tom who lives across the street does. He's letting me stay there till my lights come up. Longtime readers will recall that Tom also put me up after the fire in my building 2 1/2 years ago.

Anyhoo, that's another step towards whatever passes for normal. [Wink]

Doubt it--he'd post to let us know. He's considerate that way.

Posted by Fat Cramer on :

Hasn't he gone to visit his parents? Maybe he's busy - or they don't have a computer. But he's got his cute little laptop... [Hmmm?]

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

He said on the 19th that he wasn't scheduled to go to Florida for another week.

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

So Rocky, what's happening with your power?

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

Nothing. Maybe Thursday. [Frown]

I've been crazy busy at work, so I've barely had a chance to do more than check in for a minute.

I go to Fla on Friday. I'll definitely have access then! [Big Grin]

Overall how is it down there for power? Are lots of people still without power?

How long will you be visiting Mom & Dad?

Perhaps, unless he's flattered that I'm only acting this way because you look like him thru these bi-beer goggles!

My ZIP Code was, as of 5 this morning, 31% without power, including my place. Center Point Energy has some good maps and charts on their Web site for power restoration.

I'll be in Fla with the folks for a week, starting Friday. I'll need it. [sigh]

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

The power came up here at about 5:30 this afternoon. I got home about 7:30, but since I had no food left in the house, had dinner with Tom. Hyvvie and I are now back home. It's kind of stuffy, being without AC and all for 12 days (even with the windows open), but it's nice to be home! [Big Grin]

I'm glad you're doing well, Rocky. Hang in there.

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

Thanks, HWW. Now, where are Stu and Lardy? Are they still fighting over me? I may not be that big, but there's still enough of me for everyone! [Wink]

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

Lardy's trying to remember whether or not he pinched something from STU. I don't know where STU is . . .

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

Well, now that I'm back there's a week's worth of pointless flirting they and I have to catch up on. [Wink]

I'm posting! I'm posting! [Wink]

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

I'm at the airport waiting for my flight to see my parents in Florida. The past two weeks have been crazy, with the hurricane, being without power, having to stay with a friend and an extra workload. It will be nice to get away from it all for a week. I'm just glad my LW peeps are no farther away than ever! [Big Grin]

Posted by Suddenly Seymour on :

Have a great trip! You definitely deserve it.

Posted by Ram Boy on :

Good to know you made it through everything with your positive attitude intact, Rockhopper Lad. Enjoy yourself.

Posted by Stu Rat on :

Will you be going to Disney World? [Smile]

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

Nope. I'm here to spend time with my folks and relax.

Posted by Stu Rat on :

Glad you got there OK (and are posting again!).

Did you bring Hyvvie with you?

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

Hyvvie the Wonder Beagle is back in Houston with his Uncle Tom (my friend who put us up when we had no lights). He enjoys staying with Uncle Tom because he gets to play with Mabel the Extraordinary Chocolate Lab. [Smile]

Say hi to the charming Mama Rockhopper from me!

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

So Rockhopper Lad,

How was the visit with the folks? Gee it seems like you just left yesterday.

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

I had a great time. Mostly just relaxing. My mom and I took a day trip on Wednesday to Saint Leo University, my undergrad alma mater, which is in a little town north of Tampa called Saint Leo. It's a cute little place. I can't believe I was a student there twenty years ago!

And now it's back to work in the morning. This should be a little more normal now that the city is slowly returning to the way things were pre-Ike.

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

Somehow I got re-reading this thread and I'm really touched at how kind everyone here was around Ike.

Legion World really is a community, not just a Web forum.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Ha! Boy did we fool you!

but seriously... it is a great place. It amazes me that we are pretty wide open, and yet see very few people violate the spirit/tone of the board.

I think that like-minded people tend to stick around... it is harder for a wanna-be troll to pierce a community with a solid self-identity.

That so many of us have come to know each other off-line helps, too.

Posted by cleome on :

Jeez, I feel all melty and I wasn't even around then. Must be all the talk about Labs. [sigh]

Of course, Kent will change his tune when he sees all those fantastically amazing MLM offers I dumped in his mailbox (and Rocky's and everyone else's, too). Hey, sorry, People. A job's a job, y'know...

Labs are nice, but, of course, beagles are better. [Wink]

Posted by cleome on :

mr_cleome's best friend in PA just adopted a beagle.

Around here, the joke is that Labs are so popular because it rains all the time, so naturally you want a companion with the raincoat built right in.

[Wink]

Posted by Fat Cramer on :

Some people around here pronounce beagles "biggles". (I know, this could have gone in the Share Something Completely Random, but it wasn't entirely random.)

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

Biggles was the name of at least one minor Monty Python character.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

So, where the hell was Biggles when we need him last Saturday?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

at the zoo, feeding the penguins, of course.

Rocky, have you read the latest volume of Complete Peanuts yet?

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

I don't have the 1971-72 volume yet. It's out, I think. Sally is on the cover, as I recall. I looked for it today when I made an all-too-infrequent visit to my CBS, but they didn't have it on the shelf.

My mini dachsie said to tell you "Dachshunds rule and Beagles drool."

I'm just relaying a message, don't blame me.

I got it as a birthday present from my parents.

I have my fingers crossed that you find a copy soon, because it's a delight. Among other things, it's got Marcie's earliest appearances (unless, of course, you consider Clara to have been Marcie.)

And the next volume is going to have the Mr. Sack storyline, IMO the funniest Peanuts storyline of all time. The baseball-shaped rash on Charlie Brown's head... [ROTFLMAO]

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

I just ordered it on Amazon.

I don't consider Marcie and Clara to be the same character myself, though I know some people do. Interestingly, Marcie's name is not mentioned at all in that first storyline, IIRC. She doesn't mention it that I remember till she visits to play "Ha Ha Herman" later in the year.

I love the Mr. Sack story arc! I especially like Alfred E. Neumann appearing as the sunrise. [Big Grin]

Posted by Stealth on :

It's only a matter of time before the LMB stages a roleplay that involves a rousing game of "Ha, Ha, Herman."

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

When I was in the fifth grade, we did a production of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, with me in the title role. Of course, I now have a rather round head with very little hair and I have a beagle. Irony? Coincidence? Fate? I'll let you decide.

Posted by cleome on :

What about... THE SHIRT!! Do you have... THE SHIRT??

Also, was your Dad a barber?

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

I still have the shirt from when I was ten; what's more, because I was a very heavy ten-year old and I'm much svelter now, I can still wear it!

My dad, on the other hand, is not a barber.

Any redheaded girls in your life? [Razz]

And did you ever have teachers who hummed their instructions in class?

Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :

No red-haired girls. Alas, neither are there any red-haired guys [Frown]

As for teachers who spoke in trombone-speak, all I'm saying is WAH WAH WAH WAH !

There! Trombone speak! I was blanking on that term.

Aw Rocky, I'll dye my hair for you [Wink] Or maybe I'd make a better Linus. When I was in kindergarten I'd drag my yellow silk blanket around the house everywhere I went.

Of course, the poor thing ended up full of holes [Frown] Unrealistic comic strip gave me false expectations!

And Rocky can save us more than fifteen percent on car insurance.

That is, he could if he'd offer to drive us everywhere.
