So far we haven't heard many stories about what went on at the booth itself at Sandy Eggo! I've heard tell of FJM and other creators stopping by--tell us more! How much interest from the Con-goers? Other stories assorted and sordid...

We wanna hear it all!

Well Gary, myself, and a coupla others met the fine folks coloring Perez Legion o' 3 Worlds. We gave 'em a buncha Legionworld swag and I think they got named CMYK Kid and Colorist Girl. They were asking about the colors of a certain LSV fashion accessory...

Oh and CJ fondled my cookies. In his defense, they were soft-baked and delicious.

Giving people who came by the table Legion names was a lot of fun. My favorite was the guy who wasn't sure what his name would be. At that point, we usually asked about their work and hobbies. He told me he enjoyed woodworking. He walked away as Lathe Lad!

Welcome to a virtual tour of MZ19, the Legion World table at SDCC 2008!

Here's the banner we had to display (this was actually an intermediate version, but it was still the one they made for me) -

 -

Here's the 1st banner that I tried to have created (thinking it would be a cool display to have) -

 -

Here's what I came up with after the guy refused to make the full image directly above, but still had issues with the others (This is the one I told them I really wanted and to please make this one, for whatever reason they used the first one shown...there are actually a few other variations before this one as well, but why bore everyone with every minor detail) -

Gary, I still love the idea of the first banner. Need to make that into a t-shirt!

The table was located on the mezzanine, near the rear stairs/escalators, so there was quite a bit of traffic going by. The two tables to the left (while facing the LW table) were Star Wars fan tables (I think one of them was also some kind of Star Wars "Legion" group). The table immediately to our right was unoccupied, so we kind of commandeered it for various things. The one to the right of that was for some group that didn't show up until Saturday, and didn't attract much interest. The one to the right of that was some kind of medieval re-creationist group, I think -- they were dressed in elaborate costumes, and one of them sat in a wooden chair/throne. Two of them made out all the time.

By the way, in that Alex Ross banner, the design on Shrinking Violet's costume really doesn't look like an "S" and a "V"... I can see the "V," but not the "S" so much.

[Edited out facetious comment that was taken for serious...]

Here are the stickers that I had made that finally showed up on Friday -

I've actually got a ton of these left in case anyone wants some of them.

You know Caroline does for scrapping. [Smile]

And Cali really is Caliente! Her pics are the only ones I'm having to fix red eye on. Every one I got of her, her eyes are a glowing, fiery red. Little red hot demon in disguise is she. [Wink]

Klordny stopped by often with a few giveaways including several Legion Heroclix and these cards -

I never saw that card! Damn!

Just Imagine what the Con would have been like if DC had been as well prepared with LSH related swag as we were...

The mind boggles...

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

Does anyone have the APA card? I thought I did but can't find it! If you have it, please scan it in and post it here.

Thanks!

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

I'm pretty sure I have it. I just need to sort through the stuff from the con to find it.

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

Speaking of which we were also blessed with several copies of the "BEST OF KLORDNY"

I'll scan in the cover once I get a chance and post it here.

On Saturday, the Legion made the cover of the Programming schedules that were given away (Mogli snagged a few handfuls for us to give at the table as well) -

And another one I missed! Aaaarrrrgggghhhh!

I just realized, going through my images of standing in line for the Legion panel, Mary Bierbaum was at the head of the line and Tom was just right in front of us. Didn't recognize them until after seeing them at the panel.

did not know that the Con do give out the newsletter. darn it! [Frown]

When Caroline couldn't be there, her understudy, our friend Stacey, stood in for her.

The best part was the fact that the Legion made the cover of the souvenir book -

Several of us (as mentioned by Kent) made it into the book as well -

Glen wrote a piece "The Journey of a Thousand Miles."

Here's Sean's (Kent) entry which he gave me the original to and I plan to frame it along with my FJM sketch (thanks again Sean!) -

Here's Drake's entry (printed in B&W though) -

We had a raffle from Thursday to Saturday evening for my roommates employer Croces. They generously donated a $100 Gift Card. The winner was e-mailed and we posted his name at the table after that until the end, but he never claimed it.

We also had these sample menus at the table -

The booth was a great home base to reunite with everyone. And seeing the number of visitors there was amazing! Of course, all our staffers were outgoing and friendly- great representatives of Legion World.

Of course the main focal point of the table were MEL's beautiful display cards he had made featuring his sketches -

I loved all the art from LWers. I didn't even know some of the pieces I liked were by LWers until Kent pointed out the names.

It's kind of ridiculous that they misspelled Nighty's name, though -- especially seeing as his actual name appears right above it... [Roll Eyes]

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

There were a few people who stopped by and then registered on LW, I believe. I'll have to check and see what their names ended up being. Some people were pretty enthusiastic. One or two even crazy enough where I knew they'd be perfect for the MMB.

Gosh! This looks awesome. I can't believe I couldn't make it after all the planning.

Congratulations to all of you that contributed to making the Legionworld table such a beautiful tribute to the Legion and this place we call home.

PS: I would love to have some samples of the stuff you have left. They all look great.

BTW, who's going to color those B&W drawings by Nighty, Drake and the others. They really deserve to be seen in full color! I'll bet they'll be stunning.

Oliver Nome, he takes commissions at all/most of the cons he's at. He's part of the Wildstorm studios bunch of folks.

Posted by Director Lad on :

I'll have to remember that, considering that I scored the table card with this sketch.

I thought it was going to be a real pain to have to stick on any stickers we gave to people - and that not many people would want one if they couldn't just take it and put it in their pocket. But it actually worked out well; people were quite happy to have a sticker on their badges and the stickers and flight rings were very popular. Also, people got a real kick out of the Lad/Lass etc. name tags and thinking up their superhero name. The banner was a huge hit and Gary could easily have sold a bunch if he'd been allowed to. The restaurant draw was also pretty popular. People really like the giveaways - it gets them to stop and look, they don't have to buy anything.

The table was a big success, IMO. It served its initial purpose of providing a place for us to congregate. It also celebrated the Legion anniversary, which, apart from the panels, wasn't well covered by DC as far as I'm concerned. It also worked as some outreach to people who hadn't heard of Legion World - so maybe we have some new members. It would be well worth repeating, provided there are enough people to man the table and contribute to costs.

Great! Didn't know Drake was in, too! That's five of us, then. LEGION-John had a peice, too, right next to MEL's.

Whoa! I knew it looked familiar and I now remember you pointing it out to me the first day...too much going on and not enough brain cells -

And I'll send out the stickers to everyone once I get my life back on track here...hopefully soon.

I agree fully.

Words cannot express the metaphoric "Jaws" fin that snuck up on me when I discovered the "no stickers" clause... everyone at the table handled it like a pr! No problems at all.

Everything I envisioned could go wrong did not, and I can only thank each and every one of you (especially Gary).

So from the context clues here, you were not allowed to give stickers unless you stuck 'em on people? WTF? Was this the Bizarro World convention?

(And couldn't this pose sexual harassment concerns? [shrug] )

That probably depends on where you put the sticker...
