Finally, a comic convention within spitting distance of me! Who's up for putting together a Legion gathering in Boston in September?

Posted by Pov of Nine on :

We've kinda been talking about it on the San Diego thread, but I'm glad you gave it its own topic. [Smile]

I'm definitely planning on going! I'm planning on commuting, as it's only about an hour and a half form my place, but I've got plenty of floorspace for out-of-towners to crash. Save some of that hard-earned cash on lodging, and spend it on comics! [Big Grin]

I can carry three in the Povmobile, but I could have more lodgers if Cobie wants to help transport them to the train station. Then we'd take the transit into Boston... no more city driving for me. [Wink]

And Quis knows Boston, so he can fill us in on the cool places to eat!

With all teh New England LMB'ers, this has the opportunity to be THE Legion gathering! [Cool]

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

It certainly does! Quis knows Boston well enough to be our guide, and Pov and I could probably led a hand in getting people to the train station.

Jeepers, Pov! With my car, we can fit another three people in if we have to!

I'm hoping Lou, Cru, Kent, and all the rest of you in the area make it! And hopefully some that are a little farther can too (c'mon Lash! You *gotta* come!)

Posted by Princess Crujectra on :

I'll probably end up taking the train, as well. I hate driving in the city, and the train station is right next to where I work. I wonder if my train goes to the same place as the one from CT? If so, we could arrange trains that arrive at about the same time, and then make our way across the city together [Smile]

Yeah Lash! Then you can get...teh KEYBOARD that started it all!

For that matter, I could probably borrow my Mom's minivan that weekend... That sucker seats seven.

Posted by CreativityKid on :

Count me in, definitely!

And sometime soon, we should do a New England LMB on-line chat.

hey Director lad... are you from the Boston area?I have been waiting for a con in the area..im in!

Posted by Director Lad on :

Well, I had written up a whole thing about how I didn't want to drive in the city and would take the train or the T etc., but then I looked at the website for the Bayside Expo Center and it looks pretty easy to get to. I'll probably drive all the way there, so we'll have to set up specific meeting times and places.

Dates, for reference on this thread, are September 30-October 2, which is a Friday-Sunday.

By non-New England standards, yes, I'm in the Boston area.

By New England standards, however, I'm from way out of town: a whole hour and forty-five minutes away in Amherst in Western MA.

I'm already getting excited for this con. I haven't been to a Boston con since the days when Creation was roaming the country, which is to say, when I was in junior high.

I live in Shrewsbury..I will be going. Email me at Ursaitalia@aol.com

Definitely count me in!

Loser, I think, mentioned interest a while back, and Danny, if you need a ride, we can probably car pool.

Cramer, too! Cool beans!

Posted by Loser Lad on :

Still too early to say *for sure*, but as of right now I'm planning on attending. I've already put in for vacation time for the end of September/beginning of October at work. If all goes as planned I'll be driving across from Buffalo, so if there's anyone not-too-far off the 90 that needs a lift I can make a side trip to pick people up.

Posted by Portfolio Boy on :

September 30 is PLENTY of time to plan. And Boston is WAY close enough for me.

COUNT ME IN!!!

The Spousal unit and I will probably drive to Portland and hop the Downester from there to Boston's North Station. Cru, wanna hook up in Portland & ride down together?

Any volunteers to meet me & wife (and maybe Cru) at station & play chauffer?

Is it too early to put together a planning committee to organzine weekend, or at least an LW get-together?

Weeeeeeeeee..... I'm TRES excited!!

Princess,

Are you talking about the Downeaster? If so that gets into North Station. The train Pov wouold take from Worchester goes into South Station.

From both, you would make your way onto the Red Line and go to the JFK stop. Then it is a 5 minute walk to the Bayside Expo Center (I think they sometimes run shuttle buses)

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

Well seeing that the convention is about a 10-15 minute walk from my apartment, I guess I'll have to go [Wink]

I'll have to check with my roommate, but I should have some floor space (and a couple of futon mattresses but no futons) for 2 people.

I do know one or two places that are good to eat in. And if MLLASH comes, I promise to show him the gay bars of Boston.

Ooooh Bastan! I taught at a computer camp one summer during college (98 or 99?) and had a lot of fun. If I can get out of work/school, I'd consider coming too - especially for the barhopping since I don't think I wasn't exactly legal last time [Razz]

Being in Vermont, and with family and friends in Mass, I'll be there.

Unless something huge blows up in my face.

This is great! I'm incredibly excited for this event. I was so bummed to have to miss the fun in San Diego last year, and equally bummed that I wouldn't be able to make San Diego this year, but Boston makes it alright.

I'm so glad that people are interested in going!

Gigi is coming over with me in May Quis. So when we get to Boston (just after my birthday) you'll have to let us buy the burgers at Mr Bartletts (sp?) [Big Grin]

Dont tell her but I'm trying to get her a really nice room up at Niagra Falls and stuff.

Hmmm ... very little info on the Wizard website so far; and the show isn't even on the calendar on the Bayside Expo website yet.

I've never been much of a con-goer, but since so many of my fellow New England Legion Worlders are planning to attend, I'll try to set aside at least one day for this; not going to decide which day until I see some sort of a schedule for con guests/events, though!

(I usually take the bus from Providence to South Station, and then use local mass transit when I want to go to Boston or Cambridge; much less stressful than driving, never mind parking ... )

Still it would be nice to come to Boston in September.

I really enjoyed the Bristol Convention last year.

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

Just so everyone knows. I checked with my roommate and it would be OK for 2 people (possibly 3) to use floor space to sleep for the convention. I do have a futon mattress and another mattress & some pillows for use. Blankets & sheets, you'd need to bring.

Around September, PM me about staying at my place

There is a Double Tree Hotel right by the Convention center.

Depending on when the Downeaster gets in, I could meet you at North Station and show you how the subway works.

Posted by Portfolio Boy on :

Quis,

Can you provide a phone # for the Double Tree? I'd like to call and check on rates.

Is North Station far from the convention center? Will I really need to use the sybway?

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

617-822-3600  for Doubletree.

Here's the hotel site

Here's the con center site, which says "The Bayside Expo and Executive Conference Center is just one mile from downtown Boston without all the hassle and with plenty of parking. An easy exit off the Southeast Expressway (I-93)--- located and next to the Commuter Rail and the JFK/UMass stop on the MBTA makes Bayside easily accessible for Event attendees, exhibitors and freight delivery... The MBTA Red Line and Old Colony (Plymouth/Kingston and Middleboro/Lakeville) Branch of the commuter rail system both stop at the UMass/JFK station directly across the street from us."

and
Here's the subway map

North Station is where the green and orange lines meet (the northern of the two) and JFK/UMass is where the two red branches meet in the southeast, so you have to change at either Park (green) or Downtown Crossing (orange).

The Con Center's at 200 Mt Vernon St; the hotel's at 240 Mt. Vernon.
You can see how close they are here.

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

I prefer the Green Line to the Orange line (Greater frequency of trains - in general, less walking when going to the Red Line)

So far, I've found two state campgrounds. One you need a boat to get to, but This one is probably more practical, although its 14.3 miles away.

Posted by Quislet, Esq. on :

And with that campground, you don't have to drive through Boston proper to get to the Expo Center
