Does Cafe Cramer serve tea? I'm rather partial to a Yunan Puerh.

Had to look that one up*, but if it exists in the galaxy, the Café will serve it.

* This tea is a so called “Red Tea“ from the chinese province of Yunan. Pu-Erh tea is more or less post fermented and this is a sign that the tea is still passing after fermentation which gives it a strong earthy taste, dark cup with an intensive strong flavour.

Well FC, just come and visit me and I will brew you an exquisite cup of Puerh tea. Puerh comes either loose leaf or in pressed bricks. I get it at the Imperial Tea Court in the San Francisco Ferry building. There is not just one Puerh. but many - they are prized among tea connoisseurs. They range from about $50 a pound to over $400 a pound. The more aged the more valuable. Since I take a ferry each day to get to work and to get home, I can stop in. The nice thing is that for $3.00, I can have a cup of any tea I want, including the $400 puerh. It's very musty tasting but I love it. Here is their website. It's full of information useful for a revered institution such as Cafe Cramer.

Very interesting. So you can buy the bricks and age them further - I may put my long term commodity investments into Puerh rather than bottles of scotch.

FC, I thought of you this very morning when I arose to discover the coffee jar was empty of its usual contents (Peet's French Roast). Luckily, we had an emergency backup of some whole bean Trader Joe's Tanzanian pea berry, which isn't half bad, even with our not-very-good rotary grinder.

I have a new caffeinated obsession though. While dining last week at a local Japanese restaurant, I was served the most wonderful green tea. It's brewed color was more golden/wheat than green, and it was smooth and mellow, but complex and almost smokey, not the harsh, greeny flavor of so much of the product on the market these days. Unfortunately, the server, while she agreed it was excellent tea, couldn't tell me its source. Not because her English was poor, she was just clueless. I tried the Tazo China Green Tips, which is a huge step in the right direction, although it is still a bit harsh and shallow compared to my new gold standard. Anyone have any recommendations for the perfect green tea?

I'd say call that restaurant and ask to speak to the kitchen manager. Maybe they'll tell you what the brand is. Or go on a trial-and-error run to an Oriental food store. The green teas I've had have been unexceptional, but I haven't pursued them beyond grocery stores and a few restaurants. Perhaps there is something in how it's been brewed as well.

Waking up to a house devoid of coffee sends a chill down my spine! I've sunk pretty low to get my caffeine fix.

I'm in the mood for the catch of the day, pan-fried with a buerre blanc, and a steaming bowl of chowder. Can you do it?

FC, my problem with coffee is that it smells divine but tastes like crap, so we've never gotten along! You gotta coffee that tastes as good as it smells--and maybe also has some hard liquor in it for some extra oomph?

If so, I'll take 10! [Big Grin]

The Café Cramer, being beyond reality, can do anything. Food and beverage wise, that is.

Fresh halibut filet and lobster chowder coming up for Semi.

Lardy, perhaps the best solution, if you don't enjoy any of the coffees, is to have a shot of coffee-scented vodka. (We only offer small quantities of liquor since SHAKES provides.)

Caffeine!

Well, I like my coffee black and steaming hot, so I shall indulge myself a third cup this morning...

I need something appropriately decadent for one committed to a life (well, a month) of leisure.

Nice! Hey, mebbe you should amp things up liquor-wise and run SHAKES outta business! Legion World's a little too nicey-nicey for my tastes on the business front! Where's that wipe-out-the competition cut-throat business savvy at, eh?

Lardy, your "Star Patron" status at SHAKES is still probationary. You don't want to mess this up. The Empress, guardian of SHAKES has a real mean streak. I shudder even thinking about it.

Lardy, there are wheels within wheels. You don't know what's going on in the back rooms. And no, you can't peek.

Something decadent for Shakespeare - maybe a Brown Cow, the way my grandmother made it, with ice cream added to the milk, coffee liqueur and nutmeg - and I'll add gold sprinkles on top. And some very high calorie pastries on the side.
