I can remember the first time I saw that video. I saw it at my grandparents' house. I remember liking the song a LOT... even though it wasn't "typical" music of the 80s... it was weird... it had a geeky panache that spoke to me... it said to me, "These freaks know what they are talking about"...

I first actually came into contact with the TOM TOM CLUB... possibly via SNL in the 70s? (Son of a bitch, the SEVENTIES??? *glares at self in the mirror* That was a LONG time ago...) But whatever, I am POSITIVE I heard GENIUS OF LOVE long before "Once in a Lifetime" by Talking Heads. I actually own the GENIUS OF LOVE 45!

That line, "If you see him, please remind him, my lucky boyfriend..." stayed with me for a long time for some reason. And that bass? SHUT UP, that BASS kicked FACE.

While it was true Tom Tom Club and Talking Heads were like nothing I'd heard before, I soon found myself tits-deep in the standard 84-86 offerings (it would still be several months before I went to college, met some fags, got a fake ID, and went to a gay bar- which totally veered my music learning into another direction we could call the "New Order")...

But I was still in High School when THIS ditty made a big ol' splash on MTV:

I still have this 45 too. Even back then I knew it was an ode to drugs (coke), despite my innocence (which was soon to be thrown to the curb the September after graduation-- I blame this song!!).

*sigh* Fun memories.

My memories of the Talking Heads go back to late 1978 and "Take Me to the River." I liked their version, with its doomy bass and frantic vocals. (David Byrne always sounded like he was on the verge of a nervous breakdown.)

The Talking Heads never had many hits grace the Top 40, but, when they did, their songs were catchy, innovative, and energetic: "Burning Down the House," "Wild Wild Life," "And She Was."

"Once in a Lifetime," though probably their most recognized song, didn't reach the Hot 100.

I can't call myself a fan of theirs, but I always appreciated it when they released a new song or video. They kept pop music interesting.

No, but "This Is Not" could be a Talking Heads song title. [Smile]

I saw the Tom Tom Club play in my hometown about a dozen years ago. Never saw TH, but a friend of mine once ran into David Byrne in a men's room in Poughkeepsie.
