Two years ago Lian Harper was killed in Cry for Justice. One year ago she was erased from the DC Universe. In light of that unfortunate two year anniversary I decided to ask Devin Grayson if she’d be interested in doing an interview for the Roytoys website about her work with Roy and Lian Harper.
Devin Grayson has done work on the Titans, Nightwing, Relative Heroes, and co-wrote the JLA/Titans miniseries the Technis Imperative. However, Miss Grayson is widely recognized as the one writer who ever truly understood Roy’s character, and Lian’s, since… well, ever.
Last year I interviewed Arsenal artist Rick Mays for Roytoys through Facebook. This time I sent Miss Grayson some questions and she replied with the answers. Valancy Gilliam, the creator of Roytoys, posted the interview a few hours ago on the website. Miss Grayson shares her take on why Lian is a viable character, the realistic aspects behind the father/daughter relationship, how she imagined Lian would grow up, and her research into Navajo culture and her own personal life experiences that went into her work.
Regarding the editorial mandates to get rid of children or spouses, because they 'make the character unrelatable,' I think this line sums it up perfectly;
"It’s ridiculous, but it only takes one divorced guy with daddy issues to screw it up for the rest of us."
Ha!

I have father issues and all I want to do is write about a positive single father experience.
Why can't they be more like me? Beautiful, beautiful me.
I'm sorry what were we talking about?

Your beauty might require its own thread!

I can just picture her final plans for Lian - noted criminologist, loving wife, her and Roy checking out the same women (hee!) - ahhh. What could have been (or may yet to be, for that matter).
