OCC or out of character context is the term for discussing the direction this story will go. This thread is for planning, plotting, and talking out of character. The goal of this thread is to provide an accessible source of communication for all contributors. We need to discuss a few things before we begin writing the story.

1. We need to know who is contributing or is willing to lend us your characters for use in our stories. After we get a count of the players we may need basic information about your characters.

2. Please submit ideas for where your characters would like to travel. For example, Question Lad would like to travel to Brazil.

3. Rules- Please follow all the rules of this forum when contributing to the story. The tone of this story will be that of animation. Movies such as Mulan, Anastasia, and The Road to El Dorado give an idea of how I want this to be carried out. What we are aiming for here is quality, so as a group we will be creating specific rules for this story. For example, it will be against the rules of this thread to kill other players characters without their permission.

Please submit any questions, comments, or concerns to this thread.

For #2, Invisible Brainiac would love to tour Southeast Asia. Cambodia, Thailand, and of course the Philippines.

And if there's time, a side trip to Nepal!

I guess we should decide how many playable characters each writer is allowed to have. I am thinking a maximum of two characters per each writer, excluding of course characters created by the group as a whole.

What are your thoughts?

Is this intended to be a Roleplay or a tag team thread? Interesting concept!

It sounds like this will be on Earth, which makes sense now that trade with Earth has opened up following 'the Gold Watch'. Those that have never been or haven't been there in awhile might like to see it.

Let me think about a character I'd want in the story. With Novella so intense, I'm not sure it would be good to commit Cobalt or Lolita right now, even though it sounds like a fun idea for Cobie. Luckily I have dozens of other Alts and Gen-Cars in my arsenal.

I'm in. Not looking to go anywhere in particular, since this is my first time to Earth...anywhere will be interesting and exciting.

I am glad to see other participants!

We will probably be starting the trip in Fawcett City. The Sivana Family name has a lot of power behind it, and Emily is going to use it to her advantage on this trip. Even if that means visiting her crazy family.

This is going to be fun. After the list of real world places is up, I can provide some background on each. We can tweak that info to fit the LMB universe.

For that matter, given the abilities of IB, Emily Sivana and Question Lad, we can insert places as we go along and it would still make sense in-story.

As of now, this is the current list of places. For now they will be in alphabetical order, not in the order we are visiting. After the dashes are specific sites in that location that are of interest.

The List of Real World Places
Brazil- city of Belem, Amazon River, city of Manaus
Cambodia- (Please fill in Invisible Brainiac)
Ecuador- Vilcabamba, legendary lost city of the Incas

I wonder if we can do something with this list of places. Like, maybe the gang starts out on a normal road trip, but along the way discover a puzzle to solve. Maybe it can be as simple as collecting an item from each location.

I like the idea of a scavenger hunt. I hope to provide some exciting subplots. If we start out a normal road trip, is there any other North American city, real or fictional, that someone would like to visit?

Thanks, and thanks for creating the list.

Hmm, if we go through America first, how about:

Would anyone mind if I used a brand new character for this? I have several I've wanted to use for awhile but haven't had the chance to use yet.

I have a huge backstory and fully realized personality quirks but have just never introduced the character before, even though he's kind of been in the background in Cobie's stories for years.

I agree. Though would anyone mind if our itinerary grows as we go along?

Now for the plot: the road trip is easy enough to set up. But how do we steer the characters towards a scavenger hunt thing?

Maybe in Vegas, our merry band of adventurers can encounter a fortune teller who sets the whole thing off.

What's the rationale though? Why would everyone go on a scavenger hunt?

Well, Earth has been at odds with the UP for years. Very recently, because of Cobie and Timberwolf, some spy games engineered the downfall of Earth's major coporations and the common people regaining the power there. This was in my onevision "the Gold Watch". I know I plan to follow up on some socio-economic specifics but the gist of it is Earth is now opened up to the UP for the first time in 8 years. Trade is resuming and it may soon rejoin the UP. Many sentients from all over the galaxies want to visit there to 'see' it; afterall, it is one of the mother planets of civilization.

For the LMB, the impetus may be some want to see it or the first time or go back to it for the first time in years. That's an innocent enough explanation.

Of course, there may be more specific reasons the individuals on the road trip may have for going. For my character, I'd say maybe Cobie personally asked IB if his "friend" could tag along as a personal favor, without explaining why.

Angdar will definitely have reasons for wanting to go with them once he hears that they are going to Earth. Something to do with The Legend of the Hawkman from Thanagar.

Maybe we could make it a subplot instead, Egypt being the most obvious place that comes to mind. We can easily incorporate bits other genres to make this more interesting. I am considering incorporating some Tournament aspects into this because they are fun.

On that note, I guess it's time to start posting character bios.

Main Character #1: Emily Sivana
Codename (s): Red Arrow
Gender: Female
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Blue
Relations: Justin Sivana (father), Alison Knight (deceased), Alexander Sivana (paternal uncle), Venus Sivana (paternal aunt), countless extended family members.
Superpowers: No natural superpowers, but knows the equation that grants intangibility which her family typically uses to walk through walls.
Weapons: Traditionally a bow and arrow
Fighting Classification: Dual Class Street-leveler/Scientist
Statistical Base: 20 (Choose a number between 1 and 10 and multiply that by your character's power. A normal human civilian's base would be 10, a New God's would be 100)
Intelligence Stat Base: 40 (Choose a number between 1 and ten and multiply that by your character's power. A normal human civilian's intelligence is 10 and a Celestial's would be 100)

Main Character #2: Sebastian Sage
Codename(s): Question Lad
Gender: Male
Hair: Dark
Eyes: Brown
Relations: Unknown, lots of rumors
Superpowers: The ability to absorb the powers, skills, and memories of organic beings by touch. His power is more effective on humanoids than non-humanoids. Too many memories can cause migraines.
Weapons: N/A
Fighting Classification: Energy Absorber (aka Sponge)
Statistical Base: 30 when at base potential, gains points when he absorbs others.
Intelligence Stat Base: 20

Main Character #1: Angdar Fel
Codename (s):
Gender: Male
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Blue
Relations: Parents (Deceased), Brother (Deceased)
Superpowers: Flight, but way of natural wings. Enhanced strength, durability.
Weapons: Melee weapons crafted from Thanagarian Nth metal (their use, and why others have a next to impossible time using them properly will be explained.)
Fighting Classification: Flyer, Brawler. (Think of a teenage Hawkman with something to prove.)

Posted by Angdar Fel on :

As far as the stats thing...no real idea.

Posted by Emily Sivana on :

I think your character would have a statistical base of 40 because he has super-strength and can fly. If his intelligence is average, then he would have an Intelligence Stat Base of 10.

Posted by Angdar Fel on :

Probably more like 13/14, as he had to be above average intelligence to get into the Wingmen training on Thanagar. By no means a genius or anything, just a bit smarter than average.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Main Character: Renly Fox
Codename(s): Unknown (for now)
Gender: Male
Hair: Brown, curly. Has thin moustache and pointy beard on his chin only (looking like Errol Flynn / Oliver Queen).
Eyes: Green
Relations: Unknown
Superpowers: Believed to be none (remains ambiguous however)
Weapons: blaster (gun),
rapier (sword), dagger, various tools
Fighting Classification: Duel class, street-leveler / unknown
Statistical Base: 20
Intelligence Stat Base: 40

Note, that Renly's story will become clearer as the story goes on. Until then most of this remains a mystery.

I have no intention of having the character battle anyone tournament style as that does not fit his personality.

All that is known is Cobalt told Invisible Brainiac this was an old friend that 'would love to see Earth' and is a 'spice merchant', though the last bit was clearly a lie by Cobalt told with the intent that IB would know it was a lie. Renly also seems to have a firm understanding of space travel and cosmic geography. His age is a little unclear but he is at least forty.

I like this idea. That also saves us the time and effort of coming up with a rationale for the scavenger hunt.

Emily, maybe we could make this a subplot between Emily, Sebastian and Invisible Brainiac.

IB is an Earth native, and he'd volunteer for the mission because he's always wanted to return to Earth and experience it. He has a bucket list of must-see places.

For the Tournament style aspect, how about when the LMBers start their road trip, they are seen by an enemy of the LMB? Or perhaps even an Earth native who recognizes them, and fears they're on a fact-finding mission that will lead to an LMB invasion of Earth.

Some Earth groups could then activate agents who are to engage and capture the LMB.

We could drop the Scavenger Hunt subplot, but still retain numerous battles in order to have a more relaxed feel to the story.

Maybe towards the middle, the LMBers capture one of their attackers, realize what has happened, and confront the persons behind these attacks to explain their situation and get them to back off.

What do you think?

Compiling the character bios into one post:

Invisible Brainiac
Real name: Unknown
Gender: Male
Eyes: Dark Brown
Hair: Dark Brown
Relations: Unknown
Superpowers: Light powers. Can split into seven light forms; flight; light constructs, visual illusions. See IB's LMB Wiki entry for more detailed info.
Weapons: Has some skill with throwing knives and the quarterstaff, but rarely uses them.
Fighting classification: Energy Caster, I guess. But IB prefers to use unarmed self-defense tactics and uses his light powers to evade and disable opponents (i.e. blind them), rather than seriously hurt them.
Statistical base: 50? IB's pretty powerful, but haven't really determined his power levels yet.
Intelligence: 40 (name is misleading, as IB isn't THAT smart. His intelligence is more of maturity and people skills).

I think we could actually have both. The scavenger hunt could be an optional subplot in one locations. In regards to the Tournament aspects, I agree we should have some enemies to fight, I already have one in mind. I do think it would be cool if (maybe in Brazil) there could be an optional mini-Tournament and characters could win prizes.

I think we might as well start the story because we have to fit our subplots into or alongside the main plot.

We could probably have the scavenger hunt be a subplot in Tubbataha, Philippines. Since it's a rich marine area, the contest could be to capture on film a list of animals and other sights.

Why not, these stories do take time. Would you like to do the honors?

Btw, based on Cobie's post above, the timing could probably be set before the Dark Oval novella. What do you think? We still don't know exactly how it will turn out, so probably best not to have it be after.

Posted by Angdar Fel on :

Trying to fit it in before the Oval story might be a bit tight. I'd defer to Cobie on that one...if it's even possible.

Angdar could just have shown up before they leave...it's kind of open as to when he can arrive on LW.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

The problem, though, is that both IB and Cobie are deep in Dark Oval territory. IB can be in seven places at once, but with the stakes as high as they are, it wouldn't make much sense for him to head to Earth while the Dark Oval is going on.

We could hold it after, and just be careful not to mention anything about the outcome of the Dark Oval.

I'll defer to Cobie on this as well [Razz]

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

I'd say get started and see how continuity matches up once we're into the story. With IB involved in both, its clear it can't happen simulteaneously.

I'd avoid mention of the Novella with only mentioning 'UP problem with the Dark Oval' if need be. Earth and the D.O. are on opposite sides of the UP so they dont have a big effect or influence on one another, especially since anything UP related from a buerocratic standpoint takes place on Weber's World or Legion World.

Posted by Angdar Fel on :

Outside of your character, none are directly in the Oval itself.

So, that falls on your head if it's after. Simple enough, just have IB not wanting to talk about anything straight out of the gate and leave it at that.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I'll just insert a mention in one of IB's POVs that he needs a well-deserved vacation, and leave it at that.

By the way Emily, is Sebastian an Earth native as well? His bio on the LMB Wiki states that he hails from Salvador, but I'm not sure if he's supposed to be from Earth.

Posted by Emily Sivana on :

He is not a native of Earth. I named that planet Salvador because it's Spanish for Savior.

I know it might be awhile before we get there, but since New York is on the travel guide I want to bring your attention to this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mra5PkN3Xqw

Therefore, I think being genre-savvy perhaps our group can stay in Staten Island? I also think it would be funny if Sebastian expects New York to be like it is in the 70s/80s only to find that Hell's Kitchen is gentrified.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Thanks for the clarification, Emily. I'll take a look at the video later, but I like your idea. We could have the group looking for spots in NYC that appear in comics and shows, and not find them.

Also, the way I write IB's character, he's the type who'd wander into a bad neighborhood or a bar and gleefully start a fight just so he can experience one. He'd probably be slightly disappointed that Hell's Kitchen isn't as violent as he imagined it to be.

Posted by Emily Sivana on :

I like the way you are writing Sebastian. I've been using Stan Lee's classic quote "With great power comes great responsibility" as my guiding point in writing him. Though I think his morals would cave to someone like Felicia Hardy.

I'm thinking of testing out the Stat system soon to see what role it should have in our game.

Villain #1:

Thanks, Emily. One of the best compliments I could ever hope to receive is that I "get" someone else's character. Your responses in the Ask Question Lad thread made it a lot easier to get a handle on him, though.

Btw, I've PMed Abin Quank already but he hasn't replied yet. I think real life is keeping him pretty busy.

Whew, that looks like a pretty powerful villain. Can't wait for his appearance.

By the way, what are our next steps in Fawcett City?

Is anyone planning on doing some more posts to flesh out their characters? I'm good with IB for the moment.

Posted by Emily Sivana on :

My latest post has made it so that they are planning what to do next. I'm thinking we skip the dinner scene and go straight to "So we're roommates", which allows the male characters to interact with each other. In China my class was forced to room with different people "to get to know each other better", which was interesting. With four guys on the trip it's practical for two guys to share a room.

The next day will be mostly a free day. Emily will get the permits, Sebastian will get a new phone, etc. Angdar Fel told me he wanted his character to explore Fawcett City.

All I know for now is that I want our heroes to get a place to rest in Staten Island because I want to keep the tradition of no super-hero fights ever occurring in Staten Island. Thank you for checking in and I look forward to your next post in the story. Speaking of which, I guess it's time to organize our path. I have re-arranged the list to group the countries by geographic location.

South America
Brazil- city of Belem, Amazon River, city of Manaus
Ecuador - Vilcabamba, legendary lost city of the Incas
Peru - Machu Picchu
Asia
Cambodia- The Angkor Archaeological Park
China - the Forbidden City; the Great Wall
Nepal- ancient city of Bhaktapur in the Kathmandu Valley; the Himalayas
Philippines- the Banaue Rice Terraces, the Puerto Prinsesa Subterranean River, the Tubbataha Reefs Marine Park
Thailand- the ruins of Ayutthaya
Africa
Egypt- Great Pyramids
North America
USA - Las Vegas, New York, the Grand Canyon, Florida

I wont keep Renly entirely mysterious that long.

Do not worry about it. We're entering a bit of an interlude so we can decide where to go first. I want to use Flashend to test out the Stat system and that might slow us down a bit too.

Those sound like good plans, to me. I like the "so we're roommates" bit, to further flesh out the guys and highlight their differences from one another.

Thanks for rearranging the itinerary, Emily.

I actually think we can afford to take our time. It is a road trip, after all. Things won't have to speed up until much later in our story.

I'm going to be busy most of tonight and tomorrow, so I have decided to post this now. We need to decide what our next destination will be. Therefore, I have a couple of questions for our group.

1) Which continent would you like to visit next?

2) How do we want to usually travel?

3) What would you like to do in the next location?

They could always be using Angdars Thanagarian Wingman cruiser.

I suggest finishing North America first. Fawcett City is in the American Midwest, so why not Vegas and the Grand Canyon?

Then on to New York, then Florida, and then South America.

To do in Vegas - see the famous shows and hit the casinos. Also sounds like a nice place to get into a tussle with some spies. For the Grand Canyon, how about a campout?

Posted by Emily Sivana on :

That makes a good amount of sense. That route is logical and gives us plenty of options.

I would like to test the Stat system, but I want it to feel natural and not forced. I would like to set up a battle between Invisible Brainiac and Flashend before the group leaves Fawcett City.

IB's set to visit the Floating Garden and the Haunted Railway Tunnel. Either place would be good for a battle. I can get IB there, and you can write the battle [Smile]

Posted by Emily Sivana on :

Thank you, I think the Haunted Railway Tunnel would be a good choice.

I'll get to posting that soon [Smile] Just have some stuff to take care of now, it's a long holiday in the Philippines.

I understand, I've been unusually lenient with punctuality for this story because of time zone differences. I also understand people are busy because of Halloween, but in a couple of days I would like to see some more progress.

Not sure I get this whole Tournament/stat stuff...

Busy tonight with Halloween and the kids, plus a funeral home visit.

Will try to get something up tomorrow, but no guarantees.

Not 100% sure what is really happening at this point...

Is there a particular time table you have in mind, Emily? I'm not aware of any, but I'm sure the four of us can make an arrangement that would allow the story to flow at the pace you want it to.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

By the way, would you all want to meet up at the Floating Garden? I've set it up so that IB can meet up with the others there; or IB can also head to the Railway Tunnel by himself.

Posted by Dev - Em on :

Angdar is there as well right now, so they can meet up at any time now.

Since everyone is curious, I may be under time constraints because I may be returning to China in February. I would be studying abroad until June.I am unsure if you can access Legion World in Mainland China. If anyone knows please tell me so I don't worry about the commitments I made to this website.

Therefore, I would like to finish this story by January 31st.

Hope that's not directed at me, Emily. I try to post when I can, but I make no committments to get something up by any date in particular. I'm just too busy with real life: work is crazy and my wife is due any day now with our second baby.

If you're worried that I can't get posts up by a certain time, I'll bow out of the roleplay if that's a major concern. Otherwise, I really just intended to throw a post in here and there with no real agenda. My character is more of a supporting character in this story than a main one.

Let me know what you think.

Emily, I know there are ways to access the Internet on mainland China. I do understand that you want to finish the story before you go, though.

The only reason I can post as often as I do now is because of my current job. I may be leaving it for another one in December.

If you want, I'm willing to set up a timetable that I can try to adhere to. I'd originally just intended to post as I can, but I'm willing to work something out so we can finish. I find the Road Trip thread very enjoyable and wouldn't want to bow out either.

Posted by Emily Sivana on :

Let us not talk about bowing out of anything just yet. I think what is going on is a clash of styles. I have participated in and ran RPG forums and Tournaments with a great deal of structure, and this website is very different.

I tend to feel uncomfortable writing other players characters because on other forums it was against the rules unless the player gave you permission. I'm trying to get over it, but it will take some time because that rule is so common on RPG forums that it is in my subconscious. I worry about writing characters wrong and people getting upset at me.

I want to thank Invisible Brainiac for putting up with my wants and uncertainties. He is far more creative than I will ever be, and this is going smoothly due to his efforts.

I think we should continue the way things are and do a progress evaluation around New Years. It is fully possible that we could accomplish a great deal more than we expect to and the setting of due dates could be rendered unnecessary.

Emily, this might be helpful to you when you go to China: http://www.chinatravel.net/forum/Internet-access-in-China-proxies-VPNs-and-other-solutions/3430.html

I have some friends there right now; I'll ask them how they manage to access Facebook and other sites.

I'm glad I'm being a big help to you, Emily. Honestly, I don't have any problem with the clash of styles [Smile] I find it refreshing that you're taking this so seriously, and you have certainly given me a lot of ideas on writing. As far as creativity goes, just the fact that you've been bringing up issues such as social status on Legion World is highly creative in my book.

I also think the four of us are making a great team so far. I'd certainly feel that the quality of our story will suffer if even one of us bows out.

Posted by Emily Sivana on :

Yes, I have been trying to pin down what makes Legion World work. Sebastian reflects a lot of my subconscious thoughts. He's from a society modeled on the days Portugal and Spain were in a Golden Age because I created him while writing a research paper about colonial Brazil.

I like how Invisible Brainiac and Question Lad are very different,it has shades of Superman and Batman.

Since it is Invisible Brainiac's birthday, I think it is time to have a little fun. I want to put together a suggested playlist for our Road Trip. Don't put too much effort into this, just think of songs that can fit specific locations, people, and/or events. I can't think of anything specific yet, but I will probably stick to songs related to animation and Internet parodies.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Hi Emily,

Love how Question Lad reflects a different age. And yeah, the story potential between him and IB is great!

Thanks for celebrating my birthday with the songs [Wink] Hm... Are you going to be uploading music?

Here are some right off the bat:

Beautiful Day, U2
Our Lives, the Calling
Raise Your Glass, Pink
At the Beginning, Anastasia soundtrack

and why not a parody of Rebecca Black's Friday?

Additional animation song: how about the opening song of Disney's Beauty and the Beast, and also Disney's Aladdin's I Can Show You the World?

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

By the way, would you like me to continue from where you left off on Road Trip? Or would you like to go ahead and write the tournament portion? I'm sure you can handle IB well.

I'd be glad to help, but I'm not quite sure how the Tournament portion will run. And I honestly would love to see how you write IB. [Smile]

Posted by Emily Sivana on :

I will go ahead and write the next part. I have already did the statistical work that is the basis of that story part.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Nice! I love how you wrote Invisible Brainiac - a logical appraisal of the situation tempered by his morals.

And the Golden Helmet sounds like a good way to lead the heroes on around the world. We can use it as a reason to head to Vegas, and then on to other locations if we want.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

I'm curious about the statistical work you mentioned, though. I think it has to do with the stats we decided on earlier, but how does it factor into the story exactly?

Posted by Emily Sivana on :

It serves as my guideline to writing battles. I try to go for things that are cinematic and this helps me figure out exactly what a character should do. I was thinking it could either be our combat system or the characters could visit an actual tournament arena. I was thinking if people competed in a tournament their characters could win fabulous prizes, and the more powerful challengers defeated the better the prizes could get.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Hmmm, interesting. What determines the winner of a battle? This is certainly something new, and I'm curious to learn more about it. I'm not really sure I understand how it guides a character's actions in a scene.

Posted by Emily Sivana on :

Thank you! I enjoy collaborating with all of you. This has been very fun so far.

When the points fall under 10 the character loses. To sum it up neatly, I use the Randbetween function on Excel to get the statistical results. I first determine who attacks first, then how many times they attack per turn, and then the strength of each attack. Characters can attack up to ten times per turn, and the strength is the current statistical base divided by ten.

The statistical system might be too complicated for our purposes. I just want to keep things exciting. I am worried about boring you guys with romantic subplots and want to keep things balanced.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

wow, that sounds like a good way to keep a story going. that is, the plot can continue in the same way even if a character wins or loses - but the scenes turn out very differently.

I actually wouldn't mind some romantic subplots, if you do have any in mind.

Here is a link to the Wikipedia description of the Helmet of Mambrino: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mambrino

Sebastian owns mines in a town named after Cervantes, so he believes the helmet is a fantasy. I'll leave it up to group consensus to decide whether or not this is a real artifact in our story.

Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :

Thanks for the link, Emily.

I'm ok with the Helmet of Mambrino turning out to be just another beautiful artifact that doesn't actually work. We could have the Helmet turn up as early as Vegas or New York, actually.
