As a self-proclaimed creative, Micro Heroes have always intrigued me. You know, those little pixel-drawn renditions of super-heroes fans make themselves and post around the Internet based on various templates? While I liked them, the urge to dive in and make my own never hit me. Something about the proportions never appealed to me. Then I found template bodies based on Bruce Timm's designs from the DC Animated Universe. I love that style an unhealthy amount.
Consider me converted! I've been working on these on and off for a few years and decided to start posting them to motivate myself to finish more. I'd like to one day have made a representation of every Legion character in every costume ever depicted. Below are my first offerings. I've got dozens more done but I'm waiting until I either have an entire team finished or every variation of a character finished before I post more sets.
Disclaimers: I don't own the Legion. I recognize that not every costume variation or Elseworlds is included yet. While I designed the costumes myself, most of the faces/heads were kitbashed together using other people's work.

There's so much interesting trivia when you sit down and look over the history of these outfits. They all have so many repeating motifs, usually based off the Adventure and Cockrum eras. And it's interesting to see who ends up with more costume variations depending on the continuity.

I love costume doodling as well and these are a fun excuse for me to really scrutinize and enjoy the different details other artists have put into their own designs and interpretations.
A big perk to taking on an overwhelming project like this is to have a handy resource to see all the different costumes a Legionnaire has worn. I enjoy that stuff so much when other sites do it for the X-Men and other heroes.

I definitely have plans to get to them, as well as the other future Legions glimpsed in the Adult Legion stories and the Dead Earth annuals. Probably once I exhaust the core Legionnaires I plan to start doing series of teams (like 1,000,000) and also going back and doing civilian clothes and more minor costume variations (the kind which are more artist to artist and less creative intent).

Yay! Now I'm totally wondering what Adventure Era "Deputy Gim" would look like with Magic Wars era side holster pocket thingie on him!
Posted by Candlelight on :
Gim has had some beautiful costumes, hasn't he? I particularly like #5 & 6 in the first row. It was Giffen who designed #6 from that era, I think. I loved his costumes then and during the early TMK run.
I really like his first suit, too. With a stand-up collar and a head piece in red or green, it would have been prefec. I think.
Very fun!

I believe Giffen designed both costumes, though I may be mistaken about #5. I do believe it was during the "New DC" phase around LSH #300 when Giffen was still on the title his first go.
I've always had a weird fondness for the Magic Wars costumes too. There's something about overly complicated outfits that I aesthetically love.

More are coming, Sharky! I promise.
Posted by Candlelight on :
That's funny, because I think of them as extremely simple in design! All three have big, simple shapes and straight geometric lines - no capes, no underwear, no pads and little flesh or lots of colors.
The first is yellow, green and red. Five is red and blue. #6 is red and 2 shades of blue. The white and black are kept to a minimum and serve as neutral accents.
I'm especially fond of costumes that look like cloth, too, not the painted on versions.
Interesting.

Of Lu's costumes, which are vast, I like best the last of the reboot designs with the half skirt and white tights (#10 in the first row) and the much earlier purple and gold body suit that spits into the two colors (#4).
I really like her current/original one (last one in the second row), as well. To update it a bit, I'd remove the cape and boots and give her gold full tights with the skirt in the front shortened and then, lengthen it in the back for a tapered look. sigh

My three favorite looks for Tinya are her her Phase costume that she wore in .LEGION/.REBELS, her reboot outfit with the cape and 'white outside and black inside' body suit and finally, the Prime version of the pantsuit.
Those are the first row, #4, sort of, and #7 of the same row. The last one is #1 in the second row.
I might try to update the looks using your basics, for some of my favorites, if you don't mind.

For Garth, third row, #s 1, 2 and 6. I prefer Garth as kind of grungy, actually.
Imra, her currant look, #8 in the first row, and numbers 6 & 7 in the second row, although I really like her hair in the ponytail of #1 of the second row. That was Primeboot, wasn't it? I disliked that SG but liked the hair by Kitson. I love the short hair she has now, though, too. It just seems to fit her age and personality in the retroboot and she reminds me of Sam, whom I love, from SG1.

Thanks, Candle. Yeah, I put a lot of needless pixel layers in sometimes because I just think it helps make the colors and shadows pop better.
And while I'm completely Adobe product and Photoshop/Illustrator trained, I use oldschool MSPaint from like Windows98 to make these. True story! It's just the easiest for me to work with given the punitive subject matter.

Wow! The most diverse set yet!
Posted by Exnihil on :
I think I know all the eras you're pulling from, but there's a couple I'm not 100% on.
The looks that precede the "Legion of Super-Heroes" cartoon... are they from the "Superman" animated series?
And the ones that are almost an echo of the original look, with a couple minor variations (placed near the end of each of your postings) are they from the "Superboy's Legion" elseworld?
Again... great job!
Posted by Future on :
You got it, Exnihil! The bottom rows or last ones are typically the animated versions followed by Elseworlds. The ones you mentioned are indeed from the Superman and JLU cartoons with the final one being from Superboy's Legion.
Sometimes I jump the order of some of the Elseworlds around, specifically the Arthur Legion costumes like for Cham by moving it to after the Preboot/TMK/Retroboot, just to appease my sense of balance. I didn't want to create a third row for Cham just yet but I also didn't want the image so bottom-heavy or to split groups.
I'm strange like that!
Should I start including some type of labeling system?
Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :
Yeah, I'd appreciate labels, though I can figure most of them out.
Posted by superboymddjr on :
hey where's Cham's present costume..the one with short sleeve that is now regularly appearing in LSH? I admit...I found the short sleeve looks good on Cham. *gulp*

That's the fifth one over, top row! It technically appeared before his short-lived, long sleeve variant so that's where I inserted it chronologically.

Yep! She made a cameo in the series closer, Dark Victory parts 1 and 2, as one of several new Legionnaires in the background. Dawnstar and Chemical King also made quick cameos, but XS had a full body shot in the show. I actually really love the look. I didn't think I'd ever like Jenni getting a new costume but that first departure won me over.
Posted by Exnihil on :
I don't know why I like it, but for some reason I dig the kneepads on Jenni's DnA costumes. I can't think of a functional reason why she's need them, but I still think they look cool.
Once again, Future, hats off to you for all the work that went into these. I can't imagine the number of hours you must have spent tracking down all the tiny details, but it's well appreciated. Great work!

quote:Originally posted by Mystery Lad: I don't remember the bald Jenni at all. From Legion Worlds? I need to reread those...
It's actually a head mask/cover with goggles she wore for Legion Worlds #4. By the next time she appeared it was gone, presumably discarded or destroyed while battling Robotica off-panel. It's my fault that it blends in and looks like she's bald. It was a tannish-light brown color and I'm afraid I didn't differentiate the coloring enough from Jenni's skin hue.

Some Notes! I got so excited that I got Brainy done that I posted him before Superboy. Whoops! Luckily, depending on the continuity (like the current one), that isn't actually a flub at all. Since the super cousins kind of throw off the order of joining anymore, I've decided to post the Superpeople all at once. The two Superboys are finished and shortly I'll get to posting Supergirl.
I recognize that several outfits are missing for both Clark and Conner. However, on Clark especially, the thought of getting every outfit and variation for them is kind of daunting even if I was only doing his Legion appearances. Plus, I have to confess, I'm not the biggest fan of either character so these became kind of a chore after awhile (hence my slowness to post).
While I hit just a few major outfits for Clark, I tried to hit every little variation Conner has worn when he teamed-up with the Legion, much like I did with Kid Q and XS. The forthcoming Supergirl will also follow this formula, which is why she's not quite done yet.
Sorry for rambling. I love explaining myself, apparently. Hope you enjoy!

I like Conner's #3, #6 and #10 outfits, especially #10 and I don't remember it from the stories.
And I've always loved the Kingdom Come Legion Superboy look!
Edit: since you added Supergirl while I was posting - Matrix, whom I ended up not liking much as a character, and the Kingdom Come design, with the slight Andromeda feel.

Kon did get that suit, you're right. He never wore it though and since I was putting the Kingdom Come Supergirl with Kara (as they were all new legacy characters technically), I figured I may as well put the Superboy version with Clark. At the time, Clark needed more Micros anyway but then I went overboard on adult Superman designs. Whoops.

For a late comer of a character, she had a lot of outfits.
Posted by Future on :
quote:Originally posted by Sarcasm Kid: Oh cool! You know, I don't remember Laurel appearing in that Elseworlds annual. Thank you.
She made an "unofficial" one panel cameo. On the last page of the annual, there's a tall girl colored with blond hair and a familiar orange, white, and black coloring looking displeased as a man with a mustache hits on her. It's not officially stated anywhere that it's Laurel, but given the 'star' emblem and the level of detail for someone in the background by both the penciler and colorist, I'd like to think it'd be her.
That annual is actually choc full of background people getting familiar Legionnaire coloring. Whether that's intentional or not, I don't know, but for fun I try to recreate them anyway when I come to those characters.

Otherwise, I'd have to spend weeks if not months on each Legionnaire just going through the past 40-50 years looking for variations. For minor or recent/retcon Legionnaires like XS or Laurel Gand there's less for me to have to mine through and it's easier for me to do more complete sets - and even then I always underestimate the number of outfits they've worn.
I intend to be thorough with all Legionnaires eventually, but it'll be when I'm all done with every major character and will have the chance to go through year by year of the Legion's vast publication history.

Also wondering if you'll be including a batball coach version of him - or does the 5YL version cover that?
But good nitpicks! I had completely forgotten Thom had the full starfield before the V-neck. It's also an easy micro to make so I'll probably shoe-horn that one in shortly.
The coach version and others mentioned, like the slight modifications to postboot Thom's uniform after Legion Lost, I'll definitely get to one day! You got it, it'll just be when I lap back - or maybe a better term would be a Phase 2 for everyone.

Where is Ultra Boy's 5yl costume. The one that showed his Ultra tattoo and pony tail?
Posted by Future on :
They're in the middle of the first row, BouncingBear. He has his jacket on for the costume that would have actually shown his tattoo and his other 5YL outfit by Immonen had a short sleeve that covered it.

That's a sweet collection of outfits overall! I don't remember the second Legion Animated outfit at all, but it's pretty groovy!

Awesome. Amazing. Bravo! Some of those Gates looks made me laugh out loud.
Posted by Future on :
The fact Gates has existed 15 years without his own mini-series is a crime. He's a visual/comedic gold mine (props to Giffen or Levitz tossing him into Dirk's VR war game in the recent annual to prove my point).
Edited the first post of this thread to be a pseudo table of contents, linking to the various submissions so you don't have to hunt through the thread for a specific character. May start modifying the thread title as well for when there's updates.
Posted by Candlelight on :
Wow, these are so amazing! First, SB is timely since I'm just starting Sarcasm Kid's sumo Sun Boy design and you have saved me an enormous amount of work using Jo's images - I use your micros to start with since I don't actually know how to make micros from scratch. Thank-you! sigh
Second, except for the first 3, where the 'outside underpants' actually LOOK like underpants, opening and all, Dirk's outfits have been so dynamic and beautiful!
Third, GATES! He's way out of sequence and I LOVE that you did him/that since he's going to be in the new Legion Lost series in September!!!
And since Shady took a nose dive in Threeboot and the Retroboot, Gates has moved up from my second favorite Legionnaire of all time to my favorite Legionnaire of all time. What a darling and you started him from an egg!
This feels like my birthday and I got 2 great presents!

I excluded Violet's purple outfit she wore when Giffen took over pencils, seeing as how it was actually only ever worn by Yera. That costume and other Vi designs during that time period will show up when I get Chameleon Girl all done.

These are so beautiful. How do you do so many with so much detail?!
It takes me forever to make a sumo Legionnaire and trying to get the detail needed.
And I have YOUR work to start with! You're amazing.
Posted by Mystery Lad on :
Gates in his shell... hee-hee!
You left out SW6 Dirk in his flame-motif swimsuit from the Legionnaires-in-Atlantis (or was it Poseidonis?) issue... I know, it was a one-off...
I love Sun Boy #3-- underwear-on-the-outside and all. I don't think those lines represent a fly, though I guess they might. I think they're just lines.
Posted by Mystery Lad on :
Y'know, I kind of wish Vi would wear that outfit- if only to freak Yera out (though I guess *that's* moot for awhile). Maybe she'd be 'reclaiming' it? Who knows, maybe she had it hanging in her closet at HQ waiting for the right moment to first wear it when Yera usurped her big 'debut'.
Posted by superboymddjr on :
no bionic blue leg for violet? well it d be a fun ....
Posted by Candlelight on :
Ummm, Yera is wearing lavendar/purple on the cover of Legion Lost, isn't she?
And, yes, ML, I suspect that Dirk's outside underwear isn't really functional underpants, lol, I just think that they LOOK like it.

I'll add them for the characters I haven't done yet, superboymddjr. Ones I've already done I'll add on a later date.

I like Black Lantern Jan the best, though.

Yep! He posed as Marvel Lad as a prank once he was freed from the Phantom Zone in Adventure Comics #305. He then also asked to be sent back into the Phantom Zone for ten minutes so he could gloat to the villains who were still trapped there.
Ah, the Silver Age.
Posted by Future on :

I like Black Lantern Jan the best, though.
Indeed! Which is pretty funny considering he had no speaking lines in the show (though he did have an issue in the comic adaption). They were his first costume which appeared in the flashback episode, his season 1 outfit, his season 2 outfit, and then his season 2 outfit was colored white for his comic book appearances. Technically there should be a fifth look. Jan didn't sport the goatee in season 2 until halfway through the season.

Boy that's uh, that's screwy.

Two characters with facial hair on that show. Must've been getting popular.

Yay, a Future blitz! Great work, as always, though you did miss the strangest Jan costume of all:
Thanks, Ex! I did think of making that Jan costume despite the fact it was a one off (I think it was George Perez who designed it?). After I stared at it for a few seconds though, I decided to take the lazy way out and skipped it for the time being.
Posted by superboymddjr on :
oh please do include Element Lad s Kirbyesque (by the way, not George Perez designed it....I think it was Mike Grell or Joseph Rubenstein or James Sherman in TDT Legion book) soon...if you can do others, then you can do it.
By the way, where's Ayla with blonde hair? Ayla with baseball hat (I admit, when I saw her with baseball cap and overall, I absolutely LOVED her in that one!!!! ) Kinetix in her Science Police uniform?
Posted by Future on :
I'm just covering their main costumes right now. As previously stated, I want to go back and do one-off outfits and casual clothes at a later time. With the amount of time it takes to make each of these, it'd be months between a single update if I tried to be thorough on Legionnaires with 50 years of history and I'd probably still miss some designs.
Posted by superboymddjr on :
alright, then here's hoping to see Mon-El in both puff sleeve costume and Bobb Kohan civilian suit.
by the way I am surprised that i did not noticed the color scheme change on Mystery Lad's and Element Lad's leggings!
I like the Emerald E-Lad best....BL E-Lad comes close 2nd.

These are so amazing. People who haven't done one of these have no idea how much effort it is to do them, and you do so many! And so incredibly well! sigh
Posted by Mystery Lad on :
Wow- how much do I love page 11?
Is Emerald Legion Jan the Legionnaire with the least green in his outfit? I kind of thought he had some facial hair going on- did I combine that with Jan Prime in my mind? I find myself really drawn to the fin-head 40's look- and then to the pink and white, surprisingly.
I still like the fan-designed Air Legion stewardess look for Ayla. And classic Mon- though it'd be fun if he adopted the Marvel Lad persona for some reason or other again. If only for a story or storyline.
For Dreamy, it's all about the hair. I don't have any strong preference for or against any of her uniforms (except possibly slightly disliking Nura for the Defense from Superman/Batman), but her hairstyle and color makes all the difference! I kind of miss the flowy skirt from pre-membership postboot.

And the CAPE!! I like seeing her wearing the cape, a few times in Adventure Comics and at least twice or three times during DnA era. it made her beautiful, alluring and regal at the same time.

Page 11 is a pretty great collection of Legionnaires. They're all ones I want to expand on too, so they'll get some love in the future again.

Very close! Looking at his Emerald outfit, Jan really didn't have a lot of green. His was just a subtle hue where the white normally was. I think only Emerald Lyle has him beat for being devoid of green. I don't believe I spotted a goatee on Emerald Jan. Ultra Boy did gain one though while Lyle got a soul patch.
Chalk me up as well as a fan of Nura having flowing clothing, be it a cape or a skirt. While I may not have done a lot of micros for those styles yet, I did like how the skirts on Nura looked in TMK and the postboot.

Most glow-in-the-dark toys at the time glowed green, so I guess it was a sensible choice to get "ghostly" across to kids.

Posted by Lard Lad on :
Thanks for adding the Mordruverse version of Mr. Nolan, Future! I think it's obvious that version has a very dear place in our (5YL fans) hearts. I think that may be because it was probably the best look we ever got at the pre-boot Andy, albeit an altered version of him.
Posted by Candlelight on :
I wish we could see all of the Mordruverse characters. There were only a few of them, but they were really memorable. Besides Mordru, there was Glorith, Mysa, Rond and Andrew, that I remember off hand. Were there others? Anyway, theey would make a great group shot.
Did Val get to have more outfits in his mini series and then, in Action+ years later, with Una and company? I agree that I thought he should have had more.

Posted by Candlelight on :
Yes, his series. It didn't last more than a year or so, did it? I need to go to the story archives, etc., and find out, if I ever get the time.
Posted by superboymddjr on :
the countdown where KK was starring was HORRIBLE!!! bad artwork....it hurt your eyes...bad bad bad.
however the KK 15 issues - he was ALWAYS in the costume...never in civilian costume. imagine that! 24/7 costume! It lasted more than a year...15 issues then Kamandi #59 just on time during the DC Implosion.
Posted by Future on :
Outside of a Rotting Corpse with a Sheet Over It, I don't think Val had any other looks in Countdown - BUT I could be remembering wrong because I read that book once and that was it.
One look I DID skip was the Karate Kid fellow in LSH v6 #6 - mostly because we never got exact clarification that WAS Val.

You got it, the first of the Giffen designs is the one she wore at the end of the GDS. Granted, it's not the best angle - it's hard to see the crest hip-skirt she wore and I probably didn't do the best job in making the orange look as shiny as it was.

Missing a few Inferno micros, but I don't have her mini series on me to do the one or two outfits she had in a flashback. I also chose not to include Beauty Blaze or threeboot Inferno with her, as while the characters all have similarities they've never been directly linked (and have enough differences to me anyway).
I don't know why, but once I started making Monstress micros I just couldn't stop. I think I was having fun getting to work with and tweak a new template. It's never something I thought I'd say 12-some years ago, but I really miss the character. It's been fun re-reading her in all her ridiculousness.
It's kind of surreal when I update the main post of this thread and realize how many Legionnaires I've done already. Still a lot to go, and even more outfits to go back and do for already published characters! Let's not get started on the villains and supporting cast...
Shadow Lass and Kid Quantum II are up next.

Here's a few more Postboot Legionnaires: Jazmin and Gear. Kid Quantum II is one of my favorite Legionnaires, waned only by her overexposure near the end of DnA's run. Gear was a great concept that never got time to shine. I loved him in Giffen's fill-in issue of The Legion.

loved and still love Chemical King...I think his costume is one of the best Legion ever...green and black - so simple. I remember seeing him wearing a "C" on his belt before...but I cannot recall which issue of SLSH he did have a C belt. so you did a awesome job on Condo! I sure miss him! I was hoping that there is a way that he could be brought back alive...but nah..because we have Chemical Kid now in Legion! *grumble*
Posted by Future on :
As near as I could tell, the 'C' belt was only from the cover of his death issue in S&LSH. That didn't surprise me too much. Going through Condo's appearances, I realized his costume changed literally every artist - sometimes mid-issue. The basics were always the same, but the boot shape, cuffs, belt, and collar would always mutate and the color scheme occasionally shifted.
Instead of doing all the little variations, I just did the most common variation I saw - him going between brown V boots and black standard boots. Of course, the color scheme flipped a lot on both, but it gets the point across I hope.
With that in mind, his Postboot appearances are very amusing. He only made a few small cameos and visits, but when he did he was always wearing the same outfit - just colored differently. His skin color would darken a little as well, usually from page to page. I thought it was just color goofs, which surprised me from McCraw, until I realized they may be paying homage to Condo's constantly shifting uniform. His first postboot micro, a formal look, changed colors (as did Condo himself!) every scene jump we did.
Posted by Mystery Lad on :
Maybe he was using his power on the pigmentation process of dyes in his clothing and in his skin?
It would be kind of a neat addition to him that he was *always* using his powers-- that he had to really concentrate to turn them completely off.
I'm glad you didn't do a zombiefied version from the 5YL book.
I always wished Grell had given him one of his skimpy costumes- at least for an issue or two. It would completely have made sense for him to go back to his fully-covered uniform, due to his personality. But if Imra would wear what she wore, I think *any* Legionnaire would show some skin.

Maybe Condo could have saved the skimpy costume for "sessions" with Lyle Lyle was still alive during the beginning of the Grell era, right?

Yeah, it was just a civilian outfit from when she accidentally got transported to her home time. One a young girl would wear in the 85th century, I suppose. Loincloths are the new skirts if Andromeda taught us anything.

Gotta love updating this thread when I have no micros to post. I'm sure it tricks half the viewers who are hanging out on the main LegionWorld hub into thinking I'm making a legitimate update.
First, Wildfire is about 60% done now. He may still make 2011 yet. He'll add about 20 new micros to the arsenal.
Second, my goal as of right now is to continue making official costumes for Legionnaires until I get to my very last one - be that Dragonwing, Bloodclaw, Sizzle, whoever. After that, it's a toss up. I'll either do my first ever "lap back" and start adding some missing outfits and fun looks for already posted Legionnaires ... OR I may start going through the Legion's history and creating micros for the villains and supporting cast members. I haven't decided yet. Either way it'll be an undertaking, but opinions of what you the viewer would like to see first is appreciated.
Third, it's nearly the one year anniversary of Future's Legion Micros on Legion World. It's about a month and five days away so it may seem premature to celebrate. However, I was making these little guys months before I decided to post them on the board so I'm more having a belated and public congratulations to myself for actually keeping with an art project for longer than a day.
In that regard, I went back and counted the number of Micro Heroes I've made for the Legion. 742! That's not bad, especially considering there's about 100+ more from this past year that are Marvel and other properties that I don't post here.
Lastly, I made my first ever teaser of what's to come as a thank you for all of you who have viewed or commented in the past year. Hopefully this will motivate me to continue as I was starting to lose some steam the last few months.
Here's to many more! Thanks again, Legion World.

The Subs will be coming. I consider them Legionnaires both for their 'off panel' time during the Five Year Gap as well as their lengthy tenure assisting the Legion. When I close out the Baxter Legion with Polar Boy, I'll probably then run through Night Girl, Fire Lad, etc.

These Wildfires are awesome, too. I especially love the postboot and Cinar designs, possibly because they're similar in colors. I'm not a fan of the underpant look, either.
Thank-you for so much incredible work, for not pooping out and for lots of inspiration to budding micro makers!

Hi Future. Anything new coming soon?
Posted by Future on :
I'm slowing down a little bit in my production, but work is still being made on occasion. The next micro is coming ... now!
Posted by Future on :
As much as I hated Cinar(?)'s red costume for Tyroc, I don't mind the way his latest Lost one incorporates elements of it, while still paying primary homage to his orginal 70s one.
And I like that nearly all of the costumes have stuck with those silver ball things on his chest. Hopefully they'll become an instantly identifiable motif/logo/maybe even monitor board symbol for him too.
Posted by razsolo on :
I never realised Wildfire had so much variation in his containment suits before! I guess if he's gonna go get 'em blown up every other week, why not change it up a bit..?
I hated the Cinar Tyroc costume, but it looks decent here....the final animated Legion one is pretty cool too, I wouldn't mind seeing him in something like that!

Submission 45: SHIKARI LONESTAR / Shikari
Top Row: Kwai Society (x4) / U.P. Jacket / The Legion #3 Cover (Unused Costume) Bottom Row: Legionnaire (x4) / Psi-Block Collar
Posted by Candlelight on :
I was hoping you'd do Shikari soon after Dawnstarm, for comparison.
I loved Shikari's first looks, especially. So simple and dramatic.
Posted by Future on :
Yeah, there's something about Shikari's armor on the first look that looks great - especially with the shade of red she was often paired with.
I think her official Legion costume could have benefited from some exposed limbs. When she's armored up, it loses a lot of intimidation and impact in a full body suit. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the original intent with the gray of the Legion look (that it was flesh and not just her costume). I also wouldn't be surprised why they shied away from it. That's a lot of exposure.
I had fun making Shikari more than I had a few recent Legionnaires. Partly it was because I had never paid her as much mind so it was fun to finally learn all her little armor patterns and palettes. Another reason was because I did work on about 6 micros but got 11 out of it.
Posted by Candlelight on :
I was thinking, and I wish that Coipel had shown the more ridged outline of the armor under her costume when she switched to that mode. It would have been worth it visually, if he'd gone a little simpler on the armor itself and corseted the dress.
imo
I might try that sometime. Maybe. Should be easy using your base, as always.

Submission 46: BLOK
Row One: Preboot / Perez Design / Giffen Design (x2) / Lightle Design / Magic Wars Row Two: Retroboot / Five Year Gap / TMK / Postboot (JSA #51) Row Three: Legends of Dead Earth / JLU Toon / Legion Toon / Superboy's Legion
Posted by Future on :
Blok is missing his 'Black Witch'/DCNu redesign. Otherwise, most of his official looks are represented.
Posted by Candlelight on :
Love these, especially the TMK version. I was wondering though, why does he wear clothes at all? Is it to define his gender or give him a place to put a belt?
Are you going to create the NCNu version? That one will certainly be different.
Posted by Viridis Lament on :
Great work Future on the last pages!
Blok is always near the top of my list of favorite LSHers but he has never had a "good" costume.
Posted by Blacula on :
^ I disagree. I LOVE his Lightle classic. I even quite like the Retroboot hot-pants version of it.
The costume that stands out the most on that list, though, is the gladiator-esque second one. I wonder what his 'look' would have ended up being if Lightle had continued down that road, rather than the traditional super-hero one.
Posted by Future on :
I too love his Lightle costume and can easily understand why it's been the partial basis for all of his other costume adaptations since the end of the Preboot.
I also wish that Perez's gladitorial costume had actually made a presence in the books - it'd be interesting to see if Blok's character had gotten different play or motifs if that look had stuck. After all, Lightle's design is pretty much taking Blok's first and Giffen looks together and adding a few accessories. Without that costume in history, what would Blok look like now?
I'll be doing the DCNu version eventually. I'm not sure why I didn't make it, I just felt like publishing these yesterday. It'll give me something to actually micro of Blok when I lap back. Up next (someday) is Invisible Kid II.
Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :
The about the Perez costume is that it seems to change his whole personality. Definitely gives him a kind of slave-warrior vibe. Interesting.
Posted by Candlelight on :
Maybe a 'John Carter'(of Mars) look.
Which issue did the Perez look come from? To make that look fly for long in the Legion, I think that the other costumes would have had to have changed as well. It would have been the Legion of Swashbuckling Heroes!
PS - Looking at Shikari, I'm thinking that she and Blok would have made a striking couple, especially the versions with Blok's shoulder fissure thingys!
Posted by Future on :
Candle, Blok's gladiator look was from one of George Perez's portraits of the Legionnaires he did roughly around the Great Darkness Saga. I can't quite recall if it made an official appearance in the book, so I included it anyway just to be safe.
Posted by Future on :
I think I like the simplicity of his first and postboot uniforms and I've never understood how someone who wants to be hidden would wear yellow.
I wonder what it would look like if the black and white were reversed, though? Something a little like the TMK era's but maybe more interesting.
The Magic Wars outfit is certainly distinctive and beautiful.
Posted by Future on :
With Jacques, I was surprised just how many variations he had. For example, I didn't realize how many differences between his Retroboot and DCNu outfit there were. I think that makes him one of the most tweaked Legion designs randomly aside from Mon, Jo, and the new kids. Likewise, I didn't realize how many different color and hair looks he had until his first mission (Great Darkness Saga) wrapped.
I really wish his official Legion animated model had a bigger screenshot somewhere. It looks like such an interesting design but something is lost in the small size and thus in my translation.
Posted by Candlelight on :
I DID do the reverse I suggested. It's on my micro thread if you're interested.
You make my life so much simpler!
Posted by Shining Son on :
quote:Originally posted by Candlelight: I think I like the simplicity of his first and postboot uniforms and I've never understood how someone who wants to be hidden would wear yellow.
Maybe for the contrast? When he IS visible he wants to make sure he's noticed. (More likely the artist feels this way than Jacques.)
quote:I wonder what it would look like if the black and white were reversed, though? Something a little like the TMK era's but maybe more interesting.
Looks fine, but maybe they shied away from it because back in the day Tyroc and Jacques were blessed exceptions from the then-cliche of black heroes wearing black and having "black" in their names.
Posted by Future on :
Speaking of Tyroc, I always assumed Jacques' costume change from white/black to yellow/black was to differentiate him from Troy. Likewise with the streak in his hair.
Progress is being made on White Witch. She's about 75% done.

I'm also thinking of making a 'smaller' Quislet so that he'd fit in a bit better with the other micros. Right now he's a bit bigger than normal.

Posted by Future on :
He just always had that damn tongue hanging out!
What can I say, I am loving the chance to do abstract micros like the zombies, skeletons, and the tattered clothes on poor Burn Victim Pol.
Considering how young he was supposed to be, even if Greg and some others didn't draw him that way, it is a little scary how much skin Pol was always showing.
Posted by Candlelight on :
hmmmm The Vi/Pol comment is probably spot on, given what we learned later.
I like his Magic Wars costume, but I tend to like most of that era's looks.
My favorite for him though, is his first Magnoball uniform, the red and black. Any team would love something like that, I think. Do you remember who designed that one?
Posted by Future on :
The Magnoball uniforms from the Postboot are all Jeff Moy. The black and red one is actually a color gaffe - it only appeared on the cover of Legionnaires #70. The issue within had the colors of the next two micros.

Posted by Future on :
Thanks, team! It's a great feeling to have Tellus done. He's probably one of the most detailed templates I've made from scratch. Like most artists I tend to nitpick, but with him I'm fairly proud of the end result.
I opted to use the 'Lightle' Tellus body, seeing as how he created the guy. I'm not a fan of Tellus standing on his hind legs with claw fingers anyway.
Posted by Candlelight on :
I especially love the emotional color displays.
I just wish that we knew what the different colors meant. It seems like I remember reading something that Lightle wrote about them once.
Posted by Future on :
some neat ideas there! My only quibble os that the emotion colors codes generally match our own culture's associations with color; these are cultural constructs that really are not universal (even between Earth's human populations). That aside, given that they are writing for us as an audience, they make sense.
Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :
Both Quislet and Tellus always seem so much cooler in Lightle's descriptions than they ever actually seem in the books.
Good job as always, Future!
Posted by Future on :
Agreed. The potential for Tellus and Quislet was great. It's sad that a lot of the ideas got nixed right out of the gate (the color nodules, Quis having a physical body, etc).

It's getting easier to churn out micros now because each posted character is some type of goal / accomplishment. With Tellus, I was excited to finish the most difficult template yet. With Polar Boy, there were a lot of milestones that would be reached.
First, Polar Boy marks the last of the Pre-Crisis full-time Legionnaires to do. That's a lot of Legion! He also marks the beginning of the Substitute Legion / Five Year Gap, which is a nice change in focus / color palettes for me. Lastly, he brings my total of Legion micros to over 900! Once the Subs are complete we should have over 1,000, as I (for whatever reason) have decided to be horribly thorough with all the looks for the Subs.
Next up is Night Girl! After her, it'll be the Subs followed by the rest of the Retroboot/DCNu members. The DCNu kids, being Academy grads mostly, will of course then lead into the rest of the Academy students and Five Year Gap members.

Posted by Future on :
I would be interested to learn more about Lydda's heritage or pre-Legion lifestyle. For a girl that begged her father for powers and then initially used them to try and get a specific hero as a boyfriend, it's funny how she doesn't really get a "princess" or "stalker" label. It'd be amusing to me if there was a catty Legion lass who still teased Lydda about being a stalker fangirl despite her tenure now as a heroine.
Posted by razsolo on :
Yay, Lydda!
I like most of her costumes...with the owl, even her bikinis look more like superhero costumes than those things usually do.
I still find her current costume more offensive than any of the string bikinis she's worn before...I think having a full bodysuit with a cleavage cut-out where it's SO IMPORTANT we see some boob that it even has to break up her emblem is more tasteless than trying to incorporate sexiness organically into the overall look if that makes sense...
Posted by Shining Son on :
Lydda didn't get pegged as a princess or stalker because that was a common female behavior in comics at that time.
Remember, for all her talent and independence, Lois Lane still wanted Superman to marry her more than anything else in the 60s.
Posted by Future on :
One thing I find interesting about Lydda's 60s-esque origin is that, unlike Lois Lane, it seems to withstand the test of time/reboots. I actually like having a heroine with that set-up, though I'd love to see more reactions to the development. What did/does her father think of all this? Did any of the other Subs have secret Legion crushes they'd confide to her about, etc?
Her look that had the most variations was definitely the 80s one designed by, I believe, Steve Lightle. It went through a number of accessory, color, and sleeve changes over the decade. I actually could have made more micro variations of the look, but decided that may be excessive.

Okay, I think that was about my biggest update in one sitting. 165 micros later...
Anyway, some notes and updates: - FIRE LAD has been updated with an additional five micros.
- The Subs have been completed. CHLOROPHYLL KID, STONE BOY, COLOR KID, PORCUPINE PETE, INFECTIOUS LASS, URK, ANTENNAE LAD, DOUBLE HEADER, RAINBOW GIRL, KARATE KID II, COMET QUEEN, RON KARR, and SADE have been added.
- I did not include characters like Grinn or Universo, who may have assisted the SUBS at times Five Years Later but never technically served with them. Visi Lad is absent but will be forthcoming with the Academy students.
- I am missing some pin-up/promotional shots which may have had different looks or colorings for the SUBS.
- The total number of micros in the archives has rocketed to over 1100 now.
- The table of contents on the first post has been expanded to feature several teams which have begun to form, like the Legion Academy and LSV.

I simply LOVED THEM all!!! esp looking forward with the Legion Academy (esp. Power Boy and Gravity Kid!) and then hopefully the Uncanny Amazers...I hope so!
keep it up! Love it!

New additions are awesome as always!
Would love to see Monica Sade back with the Subs. They could use more chicks.

It almost feels redundant to keep singing the praises of these... but, man, you deserve it!
Thanks for all the hard work you keep putting into these, Future. It's really an amazing body of work you're creating.

Did I miss Kent Shakespeare? And Lana Lang? And Dynamo Boy? Nemesis Kid?
I'll go check. sigh
Found Nemesis Kid, but not the other 3. Or Kono or Celeste, at least I didn't see them in the lists. Did you say somewhere on these pages that you're going to do that era as a unit? But, wasn't Sade from that era?
I'll check again.
Did. No Pete Ross or the other Reservists, IIRC.

I think I like Comet Queen as a micro better than I do as a character! Something about the face, I think, is kinda cool.
Color Kid looks better in a skirt, as a girl, than he does normally.
"Yeah, Ulu? That time you were a chick? That was a good look for you..."

Who would have thought Stone Boy would have the most looks out of all the Subs?

Future, there was a pretty good fan site called "Zoe's Closet" that had scans of ALL of Kinetix's outfits EVER. Looks like it's down though...
But if you need help with any Postboot era costumes, give me a yell.
Posted by Sarcasm Kid on :
Thanks, as always, to the kind words and support from various posters here on this endeavor.
As has been pointed out, there's still lots of characters and looks from Legion lore, thus my absence. I'm hard at work at more! The Academy kids are still forthcoming. ALL the Academy kids, official members or not. They're about 50% done, but I decided to get Yera done because posting her AFTER the new recruits just seemed wrong. By that same token, Earth Man is coming too. Then, onward to the Glorithverse as well as some other villains and heroes.
In regards to previously posted characters and missed or minor outfits, don't expect an update with 100 new Cosmic Boys. Instead, I'll probably be reading through the Legion's vast history in chronological order and routinely update specific characters as I come across new looks.
Posted by Exnihil on :
Great work as always, Future.
So, reading between the lines, does the absence of Yera as Luornu during the Glorith-verse reunion section give a hint as to what you really think went down on Winath?
Posted by Future on :
Haha. Good call, Ex! I always felt that could go either way. We have Luornu with her "different personalities" for the first time in that era. Yera was checking out other men with Nura and Shady in the same annual, so it'd almost be fitting karma!
Regardless, I love Yera. She was always one of my favorite supporting characters for her unique history and the role she played both in and out of the Legion. I'm really glad she's risen from D-list obscurity to C-list obscurity since Johns.
Posted by Power Boy on :
Future you are really amazing ... I had no idea she wore so much purple!
Posted by Future on :
Neither did I, Peebs! I liked the colors on her on her Legion Lost outfit when I first saw it and knew she wore it before ... but wow! They were smart to use that as her color of choice for a reason.
I like that, except for the Glorithverse and later DCNu, she alternated between greens and purples much like the actual Shrinking Violet!
Posted by Future on :
To be a Double Post Damsel, I also like the implication/likelihood that purple is associated at long last with the Violet character simply due to Yera's preference for the color!
Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :
Niiiiiiiiiice! I always look forward to more updates form you, Future.

Nice work, as always. Now I want micros of all the legionnaires "in bed."
Posted by Candlelight on :
Cham's worn purple quite a bit, too. Maybe, Durlan's like creating that color with their skin cells, it might tingle deliciously or feel extra silky? Or, then again, it might be just easy to maintain!
Lovely as always, Future. I was beginning to worry a little about you, so I'm extra glad to see your wonderful posts.
I find that I've disliked Kirt so much that I had a hard time saving, or even going over, his entry. sigh But, okay, I did.

Submission 70: LAUREL KENT / Elna Kent / Manhunter
Outfits: 70s (x2) / Pajamas / 80s / Sans Cape / Injured / Larocque (x3) / Manhunter / Elna Kent
Top Row: Secret Origins / Secrets of the Legion / Super Stalag of Space / 70s / LSH Annual v2 #3 (x2) / 80s / Talokian Spy / Retroboot / LSH v3 #54 * Bottom Row: Glorithverse (x3) / Postboot (x2) / Threeboot / Legion of Oz
* LSH v3 #54 depicts an Academy student that looks much like Grev, though younger and possibly female. Whether you believe it's Grev or not, I've included a micro in both forms to satisfy everyone's canon!

Posted by Future on :
80's Laurel Kent will always be my favorite. Poncho and a pageboy. Classic.
Grev's widow's peak sure did come and go, didn't it? I associate it with him, and didn't realize that it was something added in the 80's.
Funny how the decision to change Lamprey's face back to green in the Retroboot made it look like she's walking around naked all the time. Her appearance in Adventure (drawn by Jiminez) really made it look like she was stepping out of Power Boy's shower in the nude...
Posted by Future on :
Whew! That's just the first part of the Legion Academy micros! Other miscellaneous students, as well as their associates from the Glorithverse, Postboot, and DCNu are forthcoming.
I didn't feel like holding off and posting them all at once though, because I honestly have no idea when I'll be finished!
Lots of interesting details about these students. As you can see, a lot of their looks are just coloring errors or slight changes done artist to artist over the decades. Especially Grev, with his coloring and hairstyles as Set pointed out!
Despite the fact it does make her look naked, I like the Retroboot coloring of having Lamprey all in green. It harkens back to her original skin color, plus I think it looks less jarring than Caucasian flesh does against that look. I love the almost liquid/electric look her hair has now too!
Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :
Awesome work as always!
Though... did you skip Grev's Super-Stalag outfit? I seem to recall him shirtless in that story.
Posted by Future on :
Haha. I would skip Grev's first appearance. To the Archives I go!
Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :
I'd totally forgotten a bunch of these, like Laurel's "Elna Kent, Superwoman" appearance. That was in Superman/Batman, right? What issue was that?
Posted by Future on :
Grev has gotten his Super Stalag on! And Elna Kent is from Superman/Batman #80, I believe!
Posted by Sarcasm Kid on :
Yes, she was presented as the Superwoman of the 31st Century, next to Kent Shakespeare as Superman.
Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :
And the Brane Taylor version of Batman!
Posted by Sarcasm Kid on :
And Tom Wayne as Robin, I think.
Posted by Jerry on :
Yippe for an awesome job on the academy members! That's going above and beyond the call of duty.
Posted by Candlelight on :
Imo, ALL of Future's work is above and beyond just about anything I've seen for the Legion, anywhere. He's amazing!

Comet Queen is similarly 'blessed' with her face and costume being the same color. I think it's very striking. Simplicity usually is, imo.
Cham and Yera could do something similar, and for 'real', since they ARE nude, but never have, IIRC.
Posted by razsolo on :
Lamprey, Nightwind and Crystal Kid sure have changed their looks drastically since their intro, huh? My personal canon is that changing skin/hair pigmentation in the future is the same as getting a piercing or tattoo today...

say how about doing the Science Police?

I've accepted that notion as well for my personal canon of how their skin colors could change so drastically. I like to think of Crystal Kid as changing his to impress the Legion, while Lamprey and Nightwind's may be more permanent side-effect.
Posted by Future on :
* Name never actually printed or given. This is just Eryk's speculation which I wholly condone.
Posted by Future on :
That's all I have to post this time. More Academy students are coming, but I figured I'd post these few to keep interest going as I sift through the different realities next.
Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :
Yay! I love that "D. Spengler Bonita" is catching on as a name for this character!
Posted by Candlelight on :
'Bonita' means 'pretty', right? She's certainly that. What's 'D.' stand for, or is it just the initial? My dad's name was L.D..
Lovely work, as always, Future!

Submission 80: TREBIA RIJLEIGH / Silver Sword
Outfits: Knight / Universo Project / Legion Academy *
* Though she is never named, a character who appears to have the same armor as Silver Sword is depicted as an Academy student in LSH v3 #47.
That rounds out the Preboot Legion Academy members!
Up next! Dragonwing, Gravity Kid, Chemical Kid ... that whole lot! Then, the U.P. Military Academy and the Postboot Legion Academy.
Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :
The fish-things are "Skreaks".
I love these! I never connected that one Academy student with Silver Sword, but you're right it seems to be her!
Posted by Future on :
Thanks, Eryk! I thought the "Silver Sword" design looked familiar, having re-read the Universo Project only a few days prior.
I also enjoy that, despite the fact he's never been named, there's a clear evolution for the unnamed gentleman with a beard in regard to his powerset and hair length. Could this be the rumored Wray Muntz, the unidentified mind-wipee with D. Spengler Bonita, who chooses to use his reality warping powers to augment his own mass? They're depicted as having some type of heated conversation in their first appearance, after all! Why shouldn't the fates keep them together?
I've also always wondered if the unnamed, purple brute was meant to be Power Boy. Jed was the only established Academy student missing from the LSH v3 #47 training shot I believe - the coloring was so similar it had me suspicious. The Retroboot has since established them as two separate characters.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :
Hmmm... I kind of like the idea of that character as Wray Muntz. Maybe his powers are basically that his physical appearance varies with his own self-image, or something. So, when he's really self-confident, he manifests as a He-man, but turns into a skinny wimp if his confidence is shattered?
I was also wondering if that might be Power Boy!
Posted by Future on :
I love it. It could help explain how such a potentially powerful meta could be captured by the Dominators, should he have some type of fear of them or lowered esteem due to the collapse of the Legion once he was finally prepped for graduation.
It very well could have been Jed. Larocque was fairly consistent, including a lot of the previous Academy students he had designed later on like Westerner, Mandalla, "Spengler" and "Wray." He had that one-off Laurel Kent Superman costume homage he did, so bulking Power Boy back up to a bigger frame like in his first appearance seems a likely option.
Posted by razsolo on :
I sound like a broken record but these are awesome Future! Great work including even random background students!

Very cool! I always wondered what the 'Skreaks' powers were (other than levitation).
Cosmic Teams, IIRC, refers to them as 'Flotsam & Jetsam,' but I have no idea if that's just something the site owner made up on the spot instead of calling them 'floating fish-things.'
Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :
Hmm... I wonder if we could interpret their changing colors as Tellus's "mood ring" color changes to them?
Posted by Exnihil on :
Building off EDE's comment - what about an even more way out thought:
What if the color changing bumps on Tellus' back actually are an early-development stage of Skreaks? Like some sort of symbiotic relationship where embryonic Skreaks actually gestate on the backs of mature Hykraians?

Your work is so good and people seem to appreciate this series, but I don't know if they understand that your work is much more complex than regular micros, since your templates are on an angle. The angle means that the left and right sides aren't equal, since perspective comes into play and the arms are rounded at the shoulder. The chests are also angled and defined with 'bulk'.
Regular micros don't have those roundings and angles, so they're identicle on each side as well as flat and just two dimensional.
The Byzantine style is almost impossible to do with all of their little flourishes and points, with your templates. It just takes SOOOO much longer and is much more of a trial and error, mostly error, undertaking. It's very frustrating.
But the attempt has made me even more appreciative of you gorgeous work.
