Nice... bust... Posted by Yellow Kid on :
Classic Shady! I like that much better than that one-piece-thong thing DnA had her in.
She looks fantastic.
Posted by Jesse321 on :
Am I posting this in the right section?
Posted by MLLASH on :
I would think so. And THAT is possibly one of the most amazing things I have ever seen....
Posted by Sketch Lad on :
Hi Jesse, you already had a thread for this here at the Bits section. In fact, I recommend that you use one thread for posting all of your creations.
About them.... they are uncannily excellent!
Posted by Jesse321 on :
Is there way to rename this thread? That way I can just keep adding the pieces on this one.
Remember I'm new here.
Posted by Candle on :
Are you making them or is someone making them for you? Who?
It's lovely. That's one of my least favorite outfits on her, though. Too T&A.
But I'm a grandma so . . .
Posted by Sketch Lad on :
Hey Jesse321, Yes when you're logged on, come to this thread and click the "edit" icon in the first post. This will allow you to edit the thread's title.
Can't wait to see LOTS of updates!
Posted by Triplicate Kid on :
I don't think that's a "mini" bust.
(sorry - just had to say it)
Seriously, she turned out really well, and more attractive than I usually regard her as.
Posted by Candle on :
I just saw the Ferro thread, Jesse. YOU make them!
Fantastic! Here I was thinking Tas was professionally done!
Posted by Jesse321 on :
Candle, actually it's a little bit of both ... I have some sculpting skill, but I have a friend that's a professional sculptor that helps me with things that I haven't learned how to do yet, like hair.
If you notice on Shady, the material of the hair changes midway down the sculpt.
The reason I picked this outfit is because these pieces are supposed to represent the Cockrum/Grell era of the Legion (which was my favorite)

Posted by Jesse321 on :
There, I edited the title and added all the pictures here as well.
The next ones to be done will be Karate Kid and Princess Projectra, then I'm going to do the founders.
Posted by Sketch Lad on :
I'll look forward to a thread with TONS of pictures and a LONG life!! I love Shady's Grell-kini!
Thanks, Jesse321!
Posted by Jesse321 on :
Shadow Lass painted ....
Posted by Jesse321 on :
Posted by Pov on :
WOW.
Just... wow. Awesome, Jesse!
Posted by Sketch Lad on :
Really, really good! Thanks for sharing!
Posted by Candle on :
Shady's outfit really looks like leather, nice!
So, you've done 2 couples and Ferro. Who's next?
I like that you didn't start with the 'founders'.
Posted by Acid Digestion Lad on :
Dude these freakin rock. But I gotta ask, why are the button/dot things on Ferro's uniform colored with different colors?
Posted by Arachne on :
Wow! These are really amazing.
Posted by Jesse321 on :
Ultra Boy work in progress
Posted by Dev - Em on :
Grell Sideburns!!!
Posted by Jesse321 on :
Haven't you noticed that all the pieces I'm doing are in the Grell/Cockrum era costumes?
Posted by Dev - Em on :
Actually yeah, but Jo's sideburns are epic!
Posted by Healex on :
I hope when you finish Jo, you do Tinya as well.
Posted by Exnihil on :
I'm a huge fan of your pieces, Jesse. I'm so excited to see one of my favorites on deck; can't wait to see Jo fully painted.
Posted by Jesse321 on :
Healex ... look at the pattern ... I'm doing them in couples, so guess who's next? After that I'm doing Jeckie and Karate Kid.
Exnihil ... Thank you so much.
Posted by Healex on :
Jesse I never noticed a pattern....go figure. But can't wait to see the pigtails!
Posted by Pov on :
I sound like a broken record, but fabulous work as USUAL!! Jo's headsculpt is spot-on, and I can'twait to see the finished piece.
P.S. -- somebody who's FB friends with Paul Levitz needs to share this thread with him!
Posted by Jesse321 on :
Here he is finished.
Posted by Jesse321 on :
LOL .. I'M friends with Paul Levitz and I'm actually meeting him at Tate's Comics next month.
Posted by Healex on :
Shades of Superboy #205.... This takes me back. Jesse, you have a great talent dude. You should be a professional.
Posted by Jesse321 on :
Here's and early work in progress pic of Karate Kid
Posted by Pov on :
AWESOME.
Posted by Jesse321 on :
Phantom Girl, still a work in progress ... but you get the idea.
Posted by Exnihil on :
Man, your work is just so amazing. I am always so astounded by how perfect the anatomy is on these. Is this something that you went to school for, or did you just "learn by doing"?
Posted by Jesse321 on :
Every sculptor I know that's worth his salt has been self taught.
Posted by Jesse321 on :
Karate Kid ... almost finished, in viewing the pictures, I just noticed something about his collar that was off that I have to fix.
Posted by Jesse321 on :
Phantom Girl and Karate Kid are finished, will post pictures of them later tonight.
Posted by MLLASH classic on :
STUNNING... MESMERIZING... your collection is absolutely priceless!!
Posted by Jesse321 on :
Here's Phantom Girl all finished
Posted by Jesse321 on :
And here's Val
Posted by Jesse321 on :
Next up ... Jeckie.
Posted by MLLASH classic on :
What about the colors... are you no longer doing that?
Posted by Jesse321 on :
They have to be molded and cast before they're painted ... the materials used to sculpt them will deteriorate over time, so they have to be transferred to resin first.
Posted by Jesse321 on :
White Witch
Posted by Candlelight on :
Lovely! Looks like we're going to see Blok soon, too. And Jeckie, of course.
Posted by Exnihil on :
So cool to see your work area.
I've got about a million and one questions about your process. But, to begin with... you mentioned above that final pieces are cast in resin... but what do you use for the initial sculpt?
For some reason, I always thought you were literally carving these busts out of a block of clay, but in the above pics it looks like you have some sort of plastic anatomical base. Do you use those for like the general shape then sculpt over that? If so, once you make the mold, do you dis-assemble the original for reuse?
This is just fascinating to me.
Posted by Jesse321 on :
Here's what my new workshop looks like, I'm still in the process of setting everything up, since I just converted my garage, so I would have more room to work.

I use everything from Super Sculpty (clay)
to 2 part Aves Apoxie Sculpt
to sculpting wax.
The base of the White Witch figure was originally sculpted in wax, and then cast in resin.
I use these as blanks as they speed up the process and I don't have to sculpt the figures each time ... it's easier to change faces and poses than to sculpt everything from scratch, plus it helps keep all the pieces in scale with one another.

Princess Projectra WIP pics
Posted by MLLASH classic on :
*in awe*
Can we expect to see some pics of all your finished statues soon? I don't remember seeing some of them after they were colored/painted/whatever.
ALL of them are 110% uh-MAZE-ing!
Posted by Jesse321 on :
I'm going to be painting in my workshop all weekend now that the AC has been installed and is working.
Posted by superboymddjr on :
yeah cant wait to see the final work. :-)
Posted by Jesse321 on :
Jeckie finished.
Posted by superboymddjr on :
awesome! so soon you gonna paint them in color?
Posted by Jesse321 on :
These still have to be converted to resin before they can be painted.
Right now I have a Cham all prepped and ready for paint.
Posted by Set on :
Projectra already looks awesome! With the reds and yellows of that classic costume, she should be vibrant.
Posted by Jesse321 on :
I should have finished pictures of the White Witch this weekend.
Posted by Jesse321 on :
Well not quite finished, but closer.
Posted by Candlelight on :
It's so wonderful to see the Legion gals as part of the collection! I'm so tired of just getting Imra as a token female.
Posted by Jesse321 on :
All done ... ready for molding and casting.
Posted by Anita Cocktail on :
Simply magical!
Posted by Candlelight on :
Love the added detail on her hair and sleeves.
Posted by Jesse321 on :
The Legion so far.
Posted by Healex on :
OH MY GOD! I can't wait to see these painted.
Posted by Jesse321 on :
They have to be molded and cast first.
Posted by Jesse321 on :
I also completely forgot that Cos and Brainy aren't in the picture.
Posted by Anita Cocktail on :
*speechless*

Inspired by George Perez, another Legionnaire joins the ranks on my shelf.
Posted by Exnihil on :
Jesse, your latest pieces are just astounding... as always!
If possible, when you get a chance, could I request an updated group shot? I'd really love to see all the finished ones you've got together.
Posted by Jesse321 on :
These aren't mine (between my paint line, being a dealer for 2 airbrush companies producing these models and working a full time job, I have no time to paint), and this isn't all of them, but here are someone elses pictures of the collection that's closest to being completed.
Timberwolf, Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad are next.
Posted by Future on :
Fantastic! The team is really coming together nicely!
Posted by Lone Wolf Legionnaire on :
Beautifully crafted, question are you going Cockrum or Grell on the Timber Wolf bust?
Posted by Jesse321 on :
I'm taking a little bit of artistic license and going with the Lee version of the Grell suit.
Posted by superboymddjr on :
LOVE LOVE LOVE that Chameleon Boy!!!!!!!!!! whoa! love Princess and Karate Kid....so hurry up on White Witch, Ultra Boy and Phantom Girl!
where's Ferro Lad?
and can't wait how you do on Timber Wolf, Saturn Girl, and LL!
and hopefully next will be Shrinking Violet and Colossal Boy?
Posted by Jesse321 on :
I said this isn't my set,I don't even have a painted Jeckie, KK, Cos, Cham or Brainy yet.
I have a cool idea to combine Colosal Boy and Violet.
Posted by Candlelight on :
Shady is missing, too. I'm hoping to get more of these in 2013!
