Inspired by a love for the Legion, Magic the Gathering, and The Marvel Magic project, I started working on a Legion set last year. After making one card, life intruded and I stopped.I just started back up a couple of weeks ago. I'll post a couple at a time. Please let me know what you think.
Apokolips
Bgztl
I'm also showing these at a Magic site for rules/wording critiques, so hopefully they will be playable.

Oh awesome! Any character ones down the pipeline? I haven't played Magic since like 1995! I think I still have my cards somewhere...
Opps I meant to say I haven't played since '95...I think I got my drivers license so that kinda got in the way

I used to be a fiend for Magic. I mean fiend. Went to all tournaments in SLC, played at work, and no just on break. A teammate and I would play while working, almost non-stop. Then we'd get a game together at lunch time with two other friends who played. I spent literally thousands of dollars on cards and have a storage shed full of them.
I've really missed play, got away when they started messing with the rules. The same exact reason I stopped playing HeroClix and recently gave up on City of Heroes.
All that being said, Ken, if you came up with a set of Legion cards I'd jump right back in in a heartbeat. And if you made Winath one of the land cards I'd be indebted to you forever!

In fact we've discussed before coming up with a Legion CCG game. Kid Prime had some really good ideas before real life let it fall by the wayside. Maybe we could bring this project back.

M.E.Lad, yeah, I plan on doing the characters also. I have a total of 13 cards done right now, 15 if you count the two I ended up making into a flip card. 8 lands, 2 artifacts, 1 sorcery, and 2 enchantments. I've decided to try and concentrate on the lands and get them done.

Winath will be one of the lands. And if you still fiend for Magic, check out Magic Workstation. That, a scanner, and Photoshop are what I'm using to make the cards.

Great additions Ken. And I love the way the artwork meshes with the card design, like it was originally drawn for the cards. Excellent work.
If you need any Legion images all you have to do is ask. I already have almost every Legion appearance ever scanned and stored on an external hard drive. It would only take me a few minutes to upload something for you if you had the reference.

Thanks Lightning Lad. Jealous does not convey the feeling...envy maybe. That must have been a real labor of love getting all of those scanned in.

Wish I could take credit for all of them but some of them have come from 'sharing' scans with other collectors.
And I love the use of the orbital tower for Legion Worlds #2 for Winath.

Awesome! I too was a M:TG fan, and one of my cloests friends still goes to tournaments, and I think is one of the Top 20 players in Australia. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) I too lost interest with Magic with their fourth or fifth expansion, and their subsequent massive changes to rules that saw all my cards out of date and 'not tournament legal' or some nonsense... Plus then I think I had my most valuable ones wrapped up in a silk cloth that fell into my washing one day, and suddenly hundreds of dollars of valuable Psionic Blasts, Dopplegangers and Clones (I was a Blue player through and through) were rendered into a pulpy mass. And maybe that was for the best. The cards are awesome, Ken! Have you worked out the 'stats' for a full set yet, or are you just making them up as you go? My requests are a Star Boy card (with powers something like 'tap Star Boy and X land - not sure what type of land - to tap X other cards' maybe) and an Xs card... Dream Girl (tap Dream Girl to force opponent to show their hand, or maybe add an X land factor for the number of cards to see?) might be fun too...

That was the first book I looked for a Winath picture, and I really liked it for the card, plus it wasn't hard to clean up. If you can think of another picture (thats not too hard to clean ) please let me know.

Ouch! I lost a Vesuvan almost the same way! I have 20 lands I want to make, and approx. 50 other cards, not including legionnaires, written down. I had thought of a similar idea for Dream Girl and also Naltor, but with looking at the top X cards in an opponents library. I like your Starboy idea.

I actually have that for Matter-Eater Lad. "2,T: Destroy target artifact."

Sorry MELad. I haven't been here in, whoa...2 weeks!
Flip cards are a mechanic that was introduced in the current block of Magic, the Kamigawa block. Although there are only "Creature to Legendary Creature", and "Legendary Creature to Legendary Enchantment" flip cards, I felt it was the best way to represent Zerox.

Two new lands.
Medicus One and Orando
I'm waiting on the balance/wording verdict for Orando, so it might change a little.
Here are a few Artifacts I've been working on.
Anywhere Machine and Flight Ring
Miracle Machine and Nightrobe and Visor
If anyone has a better picture of the Miracle Machine than my doctored up version, I'd be VERYwilling to change it.
Gotta catch up on two weeks worth of reading posts starting tomorrow...just in time for issue #10.
edit - I put the wrong land up. edit2 - New Miracle Machine pic thanks to Final Crisis 6.

A week or so after the last post my PC failed. HD, MB, Processor, power supply, and RAM...all gone. I'm guessing electrical surge. Luckily I had a backup HD not attached at the time, but I hadn't backed up in at least a month...yeah, I know, I back up every time I do something new now. I have been using the wife and kids PC just to post, but I promised I wouldn't use it for my stuff. Anyway, I finally got my PC up and running last month, all the lost info back and will be posting new cards later today.

I just noticed, how come the characters have such low points (1/1)? Won't a lot of them die easily? I haven't played Magic in years but I thought lots of characters would closer to the 3/4 range?

quote:Originally posted by Monkey Eater Lad: I just noticed, how come the characters have such low points (1/1)? Won't a lot of them die easily? I haven't played Magic in years but I thought lots of characters would closer to the 3/4 range?
In the beginning I wanted to do just that, but...
Anybody reading this, if you a)know nothing about Magic, b)don't remember much about Magic, and/or c)don't really care about Magic, then read this...
The short answer It all comes down to casting cost. I had to so as to keep the casting cost of the cards down so they could be playable.
If you're still with me and are interested...
The TMI answer I had wanted to make average human level strength/toughness at about 3/3. But a generic 3/3 creature(no special abilities, flight, or anything...just a plain ground pounder) will cost you (3)(X), where the (3) is generic mana and X is 1 specific colored mana.
Every Legionnaire gets a flight ability. All get an activated ability, but some have it natural, so they will have two. Hey, flight rings for everybody. One instance of flight will add at least (1) to the cost, so make it (4)(X).
Making them multi-colored changes the cost to (2 or 3)(X)(Y), where Y is 1 different specific colored mana. It's harder to cast a (X)(Y) multi-color creature, hence the reduced cost. Add in one ability and the cost goes up, sometimes by (2 or 3) more, and often by an added (X), (Y), or even a (Z). A second ability, even more. A keyword ability, more again. Remember, these have normal strength/toughness.
To make a Blok, Ultra Boy, Mon-El, or Superboy would put the strength/toughness in the 6/6 or more area. The casting cost would start at least at (5 or 6)(X)(Y), before additions. They would never get into play.
It pained me to know that the majority could be wiped out by a single activation of "Pestilence" or some other measly 1 point killing spell, but that was the trade off. This project has given me a great amount of respect for the R&D department at Wizards and every other gaming company.
Whew! M-E Lad, if you're still here, I hope that answered your question. Thanks for looking and asking.
