The Dawnstar thing will be announced later.

Dawnstar's contest is up!
Posted by Yellow Kid on :
Those are just beautiful...even in b/w.
My first one for this thread.
Posted by Sketch Lad on :
I've snagged my Shawn picture and colored it and am now working on my Dawnstar submission!
Posted by White Raven on :
I found another Ah! and a Black and White Grell, I was thinking of adding them to Dawnstar's side.
Posted by White Raven on :
Thank you to Roland Reedy for these two!

Hopefully I'll have some free time this weekend to get working on this. I've got the Rio Dawny started, but haven't been able to do much with it yet.
Meanwhile, if you haven't seen it yet, check out this 3D Dawnstar that Kat has posted on her Dawnstar Contest page. It's incredible!
Posted by Yellow Kid on :
Wow!

Okay, this isn't really finished, but I've never liked this costume, and I don't know if I can be bothered finishing it off more than I have already (I prefer this colour scheme to the "real" one, but it's the suit itself that's the problem)

Just as a matter of fact, I've nearly finished coloring ALL of Shawn's Legion girls.
It's just so much fun!
Posted by Loser Lad on :
Here's a smaller version ofthe Al Rio Dawnstar I colored. The full-size version is way too large to post here.
Here's a link for anyone who wantes to see the full-size version. Just a word of warning for those of you on dialup, it's a huge file (770 x 1129 pixels, 642 KB).

Something like 80% done (work still to do on both figure & bg), but I'm not going to get it finished in the next week or so, so may as well post this. The sketchy look of the shadows, though, is deliberate
Any feedback?

Those wings are great. Nice effect there.

Loser and S.L.: Nice takes on these Cockrum/Grell/Sherman era women, especially Imra. The color is making them almost (ahem! ) three-dimensional.
Is Shawn van Briesen a professional comics artist? I don't recall seeing his published work, though I've seen it in fan-art circles for some time.
The Dawnstars all look great, I emoted over some of them on other threads. SoM, that sketchy look is a potent idea, but I'd like to see it more finished, so I hope you have some time for it.

Dean, you made Perez's sketch pop off the page, and that skin color happens to just about hit at how I've always seen it for Dawny. "Light copper," not deeper in brown, but not the color of a new one-cent piece, either.
I wish the van Sciver Dawny sketch original .jpg were bigger, as it's being made the subject of such interesting coloring.
Does anyone know if van Sciver is a professional comics artist? ... I guess this matters to me because my own choice of filing system separates "FanArt" folders from "ProArt" folders.

Lou, your Dawnstar took my breath away! Really! I think that is your best work yet!
Posted by Lightning Lad on :
Grey, if it is Ethan van Sciver then yes, he is a pro. He's done New X-Men and Impluse. Currently I believe he is the artist (cover and interior) for Green Lantern: Rebirth.

Grey, glad you like the colors I did. I was a bit concerned that the skin on Perez's drawing was too red, but I decided to keep it that way. For the vanBriesen's I decided to make the colors very vivid and overdo some lighting effects. If I were to do them again, I'd go for more of a Vargas-like pastel effect.

Got VanBriesen's Tinya finished.

Okay, now finished (in theory ):

Another packet of poo tickets but I had fun with this one. Whoever's Dream Girl inspired me to have a bash at Chameleon Girl.
I have tried a couple of bits and bobs on here so any feedback is always good.

Thats some nice work loser have a gold star and a cup cake.

Not 100% finished, but it's borderline-presentable now, anyway Finished (I know this wasn't one of the images presented, but the Van Sciver one was the only one that lept out at me):
Oh, and if I ever consider backlighting anything ever again, please shoot me first.

That's awesome Reboot!
Posted by Greybird on :
This one creates much greater drama, with the backlighting, as against the sidelighting in your take on the van Briesen Dawny. (That last was a valiant try, but I found it darker and more sketchy than it really needed to convey the mood.)
I'd say the one above is already dramatic, well worth the effort, and I wonder what further changes you have in mind.
It also shows a deep-space traveler in what I'd see as a common situation, being backlit by a nearby star. Comics printing techniques in 1988 didn't allow for easily showing a viewpoint such as this, though they might now.

Fair enough. The sketchiness was my not-be-like-the-crowd-iness coming out again - I liked the idea, and I fully expected someone else to do a "day" version anyway (as Dean did), so I went for it. The darkness/edge-light was supposed to convey that it was the very last rays of day, after sunset but before the sky completely fades, but I'm not sure how well that came across

No major changes, just tidy-up. As usual, I'm not happy with the shadow, and I haven't tidied up all the line edges yet.

Not so much a full colour, more a sort of hinting:

It's too bad she's not a Legionnaire currently. Dawny is one of the most popular of the group when it comes to fanart, she attracts a lot of attention just because of her look. I see some really beautiful pieces in that contest gallery. I think just having her on a cover makes people look at it and if they look at it they might buy it, etc. etc.

To vary the old Yiddish saying: From your mouth to Wacker's ears! (And Waid's. In the beginning is the word.)

Yeah!
I gotta remind Barry that he owes us a Dawnstar sketch. Maybe we could even hustle James Pascoe into coloring it. -a twofer-
