The Post-Boot Original Legionnaires ("P-BOLs") Wing will be opening December 1st (November 30th if you can't wait ) so I just wanted to set this up early. We love brand new submissions (stories, poems, prose, novels, artwork, action figures, statues, busts, micros, etchings, etc.) but we certainly want your existing work posted in the galleries too! Come join us on December 1st for the Post-Booty slappin' action!

Bring on the P-BOLs! I did a bunch of sketches and cartoons this time cause I have so many photomanipulation projects right now I didn't have time.
First up, Kid Quantum II (whom I have a larger scan of and is begging to be colored *hint hint* ):
Then here's Magno in trouble with and XS:

Okay, first some reposts...
I've colored two versions of XS, the first drawn by Mike Weringo, the second by Jeff Moy.
Posted by Loser Lad on :
Some Post-Boot Orignials mixing it up with some of the non originals.
First is Kinetix and Violet, drawn by Jeff Moy, second is Shikari and Wildfire, from Gina Robotgirl's Chibi Legion...
Posted by Loser Lad on :
Finally, some new stuff, colored for this gallery. First up is Gates, drawn by Jeff Moy. I apologize in advance for the ultra-loud colors on this one. I don't know what that background's all about...
Finally, here's my version of Thunder, pencils by Matt Haley, inked by Tom Simmons. It was originally printed in Legion Secret Files and Origins #2 back in 1999. I found the black and white version of this on Haley's website, and thought I'd give it a go.

MEL, LOVE the KidQ drawing! Thunder, too! I have a drawing of Gear that looks almost just like yours! Coming soon. The Magno cartoon is pretty cute, but Monstress and Kinetix fighting over a tube top is HILARIOUS!! Anyone can say what they want, but I miss the stuff that made people call it the Archie Legion! I suppose it would have been better if there were better adventures to go aside the silliness...
Anyway....
Lou, the colors are great, as always.
DrakeB, yes, we've seen those before, but they're just terrific!
I have some stuff coming soon...
Posted by Monkey Eater Lad on :
Thanks Sketchy! I had fun (at work) drawing those
I really like Los' coloring, esp. on the drake/shikari toon on the all of the and use of lighting on Drake's XS.
Where's all the other contributions?!? Harbinger? Cru? Cobie? I know there's a lot more creative folks out there!
Here's an old photomanip I did of Rosario "yep, those are my boobies in Alexander" Dawson as XS:

Here's Monkey Eater Lad's awesome Kid Quantum II pic colored.
Funny, in over 4 years since I started working with Photoshop I think this may be the first time I actually used the lens-flare filter. Not sure if I like the effect or not. It kind of kills some of the shading on the right side of her body.
Oh well. Simple solution is to post one with the lens flare and one without. So here they be...
Posted by Sketch Lad on :
Cool, Lou! If you go to some of the other artists' sites/message boards, they'll massacre you if you use the lens flare. I, however, still use it and find it can quite enhance certain images. I have to admit, though, that at first, I used it for no reason except cuz it was kewl. Now I actually try to use it like in my above picture and in your above picture, to show that a light source is affecting the "camera."
Posted by Loser Lad on :
I used to compete in the Photoshop contests at Worth 1000 in another lifetime. There the lens flare (and other "gratuitous" use of filters) was considered a Cliche and was disallowed. If you used a lens flare in one of your entries it would be disqualified, period.
I generally don't like to use effects that call attention to themselves, but in this case I thought it was appropriate. The way MEL drew her hand it was obvious she would be summoning her power with it, and the lens flare seemed to be the easiest way to display the use of her power. Still, there was a part of me that felt a little dirty using it, going back to my Worth days...
Posted by Loser Lad on :
I have two more Post-Boot Original pics that I colored (actually it's two different versions of the same pic), but I can't post them here due to content. I will link to them however if anyone wants to see them.
The pic is from the Erotic Gallery on Kat's Jeff Moy Sketchboard. The drawing is of Kinetix cooling down on a hot day in her quarters. The pic was originally of her in her "pointy ears and tail" phase, but I altered it to reflect her normal human form as well. I'll link to both versions.
WARNING: Partially veiled nudity in the following links! Don't open at work with your boss standing over your shoulder!
Cru, Lou, Drake, MEL, Dean--awesome! The post-booters are lookin' good! This actually makes me sad that we won't be seeing these guys anymore (for awhile at least).
Dean, I have a feeling the posters of LW will be FIGHTING like crazy for that Kinetiz pic as they're avatar . Poppin' Hotties!

Wow, Lou, she's lookin'awesome in color! Love the shading, thanks! And Sketchy, man those have got awesome attitude to them! The three of them look like they could start a pop group together! Move over Beyonce, Kelly, and that other girl, Inevitability's Offspring are takin' over!

Thanks you guys! I got some nifty new pens, so I couldn't resist inking the Jazmin drawing. I was concerned about losing some of the "life" in the Zoe drawing, so I didn't ink it and the Thunder drawing just feels right as a sketch. I still have a couple other PB Original characters that I've sketched, but they're not done yet.

Thanks Viv. I had to tone down the effect quite a bit to get it to work the way I wanted it to without completely obliterating the lighting I was trying to establish. Looking back at it a day or so later I'd say I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out now.
And Dean, why not repost the Moy Kid Q and Shikari you posted for Kat's challenge? That definitely belongs in this gallery!

I couldn't resist "Legionizing" the presents in Gates' bag a bit. So, that's a Brainy teddy bear, a baby Tinya doll, Bouncing Boy basketball, and of course, a little yellow and red rocket ship in there.

Many great creations in this thread, I'm sorry I haven't been giving nods to all of them yet, but they deserve it.
Shikari looks exotic and ... I don't know ... substantive, somehow. Maybe it's seeing her outfit with gray fabric, rather than having the illusion that it was her skin that was exposed. The ears are an elegant touch. Were they pointed in the books?
And as to Gates (never one of my faves), that's one of the first depictions of him to make me smile, though I doubt he'd be doing much to celebrate a holiday as bourgeois as Christmas!

Glad you like it! I didn't think you'd mind if I altered it just a smidge.
I originally planned on just throwing the rocket ship Clubhouse in there. Then about half way through it I got the idea to make the other presents into Legionesque ones. Now that I'm looking at it again I should have put name tags on the various gifts. The Legion Clubhouse to Rokk, Tinya doll to Jo, Brainy bear to Lyle, etc. Oh well. Still pretty happy with it as is.

The cool thing about that pic is the look on Gates' face. Yes, he's playing Santa, but he definitely does not look happy about it in the least. It's almost as if he's doing it against his will, which I think does fit his character quite well.

No doubt Gates developed a fondness for the lyrics of Arlo Guthrie while in the 20th century:
Santa Clause has a red suit He's a communist And a beard, and long hair Must be a pacifist What's in the pipe that he's smoking? Posted by Lady Crujectra on :

I'm glad that came through a little. It was the look I was going for, but found it hard to convey with really only the pupilless eyes and body language to work with. There's only so much expression you can put into a beak

Keeping with my holiday theme, here's Kinetix. Again, I've never tried drawing her before, so my apologies to her fans if I messed her up at all
Posted by Loser Lad on :
It's great Jeckie! See, the great thing about Kinetix is that she changed so much over time that you can draw he just about any way you'd like and still be right!
You can draw her with a skirt, and guess what? You're right! You can draw her with a cape and puffy sleeves, and guess what? You're right! You can draw her with pointy ears and a tail and guess what? Right again! Hell, you can even draw her as a 7 foot tall evolutionary nightmare with no nipples that walks around naked all the time! It's a win-win situation!
Posted by Sketch Lad on :
Wow, Lady Cru, it's weird that you've never drawn Zoe before this. She's seems like your cup of tea...
Your drawing is very good. Wouldn't it be nice to have her powers when decorating for Christmas? Especially for positioning lights! I hope Lou finds time to color this one, too.

Here's what I've got on these guys and gals. They're all from the fall of 2003. I've actually made some 'improvements' to some of these since these pics were taken, but I don't have new pics up on the web yet.
Thunder is the one figure that I've actually made two of. I basically had an attack of kindness and gave this figure away. Glad I got that out of my system.
I have since added more legs to Gates and joined his head to his body better so that you can't see his snap.
Xs is still the same.
I've added eyes to Jazmin since this picture was taken. Some day, now that I have a little more confidence, I'm going to remake this figure. For now though, she'll do.
I've added a tail and a tattoo to her face since this picture was taken.

COOL FIGURES!!!!!!!
did you sculpt them yourself? (i'm assuming you did)....and what did you use?.....too cool, way too cool
Posted by minesurfer on :
Thanks Dedman. Welcome to the Board and let me say excellent work on your manips.
For the most part, my figures are pieces of other figures that I've cut up and epoxied back together to give the illusion that I want. There are some elements of my custom figure that I've sculpted myself... boot cuffs, bracers, Cos' shoulder things, some hair, and the like. The only body parts I've sculpted from scratch are Gates' and Tellus' heads.
For fine detail work, I like to use Super Sculpey or Premo. These are PVC clays that cure when you heat them. They're not sticky to work with which is why they are good for details. The drawback is that even when they are cured, they are still easily damaged.
Recently I've started using products like Kneadatite and Magic Sculp. These are 2-part epoxie clays that cure to be very hard. Kneadatite is a little more flexible when cured, but they both are excellent products. The problem with these two are that they are very sticky to work with and you only have about an hour or two of working time before they start to cure. They're still sandable once cured, but they both provide alot more strength than the heat cured clays.

Posted by Loser Lad on :
That she does!
Interesting choice to paint her in her original She-Hulk ripoff green-skinned appearance. Was this done before her look changed or did you just prefer that look for her?
Love your customs by the way, but I believe I've told you that before.
Posted by minesurfer on :
Don't fret it Ded. You can really never hear that enough.
I finished Monstress in the Spring of 2004 so basically I could have gone with any look. I went with the green skin, basically because that's how I remember her. Orange seemed like change for change's sake in the comics. Not only that, but when Coipel got a hold of her, he made her a little too simian for my tastes. I wanted her to be muscular, bright, feminine, and thick, but not ape-y.
Usually when I'm in a dilemma on which paint scheme, I tend to go with first appearance looks as far as the reboot goes. With Monstress here, orange can be a pain in the rear to paint... acryllically speaking of course. Green seems to cover and look better in general. The only color I dislike painting more than orange is yellow. It can take upto six or seven coats to get it looking right.
Posted by Loser Lad on :
Cool. As far as Monstress goes though, I don't think the change was for change's sake (though it was played off that way in-continuity), but more to avoid being sued by Marvel for appropriating one of their copyrighted characters!
Anyhow, I hear you about certain colors being more troublesome to work with than others. I find the same thing when doing my coloring. Can't stand working with red. It doesn't look right when shading, and it gets really messed up by jpeg compression when saving. I usually color all my red layers in blue, which takes shading much better, and then change the color with a hue/saturation adjustment layer after I'm done to make it look red. That's how I did all the reds on the Thunder pics I colored here, and most of the the pics I've colored in my Gallery. Much easier to "cheat" in Photoshop than with real paint!

I do my painting in acrylic too and i find i have the same problem with yellow too (as well as oranges and reds) However I've found using a base coat of Ivory helps the paint show up as its meant to much easier. Hope this helps
