Dawny Come Home
She flew always in first, always ahead of the rest she exemplified the Legion, when the Legion was at it's best Independent and aloof, she never compromised And it's time her role in the Legion was finally reprised
A love that was true, but never meant to be a woman whose love transcended physical necessity she was sharp and quick-witted, although not everyone saw eye to eye but everyone agreed that see she was beautiful in the sky
Oh, those beautiful wings, and oh, that gorgeous hair she was a beacon of Legion energy, that was always clear, And although she's been through some pretty crappy things There's a new Legion now, and it's Dawny I hope it brings
There are lots of other Legionairres and even another tracker with a different name But I demand something differnt--So Please come home Dawny without you, the Legion just ain't the same

All are stellar contributions thus far. Dean: You're making me get a Dawny/Kari written vignette on "paper," and I'll get to it this weekend. Des: I'll second that whole poem!
Since this is about any and all Legionnaires (and friends) with wings, I'll include art created by Kyle Baxter from the conclusion to my fanfic short story. Check it out to find out how Lar got that way!

I love all these submissions but I gotta give a special shout out to deanlegion's second image. You draw the most romantic Dawny EVER!
I forgot, here's the notes for mine: Here's Alex Rice (Sopranos) as my imagining of a postboot Dawnstar. Dawnstar was never reintroduced after the Legion reboot but Shikari seems to be based off of her. Anyways, I thought it might be fun to figure out what Dawnstar might look like if she was introduced in current continuity. I got rid of the fringe tassley things but did keep the head gear and orangey gold color. Anyways, have fun...

Monkey EL, thank you for the generous comment. I love to draw Dawnstar, I always have. I only wish I could devote the time to rendering each feather and muscle. Actually, I wish some bored inker was out there hoping for a sketchy pencil artist who's work they could improve upon...
Anyway, I'm loving all the Wing Work so far, and I think it's only fair that the Legion's other winged friend, Ornitho, should get some attention. However, it'll have to be after this weekend's festivities...

(And if you work up something on the Mighty McCaw, you get bonus points!)

I'm always stunned by the creativity that abounds on Legion World. These are all fantastic! Dawnstar really is beautiful, and all the depictions bring that out.
Dean's Dawny with closed eyes, facing Shikari - wonder what they're thinking? Very sultry indeed, perfect!
Drake's moment in flight, wings and fringe straight up - eyes on the distance - she must be moving her arms in concert with her wings, something I never considered; Shikari's coloured wing pattern, like an aura or an energy field.
MEL's beautiful manip - love the fringeless, barefoot look and the way the wings curl around her.
Cobie's love poem! which tells her story, and her fans' story!
Kyle Baxter's large, colour-flecked wings, even though I'm still not used to seeing them on Lar!
Minesurfer, that must be the only Dawnstar doll around - where did the wings come from? That must have taken some time to put together all those little pieces, belt, fringed boots. Great result!
Now all we need is old what's his name... Ornitho.
Posted by Greybird on :
Minesurfer's Dawnstar figure isn't the only one that's been around -- others are sold every few months on eBay. Yet it's by far the best I've ever run across, keeping the fully articulated limbs while giving a unique and kinetic look to her.
Do check out his whole CustomCon Legion set, if you haven't yet ... more tenacity of design, hand, knife, and glue gun than I could ever manage.
Oh, by the way ... wouldn't some permutations of Lana Lang's alter ego qualify for the Wing wing, as well?

Thanks for the kind words. Just for the record, they are action figures. Not dolls. I would never play with dolls.
Let me agree with your sentiments... There are some fantastically talented people on this forum. I wish I had just a fraction of the artistic talent that some of the people here do, or the gift for story telling. Since I don't, I do what I can and that means I can glue stuff together real good.
Actually Dawnstar went together fairly easily. The body and wings came on the same base figure, they are from a Ninja Deathbird (part of the old Toy Biz X-Men line). All I did was boil and pop the original head and put on the one you see; It came from a Psylocke figure. Standard repaint stuff after that. I've got the belt down to a science after having done so many, I pretty much do them while I'm watching TV and hardly realize when I've finished them.

Again thanks for the kind words...There's actually a Dawnstar that I saw done by Davy in the animated style that I liked very much, I may try and contact him and see if it's alright that I post it here.
Don't kid yourself Grey, if I can do it... anybody can do it. As for Lana... I've got something cooking for Custom Con 11 coming up in a few months (October), I'll post that here to once it's unveiled.

Hey, great job with the story Dean!! (even though Drake got the shaft -- but that's just always his luck isn't it?) If this were a real story, I'm sure there would have been more time to develop the Dawny/Doctor relationship before Dawny decided that it was love. I can't help but think she would have had more angst about just dropping Wildfire, but that's me.
I like how the first page set up a possible danger when it was really a relationship problem she was running from. The Bounty/Drake in Dirk's body was a nice parallel, loved the big moment of Dawny seeing her wings returning (and not just cuz she was in her undies), Drake showing his "face" was a bit shocking, especially since he thought it would reassure her. I also liked the bits of Wildfire characterization where he humbly points out that she should be thanking the doc and also his internal angst of sensing her attraction to the doc and deciding they were through (or that he was being rejected) rather than actually confront the issue. The triple parallel narrative on the last page was also very nicely done!

"My wings! They're growing back!"
I have been waiting ten years for someone to depict this. Thank you, Dean!
You just closed an esthetic hole in my spirit.
What DrakeB said, immediately above, is about what I could say after climbing down from my exhilaration.
If she would be getting her body back -- all of it -- I believe she and Wildfire would have found that to be the time to move on. It's all shown briefly but vividly. You can tell a story, amigo, don't let anyone say anything different.
Christmas in July, indeed! In seven frames, and with three of Ornitho's presence to boot.

Woah!! Fantastic WANDERERS & Ornitho pics, Dean!
Posted by deanlegion on :
DrakeB3003, Glad you liked the story. You really noticed a lot of the points that mattered. I will say, though, that all the things on the last page are just being thought. No one has made any declarations or actual decisions yet. In my mind, and I may be blowing the next chapter by saying this, Dawny just has a crush on the bearer of good news. The fact that he's handsome doesn't hurt. As a Wildfire fan, I'm sure you were paying attention to him in this story. Obviously, he and Dawny have more discussions to have about the body and soul issue. I have ideas about that. I think Dr. Michael is a bit naive and a bit of a goody two shoes. I have plans for this love triangle!
Grey, I'm glad page 5 worked so well. You don't know how bad I wish some bored inker was out there wishing for some semi-rough pencils for him/her to use to master his/her craft. I just cannot make the time to polish off or ink my artwork.
I do plan on finishing this story, I have some ideas. Perhaps I can keep you interested by telling you the name of an upcoming chapter..."Next First Flight." Be there.
LASH!! Thanks! It's actually pretty hard to draw the costumes that Win Mortimer designed because his characters are always in action. Also, he was guilty of being a tad inconsistent from panel to panel, so some of it is guessing. I am still somewhat fascinated with drawing contemporary versions of his groovy characters, though. He had some doozies! Glad you like.
You guys keep me going when I don't really have time or energy to keep going!
Posted by Greybird on :
"Perhaps I can keep you interested"? "This love triangle"?? "Discussions about the body and soul issue"??? "Next First Flight"????
And you exhort me needlessly to "Be there." Wild super-powered horses couldn't drag me away, amigo.
Posted by DrakeB3003 on :
Dean -- great to hear that this really is only the "beginning" of the story. I look forward to seeing how this develops. We haven't had the ol' Drake/Dawny angsty lovestory in quite awhile! I certainly hope time opens up for you one day so you can grace us with some finished work!
Turning my attention to the other great work here: dean -- great to see Dawny and Shikari stand toe to toe -- and cheek to cheek! My my, that is indeed one sexy Dawnstar (now that'd be an interesting love triangle...). M-E Lad -- I like the barefoot look -- very in keeping with her imagery (and she's certainly tough enough to not really need footwear). Oh yeah, she's also pretty sexy too (hubba hubba). I watch the Sopranos but didn't recognize the actress which helps the illusion. Cobalt Kid -- you rhyme-meister you! Great sentiments and nicely constructed. Makes me miss her presence all the more. Grey -- thanks for sharing. The M'on/Dawny pairing makes more sense the more I see it. minesurfer -- nice looking figure -- love the wings and the updated costume -- she looks tough! Fat Cramer -- It wasn't my intention to have Dawny flapping her arms. i just like the look of the fringes flying up (must be the cosmic currents )
I kinda miss Numf's contributions - his previous one's have been very original. Maybe for the founders...?

You know, it's funny, one thing that really struck in looking at Dean's pages (though I've noticed it before), is that it really seems like there's something missing when Dawnstar is drawn without wings. You'd think she'd just look like a normal humanoid, so it wouldn't be that jarring, but I consistently find it somewhat unnerving to see her depicted without wings.
Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :
And thanks for the Ornitho as well, Dean!
Posted by deanlegion on :
EDE, I agree with you, that Dawnstar just doesn't look like Dawnstar without wings. Also, Immonen drew her with layered hair, which is a major superficial change for her, so I went with that in my sequences. I kept looking at my own drawings of her, imagining them with the silky straight parted-in-the-middle hairstyle, asking myself if her facial features were right. Glad you like the Ornitho drawings, too. Mortimer kept the mask really simple, but Giffen gave it more flair. It was interesting to decide how to draw him.
I've written/sketched several pages to follow up on the Dawnstar Story. I'll be scanning and posting when I get the chance. Gotta get done before the end of July! Deadlines!

Exactly! What's fun is that we don't yet know how many bumps will occur along the road. Drake's situation is similar to what many families live with today. He's the father of a child, who's mother he doesn't love or want to be with. How will they arrange all this?
I'm pleased with my idea that there is incredible power on Manna-5, but under the control of a couple of flakes. That was meant to echo real life, too.
Dawnstar has to search her soul to see if she can be with Drake in Dirk's body. Can she kiss Dirk's lips even though Drake is the one bringing them to her?
I really enjoyed working on this. I wish I could spend more time on finished art instead of just rough breakdowns.
Posted by DrakeB3003 on :
Thanks for sharing -- it's always great to see someone contribute with an obvious enthusiasm for the characters. I'm definitely interested to see where this goes. Wildfire with a real body though?? I dunno ... I just love the faceplate too much I think.
I'd still love to one day see what finished work from you would look like.

As for finished art from me, watch out for the Founders Wing! I have a plan...
Thanks for responding DrakeB3003!
Posted by Greybird on :
I fully enjoyed this latest 16-page story. Many arcs of emotion got across to us in a minimal positioning of several characters. That Dawny swooped in at the end to rescue Drake and his child was elegant, appropriate, and exciting, all at once.
It did have one touch, though, of its being abrupt to me: Dawny wouldn't have reacted to such a sudden reversal of their status quo over many years with a mere "Nice body." Even with being more recently emotionally estranged, even with its being a healed version of a body once used by Dirk, she would have been quite joyous for him about that change.
Sixteen pages can't tell everything, I admit, and that's still only a minor point against your creativity here, Dean.
I can appreciate your storytelling impulse, and I'm glad to see it ... yet I'd still be excited by seeing a more finished version of some of these panels, some day. Such as Dawny staggering at last into the air with full wings and aching grin (and that was a nice transition to the mother's labor). Or Dawny's pulling father and son so adeptly out of harm's way.
Posted by deanlegion on :
Grey, glad you fully enjoyed the story!
I feel like Drake and Dawnstar still have a lot to get through if they want to be together, however, I honestly think that they can manage.
Thank you for your response. Maybe someday I'll ink and color those "second first flight" pages...
Posted by Fat Cramer on :
Interesting story, Dean; it shows how life can get a little messy sometimes - but ends with hope. I'd like to see the post-rescue conversation between Dawnstar & Wildfire expanded upon - or continued! They've both changed, but they both care for each other. I could see her saying something curt to Drake - her taciturn way of dealing with many mixed emotions when she first sees him and his son.
Loved the little details you add in - her star on the chain, the burnt Dirk figure as he was in 5YL, the Wildfire symbols reflected in Dawnstar's eyes.
Posted by deanlegion on :
Thanks, FC! I'm glad you picked up on those details.
