You might enjoy trying a Create Your Own Super Hero "contest" that DC is running. By going here you can choose shapes and colors of seven aspects of "your own" character.
I found out about it when browsing in the store through "Justice League Adventures," with Hawkgirl on the cover ... winged woman, natch.
It's a fairly obvious imitation of the infinitely more customizable HeroMachine, but it's also a good way to get your feet wet with the concept. I've included my own Bruce-Timm-ish result below ... winged girl, natch.
You can even print your creation out ... but you have to first choose his or her fave Hostess snack to do so. My "Silverbird" says she likes HoHos. (I bit-twiddled that word balloon outta there when I screen-captured what Shockwave Flash had generated.)
You can enter the "contest" (random drawing) by giving e-mail address and birth date, whether you make a "hero" or not. Deadline is Leap Year / Oscar-cast Day.
The first, last, and singular prize is having your own likeness and that of "your hero" (if any) drawn into a DC book, being flown with a guest to New York for three days, and getting a "VIP tour" of the DC offices. Where you can exhort Paul Levitz to print more Legion post-boot trade paperbacks ... or whatever.

I'm there! (If for only the free trip to NY and the DC Offices!)
Thanks for the heads up, Grey!

Some other informative and (well, to me) entertaining notes ...
~ The drawing is only for residents of the 50 U.S. states and Dee Cee. Sorry, our large Oceania and British contingents here are outta luck.
~ Entries are one-per-e-mail-address or one-per-household. It's ambiguous in the rules, but nothing seems to rule out entering more than once from multiple e-addresses. Except, that is {cue majestic John Williams music}, your sense of H O N O R as a Super Hero ...
~ Speaking of SUPER HERO®, it says that this trademark is "licensed by DC Comics on behalf of its joint owners." Which are DC and Marvel. You may not have thought it likely or even possible, but it's true, and I long ago looked it up.
~ DC's lawyers don't drink enough coffee. The on-line official rules refer to two of the sponsors as "Cartoon Network (there are several Cartoon Network companies. We need to find out which one(s) are participating in this sweeps)," and "Hostess® (is this the full corporate legal name, if not please find out)". Research and proofreading, counselors! It's always worth the money! {g}

I like your Silverbird Grey. I wish the had more options, like HeroMachine. I can make an Imra but nothing close to Garth is available.
Posted by Lightning Lad on :
Here's my entry: Catalyst. Can you guess what his powers are?
Posted by Saturn Girl on :
Here is Imra's baby sister, Jancil.

And here's my version of Tasmia:

Kewl! I plan to check this out too!
The designs look great guys!
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
How were you able to get them posted here? Do I have to print them out, scan them and send them to you? Computer stuff is sooo confusing!
I even made Cobalt Kid and Space Tart!
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
OK, now I've made about six of these! I want to post them, but I just don't know how! I don't think I can copy them though!
Grey, Scooter and Caroline, how did you do it?

OK, so far I've done them for Cobalt Kid, Space Tart, Poverty Lad, Invisible Brainiac, Giant Squid and new characters Princess Tarina and Danger Damsel, whole I'll be using in my Onevision series!

The lack of variety in hat designs is quite disconcerting!

Hi Cobie! Scott posted mine. I put them together but he had to come sit in my chair and post them. He's the computer brain. But he's finally calmed down from the panic and shock and high blood pressure of our car being stolen and he's crashed out for a nap. What else can he do anyway until they deliver a rent-a-car tomorrow morning. This is so frustrating and scary, and none too embarrassing. 22 yrs with the Sheriff's Office and I retire and have my car stolen. Yes Officer, it WAS LOCKED, even the parking brake was on. And NO it was not running to warm it up. We figure it happened between 1AM and 4AM, and our bedroom is on the opposite side of the house from the garage.
Now the case CAN be made that had we unpacked the boxes we have stacked in the garage from the move, the car would have been safely inside. Silly us for not wanting to unpack boxes in single digit weather!
Anyway, Scott will wake up and help you post your six creations Cobie.

I fooled around with this for quite a while this afternoon, here's one I came up with after some modifying in Photoshop and Draw.
Just call her "Cute Lil Devil"
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
Cool! Nicely done Chuck!
Caroline, thanks so much for the help! And tell Scott I said thanks to, but to get his rest! Having a car stolen is absolutely dreadful, and you guys are in my thoughts. What a terrible way thing to have to deal with.
And I have six of them just waiting to be posted

These dolls are fun. They have the same basic components but can look individual too. They are all great. Love the eyewear on Grey's and the softer bat wings on AQ's little demon.
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
The thing is, I don't know how to copy them from the site, there's no "copy picture" thing to hit. I'm totally computer illiterate...
Posted by Lightning Lad on :
Cobie, you need to have a paint program to capture them. You hit the print button and then get a preview of the image before you actually print it. From that page you would use a paint program to capture it, edit out the 'I Love' comment and whatever other changes you want to make.
If you don't have a paint program you could always e-mail me what you did and I could try to recreate them for you.
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
That sounds good Scott, thanks for the help!
How would I know if I have a paint program? I know that I have a ton of programs on my laptop that my roomate installed for me, so I might have one. (My laptop is only eight months old).
Where would a paint program be on my computer and how would I use it to capture it?
Thanks for the help too, I know it's been a rough day for you, so I appreciate your patience for a completely computer illiterate young man.
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
I have one program that says under accessories that says "Paint". Do you think that'll work?
Posted by Lightning Lad on :
I don't have Paint installed on mine so bear with me if this doesn't work. Start the program up and see if there is an option in 'Tools' or something similar and see if it has an 'Import' or 'Capture' function. If it doesn't then you can use it to capture the images.
I know there is a freebie program out there that Grey has talked about that can help you do it but I can't remember the name and don't know if you even want to install more software. So if Paint doesn't work we can work through you designs so we can get them posted.
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
Thanks Scott! I'll give it a try now and see what I can come up with
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
BTW, how are you able to get the images to Legion World? Do you just print them and scan them?
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
Damn, no luck, I couldn't find a capture or import function in the paint program. I'll PM you some of the designs, but you can get to them whenever. I feel kind of bad having to have you go through the website and create six characters!
Thanks for the help though Scooter!
Posted by Lightning Lad on :
No problem Cobbie. It helps not to think about other things, no what I mean?
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
I definately do, so the pleasure is all mine . Thanks Scott!
Oh, and I hope I didn't mess up with my directions for certain colors (when I said seven from right, I may have meant from left, etc., but we'll see).
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
A big thank you to Scott!
Hopefully I can do this right...

Once again, thanks Scooter (and Caroline and Grey)!

Glad you're enjoying it, amigos y amigas! Funky creations here!
And as to getting the free IrfanView "Swiss Army graphics" tool, with notes on how to use it to do screen captures, see the new and currently featured topic.
One tip for saving the Shockwave Flash results from this DC site: When you've used its "Print" choice to display the previewed image, you can right-click on the image and choose "Zoom In" to enlarge it. You'll probably need to thus Zoom In and Zoom Out at two or three points to do more than one screen capture, but you'll corral notably more detail.
(The same considerations apply to using HeroMachine, by the way, which also runs on Shockwave Flash, and doesn't have its own facility for saving your visual results -- though you can and should save the HeroMachine text-code for re-creating your figure.)

As with every internet competition I've ever seen that wasn't run by an Aussie company.

"Notting Hill" bump ... Grant and Roberts, with priceless understated delivery:
"What's so funny?" "You have big feet." "Yes. Always have had." "You know what they say about men with big feet ..." "No. What do they say?" "Big feet, large ... ... shoes."
Oh, and only a month remains to enter the drawing. Post some more of your creations!
Posted by Invisible Brainiac on :
Darn! I want to have big feet too!
But then, I've heard that they smell a lot more than normal-sized feet...
Posted by Greybird on :
A bump ... your last chance to enter the drawing on line is 29 February, Leap Year / Oscarcast Day!
You can do it without creating a super-hero, o'course, but what fun is that? Screen-capture and display your creation here!
