I need your help! I know that most of you are good at writing, have a good sense of humor and enjoy comic books! It only makes sense that you post in the tag threads! Why not? C'mon!

There are currently three going on right now! Don't know the whole back story? Who cares! Don't have anything to add? Bullshit, I'm sure you have something witty, interesting or a plain comment that reminds why we love you!

Pick one of the threads and add a post! If you do, I will mail you fifty dollars through the United States postal service (sorry Lash, I have to steal this old idea)...

Do it for Legion World! For the LMBP! Or for just $50!

Tomorrow, tomorrow! I need the $150!!

Alright FC!

I'm not much good, really, without a plot. It took an hour of thinking for me to make a single contribution to "Hot Summer Nights" last year.

Y'all are free to have Grey Birdboy take part, but I can't even think up my own dialogue *sigh*

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Grey, I've used Greybird Boy (and Kid Prime) as the main LMBer in the resistance in the Ms. Grundy thread!

I know you could post something funny when your in the mood [Wink] . I've been listening to you make witty comments for four years now <rueful grin>. I know what you mean though, sometimes, I just force a post if I see the tag threads falling low on the page.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

And I see the rest of your names out there! You can't hide from me!

$50! What do you say?!

I would but I can't write*****ahem***** [Roll Eyes] [Good]

I'll let Harbinger know though, she'll do virtually anything for some galaxy chocolate so lord only knows what she'll do for £50...

Harbinger, your chocolate and $50 (or Scottish equivalent) is in the mail!

Thanks Sonnie!

Cobie, what is the start date and time on that offer? I figure I've already broken your bank. But since I want to see some of these guys put their astounding talents and senses of humor on display. I will voluntarilly donate my share back to the cause.

Vee, Semi, Icey, Sonnie, Danny, STU, where are you? I'm warning you guys, there are a bunch more nasty little ultra conservitive right wing plot twists coming in Mrs. Grundy if you don't stop me.

Come on, I already gave you a Piano and a portrait worth over a Million Dollars, do you really need Cobie's Fifty Bucks too?

Sonnie, thanks for that wonderful idea, right after Icefire and Umber's Marrage (with wedding planning done by the Bob Jones University Chapel Staff) She goes on a fifty's Retro shopping spree with a credit card stolen (*ahem* Borrowed) from Vee. I've got it half written.

Mrs. Grundy is getting better and better.

At the wedding, with his tux? Of course not! Nor will we talk about Vee sneaking off for a little "Quality Time" with Winema during the reception. Plenty of vacant rooms at the Legion World Holiday Inn.

Of course, now that I'm Thinking of the Wedding Plans, the reception will have to be Alcohol Free, and the entertainment will be provided by the Morman Tabernacle Lounge Singers, Marie Osmond and Kathie Lee Gifford.

Don't you have some lawns to mow, Cobie?

I just came back tonight - well past my bedtime! - to read Harbinger's opus and at least one of the tags. Just so you know I'm taking you seriously. [Wink] Maybe the board will go down before I actually have to do anything...

It's always a pleasure to read your posts FC!

I don't want your $50, Cobie - but I am now suspecting you must have one hell of a trust fund. Grad students don't have $50's to throw around very often (that's why I always avoided dating them [Big Grin] )

Seriously though, I hear your plea, and I will try to participate a bit more - tomorrow. It's just hard to find a block of time to think about what I'm going to write on this board. But tomorrow I'll do it.

However In Absolute Defiance of long established Legion World Traditions, he has asked me to remind contributors that for the first time in the history of Legion World the story on that tag team thread has a PLOT and a Defineable Sequence of Events. Legion World is a public message board. You really never know who will one day become a member here. As such, it might be a good idea to keep that in mind when composing posts or contributing to the story threads. If you are planning to be rude or crude in your post, consider the fact that the subject of that post might one day read that post, and might be hurt or offended by it.

Don't let your attempts at entertainment override your consideration for other people's feelings.

Sentients,

The second quote above was originally posted in the "Advice for New Posters" Thread in the Science Police Headquarters. The first is obviously the first lines of this thread.

Lately, there seems to be a rather disturbing trend taking over in the "Ongoing LMBP Tag Team" thread. A trend that has caused me to reluctantly make a decision to suspend any further involvement with that thread as either Abinquank? or Space Ranger. And to refuse to participate in any tag team threads which contain any hint of this type of thing in the future.

I have no idea what the circumstances of the "Flame War" between Lardy (and apparently several other posters) and the person currently being attacked by the storyline in "Ongoing" were. But I do know that "History Favors the Winner."

I deeply regret ever writing a single word on that thread after the introduction of the current storyline. Unfortunately I did and I can't change that. But I can refuse to participate further and I can go back and edit out any references to that person by any of her recognized names in my posts, and I can and do urge all other writer's to do the same.

There is a HUGE DIFFERENCE between using fictional characters and real people in these way over the top story lines. And that difference involves both personal choice and legal issues. Personal choice I leave to individuals, I make my choices you make yours, we each live with the results of those choices.

Possible Legal Issues are another matter.

The person being attacked in the "Ongoing" thread does not post here, has never posted here, and as far as I know has never posted anywhere the members here post, since losing the "Flame War".

So, where is the rationale for kicking that person around more coming from? And, What purpose does it serve? None as far as I can see.

But continuing with this nonsense does pose a very real danger to this message board. As stated in the quote by Crujectra above, this is a PUBLIC BOARD. Anyone can open this site and read everything posted here. And even if Gary and Scott once again place some minimal restrictions on entry to this board it won't reduce at all the possibility of that person or someone who knows her from seeing what has been written.

Gary and Scott have gone to great lengths to provide us with an amazing playground. Do we want to repay their generosity by opening this place up to the possibility of legal actions against it or them? All for the dubious pleasure of kicking around someone who left the boards a long time ago?

I suspect that most of us here don't know who is a "real person" and who is a fictional character on this board - not to mention the history from previous message board encounters. I certainly wasn't aware of this.

Perhaps a solution other than boycotting threads, forums or Legion World itself would be to remedy the situation. (1) Substitute another character, as has been done (retroactively?) and (2) continue the story along remedial lines.

This also applies to what Harbinger has also raised about the "increasingly misogynist" tone of the tag-team stories in the Critics thread.

A third and more drastic step would be to delete the posts from the point at which the story deviates from what is acceptable - or delete the entire thread. I wouldn't advocate this latter option, and certainly not without discussion among participants and LW general membership.

I'm all for fixing what's broken, not tipping it into the trash bin and walking away.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

FC, I'm all for fixing it to, and continuing the story along in the fun way that it started. I think going back to change some of the more "rough" parts of the story could be a good idea, and continuing on from there.

Chuck, I was going to PM you, but I've decided to just post this right here. As I've said, you are one of my favorite posters, and I always enjoy reading your posts, especially on the tag threads. I also enjoy the way we go back and forth and have fun with each other's ideas. You were the first person I really talked to on Legion World that I didn't know before, and I've enjoyed talking to you normally (as Abin) and in character in SP. So, I really hope you keep posting on all the tag threads, and keep having fun with them. I love reading your posts, and I would really be sad if you stopped posting on them. Please stay [Smile]

I originally recognized this as an issue a week ago after Grey PMed me, and I agreed with him, which is why I retroactively changed Carrina's name to disclude her from the story. The character now existing isn't her anymore, but I can see if people are still uncomfortable with her being in the story. In that case, I say let's just get her out in the next post and keep going. The whole idea of the "Ongoing Tag Thread" was to get it up into the same page numbers as SHAKES, so that LMBP continuity could become as convulted as the Legion or X-Men. I'd hate to stop now when it's only on page seven. And I'd really hate if Chuck stopped posting on it.

I'm having more fun online right now than I've had in awhile, and I want it to continue. So if anyone ever feels uncomfortable about anything, please let me know, I'd make any sacrifice to continue the fun! And I don't like any misogynist tones either, so I'll keep an eye on that [Smile]

One last time: please keep posting, we can fix the threads and Sweet Ass Sweet, Long live Legion World!!!

Oh, and do you want to start finishing the Ms. Grundy thread, or let it run a bit more?

I think I might start finishing the Dev-Em return thread, it seems like it hasn't been getting too much traffic lately...

Posted by Space Ranger on :

Des, (and Nancy)

It is the name that is the real problem. This storyline started with a post that virtually acknowleged that the character was a real person, and when you combine that with the psuedo-historical notes in the LMBP Continuity thread it becomes obvious that the entire thing was way over the top.

Since this storyline started, I have never used her name. The closest I came was using her Psuedonym's initials. And even that made me uncomfortable. Any name that can be tied to that person is out of the question as far as I'm concerned.

The over the top stuff we write is fine as long as it's all atributable to entirely fictional characters or doesn't become so offensive that we drive away our friends.

But, the issue of using a tag-team thread as a weapon in a personal vendetta against a real person is one that just totally disgusts me and I'm ashamed that it took me so long to stand up and speak out against it.

In my own defense, I tried in the thread to change the character's name to an acronym that would have been so anonymous that it could fit anyone. I even posted that intention in the thread, yet in very next post her Psuedonym, (which it has been very clearly stated by posts in that thread and in the continuity thread applies to her and no one else) reappears.

I love posting here on legion World. I enjoy the stories and the interaction with people whom I would otherwise never have the opportunity to meet and get to know. I consider you and many other people here to be my friends.

But sometimes a stand must be taken. I stand by what I said. Until I see that the changes necessary to correct this situation have been made I choose not to participate.

Chuck

P.S. I spoke with Vee yesterday about the Mrs. Grundy Thread and I came away with the impression that he had a very definite idea that he was going to use. So I am waiting for his next post before continuing on that story.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Chuck, I've ended that portion of the story on the Ongoing Tag Thread, and started the possibility of another one (although where it goes is anyone's guess, thats what the Ongoing thread is there for). The whole Carrina thing is over and done with as far as I'm concerned now. Although Abin Quanck is still Green Lantern of Legion World [Smile] .

All of my previous posts have been edited to get rid of Carrina's name, and I think that's good for now, but I could go back and place a new name totally if necessary. But that storyline is over, I'm ready for the next whacky one. I'm getting pretty fond of Petty Officer Marvin of the Brood, and hope for him to be the LMBP's next shining star.

Hope to see you start posting on the thread again! I'd rather just forget the whole Carrina thing and have fun with the thread [Smile] !

Well, I deleted my posts, which is just the quickest fix for my own entries, but I don't believe I have the authority to remove the others.

I see Greybird added a warning to page 1 re: content of the tag-team thread, but perhaps it should be put at the start of each page for new people who may just hop in at the latest page to start reading. I certainly don't read long threads right from the start.

Chuck, I really don't believe most of us participating here considered this some personal vendetta for an old flame war. If this is what it was/is, that information should have been communicated to all those contributing to the thread. Not everybody knew the history, not everybody read the LMB Continuity thread. It may have been evident to you, but I sincerely question whether it was to others. This is no excuse not to remediate the situation now that it is in the open - but it may explain why the story continued past the point of good behaviour.

I didn't understand it really until someone explained it to me the other night too.

It's a bit creepy imo that someone put this character into the plot for their own purposes and could allow other posters - in all innocence- to add to this ongoing personal battle. yichh!

Chuck, I just PMed you, I didn't realize everyone was still posting here.

Guys, I'm glad that we talked about this issue before it became a big deal. I just went back and edited all of my posts, but now I'm thinking that maybe I should just delete them.

Oh, and it was never anything personnal against Carrina Winters, at least for me. I never had the chance to actually talk to her, I just read some of the posts she made during that period as a lurker. I don't think anyone has any hard feelings for her, it was all done toungue in cheek, although I guess it became pretty inappropriate.

My thanks to Chuck (and Greybird) for bringing this to my attention before months went by and I realized how bad these posts were.

They don't need deleting wholesale Cobie, just edit them accordingly.

There is some absolute moments of genius that shouldn't be withdrawn, just use common sense sweetheart.

we'll be back on track before you know it! [Big Grin]

Nancy,

I don't know that it was a personal vendetta. But, when you read the original post, and the stuff in the continuity thread, it definitely comes across that way.

As I told Des, in the PM he mentioned, the only person I hold at fault here is myself. I read that section of the continuity thread before the original post bringing her into this storyline went up. I should have taken these stands then. Everything would have been much easier to resolve. Instead I tried to guide the story away from that area, which was the absolute wrong thing to do. An old fogie like me who has made similar mistakes in the past should have known better.

Chuck

After talking to various people about this, I can only say now that the next thing to do is fix the problem and then move past it. I'm taking steps to get the whole thing cleared up, and then I look forward to reading everyone's posts in the future [Smile] .

I guess I can say one more thing actually, that I'm very proud to be a part of this board right now, seeing as everyonoe here has been polite, understanding and more than willing to make sure everyone is comfortable. Thank you everyone [Smile] .

Guys, just for an update:

I've talked to Lardlad about the whole thing, and he's agrees with what we all think. However, since he hasn't been able to sign on and has continuing problems with his computer connecting to this website (see the thread in the Mission Monitor Board section), he can't actually change his posts. I've emailed Greybird about this, letting him know that Lard Lad has given him the OK to go into the thread and take out any mention of Carrina's Winters name and delete or change it (I've given him the details).

This is a nice relief, so hopefully once Grey reads the PM I sent him and gets a moment of free time, he can fix the thread up and we can leave the whole thing behind us.

Thanks Lardy for understanding, and thank you to all of you (especially Chuck) for being so understanding. I appreciate where everyone was coming from on this, and I'm glad we were able to come together quickly and iron out any possible problems with the threads. Thanks guys [Smile] .

I just read these last few posts, and I'm really glad that the problem was fixed, although I didn't even know we had a problem... It sure is difficult, what with the large number of people posting here. At least it was solved peacefully, though... I hope I didn't unknowingly aggravate the problem in any way. And I want to thank everyone for making my transition as a new member fun and easy. That's why I joined this board in the first place, because of all the nice people here. I'm glad that everyone is keeping it that way. Long live the Legion, and Long Live Legion World! [Lightning Lad]

Historically, LMBP story threads have tended to push the boundaries of good taste [Smile] Many of our most enthusiastic writers have a liberal sense of humor. I think, however, that when writing these stories, it is a good idea to keep in mind just who you are writing about.

For instance, as everyone knows, Crujectra is my character. I created her, and I have spent a long time developing her into who she is today. As such, I'm a little possessive of her "character". I have no problem with her being involved in the story threads, so long as she is written as much "in character" as is possible. For instance, if she had been the one using sex to steal powers, I would have been horrified.

Other posters would probably not care as much about how they were used, to an extent. Cobalt, for instance, is a big fan of these stories, and would probably not be as concerned about what might happen to his "character", within reason.

The point is, when you are writing about people other than yourself, consider how much impact your story ideas might have on the people you are writing about. Do you think they will find it funny, or do you think they might be upset? Or if you are introducing someone into the storyline that newer posters might not know much (or anything) about, maybe you could add a short post to explain who they are and how they might be handled.

The LMBP has a confusing history, with many alternate IDs and fictional characters, as well as a number of real people who at one time or another called themselves LMBPers. Knowing who's real and who isn't can be hard to figure out. But if you are planning to be graphic or potentially offensive in the story using a character you are unfamiliar with, it might not be a bad idea to ask for more information from some of the "old timers", just to be on the safe side. I think it's better to be sure than to risk hurting someone's feelings by accident.

Of course, these are just my opinions, and may not reflect the opinions of anyone else [Wink]

Well put Cru! Like you said, I've always used Crujectra in only the best light, because I'd feel bad doing otherwise. Others posters are free to have all kinds of wacky things happen to Cobalt, as long as they promise that I can do the same to their characters too [Smile] .

In the future, we could all try to give a description of a new character that's introduced if it's someone else. I know sometimes I suddenly include obscure posters of the past and then offer no explanation for them because I post in the heat of the moment [Wink] . I'll try to be a bit more informative next time, that's one of the great things about this edit feature that we all have!

I just wanted to let everyone know that the changes have been made in the Ongoing Tag Thread. Thanks for everyone in helping to make this an easily solved problem, and thanks for your patience.

Grey, thanks for fixing it for me:). Lardy would have done it, but like I said, he can't sign on for some reason.

Chuck, I appreciate everything you've said and am just happy that I can look forward to reading some more posts by both Space Ranger and Abin Quanck, Green Lantern [Wink]
