Legion of the Damned was finally going to be reprinted in one edition in English and released this week! The long wait was finally over. Then the book is recalled by DC on release day! Unbelievable! What a disappointment! Please, DC, have someone verify the chapter sequence before the book is printed next month!

or at the very least before it's shipped!
I've got one. yeah, it was pathetic how they didn't bother to put the stories in order. actually it was pretty funny since it was almost in the worst order possible! haha
somebody's lazy at DC.

You've got a collector's item!!
Posted by cleome on :
Post it in the Non Sequitor thread, PB!
Posted by Power Boy on :
haha!
I think the order is supposed to be: 1. Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 4) #122 2. Legionnaires #79 3. Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 4) #123 4. Legionnaires #80
what we got was a hilarious:
2. Legionnaires #79 Damned if we do 4. Legionnaires #80 Damned for all eternity 1. Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 4) #122 Legion of the Damned 3. Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 4) #123 Damned if we don't
which for some reason was the cover of the whole package.
no other covers were included .. even as dividers.
we did get a random ad for 'flashpoint'. and a preview at the end for batman arkham city.
it was a 100 page spectacular! let me tell you.

Maybe if they had reprinted the covers they would have noticed those little "L" numbers that would have given them a clue as to the correct order.

ok just brought mine yesterday, never got a chance to read it because it got busy at work. the guy at the comic book shop i go to didn't even mention it too me, oh well thanks Power Boy for listing the order that stories are in this mess of a one shot.

Anyone got a scan of the cover? Apparently, they're going to change the logo for the fixed version, and I'm just curious...

Well, that's good to know. If I didn't hear about Batman every 4.2 seconds, I'd doubtless forget that he'd ever existed.

The covers were not reprinted? Really? Why would DC not include the covers?

Wonderful. DC does not reprint the covers but includes a Batman preview!

That is the cover I got.

Does anyone else find those previews annoying?
Posted by cleome on :
Yeah, googoomuck. It makes the self-congratulation from DC about how they're "holding the line" against price hikes that much more annoying. Comics content is slim enough for the dollar(s) as it is, and now I have to look at (usually hideous, totally uninteresting) previews-- and pay for them. (Damn. That utter eyesore of a Green Arrow preview from a couple of months back. Thinking about it still gives me a headache.) Sometimes it's the same preview in multiple issues, too.
And Batman needs more commercial buzz like the damn Pentagon needs a bigger budget, so there's that annoyance, too.
I'd rather have the ads for bogus "X-Ray Glasses" and Hostess snack cakes back, personally.

I'm a sucker every time, I'm always annoyed the issue is about 6 less pages than I thought when I picked it up.
Not to mention all the artists that do splash page after splash page instead of dialogue filled panels.
Posted by AndrewNolan on :
Power Boy (or anyone else who has a copy), Would you mind listing what was included in the issue? From what was posted so far there are 1. 88 interior pages 2. One page for a cover 3. One page for a Flashpoint ad and 4. One page for a Batman Arkham City preview That is a total of 91 pages. What were the remaining 9 pages? I have waited a long time for this and the curiosity is getting to me! Any additional information would be most appreciated! Thanks!
Posted by Power Boy on :
You only going to be disappointed.
1 page cover 1 page interior cover ad for geek chic daily.com 22 pages (#2. in the story) Legionnaires #79 Damned if we do 22 pages (4.) Legionnaires #80 Damned for all eternity 1 page Flashpoint ad (comes after page 19 of #80) 22 pages (1.) Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 4) #122 Legion of the Damned 22 pages (3.) Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 4) #123 Damned if we don't
1 page Ad for a Batman Arkham city and companion video game 5 pages of sneak preview Batman Arkham City 1 page DC Nation 1 page ad for iFanboy interior rear cover 1 page ad for Doctor Who exterior rear cover
100.
make sense?
Posted by AndrewNolan on :
Thanks for the information, Power Boy, that was most appreciated.
Oh my! This is what was included rather than the original covers? That is disappointing.
I think Michael over at The Legion Omnicom summarized this quite well.
That Damned Reprint.

When I re-read the oldies, I always get a smile from those Hostess ads.

Does the issue list an editor? I don't mean the original story editor, Mike McAvennie, but for this issue... someone to hold responsible and ridicule for this awesome blunder?
Posted by Power Boy on :
absolutely not ... there's no room!

The saga of this reprint continues for me! Being such a huge fan of the DNA Legion, especially LOD, I wanted to get a copy of this as soon as possible. On April 21st, I was one of the lucky winners of this trade on eBay. I immediately paid for the auction and had peace of mind that I secured my copy. The next day I receive this message from the seller.
Hi. If you purchased this with the intent of getting one of the recalled issues we will not be able to fill your order. Most of our issues were damaged in the storm. Replacements are being shipped on May 11 but they will be the corrected issues. I apologize and have issued a refund.
The seller also sent a request to cancel the transaction on eBay (which I didn’t even know existed). I promptly declined the offer to cancel the transaction and paid for the auction a second time. Shortly thereafter I receive the following message from the seller;
Hi. I see you rejected my request to cancel this transaction. I can't fill your order. All but 1 of the few issues of the recalled version were ruined when the storm took out the front window of our store. I can send you one of the books when DC re-issues them on May 11. I am open to suggestions. I apologize but there is nothing I can do.
I am not convinced his story is true but the reality is that I will not be receiving a book from him.
Now for the good news. I then called a very good friend in Florida who called his comic store to see if they had a copy. They indicated that the store had one and their second store may have a copy as well. He immediately reserved both copies for me!
All is well that ends well and I can’t wait for this to end!

I got an email from my mail-order company DCBS:

--so I'll get it one shipment later.
Stinks to hear they cut covers to run promo crap, but it's a "comic", not a TPB (like I feel it deserved. )

Quite honestly, Pov, I didn't realize this was a comic until your post. I agree -- this should have been a TPB.

That really sucks that there are only 91 pages in a supposed 100-page one-shot/reprint. Especially in light of the fact that they appear to have excised part of the story (Live Wire's journey to the Stem after being shot with tangleweed).
*** SPOILER!!! ***
As I recall, he was merely pulled underground into some sort of transport sap artery and conveyed into the Stem itself. Unfortunately, I can't recall what happened once he got there, and don't have the original issue here with me in Ottawa to check.

So are they planning on reprinting Widening Rifts as well? Seems silly not to, as it bridges the gap between Damned and Lost.

I don't have a copy of the reprint just yet but I believe all the LOD interiors were reprinted. Power Boy listed 22 pages per issue and that is what was contained in the original issues.
I believe you are referring to the opening sequence in Legion of Super-Heroes #124 Widening Rifts-Part 1. The opening splash page features Garth face down in the root network of the stem. Page 2 and page 3 has Garth roaming in the stem but page 4 reveals that Garth is just dreaming (reliving the nightmare).

Good question Hermit. Since the LOD reprint is now due May 11th and the Legion Lost trade in mid-June, I doubt it.
My preference would have been for DC to make the LOD a trade and include Legionnaires #78 (Prelude to LOD) and the three-issue Widening Rifts storyline (LSH #124, L*81 and LSH #125).
Of course, a boatload of extras in both would have been nice as well!

That would also have made more sense. Legionnaires 78 shows why Cos, Monstress, Brainy and Tinya missed the invasion. Widening Rifts sets up Legion Lost. These 4 issues would fill in a lot of gaps for first-time readers. I'm sure most of them would appreciate Lost more if they could see firsthand what the team went through before getting lost!

Maybe because it was purely a crass business decision designed for no other reason than to cash in on Coipel's current popularity? Or am I just being cynical?

For some reason (maybe because of the recall) this didn't get added to the GCD. But since it did get out to real customers, it needs to be added.
What's the exact title of this comic in the indicia (the small print on the DC Nation page)? Since the cover title doesn't match the solicitation, I need to know what it's called in the indicia.

Posted by the Hermit on :
...as being shipped this week.

it was, the replacement with the proper order, still no covers included. i got mine for 3 bucks on sale.
the flashpoint add was moved to page 4 but otherwise the ads are identical.
Posted by Power Boy on :
and it makes SO much more sense. go figure!
Posted by Jerry on :
Three bucks? Good for you. That's about as close to holding the line at $2.99 as you can get. I wish my shop ran specials like that.
Posted by Power Boy on :
my shop is insane. im worried about them. they had a 1 dollar back issue deal today, i got many duplicates of uncanny x-men and justice league (giffen and demaites era) from my childhood. as mine are all very very worn. they didn't have much legion left.
i hope they're doing ok.

Got it. Read it. Loved it all over again. Cham, XS and Saturn Girl really shine in this story.
Posted by Power Boy on :
You loved it ... all over?
haha, I agree about the characters, i hadn't read a single Archie Legion issue before this, and became fans of XS, Live Wire, Mon, Saturn Girl, Monstress, Cham, etc.

Saw this yesterday. Maybe I'll pick it up later. Coipel's scratchy style reminds me a little of Steve Leialoha, who I loved to pieces back in the day.

I am really glad DC reprinted LOD as this is one of my all-time favorite Legion stories. This edition not being a trade is a bit of a disappointment but I am happy that we have a 100-page Legion spectacular!

I really liked Coipel's dark scratchy style back then too. It had a lot of energy and gesture.
his style became polished very quickly. which is good, i like his stuff now too.

Me too, This four issue series, which was heavily promoted brought me back to the legion after an Archie boycott. I guess DC dosn't think it has the same gravity that I do.
Well, It did end the volume, start LegionWorld and return with a new volume the Legion.
now i'm thinking of all the early character designs by Olivier that could've been included in a TPB!! argh

Power Boy--what an inspiration! Perhaps we can make this string of messages the e-trade Legion of the Damned? I would need about a week or so to pull some scans together but the scans would include concept “pencil only” LOD drawings by Olivier Coipel of Karate Kid, Umbra, Ultra Boy, Cham, Live Wire, Apparition, Shvaughn, XS and the Blight. IIRC, seeing XS in her tattered outfit is heartbreaking. The image is poignant and, despite the tattered outfit, XS is absolutely adorable. If this is of interest here, please let me know and I will try to scan these images by next week. In the interim, perhaps someone can post the images of the covers and post them here because that is certainly something DC could have included but didn’t.
