Its been a while since the original version of the Legion had a new female member that wasn't a returning one. NG has earned her stripes, as per the Johns penned story.

Time to see her join, maybe develop a thing for some other legionnaire besides Rokk-em Sockem Girl Bashin' Krinn.

Okay, admit it, that was ... krin-g worthy.

I agree with you bud, it would be great to see Night Girl be a regular participant in the monthly book.
Does that mean that I think it's going to happen? Uh-uh. Paul Levitz just doesn't love her the way you and I do. [Love]

I disagree. She still can't operate in daylight, which disqualifies her. Would like to see her as a supporting character, but I hate her new costume.

They've never really done a great job of explaining how that weakness works. She can use her powers during the day, if she's underground, or Shady has her in darkness, or if she's in a place where the sun don't shine, so how exactly does this work? It's not UV, which goes right through walls. It's not visible light, since she's been seen using her powers in the Subs HQ, with artificial lighting active.

Is it the presence of sunlight? Does it have to touch her skin? Could she wear a full body stocking? Could Brainy whip up some special sunscreen (or a variant of the red sun / anti-lead serum Mon-El uses?)? Or just a weak force field that blocks sunlight?

If something as simple as a weak solar-energy blocking field built into her costume could allow her to function in direct sunlight, she'd be even less of a liability than Wildfire, who not only loses his powers if his costume is breached, but has a chance of blowing up with the force of 10,000 nuclear bombs...

I mean, if Nura can make the cut, when her power originally required her to *be unconscious* to use it, then only being able to use it in the dark should be an easy lock!

I just want to see her with full Kryptonian-class powers at night.

I don't care if she's on the regular team or not.

Posted by ActorLad on :

I'd rather she have more unique powers then the usual Kryptonian as the team already has enough members who have or can approximate them. Perhaps something fear-based. Yes I know Rainbow Girl should have them with her current tie to the Emotional Spectrum/Lantern Corps but I think Lydda would be more useful with them since she wouldn't have the mood swings that go with Dori's. Plus let's be honest Lydda is more likely to ever be used again then Dori anyway.

I'm happy with Lydda just being strong rather than having an assortment of other powers to boot; the Legion doesn't really have a strongwoman with Supergirl and Laurel Gand no longer really associated with them. And given that their strongest other member (Mon-El) would be dead in any normal planet's atmosphere without the anti-lead serum that keeps him functioning, it seems a bit hypocritical to refuse Lydda membership given her tenure as an associate of the team.

I would heaps rather see her than Yera on the active roster if we had to keep an active roster of 25. If there's no cap on the roster, I think most of the original Subs should have earned a spot on the team by now actually. They've all got a lot more experience under their belt than Jacques or Quislet for example...

I think that all thats required there is a mental shift in view. Lets face it, even though Kathoom (is that right, been a long time since i read where she came from) is a "dark" planet, starlight from the universe shines all around. Even in black holes, even though light cannot escape its gravity. So really, I'd say its more of a mental block that needs to be overcome. A bit of mental cheating that gets the job done, but can still lead to situations where things get hairy for her when she loses focus, or doesn't really believe she has the powers.

This could easily be proven by having PP make her believe its dark and she uses her powers, only to have it proven that it was all in her mind.

I think that would make a great character progression story done over six or seven issues.

I think the number one charm about this character is the fact that she does has this limitation to her power. This makes her hugely more interesting than someone like Supergirl who's just a powerhouse and that's that. Bring it on ... who cares!
Lydda has to rely on her cunning and experience when she's walking around in daylight.
This makes her no less useful than someone like Dream Girl who, without her Karate Kid-trained ju-jitsu or whatever, is still only a selective, occasional power user.

I'm surprised after all these years, with Brainy's help, she hasn't come up with some sort of invention that covers her with artificial darkness during daylight hours (spray? black mist? shadow caster??). This wouldn't break the natural power rule since she has that already. It would just be an add-on to her power, an accessory, not unlike Brainiac 5's belt. Think back on how useful she is when teamed up with Shady.

For me, the limitation of her powers makes her all that more believable and I am very happy that's she's a full member these days. If only Levitz could see her true potential now and use her more. [Smile]

I agree that Night Girl is more interesting with her limitation.

I believe it was in Adv. 331 that Night Girl produced a "shadow bomb" to activate her strength in daylight while facing the LSV. Saturn Queen defeated her by hypnotizing her into thinking a bright light had dispelled the shadow bomb's effects, nullifying her power, which is the reverse of Rickshaw's idea about NG and PP.

It was one of the worst Legion stories ever, but it's too bad that idea was never followed up on in later stories.

Also in that story, Stone Boy displayed the ability to only turn specific parts of his body into stone, allowing him to move the rest of his body while using his power. Unfortunately, this ability was never seen again either.

FYI: Levitz says she'll show up at the Legion Academy as an instructor.

True. Same with the Academy recruits. Time has progressed for the Legionnaires, but Power Boy, Lamprey and Nightwind remain perpetual students, and Comet Queen has been demoted from almost-a-Legionnaire to back in the 'new class'...

(This is your brain on comet gas, children! Say no to Prop 194323, to legalize huffing comet gas!)

On the other hand, maybe it would be for the best if the ex-Subs and Academy recruits, etc. formed a new 31st century team, instead of being slowly added to an already overful Legion (so crowded that Paul is coming up with excuses to get established characters like Blok and Mysa, Garth and Imra, Mon-El, Star Boy, etc. off-screen).

I don't know if thats what Paul is doing. Yes, its a large cast, but Paul has always been adept at cycling through characters and giving each of them a moment to shine and then moving into the background for a while until it was time for them again.

ah..nice reminiscience of LSH Annual where Cos and Night Girl decided to join BB and Duo Damsel in Legion of Subsitute Heroes. So Night Girl is working alongside Cos as instructors at Legion Academy. nice. i like it.

He also said that he believed that during the johns run she was with the Subs!

Come-on Paul Levitz, update yourself on what's been happening. Lydda was a Legionnaire all through the Johns and Robinson/Gates runs.

I agree. I liked seeing her as a regular member. I am not a fan of the Academy and of sticking Legion members there as instructers.

Posted by future king on :

Hey, as long as the odd "save the universe cuz the regular Legion's busy with other stuff" adventure happens form time to time then who cares? At least we get to see our rare favs! [Smile]

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

Just think its time for some powerful new female blood in the gang. Star level power. The girls are great for stealth and sly missions, but not to much calls for phantom ladies to save the universe by being able to slip through walls. Granted, Im mindful of PG doing just that at one point back in the early two hundreds, but thats one adventure in how many now?

I've always thought that an interesting upgrade for Night Girl would be for her to use total darkness as a means of "recharging" her strength. She could retain her super strength in light as long as she spent 12 hours a day in total darkness.

I like, Jerry!

For femme powerhouses, I'd vote for bringing back Celeste!

did someone corrected him that one?

and where do you get those info from?

Don't know, but I've seen it posted by others as well. I'd love to see her join the team though in Paul's legion. She always seemed the classy type to me. Maybe it was because she's the only person/character I've ever seen that actually could rock a beehive. I could even see her with a bit of Elvira, without the campy/goofy. Being from a dark planet, she would inherently be more comfortable in the "spookier" storylines. Legion has another sewer adventure, its all dark, monster steps outta the shadows, everyone is set to fight/freak and she's going "Oh, Hey Bob. How's the wife and kids?" Kinda like Marilyn from the Munsters. Its just normal to her.

Hey, don't forget Marge Simpson! You can't top a blue beehive!

Posted by rickshaw1 on :

Well, Marge is sexy, but the overall look of NG is just better. Sides, after Homer, who else is gonna measure up?

[Wink]

You guys bring up a great point (in your own goofy ways of course [Smile] )

Lydda would need a complete make-over when(not "if") she does return, IMO.
Lose the hair and revamp the costume ... something contemporary and sexy for both.
A power boost of some sort would be in order as well. Nothing so drastic as with Luornu, but perhaps a new costume with built in blackness-casting properties?

C'mon Paul ... don't let us Night Girl fans down!

In the words of Marcia Brady - *SLAP* Cut my hair??

I love Lydda's beehive!! I love that in the 31st century, a chick can rock a beehive, it totally suits her, and it gives her a look which is different to pretty much any other superheroine I can think of.

I really like the Marilyn Munster idea too...it would be cool if stuff like vampires and werewolves came up every now and then and she just rolled up her sleeves and took to it without being at all freaked out. [Smile]

On a tangent, I had a dream last night about being able to phase thru walls, and it got me to thinking about Phantom Girl. I find her rather boring. I'd like to see her abilities expanded to include being able to communicate with ghosts, as she did in Adv. 340. I could see her taking on a more supernatural persona and have a series of ghostly tales with her in the spotlight. Sort of like when Lilith joined the original Teen Titans and they kinda went on a "Tales of Suspense" tangent for a while. PG's also been shown as being able to enter and leave the Phantom Zone under her own power. Would like to see more done with that too, now that we have the PZ back again.
