I am not thrilled with the list of active Legionnaires listed as eligible for Leader. I would include Duplicate Damsel, Matter Eater Lad, Saturn Girl, Lightning Lad and Bouncing Boy. I would lose Quislet, Invisible Kid and Yera.I am also not a big fan of Tellus and Dawnstar.

I enjoy seeing what a talented writer can do with heroes whose powers are not obviously spectacular. There has to be an assumption that someone like Bouncing Boy was chosen to be in the Legion in the first place for a reason --his superpower superficially qualified him, but it was his character, drive and grit that allowed him in. Heroes with less obviously impressive powers working together is what makes the Legion great.

What's wrong with Quislet?

Odd that Cosmic Boy is eligible since he's stepping down...

Well, Cos is still an active member, so he is eligible. It may throw a wrench in his personal plans if he wins, but it would play out interestingly.

Current active Legion Membership can be found at www.legionelection.com

I like Quislet as a character, but not as a Legionnaire. His original run seemed more like a gimmick, but he was always amusing. I could see him being involved in the Legion as an ally. With a finite membership roster, I prefer the characters I mentioned.

Well I voted for Sensor Girl but honestly if Luornu was in the running I would definately have voted for her, power augmented or not she deserves it the most. She's the 4th member to help "create" the Legion, constitution as well as group definition and parameters. Also, depending on which version of the Legion you lean towards, she was R.J. Brand's assistant/second in command-ish, not to mention all those years of experience.
I have always looked at her as the 4th founder. Shame she never became as highly regarded and utilized as the big 3.

I think that something that we should be keeping in mind about this incarnation of Legionnaires' personalities and abilities is how they evolved during the now expunged 5-Year Gap era.

Indeed, let us not forget that Invisible Kid 2 has the makings of an Earth-Gov President, for example, and therefore would be predisposed to be an effective Legion leader. For another, on a lesser scale Colossal Boy has the leadership capacity within him to become a senior officer in the Science Police, which would likely also put him in good stead as a Legion leader. More negatively, on the other hand, Sun Boy has psychologivcal issues that could cause him to come undone, perhaps, if subjected to the stresses and rogours of the honour of leadership which he may not feel he truly deserves.

Just a few things to consider, anyway.

Futrue King, I totally agree with you about Duplicate Damsel. I always regretted she was shoved off with Bouncing Boy to fulfill that old "Adult Legion" story line. Cockrum made her visually exciting and the character is rich in untapped story lines. I would love to see he become an active member and interact with the other members on real missions.

Mediocre Boy, I agree with you about Gim, but not Invisible Kid. In the past, he seemed to passive to lead. Maybe he has changed.

Obviously this thread started prior to a lot of people getting to read #6, which I think provides a perfectly reasonable explanation for SG and LL's absence.

Tough to rationalize why Dup Damsel wouldn't be there, or Chuck for that matter, given that Gim and Yera are on there. (In fact, with Chuck as recent leader on the cartoon, he would have made an interesting front-runner!) They haven't been shown to have kids yet, have they?

MELad, could still be in politics for all we know.

As I said elsewhere, I'm voting for Element Lad to (re) increase his visibility, and I think that's a perfectly good reason for anyone to vote for their erstwhile neglected favorite.

P.S. to Quislet, Esq.: be sure to touch the puppet head. [Smile]

Brody27,

I don't think Lu was shipped off to fulfill the Adult Legion timeline so much as she was a victim of "The Purge."

When the Legion returned to regular feature status after a few years in limbo during the early '70s, there was a drive to lose all of the silly or inexplicable powers.

In VERY short order we had:
A makeover for Timber Wolf (S/LSH 197)
Lu and Chuck married and kicked off the team (S/LSH 200)
Invisible Kid killed (S/LSH 203)
Tenzil resigned (S/LSH 212)
Tyroc joins & never seen again (S/LSH 218)
Chemical King killed (S/LSH 228)

Interesting, Portfolio Boy. I had never thought of it like that before, but I think you are correct. S/LSH 197 was my very first Legion Comic, so I plunged in as all that was going on. I remember being completely dazzled by Dave Cockrum's art and the costumes he designed. I was underwhelmed by Cary Bates writing and his dismissal of members with what he considered weaker powers.

I wouldn't call Cary Bates' writing underwhelming per se, but the guy definately took his time telling character-driven stories (I say that now when I go back and read some of them).
I'm not sure if he truly was the power behind the decisions to diminish some of the "weaker" powered members?
