Well. I see the book is well named. What's it actually about?

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

This is just the back up story involving Dr. 13. The main story features the new Spectre.

Dr. 13 is all about proving that every crazy thing that happens has a rational, scientific explanation (think Scooby Do - although he may have been around longer).

He and his daughter are on some kind of road trip and it just keeps getter weirder and more complex with each issue. As you can see above.

[EDIT: Reading the series now...Dr. 13 and his daughter Traci go investigating some strange (and unpleasant) incidents involved with a plane crash in the French Alps.]

Whoa... talking gorillas wearing Nazi uniforms and Infectious Lass???

Why hasn't Lash gotten this book yet?

Posted by Fat Cramer on :

The real thing - and looking perfectly pukey in her pulchritude! She doesn't seem surprised to be there herself - so maybe she's been kicking around the 21st century for a while.

Wheee! I don't know what's going on in that story, but I'm SO pleased to see Drura, I don't care! Heh!

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

The Dr. 13 story has been the highlight of this series so far--I'm thrilled Drura will be here! Anyone looking for I,Vampyre, Anthro and others (I know there must be one of you out there) will also enjoy this! [Big Grin]

Posted by Kid Prime on :

Hmm. First Thom (and possibly Dawny) in JSA, now Drura in this title. Seems like the 21st century sure is chock full of original Legion appearances these days. Hmm.

Once again, I say hmm.

Posted by MLLASH on :

OH MY GAWD!!!!!!!!!!!! Talk about unexpected!!! I must e-mail my CBS!!!!

Posted by MLLASH on :

And she looks positively ravishing! Apparently I am going to have to collect this entire miniseries now! Seems fun!

She's so cute & sassy! How can I not check this out?

I'm kicking myself for being so busy not to mention this earlier. I remember seeing the below scenes and wanting to post them here months ago, but I've been so busy I forgot.

Drura has been appearing in cameos previous to this issue.

The story so far...TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED #1 -

Kong the Untamed Anthro (he's blond, so I doubt he's Anthro - I'm wrong about this) speaks French and writes the following message on a cave wall - "Prenez Garde Aux Architectes."

Dr. 13 dreams of a wasteland of clocks in which he finds the dying ghost of Captain Fear. The scene switches to a jungle island with a boy dressed up as a super-hero [Genius Jones] reading a book and then burning it in the nearby fire. He asks Dr. 13 for dime only to have the Doctor awake to his daughter wearing a negligee. He finally awakens.

Traci wakes him up to speak to the Premier of France whom the Doctor went to college with. As "Le Septic," he's asked to investigate a plane crash in the Alps. Traci and the Doctor fly a helicopter to the location and discuss the fact that survivors would disappear and then be found headless, skinned, gutted, and bled dry.

They are both seemingly attacked by a Yeti, who is in reality I...Vampire - Lord Andrew Bennett.

TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED #2 -

The space shuttle is repairing the old JLA satellite and we see that the earth is really flat like a dime. Then Captain Fear dies in Dr. 13's arms...

 -

...Dr. 13 awakens in a cave with his daughter and I...Vampire. They argue whether he was knocked out or fainted. They discover Kong's Anthro's message. Traci leaves the cave long enough to be kidnapped. Dr. 13 is knocked out by a Nazi ape's fist. Unconscious...dreaming, he meets the kid [Genius Jones] again and gives him a dime to discover that reality is being rebuilt without him. Dr. 13 thinks he's God and wakes up. He asks Andrew for help, but he can't leave the cave because of the Sun. Dr. 13 tries to erase the "Yeti" tracks that may have taken his daughter in disbelief, only to discover Kong Anthro frozen in ice. Behind Dr. 13 is a flying pirate ship.

TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED #3 -

Even though he's on a flying pirate ship with a frozen Cro-Magnon boy and a vampire...looking for his daughter who was kidnapped by Yeti, Dr. 13 doesn't believe any of this. 13 convinced Captain Fear that they are searching for gold so that the pirates will help them and not kill him. They fly to a jungle nestled in the Alps which has a Nazi camp full of apes...

 -

...The pirate ghosts and the Nazi apes battle each other. The pirates are unkillable but they can hurt/kill the apes. After Dr. 13 falls out of the ship and near his daughter, the boy [Genius Jones] appears in a hut. J.E.B. Stuart of the Haunted Tank appears and his horse defecates in Dr. 13's face.

TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED #4 -

The Haunted Tank joins the battle and the Doctor frees his daughter who at J.E.B.'s behest flee the scene only to be attacked by the main ape. Kong Anthro saves them and Traci falls in love. They run into the hut to find the boy [Genius Jones], but the boy refuses a dollar in favor of a dime. The main ape arrives to explain he and his apes are the product of the Nazi's super soldier program. The ape wants to use Traci to create a new Master Race when he pukes due to Infectious Lass. The entire cast (minus J.E.B. are in the hut when the "Architects" appear to give the boy some dimes. But, before that happens the Haunted Tank blows up the hut. Captain Fear is upset that there's no gold.

I e-mailed my CBS today about pulling any copies of TotU 1-4 they might still have on the shelf, but if they can't get # 4 I might have to seek out help from a fellow Legion Worlder!

Getting the rest of the mini will be no problem now that I've notified them.

Question: WHAT is Dru doing there?!? This is all just so... unexpected.

Posted by matlock on :

That's just... astonishing. The whole thing. I'm amazed. The Nazi Gorillas, the kid with the goggles... all that wierd obscure stuff makes Infectious Lass seem downright mainstream.

Posted by Fat Cramer on :

Thanks, Gary! This series looks wonderfully weird!

The whole thing is clearly a surreal adventure. Maybe it takes place inside the Silver Twist! (remember that? Ah, Denny's drinking days...)

I laughed out loud when I saw IL. This story has been so much fun that it's kept me buying the book. The Spectre lead story has been so lackluster that if it was running by itself I'd have dropped it by now.

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

...so if I read this right, she's in 2 and 3, but not 1... and not named til 4 (which I have). I'll skip #1, then.

how long does this mini run?

Posted by Outdoor Miner on :

8 issues.

It's $3.99 a pop, but there's a larger page count.

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

Ok, I'm embarrassed to admit this as a die-hard Golden Age fanatic, but I totally didn't recognize who the kid wanting dimes was until last night!

He's Genius Jones! [Embarrassed]

Look for more info on him here.

I wonder if DC is aware of this?

I think you have the right idea, Pov. Too expensive for a series I'm only following the back-up story for.

What are you going to do if the trade doesn't include the backup?

Yep.

They can argue all they want about how you're actually getting more pages of story for the money - the price tag's a dealbreaker for a lot of people.

Hey LASH,

Were you able to get your hands on #4? I know my CBS still had a stack when I was there last week. Let me know if you need it! [Smile]

Posted by MLLASH on :

Thanks, Omni-- but I'm back just now from the CBS with issues 1, 3 & 4! They will pull 5 & 6 for me, and I'll be on the lookout for issue 2!

Preview of the next issue is up at Newsarama.

And now we get an idea of what's going on.

Amazon Attack!, JSA #3, Infectious Lass...all on the same previews page!! NICE!!! can't wait.

I had a feeling that's who the architects were. "Arbitrary and capricious" lol.

Just one question though I thought that one of the characters appeared in a regular DC title. So obviously they are 'real' and they are in this weirdness.

Which character? Traci 13 or "Girl 13" had appeared in the Superman books pre-Infinite Crisis, but this seems to be a very different version of her. I'm not sure any of these characters are currently in continuity.

Posted by Joe-Boy Harvestar on :

Its definately Traci 13 - Daughter of Doctor 13.
I dont like the new look personally...but still...yay for tales of the unexpected!

My throat kinda hurts, I think Infectious Lass is near [Frown]

Note: For those of you waiting for the trade, it's been announced that the back-story will be published as a separate trade from the main story.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Suffering Sasquatch!

They're doing this, no doubt, to gauge interest in an INFECTIOUS LASS solo series!

So all you trade-waiters... purchase ONLY the Dr. 13 trade!!!

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

I wonder if they might be setting up these guys as a new Forgotten Heroes?

Posted by Blacula on :

That would be *great* if so! I loved the old Forgotten Heroes team!

And it's weird to think that nearly every character who was on that team is now (or has fairly recently been) a majorly featured player in the DCU even though they were all completely obscure, long-unseen characters 25 years ago when the team first formed - Animal Man, Rip Hunter, Rick Flag, Dolphin, Cave Carson, Immortal Man and Dane Dorrance of the Sea Devils all had their profiles lifted after being on that team. Some even got their own series out of it!

I wonder if the same will happen with Infectious Lass and the rest on this team?

Posted by Mystery Lad on :

For some reason, I thought #6 was the last issue, despite that plainly visible 'of 8' on the cover. I'm sure glad it wasn't, because this installment had me scratching my head and going 'huh'? every other page.

I was *so* relieved when I finished it and glanced at the cover again. Just imagine if this had been the ending!

Not much Drura, sad to say.

"We don't love you." Uh-huh.

Posted by Outdoor Miner on :

I believe it's just been announced that they will be collecting the backups in trade form after this mini ends.

I hope so. It deserves another shot at gaining an audience.

Posted by Caliente on :

Can I just say how incredibly amused I was by the interior shot off the metro car? The MU makes a cameo! [Big Grin] I caught sight of Logan, Matt Murdock and Peter Parker... and it absolutely made the issue for me. Well, that and the bits on the boat with the Cap'n hitting on Dura. That was so very amusing.

Posted by Tamper Lad on :

for me, It had to be scene where the "Gorillah with fahzhiits leanninks" gives one of his team mates some medical help.

"Thad iz pure Gol!"

I *LOVED* that!!!

Posted by MLLASH on :

Everyone's still reading this, I trust?

Some # 7 chat follows.

Drura here is obviously pulled from pre-5-year gap; I'd wager from around her S/LSH # 218 appearance.

More and more this is looking like a setup for a new, fun EXILES-ish team.

Infectious Lass, Anthro, I Vampire ("I'm... I'm really gay!"), the Nazi (now vampire) gorilla (who IS that?), that Genius Jones kid, Dr. & Traci 13. That has to be the oddest lineup of established characters EVER.

I was really upset when the flirty foxy pirate guy got killed, that sucked! I noticed Dru donned his earrings.

Dru got in a couple of funny lines but I, Vampire looks like he'll be the unexpected comedian of the team!

"Joo god me LOB'SICK, baby!" ....*dreamy sigh followed by choking back tears of sadness*

This has been a ride! I'm gonna get the trade, though, so I don't have to deal with all these separate issues again.

Sorry!

I just realized I posted this info here and not here.

Anyway, my best guess is the Gorilla originates in WEIRD WAR TALES #89 (July 1980) -

 -

Posted by Thriftshop Debutante on :

Along with the earrings, Drura could try on the "Captain Fear" name. It's very appropriate.

Posted by MLLASH on :

Kewl, thanks Gary!

Teeds, that might get her more dates than 'Infectious Lass', per I.V's suggestion...

Primate Platoon, eh?

Okay, I guess Lash isn't un architecte after all. But...

...will that SAVE the world...or DESTROY it???

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Hmm... why do I get the feeling that Weird War Tales must've been one of the coolest comics of all time?

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

Looks like I was mistaken about Kong.

I wonder why they had Anthro be blond?

Posted by BouncingBear on :

Isn't anyone in Legionworld happy that Infectous Lass is going to be appearing on a regular basis in the new monthly "Team 13"? How come there are no comments of this last issue?????? I thought it was fun and a good read. So I ask again, where is all the excitment?

Posted by thor2168 on :

I thought the ending was a little anti-climatic. What the hell was the story all about anyway? Idid enjoy the story until the end. I just hate no resolutions, or leave me guessing. That just left me scratching my head...It was very fun overall though...

Posted by MLLASH on :

I read # 8.

I liked it.

If I had to guess at a point of the story, it would be that every character/person is worth something (the Architechs only wanted Traci 13). "...As someone who's gotten used to being ignored by <the universe> for a long time... we ALL have a PLACE in it!"

I'd love if the TEAM 13/"Quest for Fear" thing really did come out as a miniseries.

OMG! Just stumbled onto this thread. Andrew Bennet is still ali....ummm.... Undead?!? Has there been any sightings of his girl friend Debra Dancer? I have missed these 2 soooo much.

No sign of Debra that I'm aware of.

Gary, is that Archives-style "Architecture and Mortality" cover an actual cover variant for the HC that's coming out this week?

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

These scans were from the TPB (not Hard Cover) that came out yesterday.

Posted by Pov on :

Ah, my mistake. I -am- getting the TPB. Was there a hardcover?

So the faux Archive/G-S X-Men homage is included in the trade? Cool. [Cool]

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

Yup. Plus several other character sketches.
