Oy, vey! Can the Space Cat Patrol Agency be far behind? Atomic Tom, Crab-Tabby, and Power Puss, where are you?

I wonder if Krypto will sound like Scooby Doo? He looks a bit like him.

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

The SCPA have been around since the 60's. I'll dig out the issue that I have that they appeared in.

Posted by Nightcrawler on :

I have their second (?) appearance in SUPERBOY #132 (SEPT. 1966).

Their flag is the Constellation Canis Major.

Each member has a unique power just like the Legionnaires. Tail Terrier has an elastic tail and is "Top Dog." Tusky Husky was orange and had the ability to elongate his tooth (like Tusker). Bull-Dog has a horn-growing power. Hot Dog can turn himself "red-hot" Paw Pooch was blue and has a "centipede" form with lots of extra paws.

Don't know Mammoth Mutt, but there was also Chameleon Collie who could change forms as well as Chameleon Boy. In the issue I have a Dalmation who can transform into a cat is rejected because he's affected by cat-nip.

The villains are the Cat Crime Club. Besides the chief the only other one identified is Scratchy Tom. Although there's Fido Felon, Kid Kitty, Plunder Pooch, Gat-Cat, Hold-Up Hound, & Purring Pete are among those shown in the Mutt and Meow Gallery.

I'm glad they're being faithful to the original SCPA, but those aren't necessarily the most interesting powers or viewer-friendly names they could have chosen...

Posted by STU on :

And, when you think about it -- it's kind of weird that their headquarters is a giant fire hydrant.

That would be like the Legion of Super-Heroes having a giant toilet as their headquarters!

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Actually Superboy #131 (July 1966) was the first appearance of the SCPA and it included Mammoth Mutt. I'll post the story here.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Oh, and the same issue also had the feline version of the SCPA that Jim mentioned. As soon as I have the pages saved out small enough to present here, I'll post each page of the story.

Thanks a lot! I heard about these stories, but I never knew it would be so cool! These stories need to be reprinted in an archive!

If the show is a success, maybe DC will release at least a TPB? [Krypto]

And the Amphibian one?

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Any time guys. I just love having my collection all scanned in so I can share it quickly.

This story made me wonder just how many times in the past did DC 'kill' a good guy to introduce another hero? Mammoth Mutt here died so Krypto could take his place. Abin Sur for Hal Jordan. Any others?

Posted by Yellow Kid on :

Blue Beetle was retconned that way by DC. The original commie hating super powered Beetle (Dan Garrte) died and the acrobatic gimmick using BB (Ted Kord) took his place.

Jason Todd, anybody?

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Yep, I would count Jason.

And I did not know that about the Beetle. Wasn't the original a Charlton or Archie character?

Posted by matlock on :

Ted Kord was the Charlton version, the Golden ager was a whole different company I believe. I think the GA version had a radio serial which some have speculated may be the "obscure rights" version blocking Ted from an appearance on JLU.

Jack Knight took up the Starman role after his brother David was killed.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

The original Blue Beetle was published by Fox in the 40s. Charlton bought the rights to the name, created the second (Dan Garret) Beetle in the early 60s, but then killed him off, replacing him with the Ted Kord Beetle, who, as I understand it, actually resembled the original Blue Beetle in concept far more than did the Dan Garrett version. DC, of course, acquired the rights in the early 80s.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Also, a quick note on Blee Beetle:

His adventures lasted about five issues in his first Silver Age series, then about five more in his second, which started with a new #1 and continued about a month after the first one ended.

Then, Steve Ditko totally revamped the character, and Ted Kord appeared as a back-up in Captain Atom in the same exact month that Dan Garret's last issue shipped. Charlton then re-launched Blue Beetle one more time, as Ted Kord, drawn by Steve Ditko. #1 has Ted Kord's origin, and Dan Garret passing the mantle on to him before he dies.

It's also Steve Ditko's finest artwork according to some, better than even Spider-Man #1-38 (he may have done poorly on Legion, but he certainly is one of the finest comic artists ever).

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

What I think is cool (though I've never read it, only about it) is that Ted promised Dan that he would take over the mantle, but the Scarab or whatever that gave Dan super-powers was lost in a cave-in or something. But the Ted continues to carry on the mantle without it.

It's kind of like if Hal Jordan had somehow lost the power ring after Abin Sur died, but decided to continue on as a hero called "Green Lantern". A groovy concept, imo.

Posted by matlock on :

Those were groovier times. Nowadays I doubt something like the Scarab would stay lost for long without a 12 part crossover with people looking for it.

Krypto finally starts on Friday, March 25, on the Cartoon Network. And I just found this image from the show. Look like someone with a Legion background to anyone else?

Posted by Blue Battler on :

Looks like Ace the Bat-Hound and Streaky the
Super-Cat to me.

Streaky was a member of the Super Pets ... I
can't recall if Ace ever met them or not...

Speaking of Krypto, you guys know that the
"Krypto" episode of Smallville is coming up
this week, right?

Posted by dedman on :

yup, according to comics 2 film's (www.comics2film.com) website the krypto episode is this week

Posted by ferroboy on :

Since I don't watch Smallville, I have to ask...which day of the week is it on?

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Smallville is on Wednesday's at 7:00. Same time as Lost which is why I don't watch Smallville. It would take the appearance of a certain trio of teens from the future for me to miss Lost.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Well they aren't using the names Ace or Streaky but I think they came close. This is from Cartoon Network's formal announcement on the show:

quote:
"Chasing his tail at super speeds transforms Kyrpto from a normal dog into Superdog, a dog who can fly, with super strength, super hearing and X-ray vision. Like other superheroes, Krypto cannot save the day alone. He is joined by a crack team of animal crime-fighters: Squeaky, the pampered cat next door and reluctant hero; Batman's dog, Bat Hound, who has a tool belt to match that of his famous owner; and The Dog Star Patrol, a band of intergalactic dogs from all corners of space who joined forces to protect the universe."

I watched Smallville.

I liked the dog more than I thought I would,
given that he wasn't a beagle or terrier of
some kind ... which is the kind of dog that
I thought he should be ...

It was kinda fun. 8-)

OK so I can go with the idea of separating the cartoon somewhat from the comics continuity, but why the strange name change for Streaky?

I mean we have the Bat Hound, and ACE is not too bad a name for a dog. Calling a cat streaky might seen a little soft but then so is Squeaky.

And the Dog Star Patrol? WTF?? I mean that’s even worse than the SPCA and that was a pretty lame name. [Confused]

Sorry just had one of those days. Listened to the radio to find out they are changing the Smarties tube (a chocolate sweet that’s been served in a round cardboard tube since the 30’s) into a hexagonal shape. I hate it when the inDUHviduals at marketing decide to change something just for the hell of it. [Mad] [AHHHH!!!!]

OK grump over we now return you to your normal viewing [Wink]

Update: It is Streaky after all, rather than Squeaky. When asked about Streaky vs. Squeaky, a Warner Brothers spokesperson told Newsarama that Streaky does have a nephew Squeaky that will be visiting in later episodes.

Smarties have never been sold in a round tube here in OZ. I'd have thought the chocolate inside the box was the important thing, but apparently I am an idiot. [Wink]
(See this picture for an example of the shocking, horrifying and just plain wrong Australian Smarties packet. It's... a box! AAAHHH!!!! Surely the chocolate inside will be affected somehow! [Razz] - )

I think you'll find there are sickeningly practical sales, marketing or production reasons driving the change. (Not that I agree with most of these reasons, but they're usually there.) Businesspeople don't make change for changes' sake (unless trying to justify their own positions); it's usually f***ing marketers blowing wind up managers that is driving any alterations you see in the marketplace... In the above case, round packages are usually more difficult to create and transport; hexagonal containers will save roughly 5% on storage space over round tubes (as they fit together perfectly rather than merely snugly), without losing a great deal of the strength generated by the cylindical structure.

Arghhhhhhhhhh,

Giant Smarties!!!!!!!!!! Thats Just WRONG! [Wink]

[Big Grin]

Actually Star Boy, I dont think the market demand for change was there, just like it was not there when they changed our Opal Fruits to Starburst or our Marathon bars to Snickers. (OK I realise GB was out of step with the rest of the world but thats the worlds fault) [Wink] Its all probably driven, as you so rightly say, by the desire to standardise so production can be maximized and costs reduced.

Still dont make it right though [Mad]

Change is bad, just ask those Legion fans who hate the threeboot [Wink]

Yeah - I don't know why I was defending marketers anyway... Musta been light-headed needing an afternoon chocky hit... [Wink]

I saw the ad for this last Saturday [Big Grin]
It's almost arrived, can you believe it?

Krypto the Superdog on WB

Watch the silly trailer, it's got some cute bits.
The theme song certainly didn't rock my socks off though. Whoever they are, they're no Puffy Ami Yumi.

Kevin's dog gets superpowers? Who the heck is Kevin and what is he doing with Kal-el's doggie?
Anybody know the name of the little girl in the bit with Streaky?

...I'm on pins and needles...

If he can chase his tail at super speed, isn't he already Superdog?

(Yeah, I know I'm nitpicking a children's show. Some habits die hard.)

I wonder if they'll have Ace keep a chunk of Kryptonite in one of his pouches, in case Krypto goes rabid or something.

More info here: http://www.comicscontinuum.com/stories/0503/09/krypto.htm .

I can't believe they have 52 episodes scheduled. Unless this is only a 15 minute show that seems excessive for a first season.

Heh.

I just read the summaries ...

I know they won't do it, but wouldn't it be
great if there was a scene of Batman with his
Bathound ... and being the total idiot we can
be around our pets? [Big Grin]

Ha ha
That would be priceless.

I saw an ad for the show that says it'll be on weekdays in the morning. Apparently it's been syndicated before it's even premiered.

That would explain the high number of episodes for such a new show though. That means we could have..what?..9 weeks worth of Krypto cartoons. I sure hope it doesn't suck.

Posted by Outdoor Miner on :

It has already premiered in the UK.

Haven't heard much in the way of review yet except for one guy on the DC newsgroup who liked it.

hahaha just saw the Krypto cartoon at 2 pm today and I was laughing! cute by the way. The story was about Red Kryptonite and it caused Krypto and Kevin to switch their selves. Kevin was invited to the B-day Party and he acted like Krypto. haha. really enjoyed the show.

And how appropriate, because for at least a couple weeks, "Krypto" will be airing on Kids' WB. It's starting off their block with airings at 7 and 7:30 a.m. Sept. 23 and 30 for sure. (Well, at least as for sure as it can be until they change it again. [Smile] )
