I find it incredible that, after all these years, the Legion has never once encountered Poco, Perry White's short, plump alien chef who speaks in rhyme! Clearly a teamup with the Legion's own resident sometimes chef is in order!

Poco sounds like he could anchor his own cooking show. Move over Chefs Ramsay and Jamie! [Razz]

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, so the meek[s] shall inherit inherit the Earth, but what about the geeks? I still want Baffin Island--polar bears and all! :)

Poco is the writer of the classic hit song "Dizzy Lizzy"! He'd totally be an internet sensation these days!

DIZZY LIZZY

I know a girl whose name is Liz
Her friends all call her "Lizzy"
She took a ride on a merry-go-round
And now poor Lizzy's dizzy!

Poor, poor Lizzy
She's really in a tizzy
She goes round and around and around and around
And around and around and around
And around and around and around and around
And that makes Lizzy dizzy.

Much like Perry White, Jimmy Olsen, kryptonite, and teamups between Superman and Batman, Poco first appeared on the Adventures of Superman radio series!

Unfortunately, that seems to be the only place Poco appeared!

The context is that he was being defrauded by a group that claimed they'd make him rich and famous for his song when they were just trying to get money out of him. The song wasn't supposed to be good even in the context of the show.

I've been listening to this radio series regularly and actually know this stuff. It's one of the few comic book superhero series that exist. The age of old time radio ended in 1961 so there wasn't much chance to get superheroes in it except in the Golden Age (though there was a revival-era Fantastic Four show in the 1970's. Only lasted 13 episodes.)

Poco wasn't all fun and rhyming, however.

Apparently he was once the victim of a hate crime, when he was beaten up by the Ku Klux Klan Clan of the Fiery Cross!

Apparently a common scam in the late 40s/early 50s. It was also featured on an episode of the Dragnet radio series.

Yeah, I've been listening to it as well. It's kind of fascinating just how much George Lowther (and the other radio writers) contributed to the Superman mythos. I'm particularly fascinated by the numerous villains that were exclusive to the radio. Who needs Luthor and Brainiac when you have the Yellow Mask, the Laugher, and the Vulture?

There are a lot of oddities about the show. For instance, for the first few years Superman acted in secret. Nobody knew that he existed. It took a long time for people to learn of him and for a while Clark claimed not even to believe there is a Superman. Or how the radio show rarely bothers to make Clark meek and mild-mannered, to the point where it's perfectly normal for Clark to investigate things and go after criminals.

And they almost never had super-villains at all. Most stories, in fact, were against perfectly ordinary crooks, just like the actual comics of the time. Modern retro-style series tend to fill the era with supervillains.

Also, the idea that the KKK's passwords were revealed on the show doesn't seem to be true.

Well, there's actually some interesting changes from the original syndication series to when they restarted it on Mutual.

Throughout most of the original run, Superman's existence was a secret, with really only Jimmy Olsen consistently believing in his existence. When they restarted it, Superman started becoming a more public figure, though the typical reaction on first seeing him was often something along the lines of "I'd heard about him, but I didn't really believe he existed". Super-villains (or at least crooks with colorful names) became far more frequent with the restart of the series as well, though fairly ordinary crooks/spies were as likely to show up as more colorful characters.

The portrayal of Clark was wildly inconsistent. One moment he'd be fainting at threats (usually to give him an excuse to switch to Superman when nobody was looking), and the next he'd be taking the lead. Lois and the others will even comment on this inconsistency in his character. There's really some of the lamest secret identity stuff ever on the show, with Clark doing something that only Superman could do, and then, when questioned, basically changing the subject to distract the attention of the others away from it.

One thing I think they tend to do really well is to set up plots that work by challenging Superman on an intellectual level. Most of the stories are ultimately mystery stories where Superman has to figure out what the heck is actually going on, rather than being faced with, say, a physical obstacle that he can defeat just by trading punches with.

I suppose it depends on how you define a super-villain. I don't think someone with a funny name and a mask who otherwise acts like a regular mob boss--staying behind the scenes and not fighting, and without any super-powers anyway--is a super-villain.
