Pepto-bismol (good for heartburn and upset stomach)
=
Bismoll (Tenzil's home planet)
(a pun on Pepto-bismol)

I'm so dense!

When I was in the 9th grade, my math teacher told this joke. " A termite walks in to a bar and asks 'Is the bar tender here?' " (it works better as a verbal joke) It took one kid the whole school year to get it.

I imagine that Bismol is in the Kaopectate star system

Hmmmm, cute play on words or have DC and Procter and Gamble been in cahoots all these years?

Heh, even as a kid, I got that one, but it used to be DC tradition to go for the goofy names, like that Flash villain, Roy B. Giv, the Rainbow Raider.

I'm still disappointed that 'Koriandr's sister wasn't named something similarly spicy like 'Paprik'a.'

Just wait until Jo Nah hits ya!

I thought Koriandr's sister was named Silant'ro

..and I thought I was slow 'cause I never figured out that thingy Ultra Boy has is a Dragon.

Thank you Tom and Mary!

edit: You know what? They may be a record worthy of The Guiness Book...40 years to get the joke.

Green Lantern and Guiding Light have the same initials. Coincidence? I think not!

Actually, more like 25 or so..I'm 37 and started reading LSH when I was around 10-12...

...meanies!

I think YK meant himself Lardy [Big Grin]

This reminds me of mis-pronouncing words in comics for years on end and then saying them outloud to embarrass myself when meeting fellow fans.

I know I pronounce Eryk Davis Ester (in my head) as 'Urk' rather than 'Eric'. And I've always said GL Corps by prouncing the 'p' instead of GL Core, which was embarrassing when Kent recently corrected me when I last saw him (though he just smiled and was nice enough not to tease and make fun...well, at least not for that particular thing [Razz] ).

Cobalt, I mispronounce things wrong all the time. You learn all these words as a kid by reading but you don't hear them pronounced.

I always say corpse as well instead of core. doh!

My daughter is studying science yesterday...i still can't say anemone. I hate that word. [Smile]

Back in the 60s, I thought that Chameleon Boy was pronounced similar to Champion. It was only when I heard of the lizard that I had to fix my pronunciation.

And due to a misreading, I thought Superman sorceress enemy was Circle, not realizing it was Circe until a few years later.

I have tons more but none I can think of off the bat.

I used to call Nazis the way you would read it (naz-ees) all the way until like high school. I even sometimes couldn't help myself when I wrote my college thesis on the Nazis (Gender History in Nazi Germany). Maybe that's why I spell so poorly despite having a Masters Degree in a subject that is 95% writing papers.

When we were kids my sister used to ask me questions about my "Legend" of Super-Heroes comic books.

For years, I pronounced Joe Staton as Joe Station, like a gas station.

Posted by Hunt Drouin on :

I always mis-read Saturn Girl's name and was convinced she was "Irma."

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I always pronounced John Forte's name "for-tay," until I read in the Legion Companion that it's pronounced "fort."

Don't even ask how I pronounced "Giordano."

I also say "luh-VITZ" instead of LEV-its, for... Paul Levitz.

I say "why-nuth" not "WIN-uth."

Uh... back on topic.... I always thought it was a *coincidence* that Matter Eater Lad came from Bismoll. Is that just naive?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

I did the "corpse" thing when I was a kid, as well.

And I always assumed it was "For-tay" as well.

Ironically, while we were all mangling common words and names, I bet we could all pronounce Mxyzptlk backwards to perfection !

Posted by Sketch Lad on :

I say "Erik" Davis Ester not Urk. But to me, he's "Eee Dee Eee."

and thanks to the Superfriends i was calling him Mr.Miksillplik untll at around the age of 15 or 16 then i learned the true pronunciation or his name.

and i've always wondered if Bismollians suffer from acid reflux?

I always pronounced Wolverine's name in my head as Wolver-rhine. Y'see we don't have those animals in England so it's not a species that ever gets mentioned. Not like rabbits or squirrels or so forth. So I'd never heard the word said aloud. So I was surprised to find out it was actually Wolver-een. I still have to sometimes correct myself even now.

There are others, but that's the only one I can remember right now. (I just know there's some legion related ones as well but I just can't think of them!)

That's what you get for getting old!
