I nominate the 6-part MORDRU arc that originally appeared in 5YL LSH #s 43-48 (which I am currently rereading), plus pages 1-3 & 12 of LSH ANNUAL 4.

Why? Multiple reasons.

1) Zombie comics are poplar right now and a large bulk of this story features the team battling Mordru's armies of the risen dead, and even a Legion of Dead Heroes!

2) Artwork by fan-fave Stuart Immonen.

3) Guest stars: Martian Manhunter and Amythest fans will want this.

4) A tale dripping with revenge, mysticism, horror, drama, pathos and great character moments.

5) Current 'toonverse fan-fave Infectious Lass vs. zombies.

What's your nominee and why?

Keeping it down to two:

White Triangle (LSHv4 66-71, Lgs 23-28, LSHv4Ann6 (Kinetix story only), LgsAnn2)

A big TPB running through from the end of the Beginning of Tommorrow TPB and with the whole of post-ZH Andromeda's character arc.

Legion Lost (Lost 1-12)

Intense, self-contained, and I'm sure Coipel's name wouldn't hurt sales these days [Smile]

Doesn't it feature tons of cameos of heroes who were dead in the early 90s, and some of whom may still be?

Come to think of it... doesn't current Countdown star and all around pivotal figure of the current DCU Jason Todd make a cameo?

Posted by MLLASH on :

Well, SOMEone in a Robin costume does! He attacks Blood Claw in LSH # 45!

That's right before zombie Magnetic Kid kills the apparently homophobic Khund in issue 46 (Firefist, also apparently a homophobe, calls Pol an "human aberration"!)!

Not an arc per se, but how 'bout a "Best of Matter-Eater Lad" TPB, featuring his three TMK spotlight issues (with select scenes from #50), plus earlier Matter-Eater Lad-centric stories, like his first appearance, the Tenzil-Vi date issue and Renkil Kem issue!

With him being exclusive to Marvel is DC allowed to do a collection featuring his work? Just wondering as I'm not sure how for these exclusive contracts go.

Right now I'd only add Legion Worlds to those already mentioned for a collection. I'd have to do more thinking on other, post-boot, stories for their worthiness.

Earth War? I keep hearing good things about this yet I never read it. From what I've heard from people around here and other places it's one of the best Legion epics.

Posted by MLLASH on :

EARTHWAR started out strongly with some ABSOLUTELY AMAZING James Sherman artwork in the first 2 issues, but the ending issues were hurt for me by rush-job artwork.

LLOST would make for an expensive TPB but is definitely worthy.

An all Matter-Eater Lad tpb? I'm so there I have it already!! (I wish)

Oh yeah - Ed Brubaker's Marvel-exclusive, and DC did a Gotham Central TPB just this week.

It's all about the putting pen to paper/fingers to keyboard in the present (and sometimes, they even write in exceptions then, like PAD's Fallen Angel clause in his Marvel deal), not past stuff.

Otherwise, if you're going to do both Lost & Worlds, rather than Lost as a standalone, you should probably do a Damned/Rifts TPB ([Lgs78 (epilogue only?)+79-81, LSH122-125, SF&O2? (lead only, if included]) as well...

I'd like to see them continue directly from the upcoming LSV storyline they're going to release in TPB. It's a good starting point, since it kicked off with a new #1. Once completed, the 5YL issues should be collected, followed by the reboot LSH, at least through the Shrinking Violet/Emerald Eye story.

If they chose not to follow the archiving route, I'd like to see a thematic recreation of the old 100-page giants from the '70s.

Mixing eras.

How about pairing the WHO IS SENSOR GIRL? arc with Mystery Lad's origin (theme-- secrets entrusted to Saturn Girl)?

Reprint the Nardo super-hero camp from ADVENTURE with the Levitz UNIVERSO version. Maybe toss in a new story featuring the animated version?

Or a LSH wedding TPB-- Chuck and Luornu, Garth and Imra, Val and Jeckie, reboot Jo and Tinya... actually, I guess that'd have to be two volumes, wouldn't it?

I'd like to see "Terra Mosiac" collected, maybe with Legionnaires 1 - 6 added as well.

I'm a 5YL-Fan [Big Grin] and that issue with the destruction of Earth, narrated by Devlin O'Ryan...man, I was a kid when I read it and it still chokes me up a little to this day...

I honestly want to see the 5YL stuff more than anything else. Besides the fact that it's my second-favorite Legion era, I'm also missing a bunch of issues here and there, and I'm not sure if I've ever really read the whole thing all the way through.

I'd love for the "Who is Sensor Girl" arc to be collected in a trade (all-time best writing of the Emerald Empress IMO), but not paired with anything else (especially not the story where Sensor Girl blinds the Eye and the Empress turns to dust. Yuck.)

And even though the Silver Age stuff is not likely to ever be collected in TPBs, what with the Archives and the Showcases, I think that collecting the first and second Fatal Five stories would be great (it would add up to four issues, which I think is long enough for a TPB.) I think both of those stories, especially the first one, were far ahead of their time.

Themed trades may indeed be the way to go...

LSH: FATAL 5

Those 2 Fatal 5 tales Stealth mentioned, plus S/LSH... 219 (Grell art, Duplicate Boy), I think it was, along with S/LSH 231... I *think* it was (damn my failing memory!!)... the oversize issue with James Sherman art, featuring the LSH battling the F5 while also attempting to evacuate a doomed planet. A great tale, there.

That would make a pretty nice tpb!

I think that the whole Levitz 2nd run should be reprinted as TPBs.

Good idea. And we might as well include S/LSH # 198 (?) Cary Bates' story is meh, but Dave Cockrum's beautiful art makes it worthwhile.

Do "themed" trades actually sell? Looking at the list of collected editions, the vast majority are for straight runs of issues (albeit sometimes excluding fill-ins), and most of the rest are done by writer/artist rather than by any common trait in the stories themselves except the title the stories were in..

The "Legends of a Dead Earth" Annual with him, LSH #50 (his RETURN-return), Legion Lost....#9, I think. The one with him smashing up the fleet....
...What about that one where Quislet's returned to his dimension?

I like a lot of the ideas mentioned (except Dark Circle Rising [Razz] )

Would love to see Earth War, LSV Baxter Arc (awesome that they're collecting it) and would love to see TMK #1-12 with the first Jo Annual. Terra Mosiac would be awesome, but I have to reread--it might be hard to include earlier issues that are essential to understanding it.

The Legion of the Dead/Mordru Arc under TMK would be tons of fun, and could be one of those trades that catch on.

Love Reboot's idea for the White Triangle mega-arc. Legion of the Damned combined with the prelude issue and Widening Rifts would be cool, then Legion Lost, then Legion Worlds. Might as well spread them out and make tons of money (thinking like DC here) [Big Grin]

I think DnA's first dozen or so issues could be split into seperate runs and work well.

I guess the one I'd love to see the most would be Earth War. I've only read it one time so I haven't really ever critiqued it, only knowing that I found it very appealing.

Essential Legion vs. Fatal Five seems like a no-brainer! Especially with the later stories up to #231.

Yeah! I saw the item in today's CSN. I felt a bit of the "ask and ye shall receive" when I saw it.

The Omega story from Superboy/Legion 250-251. I know it is not really alot about him much but the scene where he meets Omega at the door of the Legion HQ all by himself is what made me a Wildfire fan for life. And then him and Superboy talking in the rubble of the HQ at the end of the story talking about what it means to be a Legionarie also really shows off why Drake was so cool.

Touche! Though, sadly, a "Best of Quislet" would be terribly small [Frown]

White Triangle, yes! Damned to Worlds too! Earthwar is another great choice.

Followed by the Chu Sting/Fatal Five arc. Though that might be problematic, because nearly all the previous issues connect into this. It'd need to have LSH 78-80 and Legionnaires 33-37 at least, but Mon's return might have to be included (which would mean adding LSH 73-75 and Legionnaires 31-32)...
