Don't have the details yet but I've gotten a sneak look at March's covers and there is a solicit cover for a Showcase featuring the Legion! More details as I (or anyone else) can find them.

That's great news!

I'm an Archives boy myself, but more Legion stuff is always cool.

Yeah, there were Fawcett era reprints that were skipped over in the Shazam Archive, but I seem to recall there being some other oddities as far as stuff getting left out.

And yeah, I'm pretty excited about this, even though I've got all the stories in Archives!

Posted by Kent Shakespeare on :

for those of us who don't pay attention to such matters, how is a Showcase collection different from the regular archives?

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

It's softcover, twice as long, a third of the price, and black and white.

Posted by Outdoor Miner on :

The black and white is what puts me off. That said, I only buy Archives when they're on sale.

I don't want to knock the Showcases though.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

I'm usually surprised how little the black and white impairs my enjoyment.

I think they're great as samplers of particular series, but anything one is serious about one should buy in Archives.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Even though they are B&W I love the Showcases. I've gotten issues I probably never would have read before. Plus I really like the crisp, clean look of just black and white. I think that's one of the reasons The Walking Dead is still my favorite book and why I just flip over Barry's black and white cover looks he gives us.

Posted by Blacula on :

Ditto (to Outdoor Miner). Color is extremely important to me in comics.

I'm really surprised/angered at the way all the hard work those men and women do is usually the very last thing that gets recognised by the comic-reading public and usually TPTB too.

Is color really that expensive? Is that why the Archives are so expensive and these Showcases a lot more affordable? I'd never realised that.

Still, its great that the Legion are getting a Showcase. I wonder how popular it'll be since a lot of people seem to have gone the Archives Legion route judging by how many volumes they've produced of that.

Edit ('cause quickdraw EDE and LL got in while I was still writing) - With all this positive appraisal maybe I should give one of these Showcases a go. EDE's probably very right when he says that they're good introduction books to characters or teams that I've never really been exposed ot much before - like say Jonah Hex or the Doom Patrol.

Blacula-

color is expewnsive, but do is paper - if you don't need color (especially good color), you can use cheaper paper, and that lowers the costs.

it sounds like the Showcases are like Marvel's Essentials then? I have the first 2 X-men volumes of that run. A good format, since the original color of the time was pretty awful; in many cases the art looks better, cleaner. I'm not sure 60s art would be as well suited as Bronze Age art, tho.

Posted by Blacula on :

Thanks Kent. The 'no color = cheaper paper' thing does make a lot of sense. That's probably the reason right there.

Does anyone know how many issues this edition will include btw?

Posted by Tamper Lad on :

Showcase is printed on newsprint so you get a bit of that toxic ink smell comics used to have.

The page count is usually a few pages over 500. Since the Archives are 250+ I would think it would go to the end of Archive 2 for the price of $17.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

And you have to take into account that the archives have to be re-colored. So that significantly boosts the costs.

No idea how many volumes the Legion Showcase will have but Superman is on its third (IIRC), House of Mystery is doing its second and I think Batman may already have two. I have ordered every issue since this format started and the only disappointment so far was the Jonah Hex having the last 20 pages or so out of order. You just have to remember to skip around otherwise it was a great volume.

Anyway, I would expect the Legion to at least follow through all the Adventure/Action issues and probably all the early Superboy appearances as well. Not sure what the cutoff will be but I would guess that depends on sales.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

I forgot to mention that if you order through DCBS, the first time around the Showcases are usually 50% off, bringing them down to $8.49 each. After the first solicit most are still available at the 40% discount of $10.19.

I've never actually used eBay. I did just recently order a few from alibris.com, and got them for less than half of what I'd pay in a store, so I'm happy enough. But I just don't like the Silver Age enough to pay even that much for those stories; I'll just go with the Showcase editions (I assume there will be more) and that'll be fine.

Exactly. I love these things. I have the JLA, Teen Titans, and GL Showcase volumes, which have allowed me to read the seminal stories from these series without spending Archive levels of cash. I honestly will likely skip the Legion Showcase, given that I have the 12 Archives.

Superman is the only one to have multiple volumes published thus far (two Superman proper, and 1 Superman Family). JLA and GL both have second volumes coming out in the next couple of months.

Strangely, neither Wonder Woman nor Flash have received Showcases yet.

What's really been a treat about them is that the best ones have tended to be comics I would never have otherwise picked up, including stuff like House of Mystery or Haunted Tank. Oddly enough, some of the ones I really looked forward to, like JLA, have been kind of disappointing.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Superman gets Vol. 3 in the March solicits. And I could swear that I have two of another on my shelf and thought it was Batman. Maybe it was the three Superman titles sitting together.

And we called the Showcase DC's version of Marvel's Essentials way back in June of last year. As just about every comic news outlet did.

Posted by rouge on :

While others may work without the colour, I don't think the Legion can. The bright "Futuristic" colours were an essential part of the art.

I'm holding out against all hope for the "Chronicles" treatment. (and Write DC from time to time to tell them that).

That's the benefit of parallel releasing of the B&W Showcase on volumes where there are archives already released. There is very little to the volumes in terms of design. Making a cover and updating the table of contents is about it.

Essentially all the costs of digitally separating the black line work from the comics has been done. If you view that work as a sunk cost, any contribution margin earned on a Showcase volume goes straight to the bottom line.

I suspect I will not buy any more of the Showcases or the Essentials. The reason is, Marvel has put out on DVD complete runs of a few titles, including Fantastic Four and Amazing Spiderman. Why pay 17 bucks for a handful of black-and-white issues, when I can plunk down 50 bucks and have every issue in full color?

The problem with this scenario, is, of course, DC has not done this at all, and Marvel has only done it with a few titles. I have been hoping for years this would be done with DC's golden age titles, but to date they have not. Still, I can be patient, and hope that someday they'll have a complete Batman or Superman on disk from day 1. Or, perhaps I am just dreaming...

I don't have any of the Archives yet--I'm hoping someone will come through with some of them for me for Christmas--but I'd certainly consider getting the Showcase for some of the early stuff.

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :

Even though I have all these issues in Archives and original issues, I might buy this anyway, to carry around on business trips or something. That it smells like old comics makes it all the better!

I also will demand that EDE do a Showcase review of this!

Actually, this might kick-start me into getting other Showcase series, like the weird heroes, horror, war and westerns they've done.

This is were we run into some trouble with the Showcases. The third Superman (also in the March solicits, text below) features the Legion of Super-Villains. Will this story also see print in the Legion's Showcases?

EDE, you read the second Superman collection haven't you? Was Action #267 included? It should have been in the second volume. If it wasn't then it should show up in the Legion one.

The actual Action issues aren't broken down for this collection but should feature the story from Action Comics #286, The Jury of Super-Enemies. Action Comics #283 should also be included in this collection which features the appearance of Chameleon men (Jan-Dex and Zo-Gar) in The Red Kryptonite Menace.

You mean the Supergirl story? No, but Supergirl stories generally aren't reprinted. The only thing it has from Action #267 is "Hercules in the 20th Century".

D'oh! That's right. Forgot that one was Supergirl related. I wonder how they'll treat Action #285. That features both Superman and Supergirl and would normally be collected in this Superman volume if treated as a Superman story.

Now this IS exciting!!
I haven't bought any of the archives, basically because I can't afford them. This is a good way for me to read all of the early adventures of a series that I love.
The question of colour isn't a problem for me.
I agree with Kent that some stuff looks a lot better in black and white.
I dont have any of the Showcase titles but I do have the first two volumes of the Essential Doctor Strange and I thought they were amazing value for money.
I will DEFINATELY be buying the Legion Showcase when it comes out. This is the first comic news I have been excited about in a long time...well, apart from the new Flash series - and I have allready made my thoughts clear about that.
But this stuff is stone cold classic material.

I can't wait!!!

Posted by Xben on :

Looking at the specific issues...it looks like this Showcase includes everything in the first *three* archives? How is that possible at the page count?

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

It does as far as I can tell:

Legion of Super-Heroes Volume 1
Adventure Comics #247, #267, #282, #290, #293, #300-305, Action Comics #267, #276, #287, #289, Superboy #86, #89, #98, and Superman #147

Legion of Super-Heroes Volume 2
Adventure Comics #306-317, Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #72, and Superman Annual #4

Legion of Super-Heroes Volume 3
Adventure Comics #318-328, Superboy #117, and Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #76

Same 46 issues. I know the Showcases reprint the covers as well so I don't know where they cut the 36 pages from (each Archive had 196 pages).

I don't think these solicitations are always accurate as far as what ends up being in the volume.

Someone on the DC Archives Message Board has determined that it must be a typo in the solicitation, as the page counts just don't work out. They recalculated based on stopping at Adventure Comics #321 (instead of #328), and that seems to match the page count. See the post dated 12/12/06 4:29 pm in that thread.

Son of a gun! And it's the real Adv. 247 cover, too, not the poorly restored version that's been kicking around since 1980.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Alright, DCBS has updated for these solicits and the Legion Showcase gets the 50% discount (if more than one is scheduled only one gets the 50% while the others get 40% off). That's only $8.49. At that price I'm ordering two so I have one to give away as a gift, probably to a non-Legion fan in an attempt to hook them.

Is anyone else psyched for this?

It's supposed to come out next week and I can't wait, I told my LCS to hold one for me and he said it was good that I reminded him becuase his other copies have already been spoken for.

I'm just so excited, I have some early Legion stories in reprints, but I don't have 500 pages worth [Big Grin]

I hope they do a better job with this than the Shazam! Showcase (there were a few issues where we only saw the cover, not the interior stories and only some of the tales from the 100 pg giants were printed). However, I don't think that will be the case with Legion since they will obviously do more than one volume...

Sorry, I just really can't wait till Wednesday when I get some Silver Age Legion goodness (hey, I can't afford Archives so how else will I get these stories?)

Posted by Tamper Lad on :

The Shazam series from the 70s reprinted some of the old Fawcett material, didn't it? Was that the stuff left out of the Showcase?

Some of the covers might not be reproduced. As the LSH was not featured on some of the Adventure/Action/Superboy covers.

Saturn Girl in the silver age was modern in a way that many women still strive for and fail to achieve today. Truly ahead of her time.

I can't wait to get my Legion coloring book! [Wink]

Seriously, I'm really looking forward to this. It'll give me an opportunity to reread some Silver Age stories which I haven't enjoyed in a while without having to dig them out of my boxes.

I REALLY dislike the idea of reading the Legion in black and white. The colors are so important in this series. I'll stick with the pretty archives.

Posted by MLLASH on :

I've grown to adore the B&W SHOWCASE format (though I still hold out for color TPBs of some stuff, like the recent TPBs for the 70s run of Justice Society).

Posted by stephbarton on :

hey, if they reprinted Legion in softcovers, I would buy it. But I simply can't afford archives so I'm just happy to be getting the stories.

Although I would think that GL would be a comic where color is more essential to the story and I picked up the first volumn of that one (of course I've also been real tempted to go through it with a green and yellow color pencil)

Posted by brigort on :

I don't like my comics in B&W, but I did order this.
The archives are just too pricey.
I'm only missing the first twenty appearances anyway, and I don't expect to own the original books anytime soon, so the purchase seems worthwhile.
Now, if they were to release an oversized "Omnibus" type book..I'd be all over that.

Posted by Matthew E on :

I'm getting this. I'd prefer it in colour (and in fact was given the first Archive as a gift), but it's just Silver Age stuff, which isn't my favourite. I've ordered Archives 10-12, so I'll have Cockrum and Grell in colour, but I'm satisfied with black and white for everything before that.

Posted by wndola1 on :

See you can't read the expensive archives while eating pizza in bed with wet hair... Archives are for bookshelves and easy chairs quarter bin comics and showcases are for reading the heck out of.

Posted by Chemical King on :

I got the Archives, but I think the Marvel Essential series is a good idea and it is long overdue that DC followed suit.

I got the black and white Avengers which are real monsters (especially ##4 & 5) and it took me some time (YEARS!!!) til I finally got to read them after buying, but now I am really glad I did buy them back then because I read ##1-4 and know what happened in the first 100 issues, and that's a whole lot for not so much money.

Certainly it is not the same as a coloured reprint, but when you don't want to spent so much money on a certain franchise, it is a really good way to jump on board.

I did not even know there was a Legion showcase coming - must hav ignored that info in Previews...

Posted by TimCallahan on :

You know what? I don't think the Archives are all that pricey. You get basically 10 issues worth of content for usually about $33.00 (on Amazon or elsewhere). $3.30 an issue. You're paying $3.00 an issue for new comics these days. But for your $3.30 and issue you get a nice hardcover.

So it's not really that pricey.

Posted by Matthew E on :

In Canada, they're that pricey. Cover price over $80 (because they were priced back when the exchange rate was terrible). You can get them for less, if you look around, but $80 is out-of-the-question too much.

Posted by stephbarton on :

Hey, I'm a poor college student, until I get a big girl job (and pay off loans) the regular Legion issue itself is too expensive (I dropped it because I wasn't loving it enough and it costs 4 cents more than a Whopper Jr. with cheese, fries and a drink).

Besides, I'm not going to pay $3.30 for a Silver Age story, I like a lot of the ideas in the Silver Age, there is a lot of crazy fun concpets that I feel is often lacking in modern comics (some characters/books would work really well with this) but the storytelling/characterization is just not worth it for me.

I still want the stories and history (which is why Showcase is perfect for me) and from what I've heard about later Legions I think I would want to get those in Archive editions to have them in color, BUT I need a job first.

Posted by stephbarton on :

Woot! Got it today. I got up to page 372 before I got to stories I didn't already have in one form or another, but it was all still worth it.

The first appearence of the Time Trapper, more Substitute Goodness, Dev-Em, and a million other things I loved.

Also noticed that writers then seem to have the same problems as writers now, in that they certainly favor some Legionnaires over others. In 500 pages I'm not sure if Invisible Kid got one line in and Shrinking Violet only talked once, but I still loved every panel of it.

Some of the stuff was really funny and oh so dated, but there were still some great moments.

So when does Volumn 2 come out?

and can anyone tell me what the Time Trapper was up to and how the Legion stopped him? I really want to know.

Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :

Ah... about the Time Trapper... well, the build up to the Legion's big showdown with him is pretty nice. The big clash itself is a bit of a letdown, however. We never really get a clear story of what he was doing, but he eventually sends his agent, Glorith, back in time to attack the Legion by turning them to protoplasm. Through a twist of fate, the team is changed into toddlers instead, and so the Legion of Super-Tots ends up having to defeat the Time Trapper.

Posted by wndola1 on :

Ok so usually I don't mind the llack of color, but in this one we are looking at a group of kids the same height in similar outfits with similar hairdos... I have started memorizing color shapes to tell them apart.

I would also like to see someone compare these to the showcase and original issues to get some idea of how heavily these are edited

Posted by Bicycle Repair Man on :

Yeah, the Silver Age writers never did supply a motive for the Time Trapper's creation of the "Iron Curtain of Time".
One thing I noticed, the last time I reread that period: the "Dynamo Boy" story, which has the adult Legion of Super-Villains travelling back in time to the teen Legion's era, stranding Dynamo Boy in the distant future, and getting returned to their own time at the end of the story, was published while the "Iron Curtain of Time" was supposedly in place (there was actually a pretty long gap between the final showdown with the Time Trapper and his last previous appearance).
Sometimes it is easiest to assume that these stories did not necessarily occur (from the characters' point of view) in the same order in which they were published.

I haven't bought it yet but I'm heading by the CBS today.
So let me guess...almost 200 pages in...ummm...The Moby Dick of Space?

Say, do they get as far as the backup feature stories in Action? I don't think I have all of those post-Adventure but pre-SB&LOSH appearances.

Posted by stephbarton on :

Nope, no Moby-Dick of space. The last story is Adventures #321 "The Code of the Legion!" where the Legionnaires have a super powerful weapon hidden and only they know where. TPTB need to make sure that none of the Legionnaires will ever reveal the secret so they test them to make sure they won't crack.

This story really cracked me up since we've already seen the Legion get inflitrated so I wonder how wise it is for EVERY member of the Legion to know the secret [Wink]

So when the Showcase is DCs "Essential" series, does anybody know what the Marvel digest format could be? They are offering the new Ant Man series for cheap, so what is a digest? :-)

So complicated... but good that there are so many formats so anybody can afford some Legion stuff!

A digest is like a trade, only the digest is smaller in size than the original pamphlets, about 2 inches smaller vertically and 1 inch smaller horizontally.

Anytime Lance!

Just rearranged my Showcase shelf (yes I finally had to give over a whole shelf to the series). And in looking at the spine to the Legion issue, I'm ticked. Why is it we have to look at Rokk's ugly fish-bowled face? Why not Garth or Imra instead?

I demand that DC reprint the Legion Showcase with two more spine versions; one of Garth and one of Imra. They know how we like our Legion AR stuff. I'd snap up another two copies just for that change.

Just bought it yesterday on sale, and got a 20% discount. And it's one of the best bargains I've ever had.

Even though it's black and white, I think giving up color and getting more stories is a great trade-off.

I've really gained a new appreciation for the Adventure Era after reading this; I've read about half of them before at an aunt's place, but I was too young then to fully appreciate the history of these stories. Lightning Lad's death and resurrection, for instance. Or the story of Mon-el, or Dream Girl, or Bouncing Boy. Sure, a lot of these stories were simple, but they were surprisingly imaginative, had nice plot twists and were greatly entertaining.

I can hardly wait for the next Showcase [Smile] Any word on when it comes out?

great to hear a positive review. i didn't get it because, after a fast browse, i felt Forte's art didn't hold up in black and white very well.
a lot of the art in the Showcases suffers for the lack of color, in my opinion. even Ross Andru. a few (like Jack Kirby) look great regardless. he gave his blacks weight.
but after your comments maybe i'll grab one. thanks.

DC just solicited a "Green Lantern Chronicles", so here's hoping the Legion gets some soon.

Actually I was kind of bummed by this, I was hoping they would chronicle more of the Golden Age stuff (like Captain Marvel and the Marvel Family) before going to Silver Age. I was hoping they were rolling out Chronicles as a cheaper option than Archives, but not so much.

although I would agree, seeing the Legion Chronicles would be awesome, it's just that there are other and far rarer material I would rather see first.
