Okay, I admit it. I like him. And I'm actually a bit of a sucker for the whole "Lost Soul of Antares" subplot. And I don't mind him being retconned in to Legion history.

So there!

I'm with Eryk. I thought his entire story/origin/retconning was pretty cool!

TMK's Kid Quantum retcon was actually one I liked as well. It also was a good reason to explain the rule allowing only sentients with intrinsic (as opposed to artificially created/augmented) powers to join. The "Lost Soul of Antares" spin was also an entertaining one for me.

Post-boot, James was an a-s-s, but DnA's take on Jazmin was one I really welcomed. Perhaps, a Kid Q in this reimagining (are we still calling that or is it 3boot now?) wouldn't be a bad thing.

I never read much of the preboot James but I really liked the post-boot version.

I love the characters who 'rock the boat' personality-wise in team books and add a little friction. I never really got why everyone in fandom seemed to dislike him though. Don't they read comics for 'drama'? As for James being an 'ass' (not to single you out Igee - that's a fairly common charge against James), to paraphrase an old Jessica Rabbit line - "He's not bad, he's just written that way". If he hadn't died he surely would've eventually received a redemption storyline wherre we saw a new side to him and most people would've suddenly started liking him more. As is what happened with his sister and Umbra and so many other characters that are introduced as unlikeable (by the other characters) for just that purpose. Or even other characters that are initially one note but that we are eventually given more info about - like Monstress and Gates and so on.

That said though, I didn't mind that he died on their first mission. I liked the way it affected the team (especially Gim and Jenni) and I also liked that it gave a valid reason for the no external powers rule. Plus it was a big surprise to lose a member so early on in the team's history.

Ahhhh - all this reminiscence about the early days of the reboot. God, I loved that period. How could the Mark Waid who gave us that era choc-a-block full of characterisation and action and plot twists and excitement be the same guy who's giving us this current dead fish of a book? I just don't get it. Maybe Tom Peyer (who I've always disliked for being the guy who ordered the kill of Leviathan and being one third of PMS) had more positive input in that period than I thought?

I always thought that Year One White Triangle storyline which culminated in the destruction of Trom and Tinya's death was one of the best long arcs in mainstream comics I had ever read.

TESTIFY! I completely agree!

And the year-long Chu sting storyline that followed was just as good IMO! Loved the Espionage Squad take-down at the end of it!

<SOB> The quality of the early days of the reboot... why have you forsaken us?

Jeepers, folks! I love the early phase of the reboot before it turned into a big stinking pile of camelephant dung as much as anyone, but this thread is to talk about how groovy the Soul of Antares is!
