He fits all the criteria of such Superfriend stalwarts as El Dorado, Samurai, Apache Chief and Black Vulcan.

Seriously:

Non-white - check!

Poorly defined do anything super powers - check!

Makes very few actual appearance, or ever does anything important - check!

The only thing the guy's missing is a silly name alluding to his ethnicity

Was there some sort of meeting over at hanna-babara where it was decided that Tyroc wasn't funky enough? Was he deemed to be not enough of a black stereotype?

An inquiring mind wants to know!

Well his name is slightly evocative of Tyrone and how many white guys do you know named Tyrone?

Wasn't "Tyroc" translated as "scream of the devil"? They could have just called him Black Devil! [Tyroc] That probably would have made Paul Levitz like the character. [Roll Eyes]

Black Devil would have failed the front-page test even back in the 1970s

How about "Black Lungs"?

Ok, assuming no asbestos miners read the legion back then.

Or Robin's rival for the title "Best pair of legs in short pants"?

Wow. Superfriends. I'm traumatized just from the memories...

Isn't it weird that the only other female character (not counting Zayna of the Wonder Twins) in Super Friends was Hawkgirl? It would have been nice to see (if only in a cameo) Supergirl, Black Canary, Zatanna or some other female character. Being the only female in a group of otherwise diverse males must have accounted for some major sexual tension. Of course, you can't have heroes kissing in cartoons...what would the stock-holders say?

Uh... wasn't Wonder Woman in Superfriends...?

yeh, cali...should have made it clear in the opening sentence... [Embarrassed]

I love Tyroc. And while the genius Tamper Lad was joking evocating Tyrone...Tyroc comes from Tyr(as I know you guys know!!) He rocks.

The reason??? Ferget comics man! I was a fan of this guy before I read him in the comics. He makes a great toy!!!!!! heh.

Tyroc and the Mantis (toys) rocked!

I don't think Hawkgirl *was* in Super Friends.

But Rima the Bird Girl was.

Yeh, Rima was...but why?

Geez i am an idiot. Tyroc...i thought was the villain Tyr. My bad guys. Legion lore sometimes gets jumbled in the brain.

Yes totally a bad stereotype. I've read some of his old issues. Bad stuff. I loved him in v4 though especially as vice president and later president.

I'm now contemplating if I should refer to Tyroc from now on as 'Black Tyroc'. After months of getting used to this, I'm sure to piss off some new member of the board in Spring 2006 and it'll be all awkward and stuff...

Yes, I think I will!

If he were named Black Devil, his arch-foes could be the Knights of White Satan!
