Half-developed idea: so Ron-Karr is from Neptune, and Neptune, being a gas giant, will no doubt one day be a major source of groovy elements/compounds essential to the future economy, and will need to be mined, Bespin-style.
Maybe on Neptune, the mining takes place at a level where the atmospheric and gravitational pressure is so high that the normal human body can't stand it. Solution: miners with the ability to flatten themselves so that they can operate in such an environment.
Add in something about the Interplanetary House of Pancakes, and you've got an origin!
