In my old comic books, they refer to Dawnstar as Lucero, a word that means bright star. "Lucero del Alba" is a common expression, it usually refers to Venus.

In French, Dawnstar could be "L'étoile de l'aube", literally star of dawn.

I did a double take and laughed with Timber Wolf as "Wolf of Construction Wood" - just goes to show how difficult translation is. Maybe Loup des bois (woods) or Loup des pins (pine trees, since some timber is pine and it sounds good).

They did. Not accurately but they did. There are several ways to translate their names in Greek. One is by "agglomeration" as is often the case in German. But agglomeration in Greek would make their names sound really silly. So they translated them either directly or - more often than not - in a round about way. For example Saturn Girl would be "Girl from Saturn" since directly translating "Saturn" and "girl" would be rather meaningless.
The translations below are in Latin letters (I'll try to post an image of what their names actually look like in Greek. The first part is the actual names used in the Greek editions of Legion stories back in the 60s and the second part is other Legionnaires' or Legion characters' names who have never appeared in the Greek editions. Also, the word "pedi" (hence, pediatrician, pedagogic etc) means both "child" and "boy", while "agori" means "boy". In new comics editions nowadays they tend to leave the names untranslated in most cases.
Doctor One thought it might be fun to try to guess which name is which, so I won't post a "who's who" yet.

Come to think of it most of their names would sound much better and infinitely more poetical in Ancient Greek,(for example Sun Boy = Phaethon, Dream Girl = Morphaea, Saturn Girl = Kronis/Kronidia, Lightning Lad = Keravnios etc) but it's too big a task to do that right now.

I could dig up some Legion mags from Sweden and Italy I've got and post the translated names, and I've also got a legion magazine from Egypt but I don't speak a word of Arabic.

Hey, this is really fun. Just so you know, I don't speak a word of Greek. And I've figured out dissapointingly few of these. I think we need to make a team effort out of this...

Yeah! That sounds right. So, Tromium, how did you come up with those? Do you speak some Greek? I guessed Lefki Mayissa because Mayissa sounds like the female form of Magus (Mordru). Agori ton Astron really is quite obvious. And in retrospect I really should have figured out Siderenio Agori: there are iron-catching molecules in phytoplankton called siderophores (sorry, I'm becoming geeky again). But I would never have figured out the others. Even now I don't know how you guys deciphered them.

I think Tromium really does speak the language.
I did take a Greek course a long time ago, but it wasn't of much help. I tried to decipher using Greek-derived English words. Anything with "astro" refers to stars, so "Star Boy" and "Dawnstar" followed. The Greek-derived prefix "a-" is a negative, which led to "aorato" being "invisible". Pedi-Topi was a guess--it just sounded like it would mean "Bouncing Boy".

Wow! You people are amazing! I mean, if Daniel Jackson ever leaves Stargate SG-1, you are a shoo-in to take his place. And it's even more amazing if you consider that I used "boy" instead of "lad" in a couple of cases, and, unconsciously, used two different words for Fire. "Pyr" and "Fotia".

Doctor One, you understood most of them. Even though Koritsi ton Oneiron is Dream Girl, I wonder if you thought about "dark" because of Sandman, who's been called "Oneiros" in some issues. There was a hint about her though in my post. I wrote that her ancient Greek name could be "Morphaea", from Morpheus-Sandman, the "god" of...dreams. On the other hand, you also used the placement of some names to figure them out, which was very cunning and clever. It was also amazing that u figured out the only name I used in ancient greek (because in modern Greek Matter-Eater Lad's name is really....well...silly. -voros does have to do with eating, like in "herbivore", "carnivore" etc.
I wonder how u figured out Emerald Empress (Smaragdenia Aftokrateira) and White Witch (Lefki Mayissa). Maybe the fact that her real name "Mysa" looks and sounds like the Greek word for "witch" also helped?

Tromium, with the exception of "Nearos tis Fotias" = Fire Lad, you figured all those names out. I wonder how you managed it considering that most have no etymological relation to the English language.

Rockhopper,you're right. A- is usually a negative in Greek so the course you took definitely helped.
As for Bouncing Boy, Pedi-Topi literally means "Ball boy", and "topi" is a rather kiddie word for "ball" but that's the "officially" translated name.

So, anyway, I'm preparing an image with all their names, but thought I'd add some more characters I forgot in my first post. Unless you want a "round two" before I post it?
(After all, there's Color Kid, Monstress, Flare and Caress, Porcupine Pete, Kid Quantum etc)
